if you were going
Speaker:to build a house in
Speaker:Australia, Like, if you
Speaker:had the products that
Speaker:you had overseas in
Speaker:Germany that you could
Speaker:build here, like, how
Speaker:would you build it?
Speaker:Two ways.
Speaker:I love CLT.
Speaker:so I would maybe build
Speaker:CLT a member on the
Speaker:outside and wood fiber.
Speaker:That would be
Speaker:my number one.
Speaker:Number one choice,
Speaker:uh, roof would be
Speaker:definitely a rafter
Speaker:roof, nice and
Speaker:really complicated.
Speaker:Not because it needs
Speaker:to be complicated
Speaker:because I want it
Speaker:to be complicated.
Speaker:so it's a masterpiece.
Speaker:So it would be
Speaker:unnecessarily
Speaker:complicated
Speaker:to be honest.
Speaker:, number two would
Speaker:be okay if it would
Speaker:be a start frame,
Speaker:of course, prefab.
Speaker:So even if I wouldn't
Speaker:go to a prefab company,
Speaker:I would just do it
Speaker:in a shed by myself.
Speaker:But the timber
Speaker:construction is
Speaker:getting wet is for me
Speaker:an absolutely no go.
Speaker:So.
Speaker:Would be another
Speaker:topic we can talk off.
Speaker:But I would never ever
Speaker:build with four by two
Speaker:because in my opinion,
Speaker:the toothpicks, so
Speaker:the minimum I would
Speaker:maybe goes with 60 to
Speaker:140 millimeters fully
Speaker:insulated with wood
Speaker:fiber on the outside,
Speaker:So, it's 60 mil
Speaker:thick, by the
Speaker:yes, 60 months thick
Speaker:by 140 million,
Speaker:all down for the
Speaker:45 by 140, right?
Speaker:But 60 by 140, like
Speaker:tell me why you
Speaker:would choose that.
Speaker:Is that just so you
Speaker:can sleep at nighttime?
Speaker:no, it's just
Speaker:about strength.
Speaker:So you guys are
Speaker:passion, passive
Speaker:house builders,
Speaker:and I'm pretty sure
Speaker:you Both use like
Speaker:European windows
Speaker:or German windows,
Speaker:double, triple glazed.
Speaker:And you also use
Speaker:the entry doors
Speaker:from Germany.
Speaker:And did you close
Speaker:the, these doors one
Speaker:time properly, and
Speaker:then you have the
Speaker:whole house shaking.
Speaker:thickness of the timber
Speaker:also has to do with
Speaker:the swing resistance
Speaker:of the building.
Speaker:So that means kind of
Speaker:the inner strength of
Speaker:each single stud has
Speaker:actually to do also
Speaker:with the thickness
Speaker:of the timber.
Speaker:As I would do like
Speaker:wood fiber 60 mil
Speaker:on the outsides, you
Speaker:actually firmly break
Speaker:the whole structure.
Speaker:So even if you add
Speaker:on thickness of the
Speaker:timber, I'm pretty
Speaker:sure it wouldn't
Speaker:have a big impact.
Speaker:, can I ask you, right?
Speaker:Obviously passive
Speaker:house is a very
Speaker:rigid building
Speaker:standard, right?
Speaker:And if we were
Speaker:getting a building.
Speaker:to passive house
Speaker:standard with 140 by 45
Speaker:frames and insulation.
Speaker:Would you still do wood
Speaker:fiber on the outside?
Speaker:Oh, yeah.
Speaker:Having wood fiber has
Speaker:nothing to do, , like
Speaker:most of the Proclamer
Speaker:products, sorry I don't
Speaker:have to mention it, but
Speaker:they have nothing to
Speaker:do with passive house.
Speaker:So using principles,
Speaker:and applying in a
Speaker:passive house, and they
Speaker:don't always have to
Speaker:be, they don't have
Speaker:to correlate each
Speaker:other all the time.
Speaker:So like having
Speaker:wood fiber on the
Speaker:outsides is because
Speaker:you have thermal
Speaker:mass on the outside.
Speaker:I love the properties
Speaker:of wood fiber because
Speaker:you have high density,
Speaker:you have high moisture
Speaker:absorbance, which can
Speaker:be wrong in the wrong.
Speaker:Climate it's always
Speaker:very important to
Speaker:mention also, but it's
Speaker:a natural product.
Speaker:It's highly
Speaker:variable permeable.
Speaker:It's has some
Speaker:bracing properties.
Speaker:You could, if you
Speaker:want to render
Speaker:directly onto it,
Speaker:it's natural products.
Speaker:You don't have
Speaker:any off gassing
Speaker:of the material.
Speaker:And specifically in
Speaker:summer, it performs
Speaker:well, if you would.
Speaker:Insulate your voids
Speaker:with wood fiber and
Speaker:you put as a flex
Speaker:insulation and you
Speaker:have a hardboard
Speaker:on the outside.
Speaker:It's just my opinion.
Speaker:The best way
Speaker:how to build.
Speaker:I guess it's hard
Speaker:you've never been
Speaker:in one like that.
Speaker:like, we see our
Speaker:passive houses as
Speaker:super comfortable
Speaker:places and healthy
Speaker:places to be in, but
Speaker:we've never been to
Speaker:that next little home.
Speaker:I think that's the hard
Speaker:I
Speaker:never been in it.
Speaker:, and you know
Speaker:what Daniel just.
Speaker:explaining that to me
Speaker:right now makes total
Speaker:sense to me, right?
Speaker:Because, you know,
Speaker:we think to ourselves
Speaker:because we're building
Speaker:a passive house
Speaker:and because it's
Speaker:gone through PHPP
Speaker:and it's hitting
Speaker:all the metrics,
Speaker:we think, oh, well,
Speaker:we've got a, we've
Speaker:got a great house.
Speaker:But you just explaining
Speaker:that then with the
Speaker:thermal mass and the
Speaker:natural components
Speaker:of it, and even the
Speaker:moisture absorption
Speaker:Ability of wood fiber.
Speaker:It's another element.
Speaker:It's another layer
Speaker:of health within
Speaker:that business.
Speaker:And I know this is
Speaker:probably a whole
Speaker:other topic to go
Speaker:down a rabbit hole on.
Speaker:, but just touching
Speaker:on building
Speaker:physics right now.
Speaker:Building physics
Speaker:is something, as
Speaker:you said, is taught
Speaker:as an apprentice
Speaker:, in Germany.
Speaker:I mean, Matt and I have
Speaker:just kind of stumbled
Speaker:across building physics
Speaker:because we just wanted
Speaker:to build better.
Speaker:You coming to Australia
Speaker:with your previous
Speaker:knowledge of building
Speaker:physics, where do
Speaker:you see Australia's
Speaker:climate currently
Speaker:at this point?
Speaker:At, on the 4th
Speaker:of July, 2024?
Speaker:Yeah, still
Speaker:in the basics.
Speaker:So when you have the
Speaker:energy consultants,
Speaker:for example, because
Speaker:I'm involved quite
Speaker:a bit in commercial
Speaker:also, or big resi
Speaker:builds, and sometimes
Speaker:I'm shocked what
Speaker:they're coming up with,
Speaker:because we keep talking
Speaker:about, are we going
Speaker:to talk more about
Speaker:energy And energy.
Speaker:And energy and more
Speaker:insulation, but to
Speaker:leave building physics
Speaker:completely behind.
Speaker:And what is
Speaker:part of building
Speaker:physics Thermally?
Speaker:Yes, it's part of
Speaker:building physics.
Speaker:But mainly important
Speaker:is moisture management
Speaker:and condensation.
Speaker:And condensation
Speaker:happens after a
Speaker:mismanaged moisture
Speaker:management and
Speaker:condensation happens
Speaker:after mold, so it's
Speaker:more likely to have
Speaker:mold and condensation
Speaker:and even these.
Speaker:Basic knowledge,
Speaker:we still don't
Speaker:have even the basic
Speaker:knowledge about it.
Speaker:Widely accessible
Speaker:on the market.
Speaker:So the thing is
Speaker:I didn't learn
Speaker:deep building
Speaker:physics in Germany,
Speaker:apprenticeship also.
Speaker:It was more like you
Speaker:follow these, these,
Speaker:these, these steps.
Speaker:Yeah.
Speaker:Tightness layer on
Speaker:the inside, fully
Speaker:insulated, no air
Speaker:gaps on the inside,
Speaker:on the outside, vapor
Speaker:permanent membrane
Speaker:on the outside, and
Speaker:you should be right.
Speaker:so it was kind of
Speaker:a really standard
Speaker:way, how to do it.
Speaker:Standardizing things.
Speaker:That's the most
Speaker:important part.
Speaker:It makes it a little
Speaker:bit more difficult
Speaker:in Australia because
Speaker:you have different
Speaker:climate zones.
Speaker:So what will work in
Speaker:Melbourne does mean it
Speaker:will work in Sydney.
Speaker:The temperatures are
Speaker:relatively similar
Speaker:during the year, but
Speaker:the big difference
Speaker:are humidity.
Speaker:So for example, in
Speaker:Sydney, I had in the
Speaker:place where I'm living
Speaker:over month, month,
Speaker:month, 80 percent plus
Speaker:humidity on the outside
Speaker:and also on the inside,
Speaker:because I live in
Speaker:such a terrible place.
Speaker:So it means back
Speaker:diffusion is a
Speaker:huge problem here.
Speaker:You don't have to go
Speaker:into deep into it.
Speaker:So I'm just saying
Speaker:is Australia has
Speaker:many different
Speaker:climates, so we can't.
Speaker:Just generalize
Speaker:everything, but I
Speaker:think it would be a
Speaker:complete different
Speaker:topic, because you
Speaker:could go kilometers
Speaker:and kilometers
Speaker:down the hall back
Speaker:to the basics.
Speaker:I think we need to have
Speaker:a better understanding
Speaker:and the basics have
Speaker:to be taught and
Speaker:TAFE and have to be
Speaker:easy, accessible,
Speaker:the reason I ask
Speaker:that, Daniel is that
Speaker:like, I'm assuming
Speaker:you're around about
Speaker:our age sort of.
Speaker:Late thirties, forties,
Speaker:early forties, um, 41.
Speaker:Yep.
Speaker:Same my age.
Speaker:So what you're going
Speaker:back 20 odd years with
Speaker:your, when you did
Speaker:your apprenticeship,
Speaker:like touching on
Speaker:like basic building
Speaker:physics, where you're
Speaker:talking about really
Speaker:good external building
Speaker:wrap, really good
Speaker:internal building wrap.
Speaker:Which was new at
Speaker:this time, sorry
Speaker:to interrupt you.
Speaker:Like the Intello has
Speaker:been invented 2001.
Speaker:So it means kind of
Speaker:this date, no, 2003.
Speaker:So this was just new.
Speaker:So, I just thought I'd
Speaker:interrupt you, but it's
Speaker:an interesting part.
Speaker:So the year 2000,
Speaker:when I started my
Speaker:apprenticeship, the
Speaker:worst building you
Speaker:could build is a timber
Speaker:construction building.
Speaker:So it was a timber.
Speaker:Now stay with built
Speaker:brick and normal roof
Speaker:when you're fine.
Speaker:Because what we did
Speaker:is we had to poly
Speaker:polyethylene foil.
Speaker:On the inside and
Speaker:you said, actually,
Speaker:if you're absolutely
Speaker:tight on the inside and
Speaker:tight on the outside,
Speaker:you should be fine.
Speaker:And it can work as
Speaker:long as you don't
Speaker:introduce moisture.
Speaker:So the problem is
Speaker:in the eighties,
Speaker:nineties, we built so
Speaker:many terrible timber
Speaker:constructions that
Speaker:by the two thousands,
Speaker:we had to deal with
Speaker:so many problems
Speaker:because we improved
Speaker:energy efficiency.
Speaker:We ended up with so
Speaker:many problems that
Speaker:were in the beginning
Speaker:of two thousands.
Speaker:No one wanted to build
Speaker:timber construction.
Speaker:So we just had to
Speaker:deal with all the
Speaker:mistakes of the
Speaker:previous decades.
Speaker:This was just a
Speaker:turning point.
Speaker:It was a air tightness.
Speaker:If you don't build air
Speaker:tightness, you stuff
Speaker:up your whole house.
Speaker:that's because
Speaker:we changed the
Speaker:drying potential
Speaker:of the structure,
Speaker:is that correct?
Speaker:Yes, exactly.
Speaker:and where the
Speaker:building, yeah.
Speaker:so means kind of, as I
Speaker:said, if you're vapor
Speaker:tight on the inside
Speaker:and vapor tight on
Speaker:the outside, it can
Speaker:work, but very often
Speaker:the neutral holds
Speaker:for the power points.
Speaker:And this is when
Speaker:you actually have
Speaker:internal moisture
Speaker:getting your structure
Speaker:and you trap it.
Speaker:Then I said,
Speaker:yeah, okay.
Speaker:We got it because
Speaker:you have condensation
Speaker:on the outside
Speaker:of the building.
Speaker:Then they say,
Speaker:okay, you have to
Speaker:be vapor permeable
Speaker:on the outside.
Speaker:So we introduced vapor
Speaker:permeable membranes
Speaker:on the outside and
Speaker:that worked okay also.
Speaker:But the problem is it
Speaker:works in winter, but
Speaker:not in summer because
Speaker:in summer you have
Speaker:external moisture
Speaker:getting in, hitting
Speaker:the plastic foil on
Speaker:your head, condensation
Speaker:on the inside.
Speaker:And that's funny
Speaker:with Germany, where
Speaker:we have relatively
Speaker:low humidity on the
Speaker:outside because you're
Speaker:close to the Alps.
Speaker:So we have actually.
Speaker:All year long,
Speaker:relatively dry air.
Speaker:We're not talking about
Speaker:Australia where we
Speaker:have 80 percent plus.
Speaker:So then we had to
Speaker:change the inner layer.
Speaker:Luckily, by mistake,
Speaker:now it's proclaimed
Speaker:by mistake, invented
Speaker:the intelligent
Speaker:air tightness
Speaker:layer function,
Speaker:the interlo layer.
Speaker:The original one
Speaker:was paper based.
Speaker:Then we had
Speaker:the , PP one.
Speaker:Polyethylene one
Speaker:coming out and this
Speaker:actually changed
Speaker:the construction.
Speaker:So since then, 2000,
Speaker:since the year 2003,
Speaker:we are actually able
Speaker:to build a perfect
Speaker:wall buildup and we
Speaker:realized, okay, it's
Speaker:actually working
Speaker:around the world.
Speaker:What I'm just saying
Speaker:is based on the
Speaker:building physics
Speaker:part, I was just
Speaker:in this, time where
Speaker:actually everything was
Speaker:changing a little bit.
Speaker:So panic mode,
Speaker:air tightness,
Speaker:mold, everyone's
Speaker:very afraid of it.
Speaker:And I jumped on
Speaker:this wagon also.
Speaker:Sorry, Amish.
Speaker:I think I've
Speaker:lost my train of
Speaker:thought here too.
Speaker:But I guess one of, one
Speaker:of the reasons why I
Speaker:was trying to bring it
Speaker:up was the fact that,
Speaker:you know, this is old
Speaker:news to you that, you
Speaker:know, for your whole
Speaker:time in the industry,
Speaker:20 plus years, you've
Speaker:always kind of had a
Speaker:basic understanding
Speaker:of building physics.
Speaker:Now in Australia,
Speaker:it almost feels for
Speaker:the, which is great.
Speaker:The building physics
Speaker:is now becoming
Speaker:cool, right?
Speaker:Like building physics
Speaker:is like, this is the
Speaker:cool thing to do.
Speaker:It's high performance,
Speaker:this and building
Speaker:wrap that, which
Speaker:is, which is great.
Speaker:But we are, I guess
Speaker:the point I'm trying
Speaker:to make is we're
Speaker:so far behind here.
Speaker:Like this is such a
Speaker:new thing for us in
Speaker:Australia, but building
Speaker:physics remains true,
Speaker:whether you're building
Speaker:in Germany 25 years
Speaker:ago, or building in
Speaker:Sydney in 2024, like
Speaker:it's exactly the same.
Speaker:It's the same
Speaker:principles that need
Speaker:to be followed, which
Speaker:is why it's amazing
Speaker:that there are people
Speaker:like you out here,
Speaker:passionate, who give
Speaker:a fuck about building,
Speaker:who are helping educate
Speaker:our industry now
Speaker:and making it sexy.
Speaker:Because, you know,
Speaker:I know myself, I
Speaker:like things to be
Speaker:sexy and looking
Speaker:at your beautiful,
Speaker:looking at your
Speaker:beautiful face here
Speaker:and your detailing.
Speaker:And it gets me excited
Speaker:when I, uh, when I say
Speaker:what you're doing on
Speaker:your YouTube channel.
Speaker:Airboss Dan, by the
Speaker:Are we, are we, are
Speaker:we setting up a new
Speaker:Tinder profile now?
Speaker:What's going on?
Speaker:Apple's there.
Speaker:Tinder.
Speaker:Oh,
Speaker:Dan's actually
Speaker:messaged, Dan's
Speaker:messaged me during
Speaker:this and he's asked
Speaker:to take a screenshot
Speaker:profile on this.
Speaker:I'll ask everyone
Speaker:at the moment.
Speaker:Again,
Speaker:So I, I want to, um,
Speaker:for someone that maybe
Speaker:doesn't understand
Speaker:building physics
Speaker:and wants to learn
Speaker:more, where would you
Speaker:suggest they start?
Speaker:it's advertisement
Speaker:for, The company
Speaker:you're working for
Speaker:is because
Speaker:your pro climber hat
Speaker:off for five seconds.
Speaker:now, but I don't
Speaker:know anyone else was
Speaker:teaching building
Speaker:physics in Australia
Speaker:at the moment.
Speaker:So I really don't know
Speaker:because like just to go
Speaker:step back before I came
Speaker:to Australia, I was
Speaker:really looking through
Speaker:all the installation
Speaker:guide materials from
Speaker:manufacturers from
Speaker:competitors also.
Speaker:And I couldn't find
Speaker:anyone who's really
Speaker:showing people
Speaker:how to install
Speaker:products properly.
Speaker:How to install
Speaker:membranes properly,
Speaker:because if you have
Speaker:a good product, if
Speaker:you don't install
Speaker:it, right, you don't
Speaker:have a good outcome.
Speaker:So that's why I'm
Speaker:very proud of that.
Speaker:I actually created.
Speaker:So we have a very
Speaker:crystal clear
Speaker:guideline, how to
Speaker:install and how to
Speaker:follow things step
Speaker:by step by step.
Speaker:Um, that's why
Speaker:I think like.
Speaker:What we do like the
Speaker:education and training
Speaker:part is great.
Speaker:Passive house
Speaker:during the passive
Speaker:cost training is
Speaker:bloody awesome.
Speaker:Also recommend everyone
Speaker:when you pass a
Speaker:false course, even
Speaker:moisture management
Speaker:is not part of it.
Speaker:It's more like air
Speaker:quality, but not
Speaker:really condensation
Speaker:and moisture management
Speaker:risks, which I
Speaker:hope will come in.
Speaker:But I wouldn't know
Speaker:where you actually
Speaker:really have building
Speaker:physics courses.
Speaker:Maybe, you know,
Speaker:more than I do.
Speaker:it sounds to me like
Speaker:we need to start one.
Speaker:I've just written
Speaker:it down that you've
Speaker:just said no one is
Speaker:teaching building
Speaker:physics, right?
Speaker:And the fact that
Speaker:you got taught basic
Speaker:building physics 20
Speaker:plus years ago, and
Speaker:there's no one in
Speaker:Australia teaching
Speaker:that now, it just
Speaker:blows my mind.
Speaker:Yeah.
Speaker:That's why
Speaker:the mindful builder
Speaker:should start something.
Speaker:The Mindful Builder
Speaker:building physics course
Speaker:Mindful
Speaker:builder
Speaker:sure.
Speaker:with Airbus, Dan.
Speaker:I love it.
Speaker:I think, you know,
Speaker:also that I'm part of
Speaker:the future build co
Speaker:platform also,
Speaker:and That's going
Speaker:to be part of it.
Speaker:Also, we have the first
Speaker:courses and I'm pretty
Speaker:sure we would have it
Speaker:there, but it's always
Speaker:good to have different
Speaker:platforms also.
Speaker:do you think you get
Speaker:enough credit for the
Speaker:amount of information
Speaker:that you've been passed
Speaker:on to everyone else
Speaker:Depends on, on
Speaker:what level we're
Speaker:talking about.
Speaker:So like from you
Speaker:guys, builders, the
Speaker:guys who really.
Speaker:Are you interested
Speaker:in, yes, like you
Speaker:had last week in
Speaker:events in Middagong
Speaker:with Ed Poulton.
Speaker:And this effort, this
Speaker:guy put on to bring me
Speaker:to the event, like two
Speaker:food trucks, coffee
Speaker:truck, everything else.
Speaker:Like he really
Speaker:organized a massive
Speaker:events because he
Speaker:asked me and say,
Speaker:yeah, I have to
Speaker:check when I'm have
Speaker:time and have time.
Speaker:And he ended up having
Speaker:a massive events.
Speaker:It was a whole
Speaker:day event with 40
Speaker:plus builders and
Speaker:a few presence for
Speaker:master builders
Speaker:have been there too.
Speaker:And the effort he put
Speaker:in just to bring me
Speaker:there and we run a
Speaker:whole day training was
Speaker:And that's a very high
Speaker:level of appreciation
Speaker:if you ask me to be
Speaker:honest, because like
Speaker:he knew exactly,
Speaker:okay, Daniel is time
Speaker:precious because
Speaker:he's traveling a lot.
Speaker:He's doing trainings,
Speaker:he's doing product
Speaker:testings and all
Speaker:the other stuff.
Speaker:And so it would
Speaker:say in this level.
Speaker:With builders, I
Speaker:definitely think
Speaker:of a high level
Speaker:of appreciation.
Speaker:Maybe the rest
Speaker:of the market.
Speaker:I'm not sure.
Speaker:who doesn't
Speaker:appreciate you?
Speaker:commercial very often.
Speaker:I have the feeling
Speaker:like, because, and
Speaker:lots of like some
Speaker:of the passive house
Speaker:builders when the
Speaker:retrofit buildings, I
Speaker:had a few sites, for
Speaker:example, the architects
Speaker:have been a bit weird
Speaker:also not showed up.
Speaker:So they showed
Speaker:up way too late.
Speaker:For example, I
Speaker:give them tips.
Speaker:They didn't
Speaker:even listen.
Speaker:And the thing is
Speaker:like, my experience is
Speaker:maybe 60, 70 percent
Speaker:retrofitting based
Speaker:and 30, 40 percent
Speaker:a new build based.
Speaker:So it means kind
Speaker:of, I have a very
Speaker:strong knowledge
Speaker:about retrofitting,
Speaker:especially with
Speaker:wood fiber and all
Speaker:these problems.
Speaker:And when I come on site
Speaker:and then I see they're
Speaker:not really listening,
Speaker:In my head, I just turn
Speaker:around and walk off.
Speaker:So I don't spend
Speaker:another minute because
Speaker:I know like you guys
Speaker:and so many other guys
Speaker:actually say, Oh, cool.
Speaker:I'm really
Speaker:interested in what
Speaker:you have to say.
Speaker:And because if
Speaker:you would talk
Speaker:about retrofit at
Speaker:some point, it's a
Speaker:complete new topic.
Speaker:And that must kill you
Speaker:because the amount of
Speaker:times that I've called
Speaker:you for information
Speaker:and all you want to
Speaker:do is give every bit
Speaker:of information across
Speaker:to me that you can.
Speaker:And then someone
Speaker:who probably doesn't
Speaker:understand and
Speaker:respect the person
Speaker:they actually have
Speaker:working with them
Speaker:and the luxury of
Speaker:having you on site.
Speaker:I don't even
Speaker:get you on site.
Speaker:They have you
Speaker:on site and they
Speaker:don't respect you.
Speaker:That to me is
Speaker:infuriating.
Speaker:propose something?
Speaker:So, I mean, it's no
Speaker:secret that I'm part
Speaker:of Sustainable Builders
Speaker:Alliance and, helping
Speaker:activate a site in
Speaker:Brunswick in Victoria.
Speaker:I'm going to throw us
Speaker:all under the bus here
Speaker:and let's, let's put on
Speaker:an event in, I'm going
Speaker:to say in September,
Speaker:let's put ourselves
Speaker:out here and make
Speaker:ourselves accountable.
Speaker:In September, let's
Speaker:hold a building
Speaker:physics for dummies
Speaker:hosted by Airboss
Speaker:Dan, Matthew Carlin
Speaker:and Hamish and the
Speaker:master dummy and SBA.
Speaker:Yeah.
Speaker:that would be amazing.
Speaker:I'm in Melbourne anyway
Speaker:for product testing,
Speaker:so if you can line
Speaker:it up would be even
Speaker:better.
Speaker:yeah, so, so
Speaker:We'll definitely
Speaker:get that going.
Speaker:uh, I'm, I'm also
Speaker:conscious of time,
Speaker:but you've also got
Speaker:an event coming up
Speaker:in Melbourne talking
Speaker:about Jesse's special,
Speaker:uh, book that I
Speaker:have next to me.
Speaker:Do you just
Speaker:yeah.
Speaker:quick plug to that?
Speaker:Have you sold
Speaker:all the tickets?
Speaker:Oh yeah.
Speaker:So be, I think a
Speaker:hundred, 120% oversold.
Speaker:So like, like
Speaker:120 spots.
Speaker:So 110 spots may have
Speaker:already 180 or so.
Speaker:So it's
Speaker:over.
Speaker:won't
Speaker:Maybe
Speaker:can I get a VIP ticket?
Speaker:Cause I didn't get one.
Speaker:I
Speaker:Yeah.
Speaker:one.
Speaker:Oh, you didn't get
Speaker:invited out for dinner.
Speaker:You didn't get
Speaker:that invite?
Speaker:You know what, Dan,
Speaker:Dan does call me every
Speaker:now and then and
Speaker:say, we need to talk.
Speaker:We need to talk.
Speaker:yes, maybe sometimes
Speaker:you have to talk
Speaker:about after also,
Speaker:which shouldn't make
Speaker:it on the podcast.
Speaker:you don't think just
Speaker:our general like little
Speaker:chit chat discussion
Speaker:is interesting
Speaker:to other people
Speaker:listening right now?
Speaker:Okay.
Speaker:nah, I wanted to
Speaker:say some naughty,
Speaker:naughty topics.
Speaker:So,
Speaker:it.
Speaker:I think it is important
Speaker:to kind of also
Speaker:demonstrate that,
Speaker:you know, Dan, you're
Speaker:just an easy going
Speaker:kind of guy, right.
Speaker:Who's really generous
Speaker:for this time.
Speaker:And the fact that we
Speaker:can just jump on here
Speaker:with pretty much no
Speaker:idea of what we're
Speaker:going to talk about.
Speaker:And now what we've
Speaker:been talking for over
Speaker:an hour now, um, of
Speaker:really interesting,
Speaker:beneficial stuff.
Speaker:Like, I mean,
Speaker:I don't know
Speaker:where I'm
Speaker:many topics we just
Speaker:say, I just want to say
Speaker:thank you, but yeah,
Speaker:yeah,
Speaker:topics we just,
Speaker:talk about?
Speaker:I'm passionate about
Speaker:so many things.
Speaker:We could talk about
Speaker:gin and tonics, what
Speaker:my favorite gin is.
Speaker:What's the
Speaker:first thing that comes
Speaker:to your mind when I say
Speaker:need to build better?
Speaker:Yeah.
Speaker:I would always
Speaker:say, just take
Speaker:pride in your work.
Speaker:but it's difficult.
Speaker:the education, I'm
Speaker:very frustrated with
Speaker:the education system
Speaker:because my biggest
Speaker:experience is.
Speaker:People complaining
Speaker:about, oh, it's so
Speaker:difficult to find a
Speaker:good builder and, and
Speaker:say, yes, it can be,
Speaker:but not because the
Speaker:builder is stupid.
Speaker:That's not what's
Speaker:happening here.
Speaker:What I realized, I
Speaker:have the feeling is the
Speaker:biggest problem we have
Speaker:here in Australia is.
Speaker:For builders to get
Speaker:to quality content
Speaker:and quality knowledge.
Speaker:And it doesn't mean
Speaker:because we're all
Speaker:sipping through
Speaker:social media all the
Speaker:time, you see all
Speaker:sorts of things, but
Speaker:it's not a good way.
Speaker:In my, that's my
Speaker:personal opinion to
Speaker:copy UK because UK
Speaker:has still massive
Speaker:problems, like just in
Speaker:London, I think they
Speaker:have hundreds of people
Speaker:freezing to death
Speaker:every year in their
Speaker:homes because they
Speaker:can't afford the energy
Speaker:bills because the house
Speaker:is a terrible cold.
Speaker:So why should we follow
Speaker:UK then if this is
Speaker:actually a serious
Speaker:problem over there?
Speaker:And the billing
Speaker:standards.
Speaker:So I'm just saying is
Speaker:how do we know what
Speaker:quality content is?
Speaker:If you see it on
Speaker:social media or
Speaker:somewhere else,
Speaker:clickbait, that,
Speaker:that, that's how it
Speaker:works, so it's that
Speaker:instant gratification.
Speaker:yes.
Speaker:But what I'm trying to
Speaker:say is kind of, I see
Speaker:so many builders, many,
Speaker:many, many, I can say
Speaker:hundreds and thousands
Speaker:of builders are trained
Speaker:in the last four years,
Speaker:and I would say the
Speaker:percentage was like,
Speaker:who walked off and
Speaker:say, yeah, I was okay
Speaker:and wasn't interested
Speaker:is less than 5%.
Speaker:I would say at least
Speaker:90, 95 percent everyone
Speaker:was actually interested
Speaker:and say like, yes, it
Speaker:was worthwhile spending
Speaker:two, three hours,
Speaker:sometimes up to four,
Speaker:four and a half hours.
Speaker:So it was worth
Speaker:every minute spending
Speaker:with you because it
Speaker:actually was about.
Speaker:taking something home
Speaker:and even if it's just
Speaker:one topic, but they're
Speaker:taking something home
Speaker:because it's kind
Speaker:of proven experience
Speaker:science based, but
Speaker:where do we find
Speaker:And I, I think it's as
Speaker:we go back to that we
Speaker:talked about earlier,
Speaker:we need to complete
Speaker:reform on a whole
Speaker:industry, the way that
Speaker:people are licensed,
Speaker:that people are
Speaker:held, like, referred
Speaker:to themselves as
Speaker:professionals, the way
Speaker:we educate our kids.
Speaker:Like, I have this whole
Speaker:idea is like, if you
Speaker:want to be a tradie,
Speaker:do you really need to
Speaker:go through year 12?
Speaker:like, why can't
Speaker:let year 12 be that
Speaker:first year of that
Speaker:sort of full time
Speaker:schooling where they
Speaker:learn how to be.
Speaker:carpenter, That's when
Speaker:we spat out really
Speaker:good tradies that
Speaker:were really passionate
Speaker:about what they did.
Speaker:Now it is just turned
Speaker:into this government
Speaker:tick box where you go
Speaker:to your trade school,
Speaker:we get paid because
Speaker:we got them completed.
Speaker:Like they don't even
Speaker:get a pass fail now.
Speaker:And you don't even
Speaker:get a pass fail.
Speaker:It's just you pass
Speaker:so they can get their
Speaker:government funding.
Speaker:That's the problem.
Speaker:The trade school just
Speaker:wants to get paid.
Speaker:They don't give
Speaker:a about teaching
Speaker:the kids properly.
Speaker:Yeah.
Speaker:And the problem is,
Speaker:I know quite a few
Speaker:teachers and nearly
Speaker:in every TAFE you find
Speaker:some very motivated
Speaker:and interested
Speaker:teachers, but they
Speaker:can't get it in.
Speaker:The fight so hard,
Speaker:um, to get it in
Speaker:there and they're
Speaker:just getting blocked
Speaker:out, blocked out.
Speaker:And now I think another
Speaker:weather tightness
Speaker:course got canceled
Speaker:here in Sydney.
Speaker:Also, I'm not sure if
Speaker:it's a hundred percent
Speaker:true, but it's just as
Speaker:thing as they always
Speaker:have a few teachers
Speaker:really want to improve
Speaker:the system, but they're
Speaker:just banging the heads
Speaker:against the walls.
Speaker:And that's
Speaker:pretty much it.
Speaker:A shame.
Speaker:It's all because we've
Speaker:always done it that
Speaker:way and people are so
Speaker:afraid to make change.
Speaker:Like, I get so
Speaker:frustrated about
Speaker:this whole topic.
Speaker:Like, we have
Speaker:the answers.
Speaker:It's not like
Speaker:we're doing this
Speaker:for the first time
Speaker:and we're taking
Speaker:huge leap of faith.
Speaker:Like, we just want
Speaker:that short term gain
Speaker:that it's all fixed
Speaker:within the end of
Speaker:the year because oh,
Speaker:we've got an extra
Speaker:80, 000 tradies.
Speaker:Oh, we've we've
Speaker:done the job but
Speaker:how about we look
Speaker:at trying to at least
Speaker:get 30, 000 good
Speaker:tradies for 10 years.
Speaker:No, I,
Speaker:I but I have a
Speaker:quick anecdote.
Speaker:So I had a TAFE
Speaker:training maybe half
Speaker:a year, a year ago.
Speaker:Can't remember
Speaker:a metal bank.
Speaker:brand new TAFE, like
Speaker:400 million building.
Speaker:And, and they
Speaker:really want to bring
Speaker:all the weather,
Speaker:weatherproofing
Speaker:and how to install
Speaker:windows on, on board.
Speaker:Also, which you say
Speaker:it's trouble because
Speaker:we don't have the
Speaker:time to teach it.
Speaker:Funny enough is that's
Speaker:Daniel in his big
Speaker:mouth, to be honest.
Speaker:So, because like
Speaker:a trend had one to
Speaker:cause all with the
Speaker:apprentice also, and
Speaker:I had my toolbox and
Speaker:I had like one of the
Speaker:chisels because all
Speaker:my chisels, you can
Speaker:actually shave yourself
Speaker:with them and had them
Speaker:in the toolbox too.
Speaker:And I saw one of the
Speaker:apprentice actually
Speaker:hammering it out and
Speaker:you saw like all the
Speaker:edges are really rough
Speaker:and I just gave him a
Speaker:tip because he's like,
Speaker:cause I was looking at
Speaker:him and said, Oh, how
Speaker:would you do it then?
Speaker:So yeah, I grabbed
Speaker:my chisel and I
Speaker:really just shaved
Speaker:the sides off.
Speaker:So they're really,
Speaker:really perfect.
Speaker:It's a really
Speaker:nice and smooth.
Speaker:The teacher came
Speaker:into me and yelled
Speaker:at me what I'm doing
Speaker:there and not have
Speaker:to show anything
Speaker:to his students.
Speaker:I said, yeah, he
Speaker:will ask me because
Speaker:he was interested.
Speaker:So that's not your
Speaker:job, how to show it.
Speaker:You just do it how you
Speaker:saw it on the video.
Speaker:That's just a
Speaker:video on a video.
Speaker:What?
Speaker:Huh?
Speaker:And then he hammered
Speaker:it out and it was
Speaker:very, very rough
Speaker:and it didn't look.
Speaker:Any good at all.
Speaker:Well, it's just a,
Speaker:where's the point.
Speaker:First of all, if
Speaker:you show something
Speaker:practically show by
Speaker:your hand, you have
Speaker:to show that, you
Speaker:know, what you're
Speaker:talking off, but
Speaker:that's the rule.
Speaker:Number one, it means
Speaker:kind of specific
Speaker:because another Dan
Speaker:fact, Mitch, we, we
Speaker:didn't know, but I
Speaker:trained karate for over
Speaker:14 years and I was a
Speaker:karate trainer, for,
Speaker:Nearly 10 years plus.
Speaker:And what happened,
Speaker:my teacher on top
Speaker:also, and he said,
Speaker:rule number one,
Speaker:whenever you teach
Speaker:your students, you
Speaker:always show exactly
Speaker:how to do it.
Speaker:And you train
Speaker:with them.
Speaker:You're not staying
Speaker:on top, like,
Speaker:like a big boy.
Speaker:And if I say, sure,
Speaker:what you can do is now
Speaker:you train with them.
Speaker:And that's
Speaker:important because
Speaker:then they actually
Speaker:take you serious.
Speaker:Being a master, being
Speaker:a sensei, really
Speaker:kind of that you
Speaker:really know what's
Speaker:going on because then
Speaker:people respect you.
Speaker:so don't fuck with Dan.
Speaker:Can I just jump in on
Speaker:one trade school story?
Speaker:Can I just
Speaker:jump on in one?
Speaker:So I actually pulled
Speaker:my my team from
Speaker:the trading school
Speaker:that and I'm going
Speaker:to be over here.
Speaker:They were originally
Speaker:known as one of the
Speaker:better TAFE teaching
Speaker:3d apprentices.
Speaker:I had to pull them
Speaker:because I was telling
Speaker:my team that what they
Speaker:were doing is overkill.
Speaker:We don't need
Speaker:to install a
Speaker:window like that.
Speaker:Don't worry about that.
Speaker:Like don't
Speaker:worry about it.
Speaker:Who cares?
Speaker:That's just too
Speaker:much detail.
Speaker:That's an issue And
Speaker:again, like there's
Speaker:good and there's bad.
Speaker:There's not all the
Speaker:TAFE teachers are bad,
Speaker:but when you don't have
Speaker:good TAFE teachers,
Speaker:the message gets lost.
Speaker:You know what my
Speaker:problem was when I was,
Speaker:when I came back from
Speaker:school and I say, yeah,
Speaker:this is what we have,
Speaker:how we have to do it.
Speaker:So I was actually
Speaker:going to my bosses and
Speaker:none is how you do it.
Speaker:And that's a
Speaker:new standard.
Speaker:And so always
Speaker:was actually told
Speaker:what's happening
Speaker:in the future.
Speaker:That's what you learn.
Speaker:It's cool.
Speaker:And that's reality
Speaker:is different.
Speaker:but most of the time
Speaker:you actually realized
Speaker:that now the new
Speaker:standard actually
Speaker:got implemented in
Speaker:a building code,
Speaker:which is different
Speaker:anyway, in Germany,
Speaker:I'm, um, probably going
Speaker:to take an opportunity
Speaker:now to, to wrap this
Speaker:up because I think
Speaker:if we're given any
Speaker:more time, we're just
Speaker:going to keep talking
Speaker:all afternoon because
Speaker:I think between the
Speaker:three of us, uh, we
Speaker:could probably solve
Speaker:all the problems in the
Speaker:construction industry.
Speaker:Dan, thank you so much
Speaker:for coming on today.
Speaker:Um, you have been, a
Speaker:massive influence on.
Speaker:Where I've taken my
Speaker:business over the past
Speaker:five to six years.
Speaker:And I feel really
Speaker:privileged to have
Speaker:your phone number
Speaker:in my phone and be
Speaker:able to call your
Speaker:friend as well.
Speaker:And, the time that you
Speaker:give me personally,
Speaker:and I know Matt is
Speaker:the same, is always
Speaker:incredibly generous.
Speaker:So thank you very
Speaker:much for that.
Speaker:And I am very much
Speaker:looking forward to
Speaker:having you down in
Speaker:Melbourne to do that,
Speaker:um, building physics
Speaker:for dummies with the
Speaker:Mindful Builder and
Speaker:Sustainable Builders
Speaker:Alliance in September,
Speaker:October this year.
Speaker:think it's a
Speaker:great idea, yes.
Speaker:I reckon Cam on row.
Speaker:We're just going
Speaker:to sign him up
Speaker:for that as well.
Speaker:He's coming.
Speaker:Trust me, Cam was going
Speaker:to be there as well.
Speaker:You and I just are
Speaker:the same brain,
Speaker:without a doubt.
Speaker:Drew can be the emcee.
Speaker:can we finish
Speaker:with up something
Speaker:more positive?
Speaker:Because I always
Speaker:struggle, um, because
Speaker:we do a lot of
Speaker:presentations and you,
Speaker:of course, you talk
Speaker:about problems in the
Speaker:presentations, but now
Speaker:we talk about problems
Speaker:without a solution.
Speaker:So I think we should
Speaker:leave our audience, uh,
Speaker:with something like a
Speaker:solution, a direction,
Speaker:maybe you can start and
Speaker:I find something later,
Speaker:Yeah, absolutely.
Speaker:we've touched on a
Speaker:whole bunch of problems
Speaker:here, but I'm going to
Speaker:dial in on one of them.
Speaker:One of them is,
Speaker:the building fabric
Speaker:of our buildings.
Speaker:If we build them
Speaker:airtight, we're
Speaker:going to have issues.
Speaker:If we're not managing
Speaker:them properly, we're
Speaker:not putting that, wall
Speaker:assembly correctly.
Speaker:There are solutions
Speaker:there and I'm going
Speaker:to give Proclimer
Speaker:a plug here.
Speaker:They have a full
Speaker:set of, maybe we
Speaker:can reach out to
Speaker:Proclimer for some
Speaker:sponsorship, Manny.
Speaker:So maybe I'll I'll
Speaker:lean in on this a
Speaker:little bit.
Speaker:Like
Speaker:That's how I got
Speaker:Dan on today.
Speaker:have an amazing, system
Speaker:of products to use.
Speaker:and if you aren't going
Speaker:to it, , The Australian
Speaker:study presentation
Speaker:that Jesse Clark is
Speaker:going to be doing
Speaker:throughout Australia
Speaker:is definitely something
Speaker:that everybody should
Speaker:go and look at.
Speaker:And I know you can
Speaker:jump onto the pro
Speaker:climber website and
Speaker:download that study.
Speaker:It is written by
Speaker:probably someone
Speaker:who is 20 times
Speaker:smarter than me.
Speaker:Uh, but he, he has the
Speaker:ability to put into
Speaker:words that everybody
Speaker:can understand.
Speaker:So I definitely
Speaker:recommend everybody
Speaker:to read that too.
Speaker:and the install
Speaker:training, the
Speaker:install training
Speaker:that Dan does, or in
Speaker:Melbourne, we have
Speaker:performance membranes.
Speaker:They're doing,
Speaker:Hamish is wearing the
Speaker:performance membranes
Speaker:hat, and I still am
Speaker:yet to receive mine,
Speaker:Kevin, Dev and Justin.
Speaker:Um, but, there's
Speaker:so many avenues and
Speaker:this is probably the
Speaker:positive we can go
Speaker:on Dan is there, the
Speaker:information's there.
Speaker:Like, it's not
Speaker:like now, when we
Speaker:started learning, we
Speaker:had to go find it.
Speaker:We had to rely on
Speaker:your Instagram of
Speaker:you just putting some
Speaker:wrap on on the wall
Speaker:and try zooming on
Speaker:a video to learn.
Speaker:It's all there.
Speaker:We're like, the
Speaker:generation now are
Speaker:lucky to have this
Speaker:at the hand where
Speaker:I can get a new
Speaker:apprentice or a new
Speaker:employee I can send
Speaker:'em to your training.
Speaker:And they learn and
Speaker:they learn a lot and
Speaker:they're learning from
Speaker:very lovely people.
Speaker:They're like, they,
Speaker:they're not there just
Speaker:to fog them a product.
Speaker:They actually
Speaker:genuinely care about
Speaker:the information
Speaker:they're passing on.
Speaker:They want that tra that
Speaker:person to be better.
Speaker:I feel guilty
Speaker:every time when I
Speaker:mentioned products
Speaker:in my presentations
Speaker:on my training
Speaker:because I like, no,
Speaker:no, it shouldn't
Speaker:be a sales thing.
Speaker:It should be actually,
Speaker:no, no, I want to
Speaker:share experience
Speaker:and knowledge
Speaker:and not products.
Speaker:Yep.
Speaker:But that, But
Speaker:that is that, that,
Speaker:I have to mention
Speaker:proclamer products,
Speaker:so on a positive,
Speaker:where, where do you
Speaker:see this industry
Speaker:in say, five years?
Speaker:Where do, where do
Speaker:you hope to see this
Speaker:industry in five years?
Speaker:Oh, if this is
Speaker:positive, I'm not sure.
Speaker:So, uh, if you follow
Speaker:the seven star.
Speaker:Uh, line could be
Speaker:quite difficult, um,
Speaker:because seven star
Speaker:is a little bit like
Speaker:playing lottery.
Speaker:You taking certain,
Speaker:certain boxes and
Speaker:they don't have to be
Speaker:related to each other.
Speaker:And yeah, tightness
Speaker:and motion meant
Speaker:management is still not
Speaker:really a part of it.
Speaker:So if you would go
Speaker:more into passive house
Speaker:directions, even if
Speaker:you cut it down, then
Speaker:later on, that's fine.
Speaker:It would be
Speaker:definitely better.
Speaker:The reason is we
Speaker:talk about fashion.
Speaker:Oh, so this bloody
Speaker:morons to always
Speaker:started in the middle
Speaker:of any presentations.
Speaker:We didn't get
Speaker:any warning.
Speaker:So I think I
Speaker:have 20 seconds.
Speaker:So the reason is why
Speaker:I'm so passionate about
Speaker:us because I remember
Speaker:all the damages
Speaker:had been Germany.
Speaker:We, at the moment,
Speaker:right now in
Speaker:Australia, we can
Speaker:jump over 20 years.
Speaker:We take on boards, all
Speaker:the mistake of other
Speaker:countries and step over
Speaker:them because otherwise
Speaker:This is hilarious.
Speaker:hilarious, that, the
Speaker:the funny thing
Speaker:is I think they
Speaker:do it once a month
Speaker:or so, like, yeah,
Speaker:good, good building
Speaker:quality, I guess,
Speaker:just
Speaker:Hey, let's wrap
Speaker:it up there, man.
Speaker:Let's, let's get
Speaker:you back on again.
Speaker:Uh, Dan, thank you
Speaker:just
Speaker:to see you.
Speaker:Matty can't
Speaker:talk.
Speaker:He's just pissed
Speaker:himself laughing.
Speaker:All right.
Speaker:Thanks very much, uh,
Speaker:no,
Speaker:you, Matty.
