Speaker AHere's today's reading reading Luke 19:45 48 from the Message Going into the temple he began to throw out everyone who had set up shop selling everything and anything.
Speaker AAnd he said, it's written in scripture.
Speaker AMy house is a house of prayer.
Speaker AYou have turned it into a religious bazaar.
Speaker AFrom then on, he taught each day in the temple.
Speaker AThe high priests, religion scholars and the leaders of the people were trying their best to find a way to get rid of him.
Speaker ABut with the people hanging on every word he spoke, they couldn't come up with anything.
Speaker AWell, this is a powerful a short but powerful passage of scripture.
Speaker AIn today's reading, this is Jesus dramatic protest in the temple, and it's a powerful statement about the relationship between faith, economics and justice.
Speaker ALet's get into some points to ponder.
Speaker AThe first one is about going beyond individual actions.
Speaker AWhile often called the cleansing of the temple, this wasn't just about purifying the sacred space Jesus was protesting and an entire economic system that profited from people's spiritual needs.
Speaker AToday we might ask, how do modern religious institutions participate in exploitative economics?
Speaker AFrom prosperity gospel to commercialized spirituality, where does faith intersect with profit?
Speaker AThe second point is about prayer versus Prophet Jesus contrasts house of prayer with religious bazaar Prayer here represents authentic connection with God, the divine presence and human community, while the bazaar represents a commodified spirituality.
Speaker AThis challenges us to examine how capitalism has infiltrated our spiritual practices and communities.
Speaker AA third point is about power and resistance.
Speaker ANotice how religious authorities immediately sought to silence Jesus while ordinary people hung on every word.
Speaker AThis pattern continues when faith challenges economic power.
Speaker AInstitutions often resist while marginalized communities Recognize liberating truth.
Speaker AThis speaks to contemporary movements where grassroots spirituality confronts institutional religion.
Speaker AIn your action step, conduct a what we might call a spiritual economics audit.
Speaker AThat is examine your faith communities relationship with money and commerce and where do spiritual practices become commodities?
Speaker AHow might resources be redirected from institutional maintenance to community needs?
Speaker ACreate a specific proposal for one way your community can move from bazaar to prayer.
Speaker APerhaps by converting property to affordable housing or redirecting funds to justice work or making spiritual resources freely available.
Speaker AWe'll come back and have a prayer here in just a minute.
Speaker AJust want to remind you that we do have a great resource for you.

Speaker AHelp us reimagine faith beyond transaction, community beyond consumption, spirituality beyond sales.
Speaker AGive us courage to overturn tables that separate people from authentic connection.
Speaker AWisdom to create spaces of true prayer and strength to face institutional resistance.
Speaker AMay we be people who choose sacred disruption over comfortable commerce.
Speaker AIn determination and hope we pray.
