Well then sit back, crank up the volume, and enjoy this episode of Homeschool Money. Hey, it's Crystal Obby, and I'm Anthony Obby, and we are so excited to talk today about Back to School Balance, homeschooling Tips for Working Parents. One of the big things we find in the Back to School season is everyone is trying to figure out how to get it all done. Especially whenever you are trying to have an amazing school year for your kids, and then you're also trying to do a great job at your work while taking care of yourself and making sure your home is running properly. It can be really exciting as well as overwhelming. And so we are here to make sure that you have the support that you need to make sure that all of your goals, not just your kids' goals and back to school, gets handled in this school year. Yeah, I think, you know. The summertime, you look forward to it, you anticipate it, and then it's here, and then it's like it's gone. And it feels like it's so fast. As homeschoolers, we get to enjoy more, I think of the summertime. Yeah. Because we start school really around Labor Day. That's so that little bit of period before between when the public school and private school kids go back to school. Yeah. And then till Labor Day, we're like really enjoying the shorter lines. Mm-hmm. And the lighter crowds and everything. Yeah. So it's kind of like a little. Fun time that we all celebrate. Yeah, so it does feel better as a homeschooling family, but still it's a discipline to teach yourself. To think about your year in two years, like 20, 25, does not have to just be one year in terms of your goal achievement and how much you're able to accomplish in your business or in your career, or in your personal finances. That's what we talk about here at Homeschool Money. And so it, it doesn't have to be just a matter of just now that it's back to school, that you throw off all of you and forget about your priorities in terms of your personal finances and your, your business, your career. Because that is essential to being able to maintain your homeschool and be able to create financial abundance so that you can have more time to actually devote to homeschooling and homeschooling well. And so at Homeschool Money, we want to talk about this topic of how to balance your, your work career goals, and being able to achieve and receive more, harvest, more income out of your skillset, while at the same time helping your kids get back to homeschooling and achieve their goals and learn the things that they should be learning and continue to grow and develop in the ways that they should grow and develop. For this, for this homeschool season. But if you do it well, and Crystal, you, you're really good at this for our family. Like you've got the kids doing SOPs for everything, and you, you, you have our whole family on a very strict not a very strict, but a really good, I would say, calendar of events and that you keep up to date and you're teaching them how to manage their time. And the kids how to you're teaching the kids how to set goals and how to manage their time really well. So I think that you're gonna be a, a great person to talk about this topic. And you raised this as a topic because you know that it's possible to live two years in one if you plan your time well. Yeah. 'cause you want to go into fall with strategy and expectations. That let you thrive and not end up overwhelmed and burnt out because it's so exciting, you know, whenever all the back to school supplies, you know, get back at the store, you know? Mm-hmm. People like me, I'm like, oh, I can't wait. How many notepads do we need? Yeah. Pens, do we need all, I love it. And all that stuff. And so it's super exciting. And then you have all these new activities and events and just, it's just like all this really amazing excitement and you start signing up for stuff and it's like, oh yeah, we wanna make it. Oh yeah, we wanna make it. And what we know from the years of homeschooling is how you're operating here in the, you know, August and September. It's really gonna dictate how your spring ends up. Mm-hmm. And how you go, how you went through the holidays, and then how you. Feel at the end of the school year next summer. Yeah. And so if you wanna set yourself up for success you know, later, then you wanna make sure to manage your time appropriately right now. And so, 'cause you know, after back to school, we're gonna go right into the holidays. Right. And the holidays are whole, our whole nother beast in themselves. Yeah. So this high that we're on right now for back to school, we're gonna have a little low after, you know, school starts and then it's gonna be ramped back up for the holidays. And so that makes a huge difference. And then after the holidays, you're gonna go into January and that's whenever you need rest. But if you have not made a lot of progress on your personal goals, you can feel really like discouraged. Mm-hmm. Because you're like, well, I got the kids back to school, went through the holidays, but I didn't do what I wanted to do this past year. Right. And so you have to, you start feeling like, well, this is gonna be another year that I can put in on my goals, but so at the same time, you're discouraged 'cause you didn't do something you feel like. You need to put all this extra energy in to the new year, but you're tired. Yeah, because you just came off the holidays. You just came off of back to school after the summer. And so you see this endless cycle every year whenever you have kids and whenever you're homeschool. So that's why it makes a difference of how you're managing it now. And there's this thing called. It's like the, the homeschool slump. Mm-hmm. And it's always in like February. Mm-hmm. And so whenever you've been homeschooling for a while, you find out that you kind of crash in February, like nobody's motivated anymore. Nobody really wants to do anything unless you've maintained your energy. And it all starts from back here. And you know, since my birthday is in February, I want everybody to have lots of energy. So I wanna help people right now start their year off really, really well. And so how you start your school year will really impact your energy and opportunities all year long. So we have eight tips to help you be successful in your work, your home, and your homeschooled. This is exciting. I can't wait to hear. Hey, real quick, if you're liking the show, hit follow so you don't miss a single episode and drop a five star rating and a review to let us know that you're loving the content and tell us what topics you'd like us to cover. This will help more people find the show, and please share this episode with a friend, your co-op, or anyone who needs it. They'll be glad you did. Now, back to the show. So the tip number one is you wanna have a vision, and so that's one of my favorite times. I love whenever we're able to sit down and have a vision meeting. So having a vision, meeting with your spouse, a vision, meeting with your, you know, your kids, and a vision meeting just with yourself. Just sitting down and making sure you know, what do you want this year to look like? And just having some time to really just consider it. Consider what happened last year, consider what your friends are talking about and just consider what's before you and just have a top, an opportunity to really think about where you wanna be this time next year. And so the best thing I like to do is say. You know, do the, the process of the start, stop, and keep. And so it's really simple, it's really clear and it's really effective. And so you just say, what do I wanna start doing? That would be super beneficial. And just one thing, if I did this one thing, if I started doing this one thing, it would get me to where I'm trying to go. And then what do I wanna stop doing? This gives you an opportunity to say, Hey, this didn't work. Maybe it served me in this last season, but it's not gonna serve me in the next season, and I need to stop it. And there always needs to be something that you stop because you need to make room for the new. And so you can't keep adding on commitments and not ever get rid of something because you'll become overwhelmed. And then the next thing is the key. So there may be something that you signed up for last year and it's like, you know what, this was really working. Let's keep doing this. So let's keep doing this as a foundation. Let's start this new opportunity and then let's stop doing this other thing. And that right there is what's gonna help you make sure to get your vision and not be overwhelmed at the end of the school year. Yeah. You have helped us utilize the start, stop, keep method in our. Personal goals and, and not just personal goals, but in all the categories of our lives. You know, I think we've broken down, we've broken it down into like 11 or 12 different areas. It's like between 11 and 13, depending on a year. Yeah. Because we're not having kids anymore, right? Yeah. So no, no more start on that. No more start. That's stop. Stop. First stop. But yeah. So yeah, anywhere between 11 and 12 different aspects of our life. This. That's a lot, right? That 11 to 13 aspects of your life, my goodness. And so the start, stop, keep method has been a way to sort of simplify setting goals and just addressing each of those areas of our life. And you've always utilized that as something, as a, as a framework, as a tool. The, to help us to keep on track with our goals in all of the aspects of our life, whether it be our personal fitness goals, whether it be our, you know, our, our, our spiritual you know, goals and connection with God. Whether it be, you know, our time in nature, our vacations and just fun time and activities and that type of thing. Date night. And all it def most definitely our financial goals and our career goals. And so start, start, keep has been a great tool to utilize. And so seeing yourself breaking your year, your 20, 25 year up into at least two years, we try to do this quarterly, but this is the perfect time. Back to school. Back to homeschool is the perfect time to break that year down into another. See this as a whole new year and a whole new opportunity to, to, to get to where you want to before the end of the year. And you're going to be so much more motivated and energized as you glide into the holiday season. And as you glide into Christmas time and especially the new year, you're gonna feel empowered instead of like a, you know, like a fraud. You're not, you're not gonna feel like that. Going to the, into the new year setting unrealistic goals that you don't even keep past two weeks in 2026, you're gonna feel motivated, energized, and you're gonna have momentum if you take the time now to, as Crystal said, set vision for what you want to achieve. Set your intentions, re gain new clarity. And get before God and gain new clarity for what you want to achieve this year in every aspect of your life, and write something down that you want to achieve, what you wanna start, what you want to stop, and what you want to keep. Yeah. And that takes us right to our number two tip, which is consider the opportunities that come up. And so what we've seen is, especially as homeschooling has become more popular, you know, when we started. There were a lot less opportunities, but it was still way more than, you know, in other areas of the country. But it has really exploded now. So there are so many things that you can do to fill up your schedule, and they all sound amazing. And so if you don't have really good clarity about where you're trying to go, you could sign up. Like for an example, if you sign up for a co-op and it's, you know, we're in, in, you know. In DFW, if you sign up on the other side of DFW for a co-op, you have a lot of drive time and a lot of sitting time. And so that burns a lot of time. You may sometimes want to sign up for a co-op that's on another part of town, but maybe you wanna stack that time stack that trip with some other things, visiting some other friends, doing some other errands. And so if you have your goals in order, you can plan those kind of things. But if you mess around and sign up. For a co-op that's all the way across town. You can end up spending your whole day wasted, just trying to get to a two hour event. And so thinking about the opportunities that you have available and how they align with your goals and how they align with all the other things that you want to do, which you know makes a huge difference, that will let you see what's really an opportunity. 'cause everything that sounds fun, or everything that sounds interesting or helpful may not be an opportunity, and that's why it's so important to really know what. Capacity you have and what opportunities you really are looking for. I absolutely love that framework and I'm, I'm, I'm so glad that you mentioned it. You know, so many times our eyes are bigger than our actual, you know, our actual stomach, you know, just like with eating, you know? But it, it is so true that we want the best for our kids. Mm-hmm. So yeah, we want to sign 'em up for this and for that, but. Some things may just completely be out of the budget and not really make sense financially. You know, I remember just coming from a homeschool conference a few months ago and you know, talking with some folks about a particular activity and yeah. If FOMO kicks in, you know, yeah, I don't want, I don't want my kids to miss out on that. But you already knew about that particular opportunity and you were like. You mentioned the cost of it and also the time that it would take. And you also mentioned the location of it, and it was just like, oh, wow. Shut that door real quick. It right on real quick. Oh. Brought it, brought it all into perspective real fast. I can't wait. You said that because number three. Is decide what trade offs you're willing to make. Mm-hmm. And so, yeah. You got a trade off. Yeah. Yeah. Because I remember what you were talking about because we were talking to that person about this opportunity and it sounds amazing. Yeah. You know, like, oh, we get to our kids, get to do this and that. But then I was like, okay, you wanna trade off? You know, this time you wanna trade off this money, you wanna trade off this attention. Right. You know, we got five kids. Yeah. So that's just one. That's one. That's just one kid. That's one kid. Yeah. So when you line up, what are you willing to trade? You, you say this year your focus is gonna be all about rest and connecting as a family and you know, Sabbath thing and all that. Well, are you willing to trade that off and sign up for all these ACT activities? Yeah. Don't let those squirrels come along and get the best of you. Yep. Or you say, this year, kinda like this year, we have a lot of social, like this is kind of like a fun year for us. We have, you know, it's like making. Making new friends getting out a lot. 'cause you know, you know, the baby's are older now. I can get out and about more. We're gonna meet lots of new people. Mm-hmm. Excited about that. So we have to trade some of that home time. Mm-hmm. You know, so we're gonna be out a little bit more. We're gonna have to learn how to get stuff done in the car. We're gonna have to be okay with a little bit more traffic. Mm-hmm. We will not be able to complain that we maybe have to get up a little earlier, or we have to, you know, eat a little later or something like that. We have to get more organized and to be able to take that opportunity. And so. Everything comes with a trade off. And as long as you know what the trade off is, you can still do everything, you know, still being encouraged, not complaining, and you can take whatever's thrown at you with that. That's right. Count the cost before you. Yes. Count the cost. That's right. Absolutely. Hey, friend, quick break. And so number four is you need to update your operating systems and you need to have an operating system for your work. For your school, for your home, and for yourself. And that's what you were talking about earlier. So this summer we have updated our SOPs, standard operating procedures for how we do a lot of the things in the house, like how we get dinner ready, how we leave the house, how we get ready for bed, how we get up in the morning the, the time blocking that we do. During, out the, the, during the day so that we can make sure that everything gets done, everything ends up where it needs to be, and everybody is on the same page of what the priority is because that has hap By doing that, we eliminate the conversation of, Hey, is the, is the house clean? Mm-hmm. Well, how, how do we know it's clean? Well, the kids made a list of what it takes to get it clean to our standards and be able to turn in and say it's clean. So they listed it out. So all I have to do is say, Hey, is it clean? Checked off, and sign your initial. That says that it's clean and you're gonna approve that. And so if they say, this is the 10 things that need to happen for the house to be clean. And they know exactly what to do, clear expectations. And so that way we are not fussing with the kids, you know? Yeah. We're not, we're not saying, Hey, it's time to go. Is everybody ready to go? Yeah. It, it eliminates all that. Did everybody put on deodorant? Did everybody brush their hair? Did everybody get their shoes? Do you have everything? Yeah. So all these conversations, we, we had a whole meeting. Where we did some pre-thinking and said, Hey, what can we do to make this house run better so we can get seven humans out of here on time? Because we all want to be on time and we all wanna do a lot of things. Guys, I don't know if you noticed this, but Crystal is running this household like a Fortune 500. Okay. She's talking about SOPs for literally how, how we get up in the morning. And just before you get to thinking that, oh man, that sounds too mechanical for me. That sounds like she's a drill sergeant. That sounds extremely boring or anything like that. No, that's the absolute opposite. The, the, let's take the morning routine, for instance. That's an opportunity for you to inject happiness, for you to inject joy, for you to set everybody off on the right foot and for you to really. Cultivate the sort of children shape, the, the way that children see getting up and shape the way that they see morning time. You can really shape that to be a wonderful time. And I just, Chris, I just love what, absolutely love what you have done with the morning routine and then getting up in the morning. SOP. Because you have injected, okay, everybody wake up and then number two have dance party, right? Yep. So she, you got the playlist, she's got a playlist, a wake up playlist. Wake up playlist. She's got Forrest Frank. I'm gonna have a good day. Yeah. In there and some other great songs that you wanna wake up to. And that set everybody off in a good mood. And every time this particular song comes on, the whole family does a does dance moves to it that everybody knows. And that's how you have the kids waking up in the morning. And that is wonderful. That's beautiful. And that, that, that shapes their childhood. It shapes how they're going to see waking up in the morning as they get older. It's not gonna be a drag, it's not gonna be like. Oh, mom, I can't stand you, mom. It's not, you know, it's not any of that. It's gonna be, I'm gonna have a good day. Yeah. This is great. Yeah. And so I really love what you've done with that. And so that's what you could do with SOPs. Standard operating procedures is you can inject joy and happiness and the create shape, the kind of culture and the kind of childhood that you want for your homeschool children. And that's what you get an opportunity to do as a homeschooling parent. So seize that moment. Yeah. 'cause like, like when we go to bed mm-hmm. The kids said they like having about 20 minutes to read before they go to bed. Mm-hmm. They also like to spend about five minutes writing quickly in their journal. Yeah. So it's like, okay, so y'all need 25 minutes for that. You also need to brush your teeth and all that. So you just work backwards. Yeah. So whenever you say, Hey, it's time to go to bed. We start, we say bedtime starts whenever it's the bedtime routine. Mm-hmm. So that way they have everything that they wanted. And it's not like, Hey, hurry up and get to bed, or, Hey, turn off the lights and things like that. We talk about what we want the day to look like. Yeah. Like what it, what does it take to have a nice lunch together? What does it take to go to bed peacefully and, and what does it take to have a, a morning that makes the day fun? And so we in, you know, install all those things into our schedule so they're expected. And so it's just a lot more fun. Yeah. But it's also very organized so that everybody feels successful starting off in the day. Yeah. And so I, it is just really fun for me. And so that's some, that's some high level parenting. Yeah. Alright, that's cool. Step number five is plan for margin. And so one thing I noticed with a lot of parents is we get back to, into the back to school and it's like, okay, we have this new curriculum, we have this new. Schedule. We have all these new activities, but we forget that Christmas is coming and Thanksgiving is coming, or you know, the flu is coming. All these different things, and you have to remember there. You're not gonna be able to achieve all the same amount of things when it comes to Christmas time. You're, you're gonna have to take some time off and everybody else that you're working with, everything's gonna slow down. And so you need to plan for that. And you need to have the expectation set to where you know, when you can run hard and, and whenever you're gonna have to be like at half speed on achieving things, especially like if you have multiple kids. And then what happens if there's a sick day? What happens if you need to take some time off and be able to. Just have a little bit of margin. Mm-hmm. So you just need to plan for that. Okay. And not be over ambitious. Yeah. In in the goal setting Yeah. And everything. Yeah. And so number six is remember that balance is not about equal attention, it's about appropriate attention. Mm-hmm. And so, yeah. Big thing is like, especially when you, when you work Yeah. You have that guilt. So you have the mom guilt or the, the, the dad guilt. So whenever, what that means is whenever you're working, you feel like you really should be with the kids. And then whenever you're with the kids, you feel like you should be working. 'cause you're like, well I need this money to be able to take care of the kids. And you're like, I should. And you know how the kids are when you're trying to work. They come in, they wanna show you everything, especially whenever you work from home. And so you don't want, you wanna have an open door, but it kind of needs to be closed sometime. Mm-hmm. And so it's like balancing that. And so whenever you know, Hey, I need this much time to get this work done so this family can be supported. Then everybody can be on the same page about that and they can, the kids can work with you to protect that time because they know, hey, this is part of what this family needs in order to make it. Yeah. And so, but whenever you're with the kids, if you're fully present with them, then they know that you, they have your full heart and their attention, and so they can go on ahead and everybody can be, you know, doing what they need to do. And it doesn't have to be. Well, I need to spend five hours with the kids and five hours working. Mm-hmm. It's not about that. It's just about what is appropriate that your 3-year-old needs. Mm-hmm. What does your 13-year-old need and what does your work need? And so you need to just make sure that you know what is necessary for each priority in your life. Taking time for yourself, making sure your home is running properly, making sure your work is being taken care of, and making sure the kids have what they need as far as parenting, as well as their education. If you know what's necessary and you plan for it, and you schedule it in, you'll get everything that you need done. And then number seven is you need to decide that this is the season that will be great, and you'll give a hundred percent to the task that's in front of you and all of your ever efforts work together to create the beautiful life that you want. So it's not like, well, whenever I'm educating the kids, that's whenever I'm doing a great thing. Well, you know, whenever you're washing the dishes or. Cleaning the house, doing the laundry, that's also part of it. Mm. Or whenever you're working, you're not just trying to just homeschool or just manage your home or just take care of yourself. You're, you also do need to work and you have to work in order to be able to have all those other things. And so you have to be intentional in every area. And by being intentional in every area, you end up with a beautiful life. Hey, I hope you're enjoying the show. We'll get right back to the discussion, but I do want to talk high level with you real quick. And the, the, whenever you set your goals for all these aspects of your life, the 11, 12, 13, or whatever it is for you, different aspects of your life that really does address, that's you giving yourself an opportunity to have permission to give attention to these different aspects of your life. Whenever you only prioritize homeschooling or, which is very important, right? That's a, an extension of your parenting is, and it's important for your children to have an education when you only prioritize work or, or just only address two aspects of your life. Well, there's all these other things that you feel guilty about, these other things that you feel neglectful about that relate to you, but you don't, you don't feel like a complete or like a whole human being. And so. By by, by addressing all of the aspects of your life that are important to you at this particular season of your life, that is giving you the permission to feel good and to feel present and in the moment with whatever you're doing, whether it be something as menial as washing dishes or folding clothes. Mm-hmm. I think that's exactly the word I was thinking about is. The permission. Mm. Yeah. Because people want, you know, you need permission to say, whenever I'm working, I am doing what's best for my family. Whenever I'm homeschooling, I'm doing what's best for my family. Yeah. And there's not anything that's better than the other. Right. But they, but they all need to be tended to, and that's why the step number eight is we want you to remember that you're not alone.
