When Faith Communities Disagree A reflection on Acts 15:36 41 on the Daily Bible refresh with Dr.
Speaker ABrad Miller hello good people.
Speaker AWelcome to Daily Bible Refresh with Dr.
Speaker ABrad Miller.
Speaker AThis is the place to come.
Speaker AEvery single day to come.
Speaker AYou get a daily reading of the New Testament which comes from the Revised Common Lectionary.
Speaker AThat's the biblical selections for each and every day on a three year cycle.
Speaker AWe're in year C right now, the Easter season.
Speaker AWe do in such a way that we make it understandable by reading from the New Testament, the message version relatable, giving you three points to ponder and applicable giving you an action step to take.
Speaker AWe have a prayer, we do all of that in under 10 minutes or so.
Speaker AIt's all brought to you by voiceofgoddaily.com that's our where you get all of these episodes and where you can also pick up our resource which is the ABC123 Bible study method.
Speaker ALet's get into the reading for today from Acts 15:36 41 after a few days of this, Paul said to Barnabas, let's go back and visit all our friends in each of the towns where we preach the word of God.
Speaker ALet's see how we're doing.
Speaker ABarnabas wanted to take John along, the John nicknamed Mark, but Paul wouldn't have him.
Speaker AHe wasn't about to take along a quitter who as soon as the going got tough, had jumped ship on them and Pamphylia.
Speaker ATempers flared and they ended up going their separate ways.
Speaker ABarnabas took Mark and sailed for Cyprus.
Speaker APaul chose Silas and offered up by their friends to the grace of the Master, went to Syria and Cecilia to put grit into those congregations.
Speaker AWell, in today's episode or today's reading, we really have a situation where we have these different views of what it meant to be a follower of Christ and different therefore different faith communities which disagreed.
Speaker AAnd this is a remarkably honest account of conflict between some of the early, most powerful church leaders.
Speaker AAnd I really think it offers some profound insights that we can learn from today in our modern faith communities.
Speaker AHere are some points to ponder.
Speaker AOne is the value of honest conflict.
Speaker AThe passage doesn't hide the disagreement between Paul and Barnabas.
Speaker AIt names them directly.
Speaker AIn progressive faith spaces we often emphasize harmony so much that we avoid necessary conflict.
Speaker AYet here we see that even spiritual leaders can have flared tempers is what it says here, and serious disagreements.
Speaker AThis transparency invites us to embrace healthy conflict as a part of community growth.
Speaker AA second point to ponder is different approaches to grace.
Speaker ABarnabas whose name actually means son of encouragement, advocates for giving Mark another chance, and Paul prioritizes the mission's reliability.
Speaker ANeither is villainized by the text.
Speaker AThis shows us that even within progressive movements, we can have valid but different approaches to inclusion and accountability.
Speaker ASometimes the answer isn't about what's right or who's right, but about acknowledging that different approaches can serve different needs.
Speaker AOne more point.
Speaker AIt's about productive separation rather than forcing false unity.
Speaker APaul and Barnabas choose to work separately.
Speaker AThis challenges our assumption that means unity means doing everything together.
Speaker ASometimes justice work is better served by allowing different approaches to flourish independently.
Speaker AThe text shows both leaders continually valuable ministry in their own ways.
Speaker AHere's your action step for today.
Speaker AReflect on a conflict within your own faith community or some other group you're a part of, or circle.
Speaker AInstead of rushing to resolve it or picking sides, ask can this conflict be revealing different but equally valuable approaches to the mission?
Speaker AAnd you might want to write that down or record or journal in some way.
Speaker ALessons learned or what might be gained by allowing space for different methods rather than forcing consensus?
Speaker AConsidering having a conversation with someone you may have disagreed with and not to change their mind or to concede to their way, but to better understand their perspective.
Speaker AListen and learn we'll have a closing prayer here in just a minute, but I did want to remind you that we do have a Bible study resource for you that should be helpful to you and your daily Bible study.
Speaker AIt's called the ABC1, 23 Bible Study Method.
