Speaker A

Brad Miller hello good people.

Speaker A

Welcome to Daily Bible Refresh with Dr.

Speaker A

Brad Miller.

Speaker A

This is the place to come.

Speaker A

Every single day to come.

Speaker A

You get a daily reading of the New Testament which comes from the Revised Common Lectionary.

Speaker A

That's the biblical selections for each and every day on a three year cycle.

Speaker A

We're in year C right now, the Easter season.

Speaker A

We do in such a way that we make it understandable by reading from the New Testament, the message version relatable, giving you three points to ponder and applicable giving you an action step to take.

Speaker A

We have a prayer, we do all of that in under 10 minutes or so.

Speaker A

It's all brought to you by voiceofgoddaily.com that's our where you get all of these episodes and where you can also pick up our resource which is the ABC123 Bible study method.

Speaker A

Let's get into the reading for today from Acts 15:36 41 after a few days of this, Paul said to Barnabas, let's go back and visit all our friends in each of the towns where we preach the word of God.

Speaker A

Let's see how we're doing.

Speaker A

Barnabas wanted to take John along, the John nicknamed Mark, but Paul wouldn't have him.

Speaker A

He wasn't about to take along a quitter who as soon as the going got tough, had jumped ship on them and Pamphylia.

Speaker A

Tempers flared and they ended up going their separate ways.

Speaker A

Barnabas took Mark and sailed for Cyprus.

Speaker A

Paul chose Silas and offered up by their friends to the grace of the Master, went to Syria and Cecilia to put grit into those congregations.

Speaker A

Well, in today's episode or today's reading, we really have a situation where we have these different views of what it meant to be a follower of Christ and different therefore different faith communities which disagreed.

Speaker A

And this is a remarkably honest account of conflict between some of the early, most powerful church leaders.

Speaker A

And I really think it offers some profound insights that we can learn from today in our modern faith communities.

Speaker A

Here are some points to ponder.

Speaker A

One is the value of honest conflict.

Speaker A

The passage doesn't hide the disagreement between Paul and Barnabas.

Speaker A

It names them directly.

Speaker A

In progressive faith spaces we often emphasize harmony so much that we avoid necessary conflict.

Speaker A

Yet here we see that even spiritual leaders can have flared tempers is what it says here, and serious disagreements.

Speaker A

This transparency invites us to embrace healthy conflict as a part of community growth.

Speaker A

A second point to ponder is different approaches to grace.

Speaker A

Barnabas whose name actually means son of encouragement, advocates for giving Mark another chance, and Paul prioritizes the mission's reliability.

Speaker A

Neither is villainized by the text.

Speaker A

This shows us that even within progressive movements, we can have valid but different approaches to inclusion and accountability.

Speaker A

Sometimes the answer isn't about what's right or who's right, but about acknowledging that different approaches can serve different needs.

Speaker A

One more point.

Speaker A

It's about productive separation rather than forcing false unity.

Speaker A

Paul and Barnabas choose to work separately.

Speaker A

This challenges our assumption that means unity means doing everything together.

Speaker A

Sometimes justice work is better served by allowing different approaches to flourish independently.

Speaker A

The text shows both leaders continually valuable ministry in their own ways.

Speaker A

Here's your action step for today.

Speaker A

Reflect on a conflict within your own faith community or some other group you're a part of, or circle.

Speaker A

Instead of rushing to resolve it or picking sides, ask can this conflict be revealing different but equally valuable approaches to the mission?

Speaker A

And you might want to write that down or record or journal in some way.

Speaker A

Lessons learned or what might be gained by allowing space for different methods rather than forcing consensus?

Speaker A

Considering having a conversation with someone you may have disagreed with and not to change their mind or to concede to their way, but to better understand their perspective.

Speaker A

Listen and learn we'll have a closing prayer here in just a minute, but I did want to remind you that we do have a Bible study resource for you that should be helpful to you and your daily Bible study.

Speaker A

It's called the ABC1, 23 Bible Study Method.

Speaker A

You pick it up at our website voiceofgod daily.com it will help you with your personal Bible study.

Speaker A

Let's get to our prayer for the day.

Speaker A

God, you are a divine source of wisdom.

Speaker A

Help us to navigate the complicated waters of community conflict.

Speaker A

Give us courage to be honest about our disagreements and wisdom to know when to hold together and when to create space.

Speaker A

When tempers flare, remind us that different paths can lead to justice and love.

Speaker A

Help us release the need to always be right and embrace the possibility that our differences might actually actually serve your larger purpose.

Speaker A

Guide us in building communities that can hold both unity and diversity, both accountability and grace.

Speaker A

In the spirit of honest love.

Speaker A

Amen.

Speaker A

And in the spirit of understanding and reflecting on scriptures.
