Speaker:

>> Jonathan: Bonus week here on chasing birdies. These guys tuning in

Speaker:

today. We appreciate it very much. And, we got an

Speaker:

episode filling in this weekend on Thursday. Not our typical

Speaker:

week, but we're happy to be here with you all

Speaker:

listening today. And pep, my man. It's like I haven't seen

Speaker:

you forever. I'm being sarcastic. I'm being

Speaker:

fucking sarcastic.

Speaker:

>> RB: You're being very sarcastic.

Speaker:

>> Jonathan: Yes, I am.

Speaker:

>> RB: I feel like we're seeing each other more and more.

Speaker:

>> Jonathan: It's insane.

Speaker:

>> RB: Dude, what's that hoodie you got on?

Speaker:

>> Jonathan: pronghorn. Hank Ashworth,

Speaker:

yardage company speaking, of hoodies, dude,

Speaker:

freaking frost is lighten it up

Speaker:

nowadays. I mean, as we inch closer.

Speaker:

>> RB: Uh-huh.

Speaker:

>> Jonathan: To winter.

Speaker:

>> RB: Yeah. And as always, I mean.

Speaker:

Today's episode is brought to you by redvamily. Make sure you go

Speaker:

to redvamily.com. our boys,

Speaker:

Jim, Dan, Andrew

Speaker:

hooked us up and, for the fall,

Speaker:

man. And I'm feeling good. I'm feeling good. I'm

Speaker:

looking good. Corduroy pants.

Speaker:

The pool ons, like you mentioned in the last episode,

Speaker:

my hands on, on a pair of those, they're like sweatpants, which is a little

Speaker:

scary. So I'll be wearing those to bed. I'll be wearing corduroy

Speaker:

pants to bed, boys. some new, fresh hoodies they sent

Speaker:

and some, of course, some of the new polos. So we're

Speaker:

dialed in for the fall and, our January

Speaker:

golf trip.

Speaker:

>> Jonathan: So we're dowed in, buddy. We're dowding,

Speaker:

and we're inching closer to the end

Speaker:

of golf season. But as always here,

Speaker:

with it being football season, we'd like to recap a little bit

Speaker:

here.

Speaker:

>> RB: And, a lot's changed since last Saturday, bud.

Speaker:

>> Jonathan: Yeah, it's been. There was a fun weekend of watching.

Speaker:

>> RB: Football two Saturdays ago, I guess, when we had

Speaker:

success.

Speaker:

>> Jonathan: Yeah. Correct. College football, NFL, the full

Speaker:

slate. Hockey's back in the mix. But, it was not

Speaker:

that great of a weekend until, let's

Speaker:

just call it the fourth quarter on Sunday when the 04:00

Speaker:

games ended. But for you and I on

Speaker:

Saturday, it was just not. It wasn't great.

Speaker:

I was surprised. Ohio State and Oregon. I

Speaker:

really thought. I don't. I'm not a Buckeyes fan, but I just

Speaker:

thought that game would have been a little bit more out of reach for Oregon,

Speaker:

per se. But how is that?

Speaker:

>> RB: They're talking about the play that that coach did. He

Speaker:

took the five yard penalty with throwing a, 12th man

Speaker:

on. I mean, that's. That's some

Speaker:

huh? You gotta know your

Speaker:

stuff.

Speaker:

>> Jonathan: And here's an interesting one. Army and Navy are both

Speaker:

ranked inside the top 25 headed into this weekend. That's the first

Speaker:

time they've together been ranked since

Speaker:

1960.

Speaker:

>> RB: And Pitt went 60.

Speaker:

>> Jonathan: Pitt, 60.

Speaker:

>> RB: And then you went to the Mountaineers game on

Speaker:

Saturday. A little tough go for the boys.

Speaker:

It was tough to watch and. But, I'll tell you what, they

Speaker:

look pretty fresh in those unis.

Speaker:

>> Jonathan: The black coal rush unis were looking good.

Speaker:

>> RB: And did you see the coal miners walking into the game? Yeah, I had

Speaker:

the, I had the laugh because they were all walking up, like, where the

Speaker:

players walk up and there was not one coal

Speaker:

miner didn't have a Michelob ultra in his hand.

Speaker:

>> Jonathan: Yeah, that or bud light. I know. It

Speaker:

was, it was electric. The environment was great. But, the outcome

Speaker:

was awful. And it's tough,

Speaker:

dude. So basically, now it's, it's,

Speaker:

you got three losses. Yeah, there's not much to say

Speaker:

about it. There's really nothing to talk about in that regard with West Virginia

Speaker:

football.

Speaker:

>> RB: Yeah, Saturday was a debacle for us. I mean,

Speaker:

you might as well have closed our eyes and picked games, which, we

Speaker:

might start doing. Sunday, though. you

Speaker:

know, I fell asleep for the 04:00 games. I took a little cat

Speaker:

nap at 345, missed the games to put my. I.

Speaker:

But you had a nice little run and then the Steelers

Speaker:

got back on track.

Speaker:

>> Jonathan: Yeah, but did they really?

Speaker:

>> RB: Did they really? Because, you know, like, you can't, Oakland

Speaker:

sucks, dude.

Speaker:

>> Jonathan: I mean, well, first off, it's Vegas, but anyways, yes, to

Speaker:

your point. Yeah, but, it's

Speaker:

not, it wasn't a

Speaker:

dominating win. Granted. they

Speaker:

won, but it's still funny. I was thinking when they

Speaker:

recovered that fumble, like, down on the

Speaker:

goal line, nine yard line, I'm like, well,

Speaker:

there's probably a great chance here they're just going to settle for a field

Speaker:

goal. I mean, there, it's first and goal from the nine. And, you

Speaker:

know, right then and there when you're, when you're watching that game,

Speaker:

that there's a 10% chance they score a touchdown

Speaker:

here. And they didn't, they kicked the field goal.

Speaker:

So that won't fly against the

Speaker:

Baltimore Ravens in our division. That won't

Speaker:

fly against playing the chiefs of later on in

Speaker:

the year. So there's. Other than the win, which

Speaker:

a win's a win. It wasn't in impressive

Speaker:

fashion, I'll tell you.

Speaker:

>> RB: I'll tell you this much. I think they

Speaker:

had three delay a game

Speaker:

penalties on their

Speaker:

offense. That is

Speaker:

pure. And I'm not that big of a f. I don't know that

Speaker:

much about football, but that is pure being

Speaker:

unprepared.

Speaker:

>> Jonathan: Oh, yeah. Yeah. They look aloof. There's

Speaker:

no two ways about it. but Detroit

Speaker:

absolutely waxed Dallas.

Speaker:

>> RB: Did you see Hutchinson's?

Speaker:

>> Jonathan: I didn't see it. I saw it.

Speaker:

>> RB: I watched it. I watched it.

Speaker:

I might reach out to him and give him a few pointers on some pointers,

Speaker:

what to do and how to get through it.

Speaker:

>> Jonathan: Boys, that was a game I was sitting, looking at and

Speaker:

going, okay, Dallas at home, plus three and a half.

Speaker:

I mean, I was like, I need. I think. I think

Speaker:

Dallas, you know, but I went against what I

Speaker:

thought, which is probably good, and that's why I chose

Speaker:

Detroit. Get on the right side of the coin flip there.

Speaker:

But I would have been so mad had I really

Speaker:

actually taken Dallas, because they looked like they were

Speaker:

asleep. I watched that game, too. They

Speaker:

looked like they were just sleeping out there.

Speaker:

But Sunday was all

Speaker:

about fun. We got to play a little g up at

Speaker:

Nemekolan. I tell you what, dude, the wind

Speaker:

was. It was blowing 35,

Speaker:

40. you played pretty good. I did not play

Speaker:

pretty good, but, you know,

Speaker:

I still feel like, yeah, fall

Speaker:

golf is where it's at.

Speaker:

>> RB: I'll tell you, it was. Even though it was gusting, it was a

Speaker:

beautiful day. had some friends of

Speaker:

yours, play with us, and that was fun,

Speaker:

to. To meet them and. Yeah,

Speaker:

I mean, if the wind was 15 miles an hour, it would have

Speaker:

been a ten out of ten day. Now it

Speaker:

was an eight out of ten day because of it. I mean, your hat,

Speaker:

but I almost threw that thing in the lake.

Speaker:

>> Jonathan: Yeah.

Speaker:

>> RB: I'm not exaggerating. That thing fell off four times because of the

Speaker:

wind in the first five holes. Yeah, put the old ponytail

Speaker:

in.

Speaker:

>> Jonathan: Yeah, put the ponytail high. Pony, pulled it through the back of the

Speaker:

cap, and we were good to go. But, yeah, it was

Speaker:

fun overall weekend. We're getting ready to kick it off again this

Speaker:

weekend here, guys. But before we do so,

Speaker:

let's get into the important aspect of today, aside from pep

Speaker:

and I just talking. It's our guest today, Brian Mitchell,

Speaker:

former Washington Redskin

Speaker:

commanders, whatever you still want to call them,

Speaker:

NFL player, but involved in a lot of charitable work

Speaker:

right now, especially on the aspect of

Speaker:

motivational speaking, working as a broadcaster,

Speaker:

empowering women in

Speaker:

businesses, and has been

Speaker:

involved in a plethora of golf tournaments. And as

Speaker:

you listen, you understand he is frankly, a

Speaker:

golf addict. He's played pretty much a lot of the spots

Speaker:

around here, places across the country, but,

Speaker:

I think he got called in as a QB back in the

Speaker:

day in what was called the body bag game. I read

Speaker:

that fact about him because he was like the third QB

Speaker:

emergency quarterback at that time. Set two NFL

Speaker:

records with kick return punt returns.

Speaker:

>> RB: He still has uncle, doesn't. He?

Speaker:

>> Jonathan: Has him. Yeah. Yeah.

Speaker:

>> RB: So that's kind of nice.

Speaker:

>> Jonathan: So let's go on and get this thing kicking

Speaker:

here with Brian Mitchell here

Speaker:

on chasing birdies.

Speaker:

All right, you guys out there tuning in today to chase and

Speaker:

birdies, we are joined by a special guest, Brian

Speaker:

Mitchell, former NFL running back and now

Speaker:

doing a lot of charitable work in his life and

Speaker:

endeavors and whatnot. So he's chasing birdies in life. Brian,

Speaker:

be Mitch, as James said, great to have you on the show, and thanks

Speaker:

for joining us.

Speaker:

>> Brian Mitchell: I appreciate it. Thanks for having me on.

Speaker:

>> Jonathan: Well, I gotta say something quickly here. Cause you took your hat off. You had

Speaker:

the commander's hat on.

Speaker:

>> Brian Mitchell: Oh, yeah.

Speaker:

>> Jonathan: You know, and I know that's where you kind of played and whatnot, but,

Speaker:

the boys are looking good this year.

Speaker:

>> Brian Mitchell: They are. They are. You know, and I expected

Speaker:

this team to come out and set a great foundation. I didn't. I did

Speaker:

not expect them to be playing so well so soon,

Speaker:

but, I will accept it. Cause I've cheered a lot of years where they

Speaker:

were very good. And right now it seems to be this

Speaker:

coaching staff have these guys working, and jaden daniels

Speaker:

is playing unbelievable. As a rookie quarterback, he draws

Speaker:

some amazing things.

Speaker:

>> RB: It's fun to watch because, you know, I would put like, we're

Speaker:

in Pittsburgh, so we're Steelers fans, and, we've

Speaker:

had some success. We have a. We've had a lot more success

Speaker:

than negative things go on

Speaker:

in Pittsburgh Steelers organization. But you look at, like, the

Speaker:

Cleveland Browns, the washington, I guess, the redskins, or the

Speaker:

commanders. so whenever you have these kind of

Speaker:

successes, it's fun to watch. And this jaden daniels, like you

Speaker:

mentioned, man, it's, it's a blast. I'm not

Speaker:

a fan of, of the commanders, but it's a blast to watch.

Speaker:

It.

Speaker:

>> Brian Mitchell: It is. You know, and me, I'm 56 years old

Speaker:

now, and, I laugh when I call kids. I call

Speaker:

the guys on the team kids, you know, in their twenties and

Speaker:

thirties and things like that. But ultimately, I

Speaker:

got here as a, 21, 22 year old

Speaker:

and played with some unbelievable guys, you know, Daryl Green and

Speaker:

Art monk. And you know, Ernest Byron, guys like

Speaker:

that, you know, I I know what

Speaker:

success is in this area. We won the Super bowl,

Speaker:

you know, saying, and I know fans

Speaker:

are, and it's been since 1992, they

Speaker:

haven't been to something like that and consistently going to the

Speaker:

playoff that hadn't had or, hadn't happened either. So just

Speaker:

see him playing well and seeing this, you could,

Speaker:

you see him like they just, they want to erupt, but

Speaker:

a lot of people are still, you know, they are, got

Speaker:

PTSD. They worried about the last 20 plus

Speaker:

years and, but, but ultimately, when

Speaker:

you get guys like Jayden Daniels on your team, you get guys like a

Speaker:

Frankie Louvre on your team or Austin Eckler, you

Speaker:

know, and Bobby Wagner. Those guys

Speaker:

that, they, they just work, you know,

Speaker:

they understand if I put in work, something may come at the

Speaker:

end. They're not thinking about what's going to come at the end. They

Speaker:

go do what they need to do right now. And I always tell people, I read

Speaker:

this book called the president, if I'm a worrying about yesterday or

Speaker:

tomorrow, I will not be interested on doing what I need to do

Speaker:

today to make sure I don't live the same things I

Speaker:

did the past. I think that's exactly what those guys do.

Speaker:

And, I'm happy, you know, it makes me feel good

Speaker:

to now be able to go around. When somebody says something about the commanders,

Speaker:

I can speak up instead of cowering to the side because it

Speaker:

wasn't doing very well.

Speaker:

>> RB: So let me, let me ask you, because, again,

Speaker:

you just said the kids, and they're not kids, but

Speaker:

I'm going to call you an old timer. You're not really an old timer, but

Speaker:

I'm going to call you an old timer. So, as an old

Speaker:

timer. And, you know, we got some stuff

Speaker:

going on in Pittsburgh right now with the wide receiver

Speaker:

and Pickens. I don't think that kind of stuff would fly back in

Speaker:

the day with a lot of you guys, right? Because it wasn't about me,

Speaker:

me. It was about

Speaker:

us as a team. How did you guys handle those

Speaker:

personalities, if there were even those personalities back in the day?

Speaker:

>> Brian Mitchell: Well, they had personalities back in the day. You know, listen, man,

Speaker:

they had a lot of guys on the washington Redskins at the time

Speaker:

that were those type of guys. But, you know, the

Speaker:

veteran guys basically ran the football team. And I

Speaker:

think, in pittsburgh, you got a coach who

Speaker:

doesn't take much b's. And I think the

Speaker:

ultimate thing today is that, you know,

Speaker:

people are so concerned with the

Speaker:

stars and you know, how much

Speaker:

money they're paying people. I think ownership

Speaker:

messes up football today

Speaker:

because back in the day, you, when the coach got

Speaker:

you, that was the final say, you know what I

Speaker:

mean? And your job is to play football today.

Speaker:

I think guys care more about other stuff than they do playing

Speaker:

football. And, you know, we

Speaker:

call it the kangaroo court. If

Speaker:

you got online, the veteran guys got you in

Speaker:

line. And I quickly realized that with the guys,

Speaker:

and I became one of those type guys in my 3rd, 4th

Speaker:

year, because when you become a leader of the team,

Speaker:

they want you to help lead the team. You know,

Speaker:

a lot of coaches today are afraid to let players lead the

Speaker:

team because coaches are so worried about getting the

Speaker:

credit for everything. And.

Speaker:

>> RB: Yeah, you know, with college nowadays,

Speaker:

I think these, these guys are so focused on

Speaker:

their brand instead

Speaker:

of, you know, actually focusing on.

Speaker:

On the football. And I think that's, that's what has a lot to do with it as

Speaker:

well, because they're so concerned about their brand. Yeah.

Speaker:

Somebody in Pittsburgh, I was. I, left town today

Speaker:

and I was listening to radio and they were talking about Pickens and

Speaker:

would this fly when James Ferrier,

Speaker:

Casey Hampton, Jerome Bettis, Ben

Speaker:

Roethlisberger, Hines Ward, the names go

Speaker:

on. Would this last in there?

Speaker:

>> Brian Mitchell: And they say, kevin Green, I take you farther back.

Speaker:

>> RB: They said James Harrison would just need one afternoon with this guy and

Speaker:

he would never act like that again.

Speaker:

>> Brian Mitchell: But, you know, a lot of receivers, that's their

Speaker:

mindset. And I think when, when the

Speaker:

guy can be like, Gary Clark was fiery,

Speaker:

but Gary Clark was always a team player. Some of

Speaker:

these guys get fiery and they get a little selfish.

Speaker:

you know, you all dealt with it with, abb.

Speaker:

Yeah. Antonio Brown. He was. He started

Speaker:

off all world, it seemed, about the team, and then all of a

Speaker:

sudden, he just flipped and became like, it's about him.

Speaker:

But the thing, I was a quarterback in high school, in college, and I

Speaker:

understand I was nothing without the rest

Speaker:

of the guys on my offense, my officer line on block, I don't have

Speaker:

much time. My receivers don't catch. I'm throwing the ball

Speaker:

to the ground. And if I didn't have guys running backs

Speaker:

being able to do their job, to take pressure off me, it was

Speaker:

nothing. And then I get to the league and I'm a return man.

Speaker:

I needed them to help me. And I think once you

Speaker:

think like that and you give credit to those guys,

Speaker:

they'll go to the end of the world for you. And a lot of

Speaker:

guys don't understand that.

Speaker:

>> RB: I always say, were you a punt returner or kickoff?

Speaker:

>> Brian Mitchell: Me? I was. I was a football player. I did both of them, though.

Speaker:

>> RB: You did? I gotta be honest, I like,

Speaker:

I'd be so scared on a punt return, you're

Speaker:

looking straight up in the air and

Speaker:

this ball's coming in there. The defenders are coming at you a million

Speaker:

miles an hour, boys, but they.

Speaker:

>> Brian Mitchell: Can'T hit me until I catch the ball.

Speaker:

And once I catch the ball and I see them, they gotta worry about me more than

Speaker:

I gotta worry about.

Speaker:

>> Jonathan: No, that's. It is true, though. I mean,

Speaker:

just, you know, in our era right now, with what

Speaker:

you mentioned earlier about how these

Speaker:

guys aren't totally

Speaker:

focused on what they're doing. This is their career, this is

Speaker:

their livelihood, this is their job at the end of the day,

Speaker:

and they kind of make it out like, you know, and I get it. They

Speaker:

are celebrity. They have celebrity status to a degree, but,

Speaker:

yeah, Juju Smith Schuster, several years ago, I mean, he was worried

Speaker:

about his TikTok channel and playing video games and all that

Speaker:

jazz, and it's like, brother, man, let's just play some football,

Speaker:

man.

Speaker:

>> Brian Mitchell: You know, it hasn't changed. You know, it's still

Speaker:

about putting in work, working hard.

Speaker:

Like, I remember 19,

Speaker:

91, we on our Super bowl run,

Speaker:

and Monty Coleman stated, he said, listen, man, this is the

Speaker:

time you got to sacrifice. He say, do

Speaker:

everything you can just for the team. You win this

Speaker:

game, you'll live on this the rest of your life.

Speaker:

That was 1991. It is

Speaker:

2024. People

Speaker:

still treat me well and discuss

Speaker:

that game winning that season. Many people

Speaker:

believe the best Super bowl team ever

Speaker:

because we all focused on that. We cared about each other.

Speaker:

I think guys don't understand, and in this day and age, let's be

Speaker:

real, a lot of players in the league, they make

Speaker:

money just because they make money. They think they've

Speaker:

arrived just like, you know, all these people that, oh, I got

Speaker:

a million followers, 999,000 of them don't like

Speaker:

you, so who cares? You know, the ultimate thing

Speaker:

is still, you gotta be out there working for the

Speaker:

team. This is a team sport. It's not an individual sport, you

Speaker:

know, and Jayden Daniels, a young guy on his team, this

Speaker:

guy is coming in four something in the morning. When you

Speaker:

see a rookie doing something like that and your star

Speaker:

quarterback, second round, second pick of the first

Speaker:

round, when that guy does the rest of the guys fall in

Speaker:

line.

Speaker:

>> RB: I saw that about him getting in there at 04:00 a.m. does,

Speaker:

his film, it does his stretches before anybody gets there.

Speaker:

>> Jonathan: Yeah, that's when the work gets put in. Have you had any,

Speaker:

any interactions with him?

Speaker:

>> Brian Mitchell: Yes. I mean, and listen

Speaker:

straight down the earth, you know, has no ego

Speaker:

or no qualms about all the guy wants to do is play football and win.

Speaker:

>> Jonathan: That's right.

Speaker:

>> Brian Mitchell: I saw a quote where he said, I don't talk trash, I just smile and

Speaker:

laugh. If you watch him, he's always smiling, laughing.

Speaker:

And what happens with that? You see him playing, he's

Speaker:

enjoying himself as a teammate. You want to enjoy

Speaker:

yourself as a fan. You begin to like him and you want to enjoy,

Speaker:

you want, you want him to do well. That's the same way I

Speaker:

feel. My best friend lives in Louisiana, where I'm

Speaker:

from. He's like, man, when this guy, Jaden

Speaker:

Davis get up there, you're going to be, you're going to be impressed.

Speaker:

And everything he's told me, I've been more

Speaker:

than impressed, even more than what he said, because the kid just

Speaker:

wants to play ball, wants to go out there and be

Speaker:

great. And many people want to be great, but they don't want to put the

Speaker:

work in to be there.

Speaker:

>> Jonathan: Well, the one, you're right, the work aspect is

Speaker:

something. But I will say, you know, within the last couple

Speaker:

of years in my mind, and you can

Speaker:

correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't believe that there's

Speaker:

been a rookie quarterback that has had

Speaker:

an impact on a team like Jaden Daniels had.

Speaker:

>> Brian Mitchell: I mean, last year, CJ Stroud.

Speaker:

>> Jonathan: Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah.

Speaker:

>> Brian Mitchell: But it didn't start off very fast. But like

Speaker:

this right here, Mandy, listen, five

Speaker:

weeks for rookie of the weeks.

Speaker:

>> Jonathan: Yeah.

Speaker:

>> Brian Mitchell: Ah, he's doing stuff that hadn't been done

Speaker:

before and, you know, we don't know where it's going

Speaker:

to end up, but I will go out on the limb and

Speaker:

say, knowing how he works, knowing the person,

Speaker:

you know, and knowing how his upbringing is, I

Speaker:

talked with TJ Husada, who grew up in the area

Speaker:

where he's from. He was praising the kid, you

Speaker:

know, and I watch how his dad and his mom,

Speaker:

you just watch him and you know that he, he's been raised right, you

Speaker:

know what I mean?

Speaker:

>> Jonathan: Yeah.

Speaker:

>> Brian Mitchell: so I think that that's the great thing where

Speaker:

we've had some guys coming here at quarterback that cared

Speaker:

about them and didn't care about the team. He cares

Speaker:

about the team. Yeah. He wants to be great, but you know what? He does everything

Speaker:

you need to do with the team not by himself.

Speaker:

And we know. We've seen quarterbacks do that.

Speaker:

>> Jonathan: Yeah, no, that's. That's good. I'm happy for y'all, and I

Speaker:

know just anytime you get your

Speaker:

sports team kind of headed in the right direction, it

Speaker:

obviously makes the whole, you know, your

Speaker:

whole town, your whole city, whatever. It's just a lot of

Speaker:

fun.

Speaker:

So, for you, after the NFL, what did you find

Speaker:

yourself getting into? I mean, transitioning

Speaker:

from playing the sport that you loved

Speaker:

to now real life,

Speaker:

you, know, what was that transition like for you?

Speaker:

>> Brian Mitchell: You know, it wasn't terrible. I had major in chemical

Speaker:

engineering and business, and, I'm happy as hell I never worked in

Speaker:

that.

Speaker:

Radio and tv. I did it on. I did

Speaker:

Monday night show, radio, and

Speaker:

every Sunday during the season, I would go into the

Speaker:

tv station, do 15 minutes on the news, and then when

Speaker:

I left the game, I ended up doing the same thing. That's what I'm

Speaker:

doing now. I do radio. I do tv.

Speaker:

I do a lot of speaking engagement and things

Speaker:

like that. But I wanted to stay close to this sport,

Speaker:

you know what I'm saying? When I came out of high school,

Speaker:

I told my teacher I wanted to major in,

Speaker:

journalism, broadcast, things like that. She said, oh, no,

Speaker:

you're going to major in engineering. Because I was great in

Speaker:

math and science. I went. I did it, you

Speaker:

know, because my brother was an engineer. But once I got

Speaker:

to the league, and I would hear people discussing football

Speaker:

in such a negative way, and I wanted to have a voice, and

Speaker:

I guess this is my calling because this is what I first wanted to do.

Speaker:

>> RB: I think that's, you know, with this show, we've

Speaker:

had it for about three plus years, and you talk to a lot of

Speaker:

ex athletes, baseball, hockey.

Speaker:

A lot of them are involved in their sport in

Speaker:

some capacity still, because it's. It makes you feel like you're

Speaker:

still part of the game. Yeah, you're retired, and.

Speaker:

But. But for you, let's just say you go to the commanders

Speaker:

field every Sunday. You feel like, man, I'm putting

Speaker:

my nice suit on, and I'm gonna go down and I'm gonna call the game or

Speaker:

whatever. You feel like you're in the game still. And that's.

Speaker:

That's exciting for you still.

Speaker:

>> Brian Mitchell: It is. It is, you know, and, this. It was a time in

Speaker:

this. It was a time in this area where a

Speaker:

lot of veteran players and former players were not allowed

Speaker:

to be a part of it, you know? And ever since, they've hired,

Speaker:

Dan Quinn and Adam Peterson's come in. They

Speaker:

have invited the old guys back

Speaker:

in, you know, and a lot of guys are working in the media

Speaker:

stuff, doing content. A lot of people are coming in and

Speaker:

speaking to them. And it does make you feel good because when you

Speaker:

help build something, you know, if I'm in my basement right now, you look

Speaker:

around here, it's a lot of stuff where I put some work in to

Speaker:

help this team go where it went. And it's

Speaker:

disappointing when you're not allowed to be a part of it now

Speaker:

with the new ownership and all, we are allowed to be a part of

Speaker:

it. And, anything I can, you know, I

Speaker:

will do to make sure this team can get back to where it was.

Speaker:

>> RB: So are you working for the organization or do you have

Speaker:

your own?

Speaker:

>> Brian Mitchell: Okay, well, I have my own radio show, but then I do,

Speaker:

I do pre and post game stuff for the, team on the

Speaker:

weekend, so go on the road with them and things like that,

Speaker:

and, you know, get a chance to, you know how I'm now

Speaker:

with some of the guys on the female. One of the guys grew up in my

Speaker:

hometown, went to my college, and he's now with his team. So that's a

Speaker:

hell of a, you know, similarity right

Speaker:

there.

Speaker:

>> Jonathan: That is. Well, I know that we'll be crossing

Speaker:

paths this year at some point. Nothing physically, but

Speaker:

at least with our teams, because I know, you know, the Steelers will face

Speaker:

off against the commanders at some point later in the season, I believe, playing the

Speaker:

NFC east, but I don't know if it's away or if it's a home game. I don't

Speaker:

know.

Speaker:

>> Brian Mitchell: I can't remember. I try to go one game at a time, like, I'm still

Speaker:

playing.

Speaker:

>> Jonathan: Present moment, baby.

Speaker:

>> Brian Mitchell: Yes.

Speaker:

>> Jonathan: That's what it's all about. So you're in. Are you in DC now? I

Speaker:

know you said you're from Louisiana originally.

Speaker:

>> Brian Mitchell: I'm in Virginia. I live, I live, right outside of DC. So right here in

Speaker:

Virginia, about 15 miles from the facility where they practice

Speaker:

it.

Speaker:

>> Jonathan: So with you now, you know, kind of in this

Speaker:

afterlife of not playing professionally, but you're still

Speaker:

obviously relevant in that scene and whatnot. you have

Speaker:

a, love, or a passion for the game of

Speaker:

golf at all. You ever get out with some of the guys and play?

Speaker:

>> Brian Mitchell: I'm out playing golf a lot. My two passions are playing

Speaker:

golf and, riding bicycles. And I will tell you

Speaker:

why I got. So my mom and dad taught me to be a

Speaker:

giver, you know, and work with charity, because, you know,

Speaker:

hell, I look at my life growing up. Yes,

Speaker:

I wanted to be somebody. I never can imagine the things that I've gone

Speaker:

through. And, ever since I made it, I can remember my dad

Speaker:

said, when you're blessed, you should be a blessing. So now

Speaker:

I play golf a lot, because you can

Speaker:

also have fun in a tournament and raise

Speaker:

money for great causes. I ride bicycles. I've

Speaker:

learned I can ride a bicycle 110

Speaker:

miles that we raised in this one thing this early this

Speaker:

year, over 800 grand. We did another 109.

Speaker:

Mara raised over 400 grand for another charity.

Speaker:

So this is, what I like to do. I can

Speaker:

have fun, get myself in shape while

Speaker:

doing something positive for somebody that needs it.

Speaker:

>> RB: We had another ex NFL football

Speaker:

player. he bicycle rides so

Speaker:

that he can drink doctor pepper and eat chick fil a. And that was Brian

Speaker:

Erlacher. So,

Speaker:

Brian Erlacher, he rides his bike all the time. That's what he said.

Speaker:

He said, I basically ride my mountain bike so I can drink doctor

Speaker:

pepper and eat chick fil a all I want.

Speaker:

>> Brian Mitchell: Well, I actually will ride from my house to, royal

Speaker:

farms. It's about a 15 miles ride to royal

Speaker:

farms. Give me a like for a piece of chicken, and I ride

Speaker:

back home.

Speaker:

But it's fun, you know, it's. It's a, sport. Both of

Speaker:

these sports are sports you can do the rest

Speaker:

of your life. You know, I ride with guys in their sixties and

Speaker:

seventies. I play golf with guys seventies, eighties, and nineties.

Speaker:

You know, some of the guys in seventies still shoot their age as

Speaker:

well, but you could do it the rest of your life, and it doesn't

Speaker:

have a lot of impact on you. So I miss two

Speaker:

sports I've settled on. I'm gonna keep playing them because I've been

Speaker:

hit enough.

Speaker:

>> Jonathan: Yeah, yeah. So

Speaker:

the. The charity aspect, and let me

Speaker:

interject here, because Pep's dad

Speaker:

is 70 and 70,

Speaker:

71. And he's played

Speaker:

260 rounds of golf last year.

Speaker:

He plays golf every day. And he shot his age

Speaker:

recently.

Speaker:

>> RB: He broke his age. I think he broke his age twice last

Speaker:

year.

Speaker:

>> Brian Mitchell: See, that's what I want to do. That's what I'm trying to get. But at

Speaker:

56, I don't think I can get it done.

Speaker:

>> RB: Hey, man, that's a hell of a. Wow, that's a hell of

Speaker:

a round. If you do that, you let us know.

Speaker:

>> Brian Mitchell: I would set a world record right there, buddy.

Speaker:

>> Jonathan: Yeah, 55. but no.

Speaker:

So the charitable aspect of things, it's interesting you bring that

Speaker:

up, because, my lady recently has got involved

Speaker:

with WVU Medicine Children's hospital.

Speaker:

And, you know, she's like, the hospital is

Speaker:

number one. It's the number one rated children's

Speaker:

hospital. The only children's hospital in the state of West

Speaker:

Virginia. Obviously, West Virginia being,

Speaker:

for lack of a better term, a poor state with respect

Speaker:

to a lot of things. this hospital has

Speaker:

provided so many people with resources to be able to come

Speaker:

here, as opposed to going to Pittsburgh for

Speaker:

childcare. And so she

Speaker:

kind of had this, this, idea to get

Speaker:

involved. She wants to do some charity work. So

Speaker:

she comes home from the meeting one day, and she said, you'll never guess what

Speaker:

I'm chairing. And I said, what? And she said,

Speaker:

they want to do a golf tournament to raise money

Speaker:

for the hospital, and they want

Speaker:

me her to

Speaker:

cherishe. And I said, well, that's great. So now the

Speaker:

next question was, how can I help? And I'm like, well, shit, that's a great

Speaker:

question. Cause I've never really done that before.

Speaker:

so, long story short, they have, the hospital

Speaker:

has partnered with, Jack Nicholas foundation,

Speaker:

play yellow, and they have a couple of their

Speaker:

ambassadors involved in that front. But my point to all this

Speaker:

is, when you talk about just golf and what it

Speaker:

does, it's not just, a sport that guys can go out, or

Speaker:

women can go out and play on a weekend and have a few casual drinks,

Speaker:

maybe no drinks at all. There's more to it than

Speaker:

that. It's a bigger game. The impact it has on

Speaker:

people allows us to do things

Speaker:

like what you've done with chair to work and golf

Speaker:

tournaments. But, yeah, so I'm kind of. I'm kind of

Speaker:

teetering on that a little bit. But it's an exciting, exciting thing to kind

Speaker:

of dig in on.

Speaker:

>> Brian Mitchell: If you really think about it, golf is a sport

Speaker:

where you're out there four, four and a half hours. If you're doing a

Speaker:

charity, maybe five and a half, 6 hours,

Speaker:

you have to talk to the person that you're working with, that

Speaker:

you're out there with. And it's a sport where you

Speaker:

could do a lot of, networking, you know.

Speaker:

and what is golf tournament is about networking. You know, you

Speaker:

get people from different backgrounds, like, I'm a sport guy. You get a lot

Speaker:

of business people out there. You get people that actually are, in the business

Speaker:

that you're dealing with, and people that are also charitable

Speaker:

people. You get all those people together, and everybody has a common

Speaker:

cause. I always tell people, the way you do it, you get a great

Speaker:

cause, and you get the right people backing

Speaker:

you. Like you said, jack Nicklaus foundation, you get the right people

Speaker:

backing you. You can't fail, you know, it's a

Speaker:

win win all the way, all the way around. I've done golf

Speaker:

tournaments now for well over. I got here

Speaker:

in 1990. I started playing golf around

Speaker:

96, you know, and I've been doing golf

Speaker:

tournament since then. And I have seen,

Speaker:

I've been involved with golf tournament where we raised $750,000 for

Speaker:

tournament. We raised over a million dollars tournament. Because you have

Speaker:

the right cause and the right business people that want

Speaker:

to have make an impact on society. So it's the

Speaker:

easiest thing in the world.

Speaker:

>> Jonathan: Yeah, no, that's. And again, the

Speaker:

cause for all that is just incredible, you know, to

Speaker:

raise $750,000 for having a

Speaker:

golf tournament, having.

Speaker:

>> RB: A little fun,

Speaker:

smoking a few cigars and raising money.

Speaker:

>> Brian Mitchell: Totally, totally.

Speaker:

>> Jonathan: What course now, when you do an event like that, or

Speaker:

even when you go out where, where, you know, where are you

Speaker:

pegging it up or what? I'm trying to think of the

Speaker:

course outside of Leedsburg. There's a course outside of

Speaker:

Leesburg, Raspberry Falls.

Speaker:

No, it's Lansdowne

Speaker:

River Creek.

Speaker:

>> Brian Mitchell: I know them all.

Speaker:

>> Jonathan: It's a beautiful course, a lot of beautiful homes on it.

Speaker:

It's off this country road. Before you get in Leesburg, kind

Speaker:

of somewhere around there. I played, I want to say there's

Speaker:

the word farms in it, but I don't know if that's

Speaker:

Creighton farms.

Speaker:

>> Brian Mitchell: Yeah, yeah, I've played about 10 miles from my

Speaker:

house. I play that.

Speaker:

>> Jonathan: That is a beautiful track.

Speaker:

>> Brian Mitchell: Yeah. Oh, yeah. And that's a jack nickel

Speaker:

scores.

Speaker:

>> Jonathan: Yeah.

Speaker:

>> RB: So everything.

Speaker:

>> Jonathan: Yeah.

Speaker:

>> RB: Dog leg, right.

Speaker:

>> Brian Mitchell: You got a lot of those other course.

Speaker:

>> Jonathan: Yeah, definitely. That's,

Speaker:

that's a great track.

Speaker:

>> RB: So have you played, burning tree?

Speaker:

>> Brian Mitchell: I haven't played burning tree yet. That's, one of m my bucket lists,

Speaker:

places to go play.

Speaker:

>> RB: I love that logo.

Speaker:

>> Brian Mitchell: Yeah, that's a nice one. A lot of good ones out there,

Speaker:

though.

Speaker:

>> Jonathan: So with your, the pr group that you're working with

Speaker:

or that you're involved with, because I understand through the

Speaker:

communication we received about this and whatnot, that, that

Speaker:

you, and maybe this is not directly you, but you

Speaker:

are putting on another golf event, and this is

Speaker:

with sugar, Ray Leonard's

Speaker:

foundation or something to that effect.

Speaker:

>> Brian Mitchell: Yep. So we're doing a tournament here where we're

Speaker:

basically doing a lot of different things to help empower, working

Speaker:

with women in empowerment to be totally honest with you. And, I've been doing,

Speaker:

tournaments with, as you all know him, as a different name. I call him

Speaker:

Bucky. And also another friend, Marquise, who teamed up with

Speaker:

sugar Ray Leonard junior. And, we've come together to try and

Speaker:

do this tournament. And, it's gonna be at Lakewood country club over there

Speaker:

in Rockville, Maryland. it's. If you want to get more

Speaker:

information, go to lsmcelebrityevents dot

Speaker:

perfectgolf event.com, and, people like

Speaker:

myself. Ah, Sugar Ray Leonard junior. you, got,

Speaker:

Clinton Portis going to be there.

Speaker:

You have Marshall falk. There we go. We got

Speaker:

baseball, too. Johnny Damon. He'll be at the tournament. So

Speaker:

this is about empowering women. And I think, it's on October

Speaker:

21. Listen, man, it's. I do a lot.

Speaker:

Done a lot of tournaments there. They allow you to have

Speaker:

fun, so you got to make the tournament fun. You know,

Speaker:

music playing. You have, all types of, when you show up, we got a

Speaker:

Bloody Mary, bar in the beginning. They treat

Speaker:

you very, very special. So the

Speaker:

ultimate thing is show up for a great cause. Lady

Speaker:

lions of Baltimore and also community bridges of Silver

Speaker:

Spring. I'll be the two charities that can be, getting their

Speaker:

support from this one. So, hell, I say

Speaker:

this, you know, my mom was one of the strongest people in the world for

Speaker:

me. I knew how my dad respected my mom. You know,

Speaker:

with my. My mom spoke, my daddy listened. So

Speaker:

I believe in, like, a lot of people have a problem with

Speaker:

the lady being, in charge or something like that. I believe that everybody should be

Speaker:

empowered. If we empowered ourselves as men, we got to help empower

Speaker:

women, as well.

Speaker:

>> RB: Yeah, I'll tell you what. My ears perked up a little bit to that bloody

Speaker:

Mary Barnab.

Speaker:

>> Brian Mitchell: Oh, yeah. One thing about the golf tournament is that I've been

Speaker:

involved with a lot.

Speaker:

>> RB: Of, libations, so I might mosey on down there. You

Speaker:

guys are gonna be like, who's this guy? What's this guy doing? I'll just

Speaker:

stand at the bloody Mary bar.

Speaker:

>> Brian Mitchell: Hey, man, come on down. I promise you you'll come back again

Speaker:

and you can help us raise more money.

Speaker:

>> Jonathan: Yeah. And if there's a way, you know, obviously

Speaker:

this. Putting this episode out is gonna

Speaker:

get some publicity for the event, but, you know, if there's a way

Speaker:

that we could help out by

Speaker:

sponsoring and, you know, there's a sign put up or something, we'd be happy

Speaker:

to do that, too, Brian, so we can connect on that. you

Speaker:

know, on that point there. But, But, yeah, you

Speaker:

make up. I

Speaker:

always say that we're both, Jonathan and I full time are both in

Speaker:

business. You know, we do this podcast on, quote, unquote, the

Speaker:

side, although it feels like a full time job, but I'm in the oil and gas

Speaker:

business. He's in a jewelry business.

Speaker:

>> Brian Mitchell: Gotcha.

Speaker:

>> Jonathan: so, you know, when you talk about,

Speaker:

especially the cultural shift in terms of

Speaker:

women now, like

Speaker:

the resort that we are partners with

Speaker:

here in southwestern Pennsylvania. Nemacolan resort.

Speaker:

>> Brian Mitchell: Yeah. I play golf there, too.

Speaker:

>> Jonathan: Have you?

Speaker:

>> Brian Mitchell: Yes.

Speaker:

>> RB: It's beautiful courses. Yeah, it's awesome.

Speaker:

>> Brian Mitchell: Where they had the 84 lumber tournament. Late schools. I

Speaker:

played both of those.

Speaker:

>> Jonathan: Yeah. Yeah. Well, and I was just gonna bring up Maggie.

Speaker:

I mean, she is not

Speaker:

only. She is a great person. You know what I mean? In

Speaker:

general, she's just a great person. But you talk about power,

Speaker:

and you talk about determination and the

Speaker:

ability to just continue to, deal with

Speaker:

adversity time and time again.

Speaker:

She is so. I mean, you're

Speaker:

100% right.

Speaker:

The women in the world need to be recognized for the fact that

Speaker:

they are valuable, they are powerful.

Speaker:

>> Brian Mitchell: I just think the whole thing about it. And then, this is where I learn, you

Speaker:

know, I don't care what your race, your creed, your color,

Speaker:

whatever. I don't care what any of that is. If you're given an

Speaker:

opportunity, equal, opportunity to deal with something, I don't

Speaker:

care if it's a man, woman, whatever, you know? But if women

Speaker:

are given the same opportunities as us, they can sit there and compete

Speaker:

with us on a regular basis. You know, a lot of times, they're a little bit more

Speaker:

focused than we are, you know? And I believe in it because, like I tell you,

Speaker:

the people in my life, my mom, my grandmother was

Speaker:

the matriarch of our. Like, that neighborhood I lived on, it

Speaker:

was all one way in, one way out, all family members, and

Speaker:

nobody said nothing unless grandma said it was okay to

Speaker:

happen, you know? So I grew. I've grown up like

Speaker:

that, and I believe in it. I have three daughters myself, and I want

Speaker:

them to understand you could do whatever you want to do, you know, nobody

Speaker:

can tell you what you can't do. You know? go out there and just

Speaker:

try to be your best. And I try to make sure they think like I do. I

Speaker:

was a go getter, and I want them to be the same way.

Speaker:

>> Jonathan: Well, you have a great personality, so, you

Speaker:

know, pivoting off that point, you do some

Speaker:

motivational speaking yes, yes.

Speaker:

>> Brian Mitchell: I spoke with a lot of different places from, you know, data, ah,

Speaker:

bank. I do like the charities. I speak to,

Speaker:

some major businesses around, speaking a lot of, you know,

Speaker:

different seminars and all that they have. And my whole

Speaker:

thing is about a lot of our teamwork and our, self motivation,

Speaker:

because in society today, especially in

Speaker:

business, you don't want to always have to tell somebody, go do

Speaker:

something you want. People that can be self starters,

Speaker:

and that's the best. I think that's the best thing to help me in my

Speaker:

life. When I was. I got to the NFL, being

Speaker:

a former quarterback. When I was handed the playbook, I

Speaker:

didn't wait for them to install the stuff.

Speaker:

I started learning the playbook. So we

Speaker:

got two weeks into, me being up here, and coach

Speaker:

Gibbs said, well, I'm gonna need you to learn stuff because you're gonna be our

Speaker:

emergency quarterback. K quarterback. In college, I'm like,

Speaker:

coach, I got the, I got the office down already. He's like,

Speaker:

what do you mean? I said, well, I went through the whole

Speaker:

playbook. I learned everything. He said, why would you do that? I said,

Speaker:

I'm a quarterback, man. Y'all got me playing just one position now.

Speaker:

That's easy. So I learned the whole thing, what I have to

Speaker:

do, and I was the emergency quarterback. And

Speaker:

that's awesome. By week ten of my rookie season, both

Speaker:

quarterback got hurt. I finished the game at quarterback.

Speaker:

>> RB: Did you?

Speaker:

>> Jonathan: Yes.

Speaker:

>> Brian Mitchell: It's just like being ready for the

Speaker:

situation. I mean, I don't care what you're doing.

Speaker:

Somebody in football, someone, you will get hurt. And

Speaker:

if you're not prepared, that could be your last chance. So you gotta always

Speaker:

be prepared. And definitely in business, the same thing. A lot of

Speaker:

people. I, didn't get a promotion. Well, did you do anything to show

Speaker:

them that you deserve a promotion, right.

Speaker:

>> RB: Or raise or any of that? They just. They just

Speaker:

want. They all want to come out of college and make

Speaker:

$150,000 and be the CEO of dad's

Speaker:

company.

Speaker:

>> Brian Mitchell: Yeah, they want to. They want to be able to. They want to drive

Speaker:

the nice car. They want to be able to go out to the nice dinners,

Speaker:

but you're not putting in the work to be able to have the salary, to be able

Speaker:

to do all that stuff. So, you know, I tell people,

Speaker:

you got to sacrifice a little bit before you start going out there

Speaker:

celebrating.

Speaker:

>> RB: Yeah. Yeah. And I think that. I think whenever you have it, a little

Speaker:

adversity in your life, if you're getting started in the family

Speaker:

business or anything. It's great for you long

Speaker:

term. You've gone through it. You've experienced, the highs,

Speaker:

the lows. It's how you handle a lot of those, too, right? It's

Speaker:

easy to get real high, but when you're real low,

Speaker:

you got to stay even keeled. And that's the same thing in sports, too,

Speaker:

right?

Speaker:

>> Brian Mitchell: Totally, totally. And that's the thing I love. Like, I go back to

Speaker:

Jayden Daniels again, where they like, man,

Speaker:

this letdown game, he said, look, man, I always stay even

Speaker:

killed. So it never let down to me.

Speaker:

He said, I don't get too high. I don't get too low. I stay even

Speaker:

killed. And you, got, if you got that

Speaker:

personality, things are gonna work out. I watched

Speaker:

him, the first interception he threw, the camera

Speaker:

went to his face, and you could see, you know, you just see

Speaker:

the intensity of someone's face. Like,

Speaker:

damn, I knew better. And after

Speaker:

that, he has going on a tear,

Speaker:

dude. So I absolutely love it where

Speaker:

people hate losing more than they

Speaker:

love winning. That changes. That shows you

Speaker:

somebody that's real special.

Speaker:

>> Jonathan: Yeah. And that's one of my favorite quotes, is when

Speaker:

things are going good, it's not really that good. And when things are going

Speaker:

bad, it's not really that bad.

Speaker:

>> Brian Mitchell: There you go. Somebody else has it worse or better than you,

Speaker:

believe me.

Speaker:

>> Jonathan: Yeah. And it's perspective.

Speaker:

>> Brian Mitchell: Yes.

Speaker:

>> Jonathan: And that brings, you know, a point now

Speaker:

to, like, with our youth in today's era. You know,

Speaker:

Jonathan has two young children, and, you know,

Speaker:

I've kind of raised. Not kind of, but my lady

Speaker:

has two young kids. And I do see the

Speaker:

pivotal shift in with respect to technology

Speaker:

being injected on a day to day basis. And

Speaker:

obviously, there's good things about it in some respect with learning.

Speaker:

But, you know, in

Speaker:

our generation, and I'm saying, collectively, you and

Speaker:

pep and I, we didn't have that ability to

Speaker:

come home, pull up YouTube, sit there and watch shorts all

Speaker:

day long, or get on TikTok and watch videos for 3

Speaker:

hours. And I'm. Nor would we want to. We were

Speaker:

outside being creative with our minds, playing in the woods, playing

Speaker:

sports. And nowadays, you got these

Speaker:

kids. Here's, here's the screwed up part, in my opinion. Again,

Speaker:

my opinion, you got these sports that now

Speaker:

are these, these kids that are, that are playing

Speaker:

sports, but they're only playing one sport.

Speaker:

They're getting really good at one sport, whereas

Speaker:

we used to play three or.

Speaker:

>> RB: Four different sports, and they were seasonal, like

Speaker:

hockey. We played hockey. It was October to

Speaker:

March, and then, you know, you played golf

Speaker:

for baseball until June, and then you had

Speaker:

basketball season in the fall. It's just,

Speaker:

I mean, concerned. I'm concerned,

Speaker:

for these kids that are playing one sport.

Speaker:

Baseball, one sport, you know, these kids are playing

Speaker:

baseball year round. I'm watching it.

Speaker:

It was, we have some friends that

Speaker:

are, in the big league or played in the big leagues.

Speaker:

And that's what he said. He said, dude, he said,

Speaker:

travel team at seven, eight years old. It

Speaker:

doesn't matter. That's not how they're going to.

Speaker:

You don't know how good they're going to be till they're 14 years old. Don't burn

Speaker:

them out right now. Let them have fun.

Speaker:

>> Brian Mitchell: I think it's totally ridiculous. I think when you play all the sports,

Speaker:

you develop much better. Your body

Speaker:

begins to find out different things. If you play

Speaker:

only certain sports, you only use certain muscles.

Speaker:

And you watch, like, when I was growing up, no

Speaker:

kid I ever heard that again. Tommy John.

Speaker:

You know, now kids are getting Tommy

Speaker:

John. That's normal, before high school.

Speaker:

And it's a normal thing because they're overworking it, you

Speaker:

know? And let's be real, a lot of the people, that are running all

Speaker:

these different types of things, they're

Speaker:

selfish. They just want to cash in. You

Speaker:

know, my daughters would cheer and dance, and believe me,

Speaker:

oh, my God, money in that boy pay for a lot of damn

Speaker:

college scholarships

Speaker:

already before they ever got to college. Just because.

Speaker:

>> RB: That'S another one that I'm like, this dance

Speaker:

stuff, it's like. And then you,

Speaker:

then you bring it into the self confidence,

Speaker:

because then the social media, these

Speaker:

young kids are posting, well, nobody's liking my

Speaker:

post. I'm not pretty or I'm not good looking.

Speaker:

And it's just like, listen, be who

Speaker:

you are, right? And, I know I had a

Speaker:

friend. I had a friend. I'll read you

Speaker:

the. I'll read you this. What he signed to my

Speaker:

son, my buddy plays professional hockey, and he

Speaker:

signed a jersey to my son for his birthday. And.

Speaker:

And it said, And I thought it was great. It said

Speaker:

to parker, I love watching you grow up. Never

Speaker:

stop being you. I'm

Speaker:

like, that's incredible. Just be

Speaker:

you. And we get so caught up in all this other

Speaker:

stuff.

Speaker:

>> Jonathan: Yeah.

Speaker:

>> Brian Mitchell: See, the whole thing is this my, doc

Speaker:

Walker guy who played for the

Speaker:

rescue before I got here and got, become great friends with

Speaker:

him. He said, why would you go through life trying to

Speaker:

impress people that you don't even know?

Speaker:

You got your mom, your dad, your friends tell you how

Speaker:

great you are, and you care about all these people out

Speaker:

in the world that you don't even know, and half of

Speaker:

them don't care to help you out. they want to

Speaker:

say something to me. Social media is just

Speaker:

there for me that, you got a lot of good things that can happen on it,

Speaker:

but mostly people are just out there just to be asses.

Speaker:

Plain blank.

Speaker:

>> Jonathan: No, it is. And again, to my

Speaker:

point, that this, that what you just

Speaker:

mentioned is going to affect the younger generation

Speaker:

more than like, me. I'm five six. I'm

Speaker:

not tall. But you know what? You can't offend

Speaker:

me.

Speaker:

>> Brian Mitchell: Yeah.

Speaker:

>> Jonathan: I will tell you that right now. You can't offend me.

Speaker:

Nobody. You can't. it's like, I don't.

Speaker:

I'm pretty a quantum us when it comes to my life. It's like,

Speaker:

you know, whatever, I'm just doing me. I'm I'm

Speaker:

me.

Speaker:

>> Brian Mitchell: And you know what? I'll say this. I went through

Speaker:

an era where, remember, Charles Buckley said, I'm not a role

Speaker:

model. He didn't mean he's not a role model. He knows the role model.

Speaker:

He mean, raise your own kids. You know, saying,

Speaker:

and I think then my parents raised me,

Speaker:

I'm raising my kid. And I think there are a lot of parents

Speaker:

today who, their kids are raising them

Speaker:

because, yeah, the parents just see the kid

Speaker:

just like a lot of other people see the kid as a dollar

Speaker:

sign just hit. So

Speaker:

now when your kids are, you need to

Speaker:

see how much social media they thinking in. You need to

Speaker:

also be able to tell them right from wrong. Hell, I knew

Speaker:

when the. When the, when our, bug road runner

Speaker:

dropped the, anvil on Coyote, I knew Coyote wouldn't go die.

Speaker:

Cause it was tv. If not real. I knew I couldn't go do that in real

Speaker:

life. You. I think that's the problem

Speaker:

where we allow music

Speaker:

tv. And when it happened, we go over there, watch.

Speaker:

Why you let them watch all that tv? Why you're not sitting there having a conversation

Speaker:

with them. Talk to your kids. For anybody out there

Speaker:

listening, talk to your damn kids. If you don't

Speaker:

talk to your kids, you can't blame nobody but yourself. Can't blame anybody

Speaker:

else.

Speaker:

>> RB: So true. It's so true.

Speaker:

>> Jonathan: See, we're not just a golf podcast, people.

Speaker:

We actually instill life values into you.

Speaker:

>> Brian Mitchell: Yes.

Speaker:

>> Jonathan: And believe me, I can't agree with you anymore.

Speaker:

that's, that's the truth. But, but no, so you

Speaker:

mentioned you, you came over this way. you know you played Nemicolon?

Speaker:

>> Brian Mitchell: Yes.

Speaker:

>> Jonathan: Have you played Pikewood national?

Speaker:

Pikewood?

Speaker:

>> Brian Mitchell: I've heard of it. I never played it.

Speaker:

>> Jonathan: Well, that would be one if you ever come back over this way, Brian. And you want to

Speaker:

play nemo colon and would love to

Speaker:

have you.

Speaker:

That's true, that's true. Yeah. Because we always say

Speaker:

that to our guests. You know, we're like, hey, man, like, we got to just

Speaker:

peg it up sometime, man, because we, we obviously love

Speaker:

playing golf. And everyone we have on loves playing golf.

Speaker:

>> Brian Mitchell: I mean, I mean, seriously, it's been a game that has

Speaker:

taken me everywhere, man. I've been over to Scotland and played a lot of

Speaker:

these courses we see on tv. It was absolutely

Speaker:

amazing, you know, to go over there and play. And I

Speaker:

travel all over this country playing in golf tournaments,

Speaker:

traveling with my friends, you know, it's a great

Speaker:

sport. That sport is more about life

Speaker:

than any sport.

Speaker:

>> RB: It teaches every life lessons. Yes.

Speaker:

>> Brian Mitchell: Yeah. Cuz you gotta depend on. You can't depend on nobody else.

Speaker:

Well, if you go, be good at it.

Speaker:

>> RB: And, and, you know, you got to take care of the golf

Speaker:

course, right? We replace your divots, fix the.

Speaker:

You gotta rake the bunkers. Like, it's almost like you got to take care of your

Speaker:

room, the golf course, you know,

Speaker:

you could find out a lot about people in

Speaker:

four and a half hours. Like, I can, I can roll with

Speaker:

this guy. I'll play. I'll roll with this guy. Another round of golf. Like, I had

Speaker:

a good time or, man, I hope this guy

Speaker:

took a lot of photos. Cause he's never coming back here type thing, you know what I

Speaker:

mean?

Speaker:

>> Brian Mitchell: Let me tell you this. I had a secret kind of a job at one

Speaker:

point where I had a friend of mine who would take me out to play

Speaker:

with these prospective people, that they were gonna hire.

Speaker:

And he wanted me to watch the guy, see what they doing,

Speaker:

you know, because they worked in finance and

Speaker:

play with this one guy that was dropping balls all over the place,

Speaker:

you know? And that guy didn't get that damn

Speaker:

job. I'm honest with him. I said,

Speaker:

look, I'll let you know what's going on, right? And I say, so

Speaker:

what do you want this information for? He said, well, we may hire him or

Speaker:

not, based off of what you tell us. I mean, I don't call nobody

Speaker:

a job, but then when you really start going through it, you know, golf

Speaker:

is supposed to be a gentleman sport, right?

Speaker:

>> RB: Yeah.

Speaker:

>> Brian Mitchell: And this guy is cheating his ass off. So, hey, he

Speaker:

didn't get the job. Yeah, I told the truth.

Speaker:

>> Jonathan: Exactly. You see that sometimes, like, you know,

Speaker:

you don't want to have that cynical thought of, like, someone blows

Speaker:

their drive way left, and they just run up ahead before

Speaker:

anyone's even in their cart. And in your mind, you're going like, well, I

Speaker:

hope he finds it. But in reality, it's like he's never going to find

Speaker:

it.

Speaker:

>> Brian Mitchell: You find their real ball, and you just hold on to it.

Speaker:

>> Jonathan: Yeah, yeah. Or you get up on a green and

Speaker:

you kind of do a little walk by to see what ball was, and it's a top

Speaker:

flight, and he's been playing title list, and you're like, this little

Speaker:

shithead.

Speaker:

>> Brian Mitchell: I have seen that over and over again.

Speaker:

>> Jonathan: Oh, yeah, yeah,

Speaker:

yeah, yeah. No, I mean, that's one thing about

Speaker:

golf. You got to be. You got to be honest. You're only hurting yourself.

Speaker:

>> Brian Mitchell: There you go. Gotta protect the field, baby. Protect.

Speaker:

>> RB: Yes.

Speaker:

>> Jonathan: Well, man, it was, it was nice having you on here, Brian. It

Speaker:

was a pleasure, getting to hear your story a little bit,

Speaker:

and obviously, your love for golf and the

Speaker:

golf tournament that's going on.

Speaker:

>> Brian Mitchell: Yes.

Speaker:

>> Jonathan: and so we. We appreciate your time, and if you want to tell

Speaker:

the listeners, again, the link to head

Speaker:

on over to. For this, golf tournament.

Speaker:

>> Brian Mitchell: All right. It's lsm. That's Leonard sports management. Celebrity

Speaker:

events dot perfectgolf event.

Speaker:

>> Jonathan: Okay.

Speaker:

>> Brian Mitchell: Not an s event. Not events,

Speaker:

events on the celebrity events, but the

Speaker:

perfect golf event. No.

Speaker:

>> RB: S.com.

Speaker:

>> Jonathan: Yeah. Very good. I love it.

Speaker:

>> Brian Mitchell: Appreciate it.

Speaker:

>> Jonathan: Well, yeah, we'll, have to stay in touch here. And, pep,

Speaker:

you got a tap in or we not doing tap

Speaker:

in? You got a tap in?

Speaker:

>> RB: Yeah.

Speaker:

>> Jonathan: All right, so we're rounding this out, Brian. This is our final

Speaker:

segment of the show called the Tap in. Segment M,

Speaker:

presented by Betnardi Golf. Check him out

Speaker:

online@bettenardi.com. dot Jonathan's gonna ask you four

Speaker:

questions at the man. Your quick response, and he'll take it away.

Speaker:

>> Brian Mitchell: Well, I put with Benardi, sir. Let's go.

Speaker:

>> Jonathan: Do you?

Speaker:

>> Brian Mitchell: Yes.

Speaker:

>> RB: All right. That makes it easier.

Speaker:

>> Jonathan: Shoot.

Speaker:

>> RB: So, what piece of advice would you

Speaker:

give a young Brian Mitchell

Speaker:

to live by?

Speaker:

>> Brian Mitchell: Whoo. Boyd,

Speaker:

every. You don't have to, challenge everything.

Speaker:

>> RB: It's a good one. Favorite golf

Speaker:

course you've played?

Speaker:

>> Brian Mitchell: Favorite golf course I'll play was Cascada in Las Vegas,

Speaker:

a little bit outside of Las Vegas.

Speaker:

>> RB: I heard that clubhouse is sick. They got a river, like, going through it.

Speaker:

>> Brian Mitchell: Go right through the clubhouse. Yes.

Speaker:

>> RB: All right. Dream for some that can be dead or

Speaker:

alive dream for some.

Speaker:

>> Brian Mitchell: Oh, man. Muhammad Ali.

Speaker:

who's my favorite? Sam Snead and tiger

Speaker:

woods.

Speaker:

>> RB: That's a good. All right, last question.

Speaker:

What are you chasing?

Speaker:

>> Brian Mitchell: I'm chasing perfection. Everybody has. I

Speaker:

mean, you'll never get to it, but if you're striving to get to it, you'll

Speaker:

get better.

Speaker:

>> RB: I love it.

Speaker:

>> Jonathan: That's good advice.

Speaker:

>> RB: Brian Mitchell, thank you so much. And I love that you

Speaker:

have that Super bowl ring on. I might have to wear that one day if I'm

Speaker:

allowed.

Speaker:

>> Brian Mitchell: When we tear it up, I'll make sure.

Speaker:

>> Jonathan: Look at that. I love it. I love it,

Speaker:

man. Hey, we really appreciate your time, Brian.

Speaker:

>> Brian Mitchell: I mean, thank you.

Speaker:

>> RB: Well, that was a fun interview with Brian Mitchell. you

Speaker:

know, it's cool to see that he is still

Speaker:

involved in his sport, and I think, ah,

Speaker:

that's big for a lot of these athletes. What am I going

Speaker:

to do after retire? Right? What can I

Speaker:

do? Well, a lot of them want to stay in the sports that they've

Speaker:

played their whole entire life, and it's cool to see that he's got

Speaker:

the pre and post game for the, Washington commanders.

Speaker:

>> Jonathan: Yeah, no, it was awesome. Awesome here. And his. What an

Speaker:

energetic guy. And I think that's really something

Speaker:

that we try to exhibit here on the show, is that, look,

Speaker:

we're more inclined to talk with people that are doing

Speaker:

something, and he exhibits that. Great

Speaker:

cause. Great human being loves golf,

Speaker:

so what can you say?

Speaker:

>> RB: I'd love to be at that bloody Mary bar, boys. I'm a big bloody

Speaker:

Mary guy now, so.

Speaker:

>> Jonathan: I know. And that golf tournament, you guys, check it out. It's

Speaker:

actually happening this upcoming weekend,

Speaker:

but, it is for a good cause. So maybe next year. Put that

Speaker:

on your radar if it's something you want to get involved in.

Speaker:

Yeah, we're a little bit behind the eight ball on that, but

Speaker:

happy, to form a relationship with him and his pr group, and

Speaker:

we'll see where that goes. But, yeah, it's fun.

Speaker:

We. We kind of got this. So, Brian

Speaker:

Mitchell wraps up today, and then looking

Speaker:

forward to the next episode, we got Greg camp coming

Speaker:

on the podcast pep now.

Speaker:

Greg camp, this guy is the guy that pep thought was the long

Speaker:

driver down in Nashville. but he owns an

Speaker:

outfitting company, involved in a lot

Speaker:

of hunts, per

Speaker:

se, big game hunts, you know,

Speaker:

so he's done a lot of things like

Speaker:

that. We've never really had someone that's been

Speaker:

involved as a professional, quote unquote hunter or

Speaker:

owning an outdoor apparel company like

Speaker:

that. So it'll be kind of get his take a little

Speaker:

bit.

Speaker:

>> RB: Well, and I'm excited for us, too, because

Speaker:

we've committed to our first duck hunt,

Speaker:

in mid November. So that's gonna be a lot of

Speaker:

fun.

Speaker:

>> Jonathan: Oh, yeah. Yeah. Duck hunter. That was a great

Speaker:

game, by the way, on Nintendo. And if you need to

Speaker:

get well, you need to shoot some shells.

Speaker:

>> RB: But you got shotgun.

Speaker:

>> Jonathan: I got a nice shotgun.

Speaker:

>> RB: I gotta practice.

Speaker:

>> Jonathan: Well, take yo butt up to

Speaker:

Nemico and the field club. At Nemico and his

Speaker:

rocker right now. They got all kind of clay pigeons, clay

Speaker:

sports. You could set it up, do it as you want, shoot,

Speaker:

or sit at their bar, have a drink. But that's at

Speaker:

Nemicolan Resort in Farmington, Pennsylvania, south

Speaker:

of Pittsburgh. A phenomenal destination all

Speaker:

four seasons. So you people out there listening from other

Speaker:

states, part of the country, across the country, whatever

Speaker:

you are, wherever you are, check out Nemocollan

Speaker:

online@nemecullen.com. and I'm sure they

Speaker:

have something for you because they have something

Speaker:

for you. So that means

Speaker:

everyone's included, man.

Speaker:

>> RB: Everyone.

Speaker:

>> Jonathan: Thursday, we're wrapping it up

Speaker:

here, guys, and it's been a fun

Speaker:

episode, as always. Pep, what you got to say?

Speaker:

>> RB: I don't got much more other than, ah, have yourself a

Speaker:

great week. Chase them this week. Weekend.

Speaker:

And let's put a smile on our faces and walk around, make

Speaker:

every everybody's life a little brighter. Huh? Huh? Let's do it and

Speaker:

go chase them. chasing underscore birdies. But

Speaker:

that was a good photo. You in the golf cart, by the way. This week looked,

Speaker:

like you had a hockey puck in your pocket, had a nice miller

Speaker:

light, and you didn't play in the event. So that was great.

Speaker:

>> Jonathan: It was great. Just a participant.

Speaker:

but I was there. I was there.

Speaker:

PGA Tour this week. Kicking off the shriners open

Speaker:

at TPE Summerlin.

Speaker:

And by the way, the new 2025 Pro v one and pro

Speaker:

v one X's will be in the field this week.

Speaker:

>> RB: So you see that you probably played them before

Speaker:

they did.

Speaker:

>> Jonathan: I, probably. But, you guys, thanks again for

Speaker:

tuning in. Thank you to Ally, evo Emily over at simpler media

Speaker:

putting this thing together. Jacqueline de Paterio, Rachel London.

Speaker:

Appreciate all y'all's help.

Speaker:

>> RB: Wait a minute, dude.

Speaker:

>> Jonathan: What's that?

Speaker:

>> RB: It's a big weekend. Happy birthday to you,

Speaker:

kid.

Speaker:

>> Jonathan: There. That's two days away.

Speaker:

>> RB: Well, I know. Happy

Speaker:

birthday to you, and I hope you do something

Speaker:

special, this weekend. And

Speaker:

you, deserve it. And I'm not going to put a picture collage

Speaker:

together of you, of, you

Speaker:

know, being my friend and all that, but that's. This is the

Speaker:

best you're going to get from me. Happy birthday to you

Speaker:

and to another year. Year, bud.

Speaker:

>> Jonathan: I appreciate it. I really do, bud. And thanks for,

Speaker:

Thanks for the sincerity. I feel it.

Speaker:

And that's that. Guys, we're wrapping

Speaker:

it up. Y'all enjoy your weekend. We'll catch you all in.

Speaker:

Well, actually, no, we won't catch you in two. We'll catch you in one. Ciao.

Speaker:

Ciao.
