Felicity

Foreign.

Felicity

Welcome back to the Promoted podcast, the podcast that helps you get promoted and be great when you get there.

Felicity

Happy 2025, Renee.

Felicity

We are back in the game of podcasting.

Felicity

How has the start of your year been?

Felicity

How are you?

Felicity

What's news in your world?

Renee

Oh, my God.

Renee

So good to be back.

Renee

Welcome back to our listeners as well.

Renee

We've missed you guys and we can't wait to get into all of your Promoted queries, pickles and promotions for the year ahead.

Renee

Felicity, it's so good to be back.

Renee

I'm on Larrakia country now.

Renee

I have made the move from the east coast of Australia to the Northern Territory, which is crazy.

Renee

I'm up in Darwin.

Renee

So this Christmas holiday has been less holiday and more business and moving and packing and yeah, it's been a hectic Christmas period, to be honest, but feeling really settled now that I'm in Lia.

Renee

I'm very excited for 2025 and the year ahead for sure.

Renee

What about you, Felicity?

Renee

How has your 2025 kicked off?

Felicity

It's been great.

Felicity

I mean, I love this time of year where it's this reflection piece, regrouping.

Felicity

I am so ready to get into the year.

Felicity

We have been on this beautiful motorhome trip for the last couple of weeks, or actually even it's been about two months, which has been huge.

Felicity

And it's been so n spend time with family, working on the road, having a whole mix of being in nature, being in all those beautiful, happy places, as well as getting to do some really fun work.

Felicity

So, yeah, today we're heading back up the coast.

Felicity

We just left Sydney yesterday we're heading to Brisbane and then sunny coast and today I am in Forster.

Felicity

Tongue curry in wormy.

Felicity

Wormy.

Felicity

I'm not sure that's the correct pronunciation.

Renee

I think that war am I?

Felicity

Where am I?

Felicity

Yeah, we're my country today.

Felicity

Yeah.

Felicity

And yeah, I've actually been thinking a lot about goals this year and for me, I've got to focus on instead of the outcome or the goal, focusing on the process or the inputs rather than the outputs.

Felicity

And the way that I've been told to think about goals traditionally is the smart goals, you know, or.

Felicity

Yeah, thinking about that end result like I'm going to run the marathon or I'm going to produce X, Y, Z.

Felicity

But.

Felicity

But that is actually.

Felicity

Can be quite tricky to control sometimes.

Felicity

Actually it is tricky to control a lot of the time on these goals.

Felicity

Actually, as James Clear says in his book Atomic Habits, it's about focusing on the process and the input Inputs and those things that you're doing every single week that actually lead you to achieving that goal.

Felicity

So this year I'm focusing on that part of the equation, the inputs.

Felicity

And I've got one goal which is all around sustainable performance and having a breakthrough year.

Felicity

And it really stood out to me, actually, when I went on holidays at the beginning of December because I was totally exhausted.

Felicity

And I don't know if you've ever done this, Renee, where you're like limping to your holiday.

Felicity

You're hoping to get there, and then you get there and you crash and you're totally exhausted.

Felicity

So for me, my visual, you know, image of what does that look like in reality at the end of 2025, that is me going on holidays at the end of the year going, oh, my gosh, I feel rejuvenated, I feel fantastic, I feel great.

Felicity

I'm not completely exhausted.

Felicity

So that's my big goal for the year.

Felicity

How about you?

Felicity

Have you got some.

Felicity

Have you got some big go?

Felicity

Oh, well, I know you've got some exciting goals.

Felicity

There is some awesome personal ones that are happening for you in April, but have you got any big goals for 2025?

Renee

I do.

Renee

As you know, I always have some big goals, just like you, Felicity.

Renee

A big part of that, I think for me is really injecting a lot of energy into our promoted podcast this year and bringing some new and exciting content and maybe even some new platforms to our audience.

Renee

So very, very excited to kind of build that out with you and bring that to all of our listeners.

Renee

But can I just reflect on your goal?

Renee

I think this is phenomenal for you because for the length of time that I' known you, you always burn the candle.

Renee

And so I am excited for you to learn how to integrate your life and really give more self care and attention to how you're looking after yourself.

Renee

And for me, I haven't had that burnout marathon to the end of the year where you're like, just waiting to get to that last step since uni, actually.

Renee

So 2016, I think, was the last time I crashed and burned in my last holiday leading up to Christmas.

Renee

So I can't tell you how change, but I think exercise and just knowing that that was like a really unhealthy way to live my life.

Renee

And I think, you know, uni is different, right?

Renee

And it's really hard because you have to meet these deadlines.

Renee

There's no pushing things back or, you know, being able to slow down.

Renee

But then I think real life plus parenting plus running your own businesses, like, you've got really this like crazy amalgamation of things that you're working on.

Renee

So I'm excited for you.

Renee

I feel like this year is going to be so wholesome for you, for your family, for our business, for your other businesses.

Renee

So I'm really, really excited for you.

Renee

For me, what are my goals this year?

Renee

I think more family focused, but also so much in the career space, as always.

Renee

As everybody knows, I went to NASA JPL last year for an internship and I don't know if it's too early to come to a conclusion on that yet, but it gave me such a great behind the scenes understanding of what a career in the space sector could look like that I think I've come to the conclusion.

Renee

It's a big call to make.

Renee

I think I've come to the conclusion that I love sustainable aviation perhaps more than the space sector Right now.

Renee

I'm really excited by the culture at Lanzajet, who I'm currently working with.

Renee

We're there to develop and license our technology to produce sustainable aviation fuel and we're trying to reduce global emissions of the aviation sector.

Renee

So for me, it just is such an exciting goal to contribute, contribute to.

Renee

It's imperative for our future generations and just the pace at which we're moving and also the context of the work we're doing.

Renee

I think after spending another 10 weeks strapped to a desk thinking about publishing papers and looking at the fundamentals of mathematics and working through all of those very dense calculations, whether it's calculus or.

Renee

Yeah, just really deep mathematics, I.

Renee

I think I kind of come to the conclusion that it's not my forever.

Renee

So it was a big decision to make.

Renee

And, you know, I've also realized that astronauts, you know, a huge part of their role is to publish papers, to run experiments, and to do that hardcore math up in space.

Renee

Yeah.

Renee

And so if I'm not absolutely, like, loving that, the way that I love this podcast and the work that we're doing and the work I'm doing for my career, yeah, I've had to come to that conclusion.

Renee

So that's.

Renee

That's been something I've been churning and burning on, to be honest, for the past probably three or four months.

Renee

Is, is this, you know, a fork in the road for me and am I letting go of a dream that I thought I may have?

Renee

So we're still sitting on that.

Renee

I think I'm fairly comfortable with it now, but it's always really hard.

Renee

Right.

Renee

There's a lot of pressure from society on, like, oh, you've already said that you wanted to achieve that thing and now you're deviating from that.

Renee

Like, is that okay?

Renee

Can I tell my friends and family that?

Renee

And they not have their expectations, like, taken away?

Renee

And yeah, I, I think I'm fairly comfortable with that.

Renee

I've done that most of my life, to be honest.

Renee

I've always made decisions and chased chase things in my career that other people probably wouldn't have picked.

Renee

So I'm very used to that kind of feedback around.

Renee

Wow.

Renee

Like, I'm so surprised you made that decision.

Renee

But yeah, that's probably been the biggest thing for me, to be honest, in, in making that decision.

Felicity

Yeah.

Renee

Fork in the road.

Felicity

Yeah.

Felicity

And a big part of goals.

Felicity

And Alex Hormozi talks about this, about being committed.

Felicity

He says, you know, when you choose to marry somebody, you're saying no to every single other person on the planet because you're saying, I'm choosing this person above everyone else.

Felicity

And I thought that analogy is so helpful when you're committing to a goal or you're committing to something because it actually has you forego all of those other opportunities.

Felicity

And I feel like that about, you know, having just one simple goal for the year is.

Felicity

I'm foregoing everything else, whether that means there's.

Felicity

There's some projects that I've committed to, like yourself, that I've.

Felicity

I'm actually clear I'm not going to continue.

Felicity

So I've got a phone call tomorrow with somebody to complete that share that I'm not going to.

Felicity

I'm not.

Felicity

And I won't say it right now because I haven't had that conversation yet.

Felicity

And to say this actually doesn't fit with this for next year.

Felicity

And there's a whole process to me of, well, I've actually got to learn about myself to go, what makes me work optimally?

Felicity

Where am I in my flow state?

Felicity

What have I got to outsource?

Felicity

What have I got to change about how I work to.

Felicity

To have that goal?

Felicity

And so I love that idea of you actually committing to something and you're saying no to a bunch of other things.

Felicity

I think often we commit to things, but we don't actually say all of those no's as well.

Felicity

And I think that's a really, really powerful part of it too.

Renee

I agree.

Renee

And it's exciting because I think what it has helped me do is really get clear now on like, so how am I going to focus my energy and how am I going to absolutely smash my job?

Renee

How am I going to Inject my energy now into things that I absolutely love.

Renee

So, you know, for me, moving to Larrak and just becoming a part of the Darwin community now.

Renee

So how do I inspire the generations of people up here about sustainable aviation?

Renee

I'm thinking about going into the universities and trying to deliver lectures and to just start sharing my career to kind of inspire this next community.

Renee

So that's a big goal for me this year is giving back to the community here in Darwin, I think learning and traveling more around this country as well and learning more about, again, my own culture, but the culture of the Larrackay people up here and thinking about how I can kind of again, support, promote and just advocate for first nations rights and needs and then outside of the community.

Renee

Yeah, big relationship goals as well this year.

Renee

So getting married in just under three months, which is so exciting.

Renee

So excited to have you there with me, Felicity, on my big day.

Renee

Yeah, it'll be beautiful to share it with you and so many of my.

Renee

Yeah, my closest people.

Renee

And then, yeah, career wise, you know, Promoted, as I've already mentioned, doing a lot more in this space for the Promoted podcast and just making sure that we're delivering incredible projects and sustainable aviation fuel not only in the Asia Pacific region, but globally.

Renee

So a lot of travel again this year, which I'm really excited for.

Renee

What's really interesting is, you know, a lot of the work that I've done in my past few roles around first nations engagement, trying to elevate first nations culture within Western cultures, within, you know, big organizations, is now being leveraged within the work that I'm doing for LanzaJet in delivering sustainable aviation fuel projects.

Renee

So thinking about when we're going to set these projects up, how are we working with the local custodians of the lands that we're setting these projects up on, how are we, you know, making sure there's a revenue sharing model with the local people, really making sure that we're thinking about not just commercial benefit, but environmental, biodiversity and people benefit as well in the way that we're rolling out these projects.

Renee

So it's really exciting to start adapting my knowledge in all of my previous career positions to now elevate the LanzaJet product and service.

Renee

So, yeah, there's a lot to deliver this year.

Renee

Another exciting year.

Felicity

Yeah, I love that.

Felicity

I think it's really interesting when you do change roles or go into something new.

Felicity

You don't realize the experience that you've got that.

Felicity

Oh, actually, yeah, this can apply here.

Felicity

This is really relevant so that's so cool that it's bringing together and I feel like the more.

Felicity

Yeah.

Felicity

Experience I have in my career, my work that you.

Felicity

Oh, wow.

Felicity

Okay.

Felicity

Actually it all like can be related and can make sense and there's those dots that you can connect going backwards, which early in your career, I think that's a really tricky thing to kind of try and get your head around.

Renee

Yeah, agree.

Renee

And again, I think a really great call out for our listeners here is sometimes you can't always map your next step to where you are currently or it doesn't make sense or it feels quite disjointed.

Renee

And then all of a sudden you've made a few of those kind of random steps in your career and you look back and you're wow, I've got this incredible perspective and I've learned this about that certain role and now in my future role because I've already seen it and I've seen it applied in a different context to all the other people around me.

Renee

Your, your skills, your experience, like your unique perspective really is highly valuable in so many different contexts then.

Renee

So yeah, I guess that's a quick shout out to everybody.

Renee

You know, sometimes a move can be really random and can be very left field.

Renee

But certainly from my experience, every left field role that I've ever has just added more and more uniqueness, knowledge, skills and just appreciation for what my path has been to be able to kind of give back and, and move forward on other projects.

Renee

So it's an exciting time.

Renee

Good.

Felicity

And I really want to call out to the bravery it takes to have a goal, have a dream and then change your mind on it.

Felicity

Because I've done that on a lot of like for example, I thought, yes, I love public speaking so much.

Felicity

I want to do that as my full time thing.

Felicity

And so I did more public speaking and get paid to do it and I still love doing it.

Felicity

And then I realized it's actually know how I want to spend all of my time because there was other things that came along with a career like that that I didn't enjoy that went in my flow state that I didn't like.

Felicity

And so I think actually a really important part of goal setting and you know, you know, figuring out what you want is going through that process.

Felicity

And I think that is just, just part of it.

Felicity

And I think if you don't commit to it and actually start taking action and discovering what it is to achieve that goal, then it just becomes this hope in this dream that doesn't actually materialize into a Reality and actually going down that path and going, oh, I tried it.

Felicity

It wasn't the right fit.

Felicity

Okay, now I'm going to do something different is part of the goal process.

Felicity

I really want to call it out, Renee, because I think that's really important part of it and it takes a lot of courage.

Renee

Yeah.

Renee

And to that point, yeah, it's funny, in July last year, you know, the Australian Financial Review published the article when I won the AFR Boss Young Executives Award.

Renee

And it said, you know, this CEO hopeful doesn't to just become a CEO.

Renee

She wants to become an astronaut.

Renee

That was literally the title put all across the Australian Financial Review.

Renee

And now potentially, I'm backing down from that goal.

Renee

So, you know, it is.

Renee

It is.

Renee

There is a bit of pressure and it does take a bit of bravery to really lock in.

Renee

And all of that comes from really trusting your gut.

Renee

Like, where do you want to put your energy?

Renee

Where are you finding the most enjoyment?

Renee

How do you set yourself up so that every day is an exciting day for you because you get to put your energy into stuff that you really want to show up for?

Renee

So.

Felicity

And then it's.

Felicity

Yeah, it's funny to think, oh, you know, that's so easy to do, right?

Felicity

Like, oh, I said I was going to do this, and it was in the paper.

Felicity

Like, that's very public that that was out there.

Felicity

But also then, are you going to live your life?

Felicity

Because there was some article that got published.

Felicity

What a silly.

Renee

Yeah, exactly.

Felicity

So good.

Felicity

I love this.

Felicity

This has been awesome.

Felicity

We were going to get into dms, but I think we haven't.

Felicity

We've run out of time.

Felicity

We'll have to get into DMS the next episode.

Felicity

So there's a bit of an enticer for our next episode.

Felicity

Any final thoughts on goal setting the year ahead?

Felicity

Top tips for people.

Felicity

You've never set goals.

Felicity

Where should you even start anything like that that you want to share with people?

Renee

Well, I think, you know, New Year's Eve is always that time for reflection.

Renee

And then, you know, early 2025 is really kind of that month where you think about, am I.

Renee

What am I going to achieve this year?

Renee

What do I really want to set myself up?

Renee

And maybe not everybody is in that routine yet, but I really find January is the perfect time to kind of sit down, post the mad rush of Christmas and running around to see friends and family.

Renee

So first of all, I would encourage people to take a couple of hours, go and sit down in a quiet space, get out your journal and just think about who am I?

Renee

What do I want to achieve this year?

Renee

And then what steps do I need to start taking to really action those?

Renee

Because I think that that's going to add just so much value to your purpose, to your why, to understanding how you're going to actually, you know, put in place and take the action that you want to feel good about yourself.

Renee

Because I think that's ultimately why we do these exercises is we want to know how we're spending our time, we want to feel intentional and we want purpose because that's what really motivates everybody.

Renee

So start small.

Renee

I know.

Renee

I think goal setting can feel very intimidating and it can make you feel like you need to have really big things on there, like, you know, finish your degree or start a degree or you know, find a relationship that's worth having or, you know, start that business.

Renee

They don't have to be huge milestones.

Renee

They could be really small things.

Renee

Like I want to put myself first, I want to get really good at self care.

Renee

So once a month I'm going to go and get a massage.

Renee

I'm going to commit to 8,000 steps a day because I need to move my body because I know that makes me feel good.

Renee

Like think about and just break down those small goals because I think once you start smashing those small goals, it really elevates your sense of self and then you can start feeling really confident to knock over those huge ones.

Renee

So maybe I'll end there.

Renee

Felicity, what do you think?

Felicity

Yeah, I think for me, what's really, I'm really thinking about this year is how do I build the team around me to support myself achieving goals.

Felicity

And so I've just started working with two new coaches and I think they're so.

Felicity

They've been so helpful so far at seeing blind spot, helping me identify the things I'm really, really good at.

Felicity

So a small goal for could be, what am I good at?

Felicity

It's amazing.

Felicity

I think the amount of people that I meet that don't know what their strengths are and what they're good at.

Felicity

So, yeah, for me, I think having that team around you and it might not be a partner.

Felicity

And for me, because I have my husband who I'm also in business with, who's also the father of our children.

Felicity

So that's a lot to have in that one relationship.

Felicity

So having those really, you could say committed listener is one way I've heard it phrased before.

Felicity

It could be a psychologist who's on your team that can help you throughout this year with those goals.

Felicity

So I think it's great.

Felicity

Have that reflection time and then, yeah, share with someone.

Felicity

And it's been so helpful.

Felicity

I just had a coaching call this morning and my coach was saying, oh, do you know these are your strengths?

Felicity

And that's really, really powerful and going, oh, yeah, I'm good at that.

Felicity

I totally forgot about that.

Felicity

So that would be my kind of key thing to think about for people of great, you've set some goals or you've got a goal in mind.

Felicity

Who's that support crew?

Felicity

Who's that team around you?

Felicity

And that's what we're thinking about coming into our free one day leadership training as well.

Felicity

So it's happening on the 8th of February in Brisbane.

Felicity

It's completely free.

Felicity

We'd love to as many people as possible from the community there.

Felicity

That's a great time to have that reflection to think about the year ahead, to get ready for leadership, figure out what is it for you in your leadership next year that you want to take on and actually find those people around you as well.

Felicity

So if you're keen to come along, go to We Aspire Education and you'll find the free one day uplift leadership training there in Brisbane.

Felicity

And that's a great way as well to set yourself up happily for the year.

Renee

Head Incredible.

Renee

And as always, you know, come on the journey with us for 2025.

Renee

Please subscribe to the podcast.

Renee

Felicity.

Felicity

We'll see if we've achieved these goals at the end of the year.

Felicity

You guys, amazing listeners, can hold us accountable.

Felicity

Tell us what your goals are to send them in.

Felicity

We'd love to hear from you and we'll see you in the episode.

Felicity

Renee, thanks so much.

Renee

See you there.
