Mr. Funky Teacher, Nicholas Kleve

This is Mr. Funky Teacher with BeAFunkyTeacher.com. I'm coming to you with another Be a Funky Teacher podcast. Welcome back, everyone. Today's episode is called Saturday Stories. Leadership Spread Joy and Happiness — It Started at One Table. Before we jump into today's story, I want to ground myself in gratitude. Here are three things that I'm thankful for. The first thing that I'm thankful for is small moments of laughter in a classroom. The kind that remind us school can still feel joyful. The second thing I'm thankful for is students who quietly lift others up without even realizing they're doing it. And the third thing I'm thankful for is the reminder that positive energy doesn't have to be loud to matter. Well, it's Saturday, which means it's time for another Saturday story from the Leadership Kit. For the past few weeks, we've been talking about attitude. First, we talked about choosing your attitude. Then we talked about how attitude can shift the mood around you. And today we close this part of the Leadership Kit with one more step. Sometimes the way we show up doesn't just change one moment. Sometimes it spreads. Let's step into the story. This episode is part of the Leadership Kit. The value we're focusing on this week is attitude. The skill students are practicing is spread joy and happiness. And the story you're about to hear is called It Started at One Table. The characters in the story are Aaliyah, Jaden, Sophia, and Mateo. I'm going to read the story all the way through. No interruptions. I'm just going to read it. We're going to get started, and then we'll talk about it. Here we go. It Started at One Table. The room felt quiet that morning. Not the peaceful kind of quiet. The heavy kind. Students were working, but slowly. The assignment looked harder than everyone expected. Jaden tapped his pencil. “This is going to take forever,” he muttered. Mateo stared at the page. Sophia read the directions again. Aaliyah leaned forward. “Okay,” she said. “What if we try the first one together?” Jaden shrugged. “Fine.” They started talking through it slowly. Step by step. Sophia caught something in the directions. Mateo figured out the second part. Jaden wrote the answer. Aaliyah leaned back. “All right,” she said. “One down.” Jaden grinned. “Only nine more to go.” Mateo laughed. It wasn't loud. But the table felt different. A minute later another group looked over. “What did you guys do for number one?” someone asked. Jaden slid the paper slightly so they could see. “Start with the second step,” Sophia said. “It makes the first one easier.” Soon another group was talking. Then another. The room didn't get noisy. But it got lighter. Later, as they packed up, Mateo said quietly, “That went better than I thought.” Aaliyah nodded. Jaden said, “Yeah, it kinda started here.” Sophia smiled. Sometimes joy spreads the same way problems do. One table at a time. Well, that is our skill focus — spreading joy and happiness. Funky teachers, joy doesn't always mean excitement. Sometimes it means encouragement. Sometimes it means helping someone else start. Sometimes it means deciding not to make a hard moment heavier. Energy spreads. Students feel it. Teachers feel it. And classrooms change because of it. As you go through this with students, always start with a reflection question. Something like: Have you ever seen a classroom mood change because of one person or one group? Then move to noticing questions like: What did Aaliyah do to get things started? How did Jaden, Sophia, and Mateo contribute? When did the mood of the room begin to change? Later in the week you might ask questions like: What does spreading joy look like in school? Does it have to be loud or silly? How can one student influence a whole room? This week I challenge you to help students notice influence, not control. Influence. As the week goes on, name moments when students lift others up. You might say, “That helped the whole group.” Or, “That changed the whole room.” Or, “That’s how leadership spreads.” Students often don't realize the power they carry. Stories help them see it. If you want the printable version of this story with teacher questions and a student handout you can use with students, you can find it at BeAFunkyTeacher.com. It is free for classroom use. As you head into your week, here's the leadership focus. Energy spreads. Sometimes frustration spreads. Sometimes encouragement spreads. The question is, what will start at your table?
