Speaker AHere's today's reading.
Speaker AReading from Luke 12:49 56 from the Message to Start a Fire I've come to start a fire on this earth.
Speaker AHow I wish it were blazing right now.
Speaker AI've come to change everything, turned everything right side up.
Speaker AHow I long for it to be finished.
Speaker ADo you think I came to smooth things over and make everything nice?
Speaker ANot so.
Speaker AI've come to disrupt and confront.
Speaker AFrom now on, when you find five in a house, it will be three against two, two against three, father against son and son against father, mother against daughter and daughter against mother, mother in law against bride and bride against mother in law.
Speaker AThen he turned to the crowd.
Speaker AWhen you see clouds coming in from the west, you say storm's coming and you're right.
Speaker AAnd when the wind comes out of the south, you say this will be a hot one.
Speaker AAnd you're right.
Speaker AFrauds.
Speaker AYou know how to tell a change in the weather, so don't tell me you can't tell a change in the season, the God season we're in right now.
Speaker AWow, what a powerful reading about Jesus as a revolutionary.
Speaker AAnd these are radical words that Jesus has about disruption, conflict and discerning about the signs of transforming times.
Speaker ALet's get into our points to ponder.
Speaker AThe first is about going beyond nice religion.
Speaker AJesus explicitly challenges the notion that he came to, quote, smooth things over, make everything nice.
Speaker AThis disrupts comfortable Christianity that emphasizes personal peace while ignoring systematic injustice.
Speaker AThe fire Jesus speaks of isn't about destruction, but about purifying transformation of unjust systems.
Speaker ASecond point is about the cost of liberation.
Speaker AThe description of family division isn't Prescriptive but descriptive.
Speaker AWhen people begin to challenge systematic injustice, it often creates tension, even in close relationships.
Speaker AThis speaks to contemporary experiences of those whose justice work puts them at odds, even with family members who benefit from existing systems.
Speaker AThe third point to ponder is about reading the signs.
Speaker AJesus criticism about weather versus Social discernment remains remarkably relevant today.
Speaker AWhile we track market trends and weather patterns, we often ignore clear signs of social crisis, rising inequality, climate emergency systemic racism.
Speaker ATrue discipleship requires us to read and respond to these signs of our times.
Speaker ALet's talk about an action step.
Speaker ALet's practice sacred disruption.
Speaker AIdentify one comfortable pattern in your life that maintains unjust systems.
Speaker APerhaps it's your habits of consumerism or some way that what you do by that exploits workers or a silence that enables discrimination, or community practices that exclude others intentionally disrupt that pattern in your own life, even if it creates tension.
Speaker ADocument the resistance you encounter and what it teaches you about systemic change.
Speaker AWe're going to come back and have a closing prayer here in a minute, but I want you to know that we do have an incredible resource for you.
Speaker AIt's called the ABC 123 Bible Study Guide.
