Speaker:Thank you so much for listening and let's get to the book recommendations.
Speaker:Hi, everyone.
Speaker:Welcome to novel nights.
Speaker:We're talking about magical realism books I'll be doing some
Speaker:women's fiction ebooks laura.
Speaker:What kind of books are you sharing today for magical realism?
Speaker:Listen laura always gives us the feel good books I have to tell y'all,
Speaker:I'm always looking forward to Laura.
Speaker:Cause she gives us those cozy feel good recommendations.
Speaker:I'm really excited to hear what she's sharing.
Speaker:So, today I'm going to talk about rom coms that are a little angsty, they're
Speaker:a little bit emotional, but not too emotional, they're perfect cozy reads.
Speaker:So, we're going to do some time crawling, we got some TV shows that we get to go
Speaker:enjoy, and we get some magical shots.
Speaker:So, the first book is The Seven Year Slip by Ashley Poston.
Speaker:Ashley has been a YA author for, for some time, but she started, she has
Speaker:been releasing adult rom coms about three years and so her books tend
Speaker:to touch upon a magical realism.
Speaker:I'm going to show you my two favorite books, but there's a
Speaker:ghost story if you want that.
Speaker:But this one, The Seven Year Slip, is a magical apartment.
Speaker:So there's a little read heroine is a overworked publicist,
Speaker:and she's just unhappy.
Speaker:She's just trying to figure out what she wants for her life.
Speaker:And she inherits her, her aunt's apartment and there's something
Speaker:about the apartment that's magical.
Speaker:Well, it turns out the apartment kind of travels.
Speaker:So she's like going to one place and then there's this one day there's a stranger
Speaker:in her house and it turns out that her aunt has has been traveling has been going
Speaker:on her life and she decided to sublet the apartment to this guy and so they're
Speaker:kind of like mixing together like the apartment just became magical so it turns
Speaker:out the people from previous tenants can see each other and can read emails and
Speaker:do stuff and there's a romance between the guy and her but they're in different
Speaker:timelines so when are they going to meet?
Speaker:How's it going to work?
Speaker:And you just have to keep reading and finding out.
Speaker:And it's just really good.
Speaker:It's a love letter to you.
Speaker:It's a love letter to the book world and to the idea of traveling and the idea
Speaker:of exploring your life beyond just what you think you should and trying to, and
Speaker:trying to overcome all these obstacles.
Speaker:So that's the seven year split.
Speaker:The second book is a novel love story, which is also Ashley Pearson's.
Speaker:This is last year's release.
Speaker:And this one, so she is a, I think she's, she's a college
Speaker:professor and she's driving around.
Speaker:She's she always looks forward to this reading retreat with her
Speaker:friends about this like series that they're like obsessed with.
Speaker:They are online friends and they tend to meet once, once a year in the
Speaker:cabin and the cocktails and they're just like, just read and enjoy.
Speaker:And the series that she's been following hasn't ended, like didn't end.
Speaker:There was like no ending because the author died.
Speaker:And so there's like no ending, there's no resolution, it's just, you
Speaker:know, unfortunately all the classes away and the story ends with her.
Speaker:And so she ended up, everyone ended up bailing in the retreat, and so she
Speaker:ended up driving in a snowbank, and somehow stumbles upon the town that the
Speaker:story that she's obsessed with is set.
Speaker:And all the characters in the story are living in this town, and she's stuck
Speaker:in a town because it's a snowstorm, she needs food, Like, her car's not
Speaker:working, and she's very attached to the car, and they need to get a car, but
Speaker:they have to wait for the car, because it's a bitch car, it's an old car.
Speaker:And so, she ended up going to the store, and she ended up going to the town, and
Speaker:ended up interacting with these people.
Speaker:And somehow the story started to shift, because of the way
Speaker:that she knew and interacted.
Speaker:And so she connects with the bookstore owner, and we don't know his story.
Speaker:But he's grumpy, and he was never in the story, but he was still in the story, so
Speaker:you just have to figure out the logistics.
Speaker:I know it doesn't make sense, I know it doesn't make sense in the
Speaker:end, like, how this is all gonna work out, but it always does.
Speaker:So that's the beauty of Ashley Post's work, there's something
Speaker:to be said, the hook is so high.
Speaker:But the reward is so good.
Speaker:So this is a novel love story.
Speaker:So if you like romance, if you like rom coms, this is a really like,
Speaker:like a, a love story to romance.
Speaker:And so it's a really good one for if you're a reader, there's like Easter eggs
Speaker:about other books and not just her books, but other books in the space of romance.
Speaker:So that's a novel love story.
Speaker:Now we're going to move into we're going to move into So
Speaker:magical realism and time travel.
Speaker:So the second chance here by Melissa Weissner is basically she's
Speaker:down, Sadie's down in her lush.
Speaker:She lost her job, her home, her boyfriend, and one disasterous year.
Speaker:And she goes to see a fortune teller who grants her a wish.
Speaker:So, wait, so she wakes up in January 1st, which is a year of the, she wakes
Speaker:up in January 1st of the previous year.
Speaker:So, she goes back one year, 10, 000 years back, and then she realizes she has to
Speaker:kind of like, uncover and redo her year.
Speaker:And so this is a process of like, what decisions do you make and
Speaker:those little things you do that are going to shift the year forward.
Speaker:And it's gonna hopefully avoid the mishap of missing your boyfriend, your
Speaker:home, your job, and everything else.
Speaker:So you fix the problems before they can become a problem.
Speaker:And so, there's a brother's best friend.
Speaker:She actually shares the impulsive kiss with Jacob.
Speaker:And it sets her on a path to rewriting her whole story all over again.
Speaker:So it's just a fun thing.
Speaker:It's a fun New Year's.
Speaker:I think we're still in January.
Speaker:Although it feels like January feels like month 12.
Speaker:Early January, this is like a fun New Year's luxury.
Speaker:There's a little bit of magicalism.
Speaker:There's some romance.
Speaker:We're in it.
Speaker:It's just fun.
Speaker:Just good.
Speaker:I do have an interview with Melissa because she does write magical realism.
Speaker:So there's actually, her follow up book actually also
Speaker:has magical realism elements.
Speaker:So it's kind of like fun but if you want to hear the backstory about
Speaker:these stories, you can check out her interview on Part 3 next podcast.
Speaker:The next one is The Red String Theory by Lauren Kong Jesson.
Speaker:So this one is, we're doing with Chinese mythology, so it's just
Speaker:kind of like fun to take on.
Speaker:So, Moony Gao is an artist inspired by Chinese legend, the Red String
Speaker:faith, again, like, you know, we're all tied together, we have faith.
Speaker:And so, she actually meets Jack, and they go on a magical date, but the problem
Speaker:is that Jack doesn't believe in love.
Speaker:The Red String Theory by Lauren Kong Jesson.
Speaker:And so every time they're, they're meant to be together, but every time he doubts
Speaker:it, it just takes that away from her.
Speaker:So her job is to try to make him believe in love.
Speaker:So it's just kind of like this idea of fate, idea of like destiny, are
Speaker:you meant to be together, are you not?
Speaker:And then the idea of like, do you believe in love?
Speaker:You know, literature do really love and so it's just like it's into inspiring
Speaker:for Chinese Novelity as well as like the love story element and just connecting
Speaker:with this idea Reminding them to be with someone This is a perfect,
Speaker:we're about to go to Lunar New Year, so this is a perfect book to read.
Speaker:So if you're looking for recommendations, I think this book, and Lauren has a
Speaker:couple books, she has more Lunar book.
Speaker:It's about Chinese zodiac and matchmaking, which is really fun.
Speaker:So I really love her books, and she has a new book coming out this year.
Speaker:So you got more than enough to read.
Speaker:I forgot, we are, oh, the next one, okay, sorry, I had been in the match together.
Speaker:So the next one is Primetime Romance by Kate Roth.
Speaker:This one is basically, imagine, this is millennial love of teenage soap opera.
Speaker:So think about yourself and you just absolutely love Joss White.
Speaker:We're going to Joss White because it's pretty much similar to this account.
Speaker:And you just hated the ending, which I did, because I did not like that ending.
Speaker:And you want to rewrite the ending.
Speaker:And so the ending, so basically.
Speaker:Our heroine is divorced.
Speaker:She's living with a roommate, like a random roommate, and somehow both her
Speaker:and her roommate end up in this town.
Speaker:They can't escape.
Speaker:They have to figure out all the characters from the, all the characters from the
Speaker:TV show are there and they're just like, like they're just acting, they're
Speaker:older, they're not in teenage years, or like they're in their 30s, and they're
Speaker:all acting like kind of similar or different and She finds herself that she
Speaker:has to rewrite the ending of the story.
Speaker:She has to rewrite the whole thing and try to figure it out.
Speaker:And in her world, she's playing the main character of the story.
Speaker:And she has to, in her world, in her idea, she has to end up with someone.
Speaker:But there's a little bit of a love triangle.
Speaker:So there's somebody else who might be interested.
Speaker:And so it's this whole process.
Speaker:And then her and the roommate are, basically, joining this town and
Speaker:acting as it because they cannot they cannot leave the town until
Speaker:the result is all getting resolved.
Speaker:So it is fun.
Speaker:I think she writes fan fiction, so this is like a fan fiction
Speaker:person who just, who just like basically got to rewrite the story.
Speaker:This is, I listened to this on audio.
Speaker:It's an excellent audio to listen to.
Speaker:If you love Dawson's Creek Publicity, any WVU shows, this book is for you.
Speaker:So this is just like a few thousand teenage dramas.
Speaker:I would just love to read it.
Speaker:So that's Primetime Rob, Primetime Romans by Kate Robb.
Speaker:Kate also has another book that spells love, that's another
Speaker:that's another magical realism.
Speaker:So the final book that I want to talk about is Déjà Vu by Celestine Martin.
Speaker:So this is a, this is a magical chap.
Speaker:So this chap actually has magical abilities that we can't read.
Speaker:And unfortunately, her magical abilities went away.
Speaker:And so her partner in crime, the love interest, has to go and find
Speaker:this check with this cookbook to help her restore her magical abilities.
Speaker:This is a cozy fall romance.
Speaker:There's this part of the series where you can read them as standalone.
Speaker:There's, so it's just like fun just to imagine.
Speaker:So if you like somebody who is a soul and you would like to have some magical
Speaker:checks and having the few, the few, the fewest of your feelings and your
Speaker:thoughts and your This book is for you.
Speaker:So that's Celestine Watt.
Speaker:Technology.
Speaker:Anyway, we are back.
Speaker:I love those pics.
Speaker:I'm here for teenage drama and super angsty kind of reads.
Speaker:So, that prime time, was it prime time?
Speaker:Yeah, that's prime time.
Speaker:But now the most important question is, were you a Pacey or a Dawson girl?
Speaker:We can continue being friends.
Speaker:I never watched it!
Speaker:I know, I know, Victoria.
Speaker:I'm like, okay, here comes the real test to our friendship.
Speaker:About Dawson Street, so Dawson Street aired in January, January, in 1998.
Speaker:So at the time I listened to the J Crew story, the History of J Crew,
Speaker:which is a fascinating book to read.
Speaker:They actually talk about the catalog because they, they were like, these
Speaker:are known kids, we are just gonna do, they're like the typical J crew.
Speaker:Yeah.
Speaker:Look.
Speaker:So we just got them to just do this catalog for us and
Speaker:then let's show exploded.
Speaker:And they're like, oh my gosh.
Speaker:It's like Dawson scree, like, you know, Dawson scree.
Speaker:It's like the original cross like co-sponsor show.
Speaker:Like, you know, you're just showing a catalog and you're like, oh my gosh.
Speaker:Now you can buy those power ups on Ebay, and they're actually online right now.
Speaker:Oh my god.
Speaker:Well, if you are watching live and you have a side in Dawson creep,
Speaker:like let us know in the chat.
Speaker:Okay.
Speaker:I haven't watched it.
Speaker:So I know nothing.
Speaker:I plead ignorance because also that deja vu sounds so
Speaker:much like simply irresistible.
Speaker:So I would say read that and then watch that because she also
Speaker:loses her powers in the movie.
Speaker:I'm like, let's put those two together.
Speaker:My brother says, I love Simply Resistible.
Speaker:I'm all about 90s rom coms.
Speaker:I'm surprised that we're not.
Speaker:So, I love Simply Resistible.
Speaker:I watched it multiple times whenever it was on air.
Speaker:I was like, oh my gosh, I need to watch this.
Speaker:And like, you just, you cry, and the food makes people cry, and you
Speaker:laugh, and people make you laugh.
Speaker:And I was like, oh my gosh, that's confusing.
Speaker:But you know what?
Speaker:It's true.
Speaker:If you choose love to plants, or if you choose love to
Speaker:food, the food tastes better.
Speaker:What's the difference between Rostov on Don and yourself, when
Speaker:you're just at home with girls?
Speaker:True, true, true.
Speaker:Can't fight that one there.
