I was horrified.
Speaker:The film says that
Speaker:Santa is not real,
Speaker:and the man
Speaker:claiming to be him
Speaker:is mentally ill.
Speaker:He's deranged,
Speaker:suffering from
Speaker:delusions. Oh,
Speaker:you're Santa. Are
Speaker:you prove it? I
Speaker:thought this is it.
Speaker:We're finished.
Speaker:You. Hello. I'm
Speaker:Katie Flamen.
Speaker:Welcome to
Speaker:storytelling for
Speaker:business, the
Speaker:podcast that helps
Speaker:you build better
Speaker:customer
Speaker:relationships by
Speaker:telling stories
Speaker:your clients want
Speaker:to hear. And here
Speaker:we are with our
Speaker:very special,
Speaker:festive episode.
Speaker:It's so good to be
Speaker:back. Since we last
Speaker:spoke, the podcast
Speaker:has had some
Speaker:amazing feedback,
Speaker:including three
Speaker:Award nominations,
Speaker:two at the voice
Speaker:Arts Awards in
Speaker:America and one at
Speaker:the UK's
Speaker:prestigious
Speaker:independent Podcast
Speaker:Awards. It is such
Speaker:a lovely
Speaker:endorsement of the
Speaker:show. I'm really
Speaker:grateful for that,
Speaker:and to you for
Speaker:listening and now,
Speaker:of course, watching
Speaker:in this podcast,
Speaker:we're on a mission
Speaker:together to explore
Speaker:the power of
Speaker:storytelling and
Speaker:figure out what it
Speaker:can do for your
Speaker:business. How can
Speaker:telling stories
Speaker:possibly lead to
Speaker:well, leads, and
Speaker:how can talking
Speaker:about your fears,
Speaker:your failures, your
Speaker:mess ups, build
Speaker:client
Speaker:relationships that
Speaker:last you want to
Speaker:get your message
Speaker:across and be
Speaker:remembered. And
Speaker:that is not easy.
Speaker:This podcast
Speaker:investigates how to
Speaker:do it. I talk to
Speaker:creatives who helps
Speaker:CEOs figure out
Speaker:what their story is
Speaker:and how to share it
Speaker:in scroll stopping
Speaker:unignorable ways,
Speaker:telling that's a
Speaker:real word. Never
Speaker:mind. I also talk
Speaker:to regular business
Speaker:owners too about
Speaker:what they do and
Speaker:how they do it.
Speaker:I've chatted to
Speaker:loads of lovely
Speaker:people. Please
Speaker:check out previous
Speaker:episodes, there's a
Speaker:vet, a charity
Speaker:boss, a Bucha, a
Speaker:wide range of
Speaker:business owners,
Speaker:but they all have
Speaker:one thing in
Speaker:common. They're all
Speaker:harnessing the
Speaker:power of authentic
Speaker:storytelling to
Speaker:build their brands
Speaker:and their bank
Speaker:balance. And today,
Speaker:I've got a really
Speaker:special guest for
Speaker:you, who's joining
Speaker:us at her busiest
Speaker:time of year. I've
Speaker:taught for quite
Speaker:long enough. So
Speaker:welcome to the
Speaker:show. Please
Speaker:introduce yourself
Speaker:and tell everybody
Speaker:who you are and
Speaker:what you do. Hello,
Speaker:Katie, thanks for
Speaker:having me. I'm
Speaker:Holly tinsel. I'm
Speaker:the Chief Operating
Speaker:Officer at Santa
Speaker:incorporated based
Speaker:at the North Pole.
Speaker:It's such a treat
Speaker:to be here as your
Speaker:festive guest on
Speaker:storytelling for
Speaker:business. So
Speaker:excited. Where do
Speaker:you want to start?
Speaker:Well, we would love
Speaker:to know all about
Speaker:you, Holly. So
Speaker:let's start at the
Speaker:beginning. How did
Speaker:you come to work
Speaker:with Santa? Well, I
Speaker:worked my way up
Speaker:through the ranks.
Speaker:Basically I joined
Speaker:as an intern 20
Speaker:something years
Speaker:ago, and I loved
Speaker:it, because I got
Speaker:to experience all
Speaker:aspects of Santa's
Speaker:business. I was
Speaker:particularly
Speaker:passionate about
Speaker:branding and
Speaker:marketing side of
Speaker:things, and I spent
Speaker:10 years in that
Speaker:department. So I
Speaker:jumped at the
Speaker:chance to talk to
Speaker:you, Katie, because
Speaker:we obsessed about
Speaker:storytelling in
Speaker:that department,
Speaker:and rightly so,
Speaker:because the power
Speaker:of story, it's so
Speaker:important to
Speaker:everybody's
Speaker:business, but to
Speaker:ours. I think in
Speaker:particular, can you
Speaker:tell us a bit more
Speaker:about that? What do
Speaker:you mean? Exactly
Speaker:sure. Sans brand
Speaker:his story, it's so
Speaker:much more than red
Speaker:and white brand
Speaker:colors or a jolly
Speaker:guy with a beard,
Speaker:that version of the
Speaker:brand you might
Speaker:know it was created
Speaker:by Coca Cola
Speaker:advertising in 1931
Speaker:but course, sand
Speaker:has been a legend
Speaker:for a lot longer
Speaker:than that. He just
Speaker:didn't have his
Speaker:brand story, saw
Speaker:it. Can you explain
Speaker:what you mean by
Speaker:that? Well before
Speaker:the 30s, there were
Speaker:many different
Speaker:depictions of Santa
Speaker:Claus around the
Speaker:world. There was a
Speaker:tall, gaunt man and
Speaker:an elf. There was
Speaker:even a scary claws.
Speaker:But Santa's
Speaker:purpose, the
Speaker:purpose of Santa
Speaker:incorporate it too
Speaker:has always shone
Speaker:through. Santa's
Speaker:purpose is to
Speaker:represent the
Speaker:spirit of Christmas
Speaker:and the values that
Speaker:go with that
Speaker:goodwill, sharing,
Speaker:love, forgiveness
Speaker:and equality. It's
Speaker:a trusted brand.
Speaker:Santa's probably
Speaker:the one of the most
Speaker:famous people on
Speaker:the planet, right?
Speaker:And we use story to
Speaker:get the Santa
Speaker:purpose and brand
Speaker:message in front of
Speaker:our audience. And
Speaker:course, our
Speaker:audience is kids,
Speaker:children all over
Speaker:the world, and
Speaker:those kids need to
Speaker:know that they're
Speaker:seeing. Mean they
Speaker:are special and
Speaker:they're loved.
Speaker:Holly, you said
Speaker:Santa's been a
Speaker:legend for a long
Speaker:time, and we all
Speaker:know that. Can you
Speaker:tell us a bit about
Speaker:his origin story?
Speaker:Of course. So
Speaker:Santa's story
Speaker:originates in
Speaker:Europe, long before
Speaker:the symbol of
Speaker:Father Christmas
Speaker:emerged in England.
Speaker:The separate Legend
Speaker:of sinter class was
Speaker:gaining ground in
Speaker:Europe. The origins
Speaker:of sinter class can
Speaker:be found in the
Speaker:stories of St
Speaker:Nicholas, who was a
Speaker:fourth century
Speaker:Greek Bishop from
Speaker:Myra, which is now
Speaker:in modern day,
Speaker:Turkey. And St
Speaker:Nicholas was
Speaker:credited with
Speaker:performing a wide
Speaker:variety of
Speaker:miracles. And of
Speaker:course, we all know
Speaker:that hundreds of
Speaker:years later, that
Speaker:magic is still
Speaker:going strong today.
Speaker:So Holly, we've
Speaker:covered Santa's
Speaker:origin story and
Speaker:authentic brand
Speaker:story, which is
Speaker:obviously really
Speaker:important to the
Speaker:business. But then
Speaker:I'm interested to
Speaker:talk a bit about
Speaker:the other stories
Speaker:around Santa,
Speaker:because there are
Speaker:books and songs and
Speaker:goodness knows how
Speaker:many films with
Speaker:Santa in them. And
Speaker:in those cases,
Speaker:story isn't under
Speaker:your control. Is
Speaker:it? Santa
Speaker:Incorporated, has
Speaker:no power over that
Speaker:story, and
Speaker:sometimes those
Speaker:stories don't show
Speaker:Santa in a very
Speaker:favorable light.
Speaker:I'm thinking of an
Speaker:Ella Fitzgerald
Speaker:song, and I think
Speaker:it's also a kid's
Speaker:song that a fat
Speaker:shaming Santa when
Speaker:he gets stuck in
Speaker:the chimney, and a
Speaker:classic movie
Speaker:Miracle on 34th
Speaker:Street springs to
Speaker:mind as well, where
Speaker:he's accused of
Speaker:suffering from
Speaker:delusions and he
Speaker:has to go to court
Speaker:to prove that He is
Speaker:real. So how does
Speaker:Santa Inc cope with
Speaker:those kinds of
Speaker:negative stories?
Speaker:Well, we do have a
Speaker:busy PR department,
Speaker:but actually, those
Speaker:examples are
Speaker:interesting because
Speaker:they show
Speaker:vulnerability.
Speaker:Like, yeah, Santa
Speaker:is not a slim
Speaker:gentleman, but
Speaker:there are plenty of
Speaker:svelte young
Speaker:superheroes out
Speaker:there for kids to
Speaker:admire. That's what
Speaker:comic books and
Speaker:Marvel movies are
Speaker:for, right? But not
Speaker:so many overweight
Speaker:grandparent type
Speaker:figures, but Santa
Speaker:is a great role
Speaker:model. Because of
Speaker:that, you don't
Speaker:have to be skinny
Speaker:to be one of the
Speaker:good guys, and you
Speaker:don't have to get
Speaker:it right all the
Speaker:time either.
Speaker:Sometimes Santa
Speaker:gets a bit stuck,
Speaker:but don't we all
Speaker:those things make
Speaker:him very human and
Speaker:very relatable, as
Speaker:for Miracle on 34th
Speaker:Street. The first
Speaker:version of that
Speaker:movie was released
Speaker:in, I think, 1947
Speaker:so a little bit
Speaker:before my time. But
Speaker:I'll never forget,
Speaker:when I saw the
Speaker:trailer for the
Speaker:remake in 1994 I
Speaker:was horrified. The
Speaker:film says that
Speaker:Santa is not real,
Speaker:and the man
Speaker:claiming to be him
Speaker:is mentally ill.
Speaker:He's deranged,
Speaker:suffering from
Speaker:delusions. Oh,
Speaker:you're Santa. Are
Speaker:you prove it? I
Speaker:thought, This is
Speaker:it. We're finished.
Speaker:But I was wrong.
Speaker:That negative
Speaker:storyline actually
Speaker:ended up turning
Speaker:into a positive and
Speaker:strengthening
Speaker:Santa's brand in
Speaker:the end. Do you
Speaker:think there's a
Speaker:lesson in there for
Speaker:other businesses?
Speaker:Absolutely, things
Speaker:go wrong in
Speaker:business all the
Speaker:time, like the
Speaker:chimney thing, and
Speaker:as a business
Speaker:owner, you just
Speaker:have to pick
Speaker:yourself up and be
Speaker:honest if you make
Speaker:a mistake,
Speaker:apologize if
Speaker:necessary, and do
Speaker:all you can to make
Speaker:amends. Like for
Speaker:us, the most
Speaker:important thing is
Speaker:not disappointing
Speaker:children. We are
Speaker:their festive
Speaker:service provider,
Speaker:and they are our
Speaker:trusting audience.
Speaker:So if we make a
Speaker:mistake, we say
Speaker:sorry, and we make
Speaker:it better. And we
Speaker:have to accept that
Speaker:often we can't
Speaker:control the
Speaker:narrative, so we
Speaker:just have to stay
Speaker:calm, face the fear
Speaker:and move through
Speaker:it. I think
Speaker:fundamentally, any
Speaker:business wants
Speaker:their story to be
Speaker:re, shared and
Speaker:retold, and as long
Speaker:as your core brand
Speaker:is solid
Speaker:underneath, it's
Speaker:probably all good
Speaker:publicity in the
Speaker:end, brilliant
Speaker:advice. Okay, so
Speaker:you are second in
Speaker:command at Santa,
Speaker:incorporated at the
Speaker:top of the
Speaker:organization. So
Speaker:what does being coo
Speaker:there involve?
Speaker:Well, as the COO,
Speaker:I'm responsible for
Speaker:overseeing the day
Speaker:to day operations
Speaker:of everything we do
Speaker:at the North Pole.
Speaker:Part of my job is
Speaker:reporting directly
Speaker:to Nick Santa
Speaker:himself. Ha.
Speaker:And managing and
Speaker:motivating the
Speaker:staff. They work
Speaker:across a lot of
Speaker:different areas of
Speaker:the business, and
Speaker:it's my role to
Speaker:implement
Speaker:strategies to make
Speaker:sure everything's
Speaker:working well
Speaker:together. So for
Speaker:example, there's
Speaker:the data collection
Speaker:and analysis that
Speaker:making sure every
Speaker:child that writes
Speaker:to Santa gets their
Speaker:letter read and
Speaker:naughty and
Speaker:correctly actioned.
Speaker:And from that comes
Speaker:the naughty list
Speaker:and the nice list,
Speaker:which are updated
Speaker:24/7, there's
Speaker:another team
Speaker:working on those
Speaker:all year round. Oh,
Speaker:so it's not just a
Speaker:seasonal operation,
Speaker:then, not at all.
Speaker:Our manufacturing
Speaker:arm is extremely
Speaker:busy all the time,
Speaker:but everyone takes
Speaker:the whole of August
Speaker:off. That's a nod
Speaker:to our European
Speaker:roots. So we shut
Speaker:down the toy
Speaker:workshops, the
Speaker:factories and the
Speaker:staff all take a
Speaker:break. I'm guessing
Speaker:Logistics is
Speaker:probably a big part
Speaker:of your job.
Speaker:Everything's a
Speaker:logistical puzzle.
Speaker:We're a global toy
Speaker:manufacturing and
Speaker:toy distribution
Speaker:operation and
Speaker:distribution is a
Speaker:massive part of it
Speaker:all for us, we only
Speaker:get one chance to
Speaker:get that right one
Speaker:night. And even
Speaker:with magic, it is a
Speaker:huge undertaking to
Speaker:get every gift to
Speaker:every child, the
Speaker:correct home
Speaker:correctly in just
Speaker:one night. It's not
Speaker:long. What's it
Speaker:like to work there?
Speaker:Holly, I love it.
Speaker:Honestly. I'm proud
Speaker:of what we do. I
Speaker:can't imagine ever
Speaker:working anywhere
Speaker:else. We have a
Speaker:beautiful, diverse
Speaker:workforce. There
Speaker:are magical folk,
Speaker:humans, reindeer,
Speaker:and everyone is
Speaker:treated with
Speaker:respect. Every
Speaker:voice matters, and
Speaker:I learn something
Speaker:new every day from
Speaker:my colleagues. It's
Speaker:very important to
Speaker:us to have a
Speaker:positive workplace
Speaker:culture. We work
Speaker:hard at that.
Speaker:Everyone knows the
Speaker:elf. Business
Speaker:values efficiency,
Speaker:loyalty and
Speaker:fairness. You
Speaker:probably heard of
Speaker:Santa's elfs. Well,
Speaker:that's what that's
Speaker:all about. And we
Speaker:seek anonymous
Speaker:staff feedback, and
Speaker:it is
Speaker:overwhelmingly
Speaker:positive, and if
Speaker:there are concerns,
Speaker:we act. I really
Speaker:believe in our
Speaker:business values,
Speaker:and I'm just so
Speaker:happy and proud to
Speaker:work at Santa
Speaker:incorporated and
Speaker:make a positive
Speaker:difference to
Speaker:people's lives and
Speaker:give them memories
Speaker:to treasure. I
Speaker:don't know how many
Speaker:other businesses
Speaker:offer that, and I'm
Speaker:really, really
Speaker:grateful to work
Speaker:where I do. What a
Speaker:wonderful
Speaker:endorsement. Holly.
Speaker:Thank you so much
Speaker:for sharing all of
Speaker:that amazing
Speaker:information. And
Speaker:there's so much in
Speaker:there that's
Speaker:relevant to regular
Speaker:business owners too
Speaker:well, I better let
Speaker:you go. I know this
Speaker:is a really busy
Speaker:time of year for
Speaker:you, and I really,
Speaker:really appreciate
Speaker:you joining me on
Speaker:the podcast. So
Speaker:Holly tinsel. Thank
Speaker:you so much for
Speaker:joining us. You're
Speaker:so welcome. Thank
Speaker:you so much for
Speaker:having me. Katie
Speaker:and Merry
Speaker:Christmas. Wow,
Speaker:what a woman. She
Speaker:reminded me of
Speaker:somebody I'm not
Speaker:quite sure who, but
Speaker:something very
Speaker:familiar about her.
Speaker:There was so much
Speaker:to take from that
Speaker:conversation that
Speaker:you can use in your
Speaker:business, as I just
Speaker:said to Holly. So
Speaker:let us recap
Speaker:today's key
Speaker:takeaways. And you
Speaker:know me, you've got
Speaker:to have an acronym,
Speaker:right? Today's, of
Speaker:course, is S A N T,
Speaker:a Santa, s, let's
Speaker:start. There is for
Speaker:storytelling. Not
Speaker:only should you be
Speaker:telling your own
Speaker:stories, you want
Speaker:stories to be told
Speaker:about you and your
Speaker:business. Holly
Speaker:reminded us that
Speaker:all the stories
Speaker:that about Santa in
Speaker:films, books,
Speaker:songs, the whole
Speaker:bit, they become
Speaker:one multi layered
Speaker:narrative. Even
Speaker:when you can't
Speaker:control the story
Speaker:you're in or it
Speaker:feels negative, you
Speaker:can still own it
Speaker:and move through
Speaker:it, even if it's
Speaker:difficult.
Speaker:Ultimately, all
Speaker:those Santa stories
Speaker:work together to
Speaker:reinforce Santa's
Speaker:reputation and
Speaker:build the Santa
Speaker:brand. Okay, A is
Speaker:for authenticity,
Speaker:even when things
Speaker:don't go smoothly.
Speaker:Holly reminded us
Speaker:that Santa is
Speaker:always
Speaker:authentically
Speaker:himself. Poor guy's
Speaker:had his fair share
Speaker:of challenges, from
Speaker:gymnas to
Speaker:courtrooms, but
Speaker:when times get
Speaker:tough, he stays
Speaker:true to his purpose
Speaker:of spreading joy
Speaker:and never letting
Speaker:his customers down.
Speaker:Everyone knows that
Speaker:Santa is one of the
Speaker:good guys. N It's
Speaker:for North Pole.
Speaker:Wasn't it
Speaker:inspiring? To hear
Speaker:about Santa's HQ at
Speaker:the North Pole, how
Speaker:Holly and Santa
Speaker:manage that diverse
Speaker:workforce, how they
Speaker:promote the
Speaker:positive workplace
Speaker:culture through
Speaker:their elf elf
Speaker:business values,
Speaker:efficiency, loyalty
Speaker:and fairness. Is
Speaker:your office like
Speaker:that? If it is, why
Speaker:not share stories
Speaker:about it? And if
Speaker:there isn't, is
Speaker:there anything you
Speaker:could do to improve
Speaker:conditions for your
Speaker:staff? Maybe let
Speaker:your staff tell
Speaker:their stories.
Speaker:Okay, tea is for
Speaker:toys. Santa's toy
Speaker:distribution
Speaker:operation is a
Speaker:masterpiece of
Speaker:global logistics.
Speaker:Maybe you've got a
Speaker:story about how you
Speaker:managed to deliver
Speaker:for your customers,
Speaker:against the odds,
Speaker:why not share it?
Speaker:And that last A is
Speaker:for audience. Santa
Speaker:and his team know
Speaker:their audience
Speaker:inside out. You
Speaker:know exactly what
Speaker:kids want, not only
Speaker:from the individual
Speaker:letters they
Speaker:receive, but from
Speaker:ongoing market
Speaker:research, which
Speaker:informs the nice
Speaker:list and the
Speaker:dreaded naughty
Speaker:list. Santa gives
Speaker:gifts that make
Speaker:everyone feel seen
Speaker:and special. Do
Speaker:your customers feel
Speaker:like that about
Speaker:your business? If
Speaker:they do get those
Speaker:five star reviews
Speaker:and share those
Speaker:stories? Well, now
Speaker:I've got to go. My
Speaker:presents won't wrap
Speaker:themselves, and
Speaker:honestly, I think
Speaker:it's about time for
Speaker:a cup of tea and a
Speaker:mince pie. Oh, I
Speaker:almost forgot,
Speaker:though, I've got a
Speaker:gift for you,
Speaker:season three of
Speaker:storytelling for
Speaker:business. Woo. It's
Speaker:not gonna be ready
Speaker:by Christmas Eve,
Speaker:unfortunately, but
Speaker:you will be able to
Speaker:enjoy it soon. It's
Speaker:another bumper
Speaker:bonanza of business
Speaker:boosting content
Speaker:from the biggest,
Speaker:brightest and best
Speaker:storytelling
Speaker:experts. Make sure
Speaker:you subscribe so
Speaker:you don't miss it
Speaker:when it drops. And
Speaker:if you've enjoyed
Speaker:this episode, and
Speaker:if you don't mind,
Speaker:please take a
Speaker:minute to leave me
Speaker:a holiday gift. I'd
Speaker:love a podcast
Speaker:review. Thank you.
Speaker:Thanks so much for
Speaker:your company. It's
Speaker:been so much fun
Speaker:recording this
Speaker:episode. I'm Katie
Speaker:flammon and
Speaker:sometimes some
Speaker:other people too,
Speaker:and this is
Speaker:storytelling for
Speaker:business until next
Speaker:time. Goodbye. You
