Liberation from the demons of society A reflection on Luke 8:26 39 on the Daily Bible refresh with Dr.
Speaker ABrad Miller hello good people.
Speaker AWelcome to Daily Bible Refresh with Dr.
Speaker ABrad Miller.
Speaker AThank you for joining me in my mission to get the audible word of God into 2 million years, a million people by 2028.
Speaker AWe do that by daily reading of the New Testament.
Speaker AWe use a Revised Common Lectionary.
Speaker AThat's a three year cycle of the daily reading for this very day.
Speaker AWe're in year C of that cycle in the Pentecost season.
Speaker AWe make the reading of the Bible understandable.
Speaker AWe use the message version relatable.
Speaker AWe give some points to ponder applicable will give you an action step to head take for prayer.
Speaker AWe do all that in under 10 minutes or so.
Speaker AIt's all brought to you by voiceofgoddaily.com that's the home of the ABC 1, 2, 3 Bible study method to help you in your life.
Speaker ALet's get into our reading for the day from Luke 8:26 39 from the Message the Madman and the Pigs they sailed on to the country of Gerannisus, directly opposite of Galilee.
Speaker AAs he stepped out into land, a madman from town met him and he was a victim of demons.
Speaker AHe hadn't worn clothes for a long time, nor lived at home.
Speaker AHe lived in the cemetery.
Speaker AWhen he saw Jesus, he screamed, fell before him, and howled.
Speaker AWhat business do you have messing with me?
Speaker AYou're Jesus, son of the High God, but don't give me a hard time.
Speaker AThis man said this because Jesus had started to order the unclean spirit out of him, and time after time the demon threw the man into convulsions.
Speaker AHe had been placed under constant guard and tied with chains and shackles, but crazed and driven wild by the demon, he would shatter the bonds, and Jesus asked him, what is your name?
Speaker AMob?
Speaker AMy name is Mob, he said, because many demons afflicted him, and they begged Jesus desperately not to order them to the bottomless pit.
Speaker AA large herd of pigs was grazing and rooting on a nearby hill.
Speaker AThe demons begged Jesus to order them into the pigs.
Speaker AHe gave the order.
Speaker AIt was even worse for the pigs than for the man.
Speaker ACrazed, they stampeded over a cliff into a lake and drowned.
Speaker AThose tending the pigs, scared to death, bolted and told their story.
Speaker AIn town and in the country, people went out to see what had happened.
Speaker AThey came to Jesus and found the man from whom the demons had been sent, sitting there at Jesus feet, wearing decent clothes and making sense.
Speaker AIt was a holy moment and For a short time, they were more reverent than curious.
Speaker AThen those who had seen it happen told how the demonic had been saved.
Speaker ALater, a great many people from the Gerasene countryside got together and asked Jesus to leave.
Speaker AToo much changed too fast and they were scared.
Speaker ASo Jesus got back in the boat and set off.
Speaker AThe man whom he had delivered from the demons asked to go with him.
Speaker ABut he sent him back saying, go home and tell everybody God did.
Speaker AWhat God, everything God did in you.
Speaker ASo he went back and preached all over town everything Jesus had done in him.
Speaker AWell, in today's reflection we are exploring this story about healing and social stigma and community resistance to transformative change.
Speaker ALet's talk about some points to ponder.
Speaker AThe first is about understanding modern demons.
Speaker AIn progressive theology, we might view this story through the lens of social and systemic oppression.
Speaker AThe demons that possess this man could represent the intersecting forces that marginalize people today.
Speaker AMental health stigma, poverty, social isolation, systematic violence.
Speaker AThe man lived among tombs, literally pushed to society's margins, much like many experiencing homelessness or mental health challenges today.
Speaker AA second point is about the politics of healing.
Speaker ANotice how the community responds to healing is fear and rejection.
Speaker AWhen Jesus disrupts the status quo by healing this man, the economic impact that is the lost pigs and social disruption lead people to ask Jesus to leave.
Speaker AThis mirrors how society often resists changes that challenge economic interests, even when those changes bring healing and justice.
Speaker AAnother point is about reclaiming dignity and voice.
Speaker AThe transformation includes clothing, community presence and the ability to make sense to others.
Speaker ABut most importantly, the man finds his voice and is commissioned to tell his own story.
Speaker AThis reminds us that true liberation isn't about fixing problems, but about restoring agency and dignity to those who have been silenced.
Speaker AHere's your action step this week.
Speaker AIdentify one way your community marginalizes people struggling with mental health, homelessness or other stigmatized conditions.
Speaker ATake one concrete action to challenge this exclusion, whether through advocacy, direct support, or challenging discriminatory practices in your institutions.
Speaker AWe'll come back with a closing prayer in just a minute.
Speaker AJust a reminder that we have a great resource for you to help you with your in home Bible study.

Speaker AWe confess that we too often choose comfort over transformation, profit over people, silence over justice.
Speaker AHelp us recognize the demons of our time, the systems that exclude, the prejudices that bind, the fears that isolate.
Speaker AGive us courage to welcome change even when it disrupts our economy, even when it challenges our comfort, even when it transforms our community.
Speaker ARemind us that every person has a story worth hearing, a dignity worth protecting, a voice worth amplifying.
Speaker AMay we become people who choose liberation over control, community over comfort, love over fear.
