Thank you for joining me in my mission to get the audible word of God into 2 million years, a million people by 2028.

Speaker A

We do that by daily reading of the New Testament.

Speaker A

We use a Revised Common Lectionary.

Speaker A

That's a three year cycle of the daily reading for this very day.

Speaker A

We're in year C of that cycle in the Pentecost season.

Speaker A

We make the reading of the Bible understandable.

Speaker A

We use the message version relatable.

Speaker A

We give some points to ponder applicable will give you an action step to head take for prayer.

Speaker A

We do all that in under 10 minutes or so.

Speaker A

It's all brought to you by voiceofgoddaily.com that's the home of the ABC 1, 2, 3 Bible study method to help you in your life.

Speaker A

Let's get into our reading for the day from Luke 8:26 39 from the Message the Madman and the Pigs they sailed on to the country of Gerannisus, directly opposite of Galilee.

Speaker A

As he stepped out into land, a madman from town met him and he was a victim of demons.

Speaker A

He hadn't worn clothes for a long time, nor lived at home.

Speaker A

He lived in the cemetery.

Speaker A

When he saw Jesus, he screamed, fell before him, and howled.

Speaker A

What business do you have messing with me?

Speaker A

You're Jesus, son of the High God, but don't give me a hard time.

Speaker A

This man said this because Jesus had started to order the unclean spirit out of him, and time after time the demon threw the man into convulsions.

Speaker A

He had been placed under constant guard and tied with chains and shackles, but crazed and driven wild by the demon, he would shatter the bonds, and Jesus asked him, what is your name?

Speaker A

Mob?

Speaker A

My name is Mob, he said, because many demons afflicted him, and they begged Jesus desperately not to order them to the bottomless pit.

Speaker A

A large herd of pigs was grazing and rooting on a nearby hill.

Speaker A

The demons begged Jesus to order them into the pigs.

Speaker A

He gave the order.

Speaker A

It was even worse for the pigs than for the man.

Speaker A

Crazed, they stampeded over a cliff into a lake and drowned.

Speaker A

Those tending the pigs, scared to death, bolted and told their story.

Speaker A

In town and in the country, people went out to see what had happened.

Speaker A

They came to Jesus and found the man from whom the demons had been sent, sitting there at Jesus feet, wearing decent clothes and making sense.

Speaker A

It was a holy moment and For a short time, they were more reverent than curious.

Speaker A

Then those who had seen it happen told how the demonic had been saved.

Speaker A

Later, a great many people from the Gerasene countryside got together and asked Jesus to leave.

Speaker A

Too much changed too fast and they were scared.

Speaker A

So Jesus got back in the boat and set off.

Speaker A

The man whom he had delivered from the demons asked to go with him.

Speaker A

But he sent him back saying, go home and tell everybody God did.

Speaker A

What God, everything God did in you.

Speaker A

So he went back and preached all over town everything Jesus had done in him.

Speaker A

Well, in today's reflection we are exploring this story about healing and social stigma and community resistance to transformative change.

Speaker A

Let's talk about some points to ponder.

Speaker A

The first is about understanding modern demons.

Speaker A

In progressive theology, we might view this story through the lens of social and systemic oppression.

Speaker A

The demons that possess this man could represent the intersecting forces that marginalize people today.

Speaker A

Mental health stigma, poverty, social isolation, systematic violence.

Speaker A

The man lived among tombs, literally pushed to society's margins, much like many experiencing homelessness or mental health challenges today.

Speaker A

A second point is about the politics of healing.

Speaker A

Notice how the community responds to healing is fear and rejection.

Speaker A

When Jesus disrupts the status quo by healing this man, the economic impact that is the lost pigs and social disruption lead people to ask Jesus to leave.

Speaker A

This mirrors how society often resists changes that challenge economic interests, even when those changes bring healing and justice.

Speaker A

Another point is about reclaiming dignity and voice.

Speaker A

The transformation includes clothing, community presence and the ability to make sense to others.

Speaker A

But most importantly, the man finds his voice and is commissioned to tell his own story.

Speaker A

This reminds us that true liberation isn't about fixing problems, but about restoring agency and dignity to those who have been silenced.

Speaker A

Here's your action step this week.

Speaker A

Identify one way your community marginalizes people struggling with mental health, homelessness or other stigmatized conditions.

Speaker A

Take one concrete action to challenge this exclusion, whether through advocacy, direct support, or challenging discriminatory practices in your institutions.

Speaker A

We'll come back with a closing prayer in just a minute.

Speaker A

Just a reminder that we have a great resource for you to help you with your in home Bible study.

The ABC 1, 2, 3 Bible Study Method.

Speaker A

Let's pray.

Speaker A

Oh God, you are a God of the margins.

Speaker A

We confess that we too often choose comfort over transformation, profit over people, silence over justice.

Speaker A

Help us recognize the demons of our time, the systems that exclude, the prejudices that bind, the fears that isolate.

Speaker A

Give us courage to welcome change even when it disrupts our economy, even when it challenges our comfort, even when it transforms our community.

Speaker A

Remind us that every person has a story worth hearing, a dignity worth protecting, a voice worth amplifying.

Speaker A

May we become people who choose liberation over control, community over comfort, love over fear.

Speaker A

Amen.
