Speaker BAlso, dig into life, pop culture, and the chaos that is our everyday.
Speaker BI'm Jay Schedelson.
Speaker BLet's do this, not that.
Speaker AWe are here for Ask Us anything from the do this not that podcast.
Speaker AThis is the episode where all week long we get in work questions and we get in ridiculous questions.
Speaker AWe try to tackle one of each.
Speaker AAnd if you want to submit a question, it's really easy.
Speaker AYou just go to jschwettleson.com and you look for the podcast button and there's another button that says ask us anything.
Speaker AAnd you could submit, I mean anything.
Speaker AWe get wild stuff in.
Speaker ASo let's jump into it.
Speaker AFirst, let's do the work question.
Speaker AWe got a question from Dale from Forks, Washington.
Speaker AI know Forks, Washington because I'm a big loser.
Speaker ABecause that is the setting for the Twilight Saga movies, which has got to be so annoying.
Speaker ASo if you live there, right?
Speaker AAnd before the Twilight vampire movies all came out, you're like, oh, I like where I live.
Speaker AIt's pretty chill, it's pretty cool.
Speaker AAnd then the movie hits and now everybody, that's all they know.
Speaker AI don't know anything else about Forks, Washington except the Twilight movies.
Speaker AAnd yeah, that stinks.
Speaker ABut anyway, Dale, what's your question?
Speaker AOkay, Jay, we just changed our marketing offer from 30% off to 50% off and the campaign actually did worse.
Speaker AWhy do you think that is?
Speaker AWell, that's a super interesting question, interesting topic and it really gets to counterintuitive findings and offers and review data and data in general.
Speaker ASo I got some super interesting stats to share in this one.
Speaker ASo sometimes when you're, when your discount on your offer is too large, the value, we perceive it to be kind of garbage, right?
Speaker AIf you're in the mall and you see, okay, these shoes are 25% off and these shoes are 60% off.
Speaker AWhen you see the 60% off, you're like, yeah, I don't know about that.
Speaker AMaybe nobody else liked it.
Speaker AI don't think I want to check it out.
Speaker ASo World Data Research had some cool data on this related to offers within emails.
Speaker ASo emails offering discounts of 20 to 35% had a 30% higher average click through rate than offers with discounts over 50%.
Speaker ATotally counterintuitive.
Speaker AAnd you'll be like, wait a Minute.
Speaker ABut of course you want the bigger discount.
Speaker ABut no, we think sometimes that the bigger discount means it's garbage, it's not as good of quality, nobody else wanted it.
Speaker ASo just by upping your discount does not mean you're going to up the amount of people that are responding to it.
Speaker ANow the other area of data that is even crazier to me has to do with reviews, when people leave reviews and whatnot.
Speaker ASo the first thing is, how do we all interact with reviews?
Speaker AWe're on sites.
Speaker AAnd this is important because you need to understand this as people are giving you reviews, whether you're a business marketer or consumer marketer.
Speaker AFirst off, I don't know if you do what I do, but I always look at negative reviews first.
Speaker ARight?
Speaker AIf there's 500 views, I want to look at the one star.
Speaker AI want to know what people didn't like about the thing.
Speaker AI don't need to hear everyone telling me how great the thing is.
Speaker ABut that has nothing to do with anything.
Speaker ABut here's some data I thought was interesting.
Speaker AOkay, um, according to online reviews, this is.
Speaker AThat's their name.
Speaker A70% of people use rating filters when searching for different businesses.
Speaker AA rating filter is when you click on a certain level of the ratings and you want to see what people are saying.
Speaker AThe most common filter applied of course is to see companies with four star ratings and above.
Speaker ARight?
Speaker ASo if you don't at least have four stars or on whatever it is, your product, your service, whatever, you're in trouble.
Speaker ABut what's super wild is that only 10% of consumers check the five star rating.
Speaker APeople don't really look at that five star rating.
Speaker AThey almost don't believe it's true.
Speaker ABut even more important than that, forget about that.
Speaker AAccording to research by Northwestern, the university, this is wild.
Speaker APurchases are most influenced by reviews with an average rating of 4.2 to 4.5 out of 5 stars.
Speaker AThis is actually the ideal average star rating to drive purchases.
Speaker ABecause what they're saying here is that consumers perceive ratings that are five stars.
Speaker AThey're too good to be true.
Speaker AAnd this is totally counterintuitive.
Speaker ASo if you have 300 reviews and they're all five stars, people are going to buy your product less than if you had 300 reviews and your rating was somewhere between 4.2 to 4.5 stars.
Speaker ABecause it is more believable.
Speaker AIt's not some sort of things where people just think is a bunch of fake reviews.
Speaker ASo that's pretty mind blowing data.
Speaker ABecause if all you have is five star reviews.
Speaker AIt doesn't mean you want to go out there and get people to hate your product, but it actually could be holding you back.
Speaker AAnother interesting thing about pricing is this data that was put out there by Jonah Berger, who's a marketing professor and is a best selling book about pricing.
Speaker AAnd he created something called the rule of 100, which is pretty wild.
Speaker ASo for products over $100, if your product costs over $100, business or consumer, a dollar discount is more effective.
Speaker ABut if your product is under $100, then a percentage discount is more effective.
Speaker ASo 10% off of a $50 bathing suit sounds better to buyers than that being $5 off, even though it's the same thing.
Speaker AOr a dollar off discount works better for items priced over $100.
Speaker ASo on a thousand dollars computer, people are more likely to buy that when they receive $200 off rather than a 20% discount.
Speaker ASo you really have to think about how you are articulating your discounts depending on the cost of your product or your service.
Speaker ANow, it's not one size fits all.
Speaker AAll right, before we get to the ridiculous question, I wanted to let you know that this podcast is exclusively presented by Marigold.

Speaker AWe got a question in from Ryan from Las Vegas.
Speaker AVegas.
Speaker AI like Vegas.
Speaker AAlthough the buffet is there.
Speaker AI don't go to a buffet.
Speaker AI almost don't go to buffets, period, because they're kind of gross.
Speaker AI think this one, like, it was actually recent.
Speaker AA few months ago I was at a buffet and I saw this dude sneeze and it was completely disgusting.
Speaker AAnd I'm like, well, what if I didn't see him sneeze?
Speaker AI would have eaten that food.
Speaker AAnd I'm like, I don't know, the whole buffet thing, I, I, we got, we got to do something about it.
Speaker ABut anyway.
Speaker ARyan, what's your quote?
Speaker AIt's a food question.
Speaker AOkay, cool.
Speaker AJay, which of these food combos do you eat?
Speaker AOkay, there's a bunch of them.
Speaker AHere we go.
Speaker AFries and milkshake.
Speaker AOf course, if you don't dip your fries and milkshake, then you're a big loser.
Speaker AThat's like my favorite thing.
Speaker AFries and milkshake all day.
Speaker APeanut butter and pickles.
Speaker AThat's disgusting.
Speaker AI don't even know what that means.
Speaker AWhat do you, you put peanut butter on a pickle.
Speaker AThat's absolutely disgusting.
Speaker ANo pizza and ranch dressing.
Speaker AOf course.
Speaker AWho doesn't eat pizza and ranch dressing?
Speaker AThat's a no brainer.
Speaker AAll right.
Speaker AMac and cheese with applesauce.
Speaker AThat's a thing people eat.
Speaker AMac and cheese and applesauce.
Speaker AThat's gross.
Speaker AThat's actually disgusting.
Speaker AAll right, next.
Speaker AIce cream and balsamic vinegar.
Speaker AIs this made up?
Speaker AWho, what, what planet is somebody eating?
Speaker AIce cream.
Speaker ABalsamic vinegar.
Speaker AWhy would you even try that?
Speaker AThat's terrible.
Speaker ANext one's good.
Speaker AWatermelon and feta.
Speaker AI do that all the time.
Speaker AWatermelon, feta, cheese.
Speaker AThat's a win.
Speaker AThat's acceptable.
Speaker AHot sauce and popcorn, of course.
Speaker AI actually don't think I've made popcorn at home and not put hot sauce on it in years.
Speaker AThat is the best move.
Speaker AAnd the last one, Grape jelly and scrambled eggs.
Speaker ANo, that.
Speaker AThat's straight up disgusting.
Speaker ALike you have a problem.
Speaker ADon't ever tell anybody you eat grape jelly and scrambled eggs because they will judge you.
