Speaker AHere's our reading for the day from James 2:1:7 from the Message the Royal Rule of Love My dear friends, don't let public opinion influence how you live out your live out our glorious Christ originated faith.
Speaker AIf a man enters your church wearing an expensive suit and a street person wearing rags comes in right after him and you say to the man in the suit, sir, sit here.
Speaker AThis is the best seat in the house.
Speaker AAnd either ignore the straight person or say better sit here in the back row.
Speaker AHaven't you segregated God's children and proved that you are judges who can't be trusted?
Speaker ASo listen my dear friends, isn't it clear by now that God operates quite differently?
Speaker AHe chooses the worlds down and out as the kingdom's first citizens with full rights and privileges.
Speaker AThis kingdom is promised to anyone who loves God.
Speaker AAnd here you are abusing these same citizens.
Speaker AIsn't it the high and mighty who exploit you use the courts to rob you blind?
Speaker AAren't they the ones who scorn the new name Christian used in your baptisms?
Speaker AWell my friends, today we're exploring a really powerful passage from the book of James that confronts classism, classism in religious spaces and challenges to examine our own biases.
Speaker ASo let's talk about setting the scene here.
Speaker AHere James addresses a situation that it seems remarkably familiar to me, preferential treatment of wealthy people, even in faith communities.
Speaker AHis words cut through superficial hospitality to expose a deeper systematic issue of class discrimination.
Speaker AHere are some points to ponder.
Speaker AThe first is about internalized classism.
Speaker AJames exposes how we often unconsciously reproduce societal hierarchies in our sacred spaces.
Speaker ASo the detailed description of different treatment based on clothing and appearance mirrors our own tendencies to value certain types of people over others.
Speaker ASo how does our faith communities subtly communicate who is worthy of full inclusion and leadership?
Speaker AThe second point is about divine economic reversal.
Speaker AThe text claims God chose the world's down and out as the kingdom's first citizens.
Speaker AThis isn't about romanticizing poverty, but about recognizing how economic oppression shapes spiritual insight.
Speaker AWhat might economically marginalized people teach us about faith, resistance and community?
Speaker AHow does this challenge prosperity gospel narratives?
Speaker AAnother point is about systematic analysis.
Speaker AJames points out the irony of favoring the wealthy, who often are the very ones exploiting the community through legal systems.
Speaker AThis invites us to examine how we sometimes align with systems that harm us and others.
Speaker AHow do our churches and organizations sometimes perpetuate the very injustices we claim to oppose?
Speaker AHere's your action step.
Speaker AConduct a what we might call a class audit of your faith community or yourself or organizations that you're part of.
Speaker AObserve who holds the leadership positions.
Speaker AExamine the financial requirements to participate perhaps, and notice whose cultural norms dominate and identify barriers to participation for people with limited resources.
Speaker AThen maybe bring your findings to the leadership and advocate for some changes to make the community more economically inclusive.
Speaker AWe're going to have a closing prayer here in just a minute.
