This is Mr. Funky Teacher with BeAFunkyTeacher.com. I'm coming to you with another Be a Funky Teacher podcast. Welcome back, everyone. Today's episode is called Keep Showing Up. There are a lot of things in teaching that can feel overwhelming. A lot of expectations. A lot of pressure. A lot of moments that can make you question yourself. And if you’ve been in this work long enough, you know there are days where it would feel easier to pull back, to go through the motions, to not give quite as much. But the truth is, one of the most powerful things a teacher can do is simply this—keep showing up. Not perfectly. Not flawlessly. But consistently. Before we get into it, I want to ground myself in gratitude. Here are three things that I’m thankful for. The first thing that I’m thankful for is my son, Gavin. Years ago, he wasn’t even supposed to be born. He beat the odds. He fought through before he even entered this world. And in my eyes, all three of my children are miracles. Gavin is that miracle baby who refused to give up before he was even here. I am incredibly thankful for him and what he represents. The second thing that I’m thankful for is the paddling community. Standup paddling, kayaking, canoeing—the whole world has been such a positive part of my life. The people in that community are supportive, encouraging, and just good people overall. I’m really grateful to be a part of it. And the third thing that I’m thankful for is affirmations. I use them. I put them in my classroom. I use them at home. They’re not about ignoring reality. They’re about helping focus forward. They help reset my thinking and keep me grounded in a healthy, positive direction. All right, let’s get into it. The topic we are focusing on is keep showing up. Teaching is not a job where every day feels the same. Some days feel energizing. Some days feel heavy. Some days feel like everything is clicking. And some days feel like nothing is. And in the middle of all of that, what matters most is not perfection. It’s presence. It’s the decision to keep showing up for students, even when it’s not easy. Showing up matters more than perfection. There is no perfect teacher. There is no perfect lesson. There is no perfect day. But students don’t need perfection. They need consistency. They need someone who keeps showing up, even when things aren’t perfect. Your presence impacts students more than you realize. Just being there. Being steady. Being someone students can count on. Even when you don’t feel like your best self. Students pick up on that. And over time, it builds trust. Hard days still count. Not every day will feel like a great teaching day. There will be days when things feel off. When energy is low. When challenges feel like they are stacking up. But those days still matter. Because showing up on hard days shows students what consistency looks like in real life. Small moments are the work. Teaching is not about one big moment. It’s about small moments repeated over time. A quick check-in. A moment of patience. A calm response. A word of encouragement. Those moments may feel small, but they are the work. Consistency creates impact. Impact does not come from one amazing lesson. It comes from consistency. From showing up again and again. From doing the work when it is easy and when it is not. You don’t have to have it all figured out. There is pressure to feel like you need all the answers. But you don’t. You just need to keep showing up. Keep learning. Keep growing. Students notice more than they say. Even when it feels like they are not paying attention, they are. They notice who shows up. They notice who stays patient. They notice who keeps trying. And those things matter. Showing up is a commitment. It is not just routine. It is a commitment to students. A commitment to growth. A commitment to doing meaningful work, even when it is hard. Growth takes time. You will not always see results right away. Sometimes the impact you have will not show up until much later. But that does not mean it is not happening. So after everything, it comes back to this. Keep showing up. On the good days. On the hard days. On the days when you feel confident. And on the days when you don’t. Because the work matters. And the students in front of you matter. As I close, I want to say this. Teaching is not about being perfect. It is about being present. It is about showing up again and again for the students who need you. You may not always see the impact in the moment. But it is there. In the consistency. In the effort. In the care. So whatever season you are in right now—keep showing up. If you found value in this episode, head on over to Apple Podcasts or wherever you listen to your podcast and leave a five star review.
