Speaker 2 00:00:51
Welcome to Bible Bites, the podcast where we work to inspire faith one bite at a time.
Speaker 2 00:00:58
I'm your host, Randy Black.
Speaker 2 00:01:01
Motherhood is often painted as a joyful and fulfilling journey, but for many women, both in biblical times and today.
Speaker 2 00:01:10
It can also be marked by trials, heartbreak, and uncertainty.
Speaker 2 00:01:15
Hagar, the Egyptian maidservant of Sarah, found herself thrust into a situation beyond her control.
Speaker 2 00:01:21
Yet her story is a powerful testament to God's faithfulness in the midst of rejection and isolation
Speaker 2 00:01:29
In Genesis chapter 21, verses 8 through 21, we witness Hagar's struggle to survive in the wilderness with her son Ishmael after being cast out.
Speaker 2 00:01:39
Her story speaks deeply to mothers who feel forgotten, forsaken, or overwhelmed, reminding us that God sees, hears, and provides
Speaker 2 00:01:51
Before we dive into the scripture, let's open up with a word of prayer.
Speaker 2 00:01:56
Heavenly Father, we come before you today with open hearts, asking for your presence as we study this section of the life of Hagar.
Speaker 2 00:02:05
Help us to understand the depth of her struggles and the ways that you intervened with compassion and provision
Speaker 2 00:02:14
We lift up every mother who feels abandoned, unseen, or weary.
Speaker 2 00:02:21
May this episode remind us all that you
Speaker 2 00:02:26
are the God who sees and hears us in our darkest moments.
Speaker 2 00:02:30
Fill us with wisdom and empathy as we reflect on these truths from your word.
Speaker 2 00:02:37
In the name of your Son Jesus we pray.
Speaker 2 00:02:39
Amen.
Speaker 2 00:02:50
CHAPTER twenty one Verses eight through twenty one.
Speaker 2 00:02:56
And the child grew and was weaned, and Abraham held a great feast on the day that Isaac was weaned.
Speaker 2 00:03:03
Now Sarah saw the son of Hagar the Egyptian,
Speaker 2 00:03:05
Whom she had borne to Abraham, mocking Isaac.
Speaker 2 00:03:09
Therefore she said to Abraham, Drive out this slave woman and her son, for the son of the slave woman shall not be an heir with my son Isaac.
Speaker 2 00:03:18
The matter distressed Abraham greatly.
Speaker 2 00:03:24
But God said to Abraham, Do not be distressed because of the boy and your slave woman.
Speaker 2 00:03:31
Whatever Sarah tells you, listen to her, for through Isaac, your
Speaker 2 00:03:35
Descendants shall be named.
Speaker 2 00:03:38
And of the son of the slave woman I will make a nation also, because he is your descendant.
Speaker 2 00:03:45
So Abraham got up early in the morning and took bread and a skin of water, and gave them to
Speaker 2 00:03:50
Hagar, putting them on her shoulder, and gave her the boy, and sent her away, and she departed and wandered in the wilderness of Beersheba.
Speaker 2 00:04:02
When the water in the skin was used up, she left the boy underwater.
Speaker 2 00:04:05
of the bushes.
Speaker 2 00:04:07
Then she went and sat down opposite him, about a bowshot away, where she said, May I not see the boy die?
Speaker 2 00:04:16
And she sat opposite of him and raised her voice and wept.
Speaker 2 00:04:22
God heard the boy crying, and the angel of the God called to Hagar from heaven and said to her, What is the matter with you, Hagar?
Speaker 2 00:04:32
Do not fear, for God has heard the voice of the boy where he is.
Speaker 2 00:04:38
Get up, lift up the boy, and hold him by the hand, for I will make a great nation of him.
Speaker 2 00:04:47
Then God opened her eyes, and she saw a well of water, and she went and filled the skin with water, and gave the boy a drink.
Speaker 2 00:04:57
And God was with the boy as he grew, and he lived in the wilderness,
Speaker 2 00:05:01
and became an archer.
Speaker 2 00:05:03
He lived in the wilderness of Peron, and his mother took a wife for him from the land of Egypt.
Speaker 2 00:05:12
Hagar's story is one of heartbreak.
Speaker 2 00:05:17
And resilience.
Speaker 2 00:05:19
After Ishmael was born, the tensions between Sarah and Hagar grew
Speaker 2 00:05:24
When Isaac, Sarah's son, was weaned, Sarah demanded that Abraham send Hagar and Ishmael away
Speaker 2 00:05:33
Abraham was deeply distressed, but God told him to listen to Sarah, because Ishmael would also become a nation.
Speaker 2 00:05:42
Here we see that while Hagar and Ishmael's departure was driven by human conflict, God had a divine plan for both mother and child.
Speaker 2 00:05:54
As Hagar wandered in the wilderness of Beersheba, her water ran out, and she placed her son under a bush, unable to watch him die.
Speaker 2 00:06:06
Her despair as a mother was palpable.
Speaker 2 00:06:09
She had no resources, no support, and no hope
Speaker 2 00:06:15
But God stepped in.
Speaker 2 00:06:18
The angel of God called to her and reminded her not to fear, affirming that God had heard the voice of the boy
Speaker 2 00:06:26
This interaction echoes a previous encounter in Genesis chapter 16, where Hagar calls God Elroy, the God who sees.
Speaker 2 00:06:37
God then opened Hagar's eyes to see a well of water, symbolizing his provision, even when it seems invisible.
Speaker 2 00:06:46
Not only was Ishmael given water to survive, but God reaffirmed his promise to make him into a great nation
Speaker 2 00:06:55
God did not forget Hagar.
Speaker 2 00:06:57
He did not abandon her or her child, but instead met them right in the heart of their desperation
Speaker 2 00:07:06
This passage of scripture underscores God's care for the marginalized.
Speaker 2 00:07:11
Hagar, a foreign slave woman, might have been dismissed by people, but she was not dismissed by God.
Speaker 2 00:07:18
Her story echoes throughout Scripture in themes of divine intervention, provision, and the lifting up of the lowly.
Speaker 2 00:07:27
As Psalms 34, 18 declares, the Lord is near to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit
Speaker 2 00:07:37
We have some key takeaways from this passage of scripture.
Speaker 2 00:07:40
Our first is that God hears the cries of the suffering
Speaker 2 00:07:45
Just as he heard Ishmael's cry, God hears us when we are in distress.
Speaker 2 00:07:51
Prayer does not go unheard, and divine help often comes when we are at our lowest
Speaker 2 00:07:57
Hagar and Ishmael were physically and emotionally broken, yet God responded.
Speaker 2 00:08:05
His listening ear assures us that even in our loneliness, we are not abandoned.
Speaker 2 00:08:12
When mothers cry over their children, over empty cupboards, or broken homes, those tears matter to God.
Speaker 2 00:08:24
Our next takeaway is that God provides even when all seems lost.
Speaker 2 00:08:32
The well of water Hagar discovered was always there.
Speaker 2 00:08:36
She simply could not see it until God opened her eyes.
Speaker 2 00:08:41
His provision is often closer than we think.
Speaker 2 00:08:46
The whale wasn't dropped from heaven, it was revealed.
Speaker 2 00:08:50
So often, our provision is already within reach, but our despair blinds us.
Speaker 2 00:08:57
Trusting God allows us to see the resources He has placed around us
Speaker 2 00:09:04
Our next takeaway is that mothers are not forgotten by God.
Speaker 2 00:09:08
Even when others turn their backs, God is attentive to the needs and the emotions of mothers who struggle, reminding them that they are valued.
Speaker 2 00:09:18
Hagar's story reflects God's tenderness toward mothers.
Speaker 2 00:09:22
He understands their hearts and honors their sacrifices, just as he did with Mary.
Speaker 2 00:09:29
Hannah and the widow at Zarephath.
Speaker 2 00:09:35
Our next takeaway is that divine purpose can emerge from painful experiences.
Speaker 2 00:09:42
Hagar's suffering was not wasted.
Speaker 2 00:09:45
Through her son, a nation was formed
Speaker 2 00:09:51
God's plans are not thwarted by human rejection.
Speaker 2 00:09:54
Ishmael's destiny came through a path of rejection
Speaker 2 00:10:00
Likewise, many of our greatest testimonies are born from pain.
Speaker 2 00:10:06
God specializes in transforming sorrow into significance
Speaker 2 00:10:13
Our last takeaway is that faith requires us to rise even in adversity.
Speaker 2 00:10:20
God told Hagar to arise, lift up the boy
Speaker 2 00:10:25
Even in grief, there is a call to action, a call to hope, and a call to trust in God's promises.
Speaker 2 00:10:34
God's command to Hagar was simple but powerful.
Speaker 2 00:10:38
We must not give in to despair.
Speaker 2 00:10:41
He invites us to stand.
Speaker 2 00:10:43
To take action and to lead with courage, knowing that he walks with us.
Speaker 2 00:10:51
As we reflect on Hagar's journey here, it's important to acknowledge that motherhood today still comes with its wilderness moments.
Speaker 2 00:11:00
Financial burdens, single parenting, and emotional exhaustion are modern-day equivalents of Hagar's desert.
Speaker 2 00:11:09
Her resilience reminds us that God equips those who call, even if society deems them to be unworthy.
Speaker 2 00:11:19
Hagar's initial despair shows us the reality of being emotionally overwhelmed.
Speaker 2 00:11:26
She believed that she and her son would die
Speaker 2 00:11:32
But God interrupted that thought with a vision of hope.
Speaker 2 00:11:36
Sometimes it takes divine intervention to help us reframe our situation.
Speaker 2 00:11:42
Not because it isn't hard, but because it isn't hopeless.
Speaker 2 00:11:49
The well in the wilderness is symbolic for many.
Speaker 2 00:11:52
For some it's a community stepping in.
Speaker 2 00:11:56
For others, it's renewed faith or an unexpected opportunity.
Speaker 2 00:12:02
Regardless, the message is clear.
Speaker 2 00:12:05
God sees you, hears you, and will not abandon you.
Speaker 2 00:12:11
Her story also prompts us to consider how we treat others.
Speaker 2 00:12:15
Do we act like Sarah pushing away those who feel inconvenient?
Speaker 2 00:12:18
Or do we mirror God's heart, stepping in to help and comfort those who are struggling?
Speaker 2 00:12:26
Ultimately,
Speaker 2 00:12:27
Hagar's story invites us to trust in the unseen God who works in impossible places.
Speaker 2 00:12:34
When we, like Hagar, lift our eyes, we find not just survival
Speaker 2 00:12:41
But the beginning of a renewed purpose.
Speaker 2 00:12:46
Before we talk about our next episode, let's close out our study with a word of prayer.
Speaker 2 00:12:53
Lord God, we thank you for the powerful reminder that you are the God who sees and hears.
Speaker 2 00:13:02
We lift up all mothers today who feel weary, forgotten, or broken.
Speaker 2 00:13:08
May they feel your presence as Hagar did in the wilderness.
Speaker 2 00:13:12
Open their eyes to the wells of provision around them.
Speaker 2 00:13:17
Remind them that their struggles do not disqualify them from your purpose, but rather prepare them for it
Speaker 2 00:13:25
Help us all to walk with compassion, to extend grace to the Hagars in our midst, and to trust you in our wilderness seasons
Speaker 2 00:13:39
In the name of your son Jesus, we pray.
Speaker 2 00:13:42
Amen.
Speaker 2 00:13:45
