Here's today's reading.

Reading from Luke 14:7 14 from the Message Invite the Misfits he went on to tell a story to the guests around the table, noticing how each had tried to elbow into a place of honor, he said, when someone invites you to a dinner, don't take the place of honor.

Somebody more important than you might have been invited by the host.

Then he'll come and call out in front of everybody, you're in the wrong place.

The place of honor belongs to this man.

Embarrassed, you'll have to make your way to the very last table, the only place left when you are invited to dinner.

Go and sit at the last place.

When the host comes, he may very well say, friend, come up to the front.

That will give the dinner guests something to talk about.

What I'm saying is, if you walk around all high and mighty, you're going to end up flat in your face.

But if you're content to be simply yourself, you will become more than yourself.

Then he turned to the host.

The next time you put on a dinner, don't just invite your friends and family and rich neighbors, the kind of people who will return the favorite some people who never get invited out, the misfits from the wrong side of the tracks.

You'll be and experience a blessing.

They won't be able to return the favor, but the favor will be returned.

Oh, how it will be returned at the resurrection of God's people.

What an incredible reading of scripture here today where where Luke challenges our assumptions about hospitality and status and what it means to be a truly inclusive community.

Let's get into our points to ponder.

The first is about status quo disruption.

Jesus observes people jockeying for social position.

It's a scene that's familiar in our modern day context in spaces particularly of power and privilege.

His response isn't just about table manners.

It's a radical critique of hierarchical systems that assign human worth based on social status, wealth and influence.

This challenges us to examine how we perpetuate these systems in our own communities.

Second point is about going beyond reciprocal relationships.

The instructor to invite those who cannot repay you challenges, transactional relationships and networking culture.

This is particularly relevant in our era of social media influence and personal branding.

True community isn't about building beneficial connections.

It's about creating spaces where everyone has dignity regardless of what they can offer.

The third point is about redefining blessing.

Jesus reframes blessing not as a divine reward for piety, but as what happens when we break down social barriers.

This challenges prosperity gospel teachings and suggests that true spiritual abundance comes through radical inclusion and the dismantling of social hierarchies.

Here's your action step.

Audit your own social circle and community space.

What's who is missing from your table?

Look beyond the surface level diversity to examine whose voices are centered and whose are marginalized.

Then take concrete steps to reshape your community gatherings, whether they're dinner parties, church events, social functions to prioritize those typically exclude it.

Remember, true inclusion isn't about inviting others into our existing spaces, but about transforming those spaces completely.

We confess.

We often arrange our lives and our tables for comfort rather than transformation.

Help us recognize where we're perpetuating systems of exclusion, even unconsciously.

Give us courage to move beyond performative inclusion to genuine community building.

When we're tempted to network upward, remind us to reach outward instead.

Grant us wisdom to create spaces where everyone's dignity is honored, where status melts away, and where your radical love transforms all in the spirit of true fellowship.
