Speaker BHere's today's reading.
Speaker AReading from Luke 14:7 14 from the Message Invite the Misfits he went on to tell a story to the guests around the table, noticing how each had tried to elbow into a place of honor, he said, when someone invites you to a dinner, don't take the place of honor.
Speaker ASomebody more important than you might have been invited by the host.
Speaker AThen he'll come and call out in front of everybody, you're in the wrong place.
Speaker AThe place of honor belongs to this man.
Speaker AEmbarrassed, you'll have to make your way to the very last table, the only place left when you are invited to dinner.
Speaker AGo and sit at the last place.
Speaker AWhen the host comes, he may very well say, friend, come up to the front.
Speaker AThat will give the dinner guests something to talk about.
Speaker AWhat I'm saying is, if you walk around all high and mighty, you're going to end up flat in your face.
Speaker ABut if you're content to be simply yourself, you will become more than yourself.
Speaker AThen he turned to the host.
Speaker AThe next time you put on a dinner, don't just invite your friends and family and rich neighbors, the kind of people who will return the favorite some people who never get invited out, the misfits from the wrong side of the tracks.
Speaker AYou'll be and experience a blessing.
Speaker AThey won't be able to return the favor, but the favor will be returned.
Speaker AOh, how it will be returned at the resurrection of God's people.
Speaker AWhat an incredible reading of scripture here today where where Luke challenges our assumptions about hospitality and status and what it means to be a truly inclusive community.
Speaker ALet's get into our points to ponder.
Speaker AThe first is about status quo disruption.
Speaker AJesus observes people jockeying for social position.
Speaker AIt's a scene that's familiar in our modern day context in spaces particularly of power and privilege.
Speaker AHis response isn't just about table manners.
Speaker AIt's a radical critique of hierarchical systems that assign human worth based on social status, wealth and influence.
Speaker AThis challenges us to examine how we perpetuate these systems in our own communities.
Speaker ASecond point is about going beyond reciprocal relationships.
Speaker AThe instructor to invite those who cannot repay you challenges, transactional relationships and networking culture.
Speaker AThis is particularly relevant in our era of social media influence and personal branding.
Speaker ATrue community isn't about building beneficial connections.
Speaker AIt's about creating spaces where everyone has dignity regardless of what they can offer.
Speaker AThe third point is about redefining blessing.
Speaker AJesus reframes blessing not as a divine reward for piety, but as what happens when we break down social barriers.
Speaker AThis challenges prosperity gospel teachings and suggests that true spiritual abundance comes through radical inclusion and the dismantling of social hierarchies.
Speaker AHere's your action step.
Speaker AAudit your own social circle and community space.
Speaker AWhat's who is missing from your table?
Speaker ALook beyond the surface level diversity to examine whose voices are centered and whose are marginalized.
Speaker AThen take concrete steps to reshape your community gatherings, whether they're dinner parties, church events, social functions to prioritize those typically exclude it.
Speaker ARemember, true inclusion isn't about inviting others into our existing spaces, but about transforming those spaces completely.
Speaker AWe'll come back and have a closing prayer here in just a moment.
Speaker AI just want to share with you that we have a resource for you for your own at home Bible study.

Speaker ALet's pray.
Speaker AOh God, you are a divine host.
Speaker AWe confess.
Speaker AWe often arrange our lives and our tables for comfort rather than transformation.
Speaker AHelp us recognize where we're perpetuating systems of exclusion, even unconsciously.
Speaker AGive us courage to move beyond performative inclusion to genuine community building.
Speaker AWhen we're tempted to network upward, remind us to reach outward instead.
Speaker AGrant us wisdom to create spaces where everyone's dignity is honored, where status melts away, and where your radical love transforms all in the spirit of true fellowship.
Speaker AAmen.
