Speaker:the upcoming A.A. International Convention
Speaker:which takes place this
July 3rd through the 6th
Speaker:in Vancouver, British Columbia.
Speaker:My name is Nathan, I'm an alcoholic.
Speaker:Welcome to the International Convention.
Speaker:(upbeat music continues)
Speaker:We sat down with four board members
Speaker:and a GSO staff coordinator
Speaker:to chat about A.A.'s biggest event.
Speaker:What is it, why is it such a big deal?
Speaker:And what it's like to
experience it for yourself.
Speaker:Here's Carolyn W. and Vera
F. sharing the overall vibe.
Speaker:- It is electric.
Speaker:There is so much enthusiasm.
Speaker:Everyone just really wants
Speaker:to show people how welcome
they are and participate.
Speaker:The enthusiasm for it is huge.
Speaker:- You can imagine walking
into this massive arena
Speaker:that's filled with tens of
thousands of sober alcoholics
Speaker:all gathered together for recovery
Speaker:and this overwhelming
sense of unity and joy.
Speaker:From the moment that you walk in,
Speaker:this energy just engulfs you.
Speaker:People are laughing
and hugging old friends
Speaker:and making new ones.
Speaker:And the sound of 40,000 plus AA members
Speaker:saying the Serenity Prayer in unison
Speaker:is one of those moments that
kind of gives you chills.
Speaker:- But it's not all huge
crowds and large gatherings.
Speaker:- I think the amazing
thing for me personally
Speaker:is just the those quiet
moments of personal connection
Speaker:that you can find in this
great big place full of people.
Speaker:And I don't know who that'll
be or where I'll find them,
Speaker:but I know that there
will be those moments
Speaker:I share with other A.A. members
Speaker:who we just pause in a hallway somewhere
Speaker:or randomly sit next to each
other in a meeting somewhere
Speaker:and have that brief moment of connection.
Speaker:It's really, really special.
Speaker:- People can expect of
course speaker meetings,
Speaker:there's workshops, panels
featuring A.A. members
Speaker:from all over the world.
Speaker:If you're interested in history
Speaker:or you're interested in service
Speaker:or you're just interested in
personal stories of recovery,
Speaker:I think there's something
there for everyone.
Speaker:There's smaller sessions
on more specific topics,
Speaker:opportunities to connect with people
Speaker:from different countries.
Speaker:I sat in on some meetings
just to hear the language.
Speaker:I sat in on a a meeting spoken in German
Speaker:and I just wanted to hear the language.
Speaker:And you know, besides
the official programming,
Speaker:you know, there's plenty to do.
Speaker:Grab coffee with some friends,
explore the whole city.
Speaker:- Speaking of exploring the city,
Speaker:here's Trish L. to tell us
about a popular tradition
Speaker:at the International Convention.
Speaker:- When the meetings
end on the Friday night
Speaker:and Saturday night at
the convention center,
Speaker:the convention campus in Vancouver
Speaker:includes BC Place Stadium.
Speaker:It's about a 20 minute walk
Speaker:from the convention center
itself to BC Place Stadium.
Speaker:So Walk The Walk is all of us walking
Speaker:who choose, who can, walking
from the convention center
Speaker:to BC Place Stadium
Speaker:and the excitement
builds with every block.
Speaker:In Minneapolis, I thought
I was floating on air
Speaker:and I'm so excited to think
that the city of Vancouver
Speaker:and our local members get
to experience Walk The Walk
Speaker:at this particular convention.
Speaker:- It sounds like Vancouver is
a great city to Walk The Walk.
Speaker:- Oh, I really can't wait,
it will be spectacular.
Speaker:- And once we get to the stadium.
Speaker:- I think for most people,
you know, a highlight
Speaker:are the big meetings which
will be in BC Place Stadium
Speaker:and all of us gathered together
and witnessing together
Speaker:and hearing together
the Old-Timers Meeting,
Speaker:the saying of the Serenity Prayer
Speaker:in the languages represented
but together as one voice.
Speaker:- This is from the 1990
International Convention
Speaker:in Seattle, Washington.
Speaker:- God, grant me the Serenity
Speaker:to accept the things I cannot change,
Speaker:the courage to change the things I can,
Speaker:and the wisdom to know the difference.
Speaker:Thank you.
Speaker:- Tom H. had a favorite memory
from that same convention.
Speaker:- At my first in Seattle,
Speaker:and I was only a couple
years sober at the time.
Speaker:And at the closing ceremony,
a blind woman was led
Speaker:to the microphone to sing "Amazing Grace."
Speaker:And when she sang, "I
was blind but now I see,"
Speaker:there wasn't a dry eye in the place.
Speaker:- Here's Trish again.
Speaker:- For me, a highlight of any International
Speaker:that I've ever ever been to,
Speaker:and this could only happen
in Alcoholics Anonymous,
Speaker:and it was the hard work of the organizers
Speaker:of that convention, was
hearing a a young man
Speaker:who was serving time in
the Georgia prison system
Speaker:share for the first time publicly,
Speaker:for the first time outside
of a jail or institution
Speaker:in front of all those 57,000 people
Speaker:under the dome in Atlanta,
Speaker:sharing his experience,
strength, and hope.
Speaker:That was extraordinary.
Speaker:You could hear a pin drop.
Speaker:- Another favorite is
the Old-Timers Meeting.
Speaker:- The way that works is that members
Speaker:with over 50 years of sobriety,
Speaker:they all sit in a section
very close to the stage,
Speaker:the names are randomly pulled
Speaker:and we get to hear from
15 or so of them, I guess,
Speaker:that come up on stage and
share for five minutes.
Speaker:And again, it's just one of those things
Speaker:that's extremely powerful, enlightening,
Speaker:humorous to see all
that sobriety up there,
Speaker:just getting a couple of minutes
Speaker:to say a few things to the crowd.
Speaker:- Then when we leave the meeting.
Speaker:- The beautiful light will
probably be in the sky
Speaker:until about 10 o'clock at night.
Speaker:That means that as people
leave BC Place Stadium,
Speaker:having had this amazing
collective experience together,
Speaker:they're going to be walking
out into this lovely gloaming
Speaker:of a long, long summer night in Vancouver.
Speaker:It will be unforgettable.
Speaker:- Carolyn, do you keep
in touch with anyone
Speaker:you've met at past
International Conventions?
Speaker:- I actually have a
couple friends I've met
Speaker:from out outside of Canada
that intend to be there,
Speaker:one from Rwanda and one from Iran.
Speaker:We'll see if they make
it, but I'm sure hoping
Speaker:to get to see them at that meeting.
Speaker:- I have some friends that I know
Speaker:that are coming from as far
away as Japan, South Africa.
Speaker:I know some folks in
Australia who are coming.
Speaker:I think it's going to be a
real global gathering and-
Speaker:- An excellent way to
enhance one's experience
Speaker:at the convention is to do service.
Speaker:That opportunity is open to anyone.
Speaker:And Trish, who heads
the Volunteer Committee,
Speaker:told us about the volunteer kickoff event.
Speaker:- There were, you know,
between 750 and 800 amazing,
Speaker:totally energized members of
Alcoholics Anonymous there
Speaker:for this kickoff event.
Speaker:And I think they blew
the lid off the building.
Speaker:And the energy, but it's
not just the energy,
Speaker:it's the love for Alcoholics Anonymous.
Speaker:- What kind of volunteer
positions are available?
Speaker:- Most of them involve greeting
in some way or another.
Speaker:Some don't, there are marathon meetings,
Speaker:so there's a specific committee
for the marathon meetings
Speaker:that will be going 24/7
starting on the Thursday night
Speaker:of the convention.
Speaker:There's a Guest Headquarters
Committee that again,
Speaker:that's greeting though,
Speaker:it will be sort of the nerve
center for the volunteers
Speaker:and for us during the convention itself.
Speaker:Even a committee like Global Languages,
Speaker:which is there to make sure
Speaker:that anybody whose first language
is not necessarily English
Speaker:or even French or Spanish,
Speaker:has a way of communicating with us.
Speaker:It's you know, we're going to be able
Speaker:to connect them we hope with technology
Speaker:as well as other people.
Speaker:But even that is a form of greeting
Speaker:because you know, it's
called Global Languages,
Speaker:but the theme of this convention
Speaker:is the Language of the Heart
and that's what we all speak.
Speaker:- There are many things to
do at the convention and yet.
Speaker:- There's no way you
could look at the program
Speaker:and know what your experience is gonna be
Speaker:because it just doesn't allow
Speaker:for the random lunch you ended up having
Speaker:with the group of people
who were there from Poland.
Speaker:That happened to me in Atlanta,
Speaker:and you know you can't plan for that.
Speaker:That's just not in the program.
Speaker:- Carolyn, for someone who's
never visited British Columbia
Speaker:or the West Coast of Canada,
Speaker:what would you tell them that
makes the area so special?
Speaker:- Oh my goodness, there is so much.
Speaker:Of course, the outdoors
Speaker:and we have some fantastic
accessible outdoor spaces.
Speaker:The convention site itself
is right on the ocean.
Speaker:You can quite literally
walk 10 minutes to a beach.
Speaker:Lots of trees in Stanley Park.
Speaker:So, there's lots of that
type of excitement to be had.
Speaker:And if you're interested in,
you know, museums, history,
Speaker:galleries, Pacific
Northwest, indigenous art,
Speaker:I mean, we just have so much.
Speaker:I am so excited for people to
get to see what we have here,
Speaker:in addition to just the big-hearted spirit
Speaker:of our A.A. community.
Speaker:- what kind of questions do you get?
Speaker:- People who aren't familiar
with traveling to Canada
Speaker:have had questions about
things like currency exchange.
Speaker:A lot of people don't
know the Canadian dollar
Speaker:is about a $1.35, $1.40 US.
Speaker:So whenever you see something
in US dollar prices,
Speaker:it's actually like 35 to
40% less than it looks like.
Speaker:- Some folks might have some
challenges crossing the border.
Speaker:- People have asked a lot of questions
Speaker:about how to enter Canada if
you have a criminal record.
Speaker:And I'm so glad that the
General Service Office
Speaker:has done such a great job
Speaker:on those frequently asked questions
Speaker:'cause there's links there
on the aa.org website
Speaker:that go right to the correct information
Speaker:for like the official information
Speaker:so people don't have to guess or Google.
Speaker:You can go straight to the facts.
Speaker:- Patrick, the International
Convention Staff Coordinator,
Speaker:had a friendly reminder.
Speaker:- The key date to keep
in mind is April 15th.
Speaker:That's when our pre-registration will end
Speaker:and the registration price will increase.
Speaker:So, if you're thinking about going
Speaker:to the International Convention,
Speaker:then now's the time to make those plans.
Speaker:- We're here with our arms
