Imagine for a moment the creator of the universe.

The one who spoke everything into existence, choosing to enter his creation as a helpless infant.

His arrival wasn't announced in royal cohorts.

But it was announced to humble shepherds.

His first resting place wasn't a throne, but was a manger.

This monumental event marks the beginning of God's redemptive plan for humanity.

A plan filled with love, sacrifice, and the promise of eternal life.

Today, we'll focus on three key aspects of this miraculous event.

The humility of Christ's birth.

The fulfillment of prophecy and the message of the angels.

Before we dive in, let's open our hearts in prayer

Heavenly Father, as we reflect on the birth of your Son, we ask for your Spirit to guide us in our thoughts and to open up our hearts

Help us to see the beauty and significance of this story in a fresh way.

We thank you for sending Jesus into the world, not as a conquering king.

But as a humble servant, let his example inspire us to live with both humility and with grace.

We praise you for being faithful to your promises, fulfilling every prophecy in your perfect time.

Strengthen our trust in you, knowing that you are always working for good.

And we rejoice in the good news of Jesus' birth.

A message of hope, of peace, and of salvation for all people.

Let's begin by reading from Luke chapter 2, verses 1 through 20.

Now in those days a decree went out from Caesar Augustus, that a census be taken of all the inhabited earth.

This was the first census taken while Corinius was governor of Syria.

and all the people were on their way to register for the census, each to his own city.

Now Joseph also went up from Galilee, from the city of Nazareth, to Judea, to the city of David, which is called Bethlehem, because he was of the house and family of David,

in order to register along with Mary, who was betrothed to him, and was pregnant.

While they were there, the time came for her to give birth

And she gave birth to her firstborn son, and she wrapped him in cloths, and laid him in a manger, because there was no room for them in the inn

In the same region there were some shepherds staying out in the fields, and keeping watch over their flock at night, and an angel of the Lord suddenly stood near them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terribly frightened.

And so the angel said to them, Do not be afraid, for behold I bring you good news of great joy, which will be for all the people.

For today in the city of David, there has been born for you a Savior, who is Christ the Lord.

And this will be a sign for you.

You will find a baby wrapped in claws and lying in a manger

And suddenly there appeared with the angel a multitude of the heavenly army of angels, praising God and saying, Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace among people with whom he is pleased.

When the angels had departed from them into heaven, the shepherds began saying to one another, Let's go straight to Bethlehem, then, and see this thing that has happened, which the Lord has made known to us.

And they came in a hurry and found their way to Mary and Joseph.

and the baby as he lay in the manger.

When they had seen him, they made known the statement which had been told them about this child, and all who heard it were amazed about the things which were told them by the shepherds

But Mary treasured all these things, pondering them in her heart, and the shepherds went back, glorifying and praising God for all that they had heard and seen, just as had been told them.

Imagine for a moment the setting of Jesus' birth.

Mary and Joseph, having traveled a long and difficult journey to Bethlehem, found no room in the inn.

The Savior of the world, God in the flesh, is born in a stable, likely surrounded by animals, and laid in a manger, a feeding trough

This isn't just a quaint image for nativity scenes.

Speaker 1 00:05:39

It's a profound statement about God's nature.

Speaker 1 00:05:42

In Philippians chapter 2, verses 6 and 7, we read.

Who, as he already existed in the form of God, did not consider equality with God something to be grasped

Speaker 1 00:05:54

but emptied himself by taking the form of a bondservant and being born in the likeness of men.

Why would God choose such a humble entry into the world?

First, it was to show that his kingdom is not of this world.

The humility of Christ's birth contrasts sharply.

Speaker 1 00:06:18

With the grandeur of earthly kings.

Speaker 1 00:06:21

His mission was spiritual, not political.

Speaker 1 00:06:25

Second, it was to identify with the lowly.

Speaker 1 00:06:29

Jesus came for everyone, rich and poor alike.

Speaker 1 00:06:35

His humble birth reflects his heart for the outcast, the marginalized, and the brokenhearted.

Today, this humility challenges us.

Speaker 1 00:06:46

Are we willing to embrace humility in our own lives?

Speaker 1 00:06:50

Do we measure our worth by earthly standards?

Speaker 1 00:06:54

Or do we look to Christ, who calls us to serve rather than to be served?

The story of Jesus' birth isn't just a beautiful narrative, it's the fulfillment of sin.

Centuries of prophecy.

Speaker 1 00:07:11

Consider Micah chapter 5, verse 2, written hundreds of years before Jesus' birth

Speaker 1 00:07:18

But as for you, Bethlehem, Ephratha, too little to be among the clans of Judah.

From you one will come forth from me to be the ruler in Israel

Speaker 1 00:07:31

His times of coming forth are from long ago, from the days of eternity

Bethlehem was a small and seemingly insignificant town, yet it became the birthplace of the Messiah.

Why is this significant?

Speaker 1 00:07:52

The first reason is that it it shows God's sovereignty.

Speaker 1 00:07:58

Even the decree from Caesar Augustus, which required Mary and Joseph to travel to Bethlehem, was a part.

Of God's plan.

Speaker 1 00:08:08

It demonstrated also God's faithfulness.

Speaker 1 00:08:12

Every detail

Speaker 1 00:08:14

Of Jesus' birth aligns with scripture, proving that God keeps his promises.

In Isaiah 7 verse 14, there's another prophecy that was fulfilled.

It said, Therefore the Lord Himself will give you a sign.

Speaker 1 00:08:33

Behold, the Virgin will conceive and give birth to a son, and she will name him Emmanuel.

This reminds us that God's timing is absolutely 100% perfect.

The long-awaited Messiah came exactly as promised.

For us today, these fulfilled prophecies strengthen our faith.

They remind us that God is in control even when life feels uncertain.

The angelic announcement to the shepherds is one of the most beautiful moments in the Christmas story.

Shepherds, often considered lowly and unimportant, were the first to hear the news of the Savior's birth.

In Luke chapter 2, verses 10 and 11, it says, Do not be afraid, for behold, I bring you good news of great joy

Which will be for all the people.

For today in the city of David, there has been born for you a Savior, who is Christ the Lord.

Let's take a moment and unpack that message.

It starts with fear not.

Speaker 1 00:09:45

The angels addressed the shepherds' immediate fear, but also spoke to the greater fear that humanity has lived under since the fall.

Jesus' birth brought the hope of reconciliation with God, removing fear of judgment.

When they talk of good new good news of great joy, this is the news of Jesus' birth.

It wasn't just for the shepherds, it was for all people.

It's a message of joy that transcends time.

culture, and circumstance, and then a savior, which is Christ the Lord.

These three titles, Savior, Christ, and Lord, sum up Jesus' mission.

He came to save us from sin, fulfill the role of the promised Messiah, and establish His lordship over all creation.

The response of the shepherds is equally significant.

They didn't keep the news to themselves.

They went to see Jesus and then spread the word.

This challenges us.

Are we sharing the good news?

of Christ with others.

As we finish up our look at the birth of Christ, let's close out with a prayer

Reflecting on what we have discussed and learned about the birth of Jesus

Heavenly Father, we thank you for the incredible gift of your Son, Jesus Christ

His birth reminds us of your humility, that the King of Kings came into this world in his simplest of ways

May we learn to walk humbly as Jesus did and find joy in serving others.

We praise you.

for your faithfulness in fulfilling every prophecy, showing us that your word is unchanging and your promises are true
