It's around the house. When it
[00:00:17] Intro: comes to remodeling and renovating your home. There is
[00:00:20] Intro: a lot to know though. We've got you coming. This is around the house.
[00:00:28] Eric Goranson: Welcome to around the house with Eric G and Caroline B. This is our midweek special. This. Podcasts of stuff that didn't make it on the radio last weekend and won't make it on the radio next weekend.
[00:00:40] Eric Goranson: Thanks for joining us. Hey, Caroline. Hello. How are you today?
[00:00:44] Caroline Blazovsky: Everybody? Hello? It's midweek already. It's it's flying and 4th of July is coming. 4th of July is
[00:00:51] Eric Goranson: next year. Isn't that cool? That is cool. And I'm tired.
[00:00:57] Intro: You
[00:00:57] Caroline Blazovsky: tired from all that bar that all that [00:01:00] barbecue
[00:01:00] Intro: in.
[00:01:01] Eric Goranson: We, if you, if you were watching us on social media, we had this barbecue Fest at the casino, the new casino that they built north of Portland here at a and a, it was a lot of fun.
[00:01:12] Eric Goranson: And so we went out Saturday night to the barbecue Fest. I mean, we ran into all these people were there, chef Robert Irvine, we had all these different high, if you've watched food network, a lot of the people were. Which was awesome.
[00:01:28] Caroline Blazovsky: And Eric has taken his barbecue skill to a whole new level.
[00:01:33] Caroline Blazovsky: He is now officially. I officially put him up there with like the pros, cuz you need to tell them what you did. He didn't just barbecue. He stepped in, they needed help. And he stepped in and started seriously doing grill skill.
[00:01:48] Eric Goranson: We, we dove in so this was what was cool. So at this barbecue Fest, um, I'll give you kind a little bit more of the, so Stan Hayes is a big guy out there.
[00:01:59] Eric Goranson: As [00:02:00] far as the, in the barbecue world. He's won like chopped before, on, on food network and that kind of stuff. He has this, uh, barbecue veterans relief program. Which is awesome operation, barbecue thing that he does. And so what he does is he travels across the country, him and his team, and they will feed veterans they'll feed, uh, first responders homeless.
[00:02:26] Eric Goranson: They'll go around and do this whole program. And this is top level barbecue. This is not something. That's just, oh, we're making barbecue. This is next level stuff here. He rolls into town and shows all the barbecue experts in that town, how to do it. And so they were doing that here. And so Julie and I ran into him on Saturday night and I'm like, man, those are the best ribs I've ever had.
[00:02:52] Eric Goranson: And which is, I've had a lot of ribs and so we're talking, he's like, yeah, I got that tomorrow. And, and we've had some cancellations of people. Uh, [00:03:00] so we're gonna be tight tomorrow. And I said, we were gonna go out and hit the river. I mean, hit the lake or river do stuff. Cuz it was a hot day.
[00:03:05] Eric Goranson: It was gonna be a hundred. I'm like we're gonna come volunteer. So we get up there I didn't really think about the level that we were doing. So we had to cook 175 full racks of ribs. That's a
[00:03:22] Intro: lot of ribs. He,
[00:03:23] Eric Goranson: he cooked him. He had a huge smoker, rotiserie style, smoker that he cooked it in or cooker really.
[00:03:30] Eric Goranson: And it was a rotiserie trailer mounted rig that he had all those ribs in. And then, so he'd pull 'em out of that. We had this. Pit barbecue. That was about eight feet by oh, 30 inches deep. That was open pit with wood coals and lump barbecue. Nice. So he would finish 'em on that with, uh, uh, barbecue sauce, uh, Apple cider vinegar and apple cider.
[00:03:54] Eric Goranson: Yeah, that's the best.
[00:03:55] Caroline Blazovsky: I saw that apple CI vinegar. That is just, you gotta make your, so we're
[00:03:58] Eric Goranson: doing that and [00:04:00] it's a hundred degrees outside and of course we're in a parking lot with things over the top of us, it was like 120 down there. And we knocked this stuff out in four hours. Julie was a trooper cuz she's got that broken finger.
[00:04:12] Eric Goranson: She was serving up the ribs. My job was to sit there and cut 'em up. So he'd cut. 'em into like two in singles cuz. Sell 'em as like a single rib, double rib or threes. So I was sitting there cutting 'em up. And what it got interesting is I, I was like, man, I'm getting almost a little heat stroke. So I'm powering through this.
[00:04:31] Eric Goranson: All of a sudden, I look up and I got chef Robert Irvine looking over my shoulder, wanting to rib and I'm like, wow, this is cool. Todd English, famous restaurant tour, he's got what, four James Beard awards. He's standing there. And then I got Aaron May who looks like my long lost brother. is standing there with the, with the, with the beard and the longer hair that I'm getting.
[00:04:58] Eric Goranson: And I'm sitting here looking around, [00:05:00] going, I am way over my skis right now with, can you imagine I've got these experts right here.
[00:05:05] Intro: I'll jump in and you start
[00:05:07] Caroline Blazovsky: serving all the celebrity chefs. That's like
[00:05:10] Eric Goranson: insane. I was just crazy, and, and Julie loves Erin may, so she was blown out of her socks, just going.
[00:05:18] Eric Goranson: Aaron, I I'm giving food there in may, and I was getting it from food from him last night. So it was just, it was a great time and, and a lot of great people there. And, uh, we had just an absolute blast. So it was, well, you got, and you
[00:05:30] Caroline Blazovsky: got a little present. You need to talk about your present that you got.
[00:05:32] Caroline Blazovsky: That's like your real reward for all of this work.
[00:05:36] Eric Goranson: So it was funny. So we're, we're working and, I didn't even think to bring an apron. I didn't know what we were doing. I just was doing my thing and I thought, okay, it'll wash out. It's food, it'll wash out of my clothes. , wasn't too worried about it.
[00:05:50] Eric Goranson: But Stan Hayes was sitting there with this operation barbecue relief. He's got this really cool custom made, uh, barbecue apron. And at the end of the [00:06:00] thing, he goes, ah, Eric, I'm not much of an apron wear, but I'm happy. I wore this today. Because I just was slinging barbecue sauce everywhere.
[00:06:09] Eric Goranson: This thing probably could have stood up on its own. It was so covered in, in meat, juices, meat, juice, and all that stuff going on there. And it was hilarious. And so he turned around and, and goes, Hey, this is my gift to you for helping out today. Nice. So now, uh, we've got a very professional, uh, apron for that, which is cool.
[00:06:33] Eric Goranson: So from one of the best barbecue guys out there, so July 4th, really cool. That was
[00:06:37] Caroline Blazovsky: a fun. July 4th has nothing on you. Now my friend, like every event, we're just gonna have it at Eric's house. Cuz Eric is obviously gone to a new level of barbecue that, you know, so when someone says who's going on the grill, guess who.
[00:06:51] Eric Goranson: Yeah, exactly. Exactly. So that was fun. It was learned a lot about cooking, a lot, learned a lot about, uh, barbecue, my ribs, which I thought were good [00:07:00] or horrible compared to his, and, and, uh, we had some table scraps off the, off the cutting table. We brought home. Awesome. Nice. We had, uh, last night we had, uh, Uh, rib tacos.
[00:07:10] Eric Goranson: Uh, Julie made this like pineapple and chopped onions, red onions and, and, uh, cilantro with, uh, with our rib tacos last night. And that was, that
[00:07:20] Intro: was the bomb.
[00:07:22] Caroline Blazovsky: Well, you know what I had over the weekend, I had, we had the fathers over. So it was the, we did a belated father's day, if you will, just because we couldn't do it.
[00:07:31] Caroline Blazovsky: The following weekend, we had other issues come up, but I had the short rib burger. Now Eric's been talking about this, like having a short rib burger but oh my God, is this thing juicy melts in your mouth? Is Angus short ribbed mixed with, I don't know. There's something else going on in there and yeah.
[00:07:51] Caroline Blazovsky: Like
[00:07:52] Eric Goranson: top lo mixed in there too. Yes. Yeah. Holy heck. Thank you, Costco. Yeah.
[00:07:58] Caroline Blazovsky: So you can get this at [00:08:00] Costco. It's in the fresh hamburger section. Yeah. And my friend Lynn turned us on to these burgers, but oh my God. I'm just my mouth is watering thinking about it. It just oozes with juice coming in the bun with the cheese and yeah,
[00:08:14] Eric Goranson: it's good stuff.
[00:08:15] Eric Goranson: It's fourth of good stuff. Yeah. Mm-hmm think about that for the barbecue. That's a good way to go. If you're, uh, doing your shopping here for 4th of July. So
[00:08:25] Caroline Blazovsky: Ellis, Ellis. Chuck and short rib, Angus beef craft
[00:08:29] Eric Goranson: burgers. There you go. Good meat right there. Gotta get, you know, what's funny, I get spoiled because of, uh, Jeff, Tracy, uh, we have a, a beef company here, uh, painted Hills natural beef that I get all my steaks and stuff with.
[00:08:42] Eric Goranson: And, uh, and that quality of meat makes such a big difference when you're out barbecuing. Mm-hmm you. And, uh, wanted to give a quick tip for people out there. If you got a heat wave going, and you've got some ways that you're trying to cool [00:09:00] down outside on your deck and your barbecue area, if you are dying out there and it's hot.
[00:09:05] Eric Goranson: Cause you know, we ha it was Sunday. It was a hundred degrees here already, which heck of a lot better than the 118 we had a year before. Yeah. I mean, that's cool. But one thing that you can do out there is the, they have those misters, you hook up to your hose. Mm mm-hmm and there's a couple good ones you can just get at.
[00:09:23] Eric Goranson: Lowe's just go in there off the shelf at Lowe's. They make one, your, your traditional stand fan that like goes and does its little swivel. Of course, on the stand, they make it where you can zip tie it onto the outside of the frame. Nice. So it's just a little tiny hose and they'll sit there and missed off in front of it.
[00:09:44] Eric Goranson: And the fan blows it. Sweet. So you could set it out there. You get the air flow. And then you get the mist and just took some to the garden
[00:09:51] Caroline Blazovsky: hose. He's always trying to create this spa experience. No matter wherever you go, it's like the spa experience spa.
[00:09:57] Eric Goranson: Yeah. I mean, what's wrong with being comfortable, [00:10:00] right?
[00:10:00] Eric Goranson: I mean, no, it's good. Why be miserable out there? So if, if it's, you're out there dying, it's not a bad way to go. And they make 'em for, hose end ones, different ones too. You can, they make ones that you can set up around the perimeter of a, of a covered patio if you want to do it.
[00:10:13] Eric Goranson: But, uh, that Mister can make things a little more bearable. Yeah, it's nice.
[00:10:19] Caroline Blazovsky: And I still wanna get that pit boss, Kansas city four, and one barbecue. You saw it's only $749. And this thing's got app pellet stove or pellet grill. Yeah. It's got a gas grill. It's got a griddle and then you can full on. It's got something else too.
[00:10:36] Caroline Blazovsky: It's
[00:10:37] Eric Goranson: the four. What else do you that's yeah, it's got propane barbecue as well. And it's got the pellet it's it's. It's a triple threat, oh my
[00:10:44] Caroline Blazovsky: God, this thing, $749. I think you can pick it up at Walmart, him
[00:10:49] Intro: getting one.
[00:10:51] Eric Goranson: Kick boss. That was pretty cool. I was, I was impressed by that. That's uh, that was really cool.
[00:10:55] Eric Goranson: Mm-hmm and yeah, I mean, it's, it's barbecue season. It's time to go out there [00:11:00] and then if you're out doing any home improvement stuff right now, you're gonna see again, this is one of those weekends. 4th of July sales are big on appliances. So if you're out shopping for appliances, take a look at like in the home centers, they'll have the special buy.
[00:11:15] Eric Goranson: Where they buy in a certain amount of them. And it's a good time to find in stock appliances where so many people out there. I mean, if you wanna order a subzero, I've heard clients of mine that are complaining that they're nine months from when their refrigerator shows up. Yeah. They're ordering it today and it'll be here next year kind of stuff.
[00:11:36] Eric Goranson: If you want to get in stock stuff, this is a good weekend to get it. Cuz there's a lot of special buy from either the large local appliance stores or of course the big box stores, which are selling some of the brands
[00:11:46] Caroline Blazovsky: and they were having sales. We got a huge, we wanted an umbrella for outside, one of the big ones mm-hmm so we ended up getting that at fortune offs, they were having a sale.
[00:11:54] Caroline Blazovsky: So lots of sales that was last weekend, but yeah, pretty sure this weekend keeps going. [00:12:00]
[00:12:00] Eric Goranson: Yeah. There's just so many of those things and it's it's tools. It's not a bad time to get tools as well. Mm. And of course, lawn equipment, they start, this is kind of that time that they start like starting to think of fall closing out already.
[00:12:11] Eric Goranson: Right?
[00:12:13] Intro: Mm. Lawn equipment.
[00:12:15] Eric Goranson: It's yeah, there you go. You want that lawn moer?
[00:12:17] Caroline Blazovsky: I'm dreaming of that zero turn radius. I don't care, which brand, any of the electric ones will do what? Come, come on guys. Someone's gotta hear us. please. I need to cut my grass in a, in the, there you go. Ego friendly way possible.
[00:12:33] Eric Goranson: Nice. Yeah. I'm battery powered on mine, mm-hmm, , I've got that. Uh, which is cool. But yeah, like for instance, over here, we're talking appliances. I just jumped on home Depot's website and they're saying right now, 4th of July savings up to 25% off select appliances, or they've got a $750 rebate. Hmm.
[00:12:51] Intro: Sweet. That's not
[00:12:51] Eric Goranson: bad. That's great. Especially if you could get it in stock right now, have you seen this too? The home centers are starting to do [00:13:00] this, which is interesting. Uh, do you ever have the, do you have the app on your phones? Mm-hmm you guys, it's weird when you look up like gr great example, home Depot, I'll walk into that store.
[00:13:11] Eric Goranson: And maybe I looked up on my phone to see if they have a stock or not. Oh, it tells you and you have the in-store experience and it walks you to the aisle aisle on the shelf. Yes. I'm like, here it is. Why do you have people at orange aprons now? You know what I mean? It's, it's quite frankly can be more reliable than the help that goes, oh, it's down there in aisle 72 in the back corner and you get down there and you're like, You're not close.
[00:13:36] Intro: you don't know where it's
[00:13:39] Eric Goranson: it's like, no, no, it's not there. It's not there. Yeah. It's just one of those things that it's a good time to go out appliances and, and lawn care stuff. Uh, tools. That's one thing when a lot of these home centers that they'll have their. Their tool packages, where you can go in and get this bundle pack [00:14:00] of tools.
[00:14:00] Eric Goranson: If you're looking to upgrade that tool set, it's a good time to do it because they've got those special buy packs that they get. If you've got a, craftsman or, or, or Milwaukee or whatever, they start to put those things together. And it's not a bad way to go.
[00:14:16] Caroline Blazovsky: I know what I'm looking to expand.
[00:14:18] Caroline Blazovsky: What's that my fireworks display. I gotta go get
[00:14:21] Intro: some fireworks. Fireworks. Hoping I don't blow. Are they legal in your area? Uh, I dunno. I
[00:14:27] Eric Goranson: dunno. Got it. I understood. It's about the same in my area. are they legal?
[00:14:32] Intro: I dunno.
[00:14:35] Eric Goranson: I know they're not here, but, uh, but, uh, it sounds like, uh, world war II here, two here, cuz I'm in a fairly nice neighborhood and they'll fire 'em off over the lake.
[00:14:46] Eric Goranson: We have enough. American Indian reservations around us, where they can sell just about anything. Nice. See that people drive over there. They'll hit the huge city, I mean, it's like a home center size fireworks building, and they'll go in there and, [00:15:00] and I've done it before I did that.
[00:15:01] Eric Goranson: Sheesh, probably dozen, 15 years ago. And that was the first time that I bought fireworks that I went. Yeah, that was a little big. That's scary. I like that these were softball size mortars. Oh, mm. And you drop 'em down like a three inch tube and launch launch. 'em up two. Yeah. That's fun. I'd yeah. Well, I launched 'em and when it went off, it rattled, when it came out of the tube, it rattled my windows and my neighbor's windows just from when it launched outta the tube.
[00:15:33] Eric Goranson: And I went, yeah, that's gonna be a little big. And then it covered like four pieces of property. Went it off overhead. This was like fairly pro level. Like I'm going down to the fair to see him. Mm-hmm and I went, yeah, that was, that was a little much. Now again guys, little firework safety out there. Maybe not let the drunk uncle put the mortars in the thing, because we had that happen one time and he put it in [00:16:00] upside down.
[00:16:02] Eric Goranson: So it launched down into the bottom of the tube and then it bounced up. And went off at about four feet. The other of course, sprayed the crowd with, with, uh, firework. It was not a good plan. Another tip
[00:16:17] Caroline Blazovsky: is make sure the ground is solid and that you don't have damp moist ground. Cause what can happen is the can the tube can fall over and go sideways and the firework and I've done this, um, it's fired off towards a house instead of up towards skies.
[00:16:33] Caroline Blazovsky: So you wanna make sure that ground's solid and dry when you're launching fireworks, but not too dry because then you'll get
[00:16:38] Eric Goranson: fire. Exactly. Yeah, I did that one time and it was not a good thing. I launched it at my buddy's house and I was in high school, did the same thing. My parents wouldn't allow us to have fireworks.
[00:16:49] Eric Goranson: It fell over and it went under the neighbor's garage door cause he had it about a foot up. So the cat could get in and out. And that went in there. We, we had his kids had to go over and knock on the door to get him to open his [00:17:00] garage up. Cuz we didn't want him to burn his garage. Oh, my God. We didn't know if there was a fire in there, but there was just a lot of smoke coming out and I'm like, oh no, no, no, we gotta, we, I'm happy.
[00:17:09] Eric Goranson: We're old enough to do the right thing. What's the chance
[00:17:12] Caroline Blazovsky: 10 years was fire off. What's like, what's the chance if fires off. And it goes under the door, like that's pretty. Yeah. I just
[00:17:18] Eric Goranson: fell down on this garage door was, eight or 10 inches open and it just went and I. Oh, no, not good. Not good. So yeah, I mean, we've already, we already had a kid around here that lost a hand.
[00:17:29] Eric Goranson: So just guys be careful out there with the fireworks, but
[00:17:32] Caroline Blazovsky: if you do wanna like an amazing trip, like I love a place called Phantom fireworks and you go in this place and you are overwhelmed. I mean, it is like the Mecca of. They have everything you want. and I do like this thing called fiery frog.
[00:17:47] Caroline Blazovsky: It's this little frog that you put out. Okay. You light it and it's, this is like not dangerous, but it lights up and it kind of spews up different colors. So we like to put those in the streets. So fiery, frog's gonna cute for the kids, but obviously keep them go [00:18:00] adults only,
[00:18:01] Eric Goranson: nothing wrong with that. Hmm.
[00:18:03] Eric Goranson: That's kind of cool. I that's, those are fun though. I mean, I've done the, the, I've done the, the stuff for the. More kid stuff. I've done that in the past, the sparkler, all that stuff. Yeah. That's kind of fun, but it's good stuff, just be safe with it out there. Make sure that you're, being cool about it because I tell you what things go sideways quick.
[00:18:23] Eric Goranson: I mean, I can't tell you how many buildings I've seen burned down from, from fireworks and that kind of stuff where it's just, it goes sideways
[00:18:30] Caroline Blazovsky: and people lose fingers and hands and it that's just happens. Right? It's all this 4th of July fun, gone bad.
[00:18:37] Eric Goranson: Oh, yeah. Uh, one other thing here too. I wanna mention a couple recalls real quick.
[00:18:42] Eric Goranson: Um, Costco's gotta recall on the sun Villa solar, L E D yes. Umbrellas. I saw
[00:18:49] Intro: it
[00:18:50] Caroline Blazovsky: catches fire. This is gonna, yeah. Yeah.
[00:18:53] Eric Goranson: So recall alert on that one. There's about 400,000 of 'em in the us. So these are the ones that have the lithium ion [00:19:00] batteries. They have the lights down on the inside of the, of the umbrella.
[00:19:04] Eric Goranson: Yeah. The lithium, the batteries could overheat and catch on fire, which isn't good. Um, there's also an MTD Troybuilt space. Save walk behind self-propelled lawnmower that can leak fueled when it's stored in the upright vertical storage position. And we'll catch on fire if it's hot. Oh, wonderful. So that's not good either.
[00:19:25] Eric Goranson: And I'll be honest. Um, I don't store my. Lawnmowers that way, because it's really not usually good to put all the oil in the engine on one side of it like that. Mm-hmm that wasn't really meant for that. So if you really wanna fold up lawnmower, I just go get a battery one.
[00:19:42] Caroline Blazovsky: The other thing is store these things in a shed don't storm in your garage.
[00:19:46] Caroline Blazovsky: If you
[00:19:46] Eric Goranson: can. . Yeah, well, especially the gas powered ones, right? Yeah. I mean, it's not as big a deal with the electric ones. Right. Right. All you're bringing in is some pollen lawn mold and stuff. Yeah. You're just bringing in pollen and mold, but [00:20:00] you know, you're not, you're not doing too much of the damage, but uh, couple little recalls there.
[00:20:05] Eric Goranson: And uh, what are you doing on the 4th of July here? Caroline? You got something going on. We're not gonna talk about that in the show this weekend. Cuz we have a big show. No,
[00:20:13] Caroline Blazovsky: I don't. I, I don't have any plans, which is weird cuz we normally do, but. I'm sure we'll either hit the beach or barbecue or all that stuff.
[00:20:22] Caroline Blazovsky: Yeah. We're
[00:20:22] Eric Goranson: gonna have quarter. Yeah. You're going
[00:20:24] Intro: out. Are you gonna on the boat?
[00:20:26] Eric Goranson: You got the boat. Yeah. You're gonna go on the boat. Hit the boat. Like sweet. Might even try to do that this afternoon. If I got an hour or two in between meetings to, I think I'm gonna
[00:20:33] Caroline Blazovsky: kayak. I think that's the, the kayaks have to go in.
[00:20:36] Caroline Blazovsky: We haven't used them yet, so I'm sure that'll be in the plan.
[00:20:39] Eric Goranson: Yeah, our, our weather's getting cooler, so we'll be good to go there, but, uh, nice. Hey, we got a great show coming up this weekend. This is gonna be a lot of fun. We've got, uh, hour one. We're gonna talk about, do you permit. Should you permit, are you required to permit?
[00:20:54] Eric Goranson: And of course what happens if you don't don't uh, . That was a [00:21:00] request from our, around the house nation group over there as well. And then our number two, we've got military makeover with Monte
[00:21:08] Intro: Woohoo, Mon William. This
[00:21:09] Eric Goranson: is the fun one. Oh, we don't have on the show, but we have the two hosts on there, art and Jennifer, and that they're amazing.
[00:21:16] Eric Goranson: A fun time. Good people. They're great. A great cause. Yeah.
[00:21:21] Caroline Blazovsky: So listen, especially if you watch the show, if you're a fan of the show, you gotta check out this interview. These two are amazing and they know so much about creating great spaces. So
[00:21:30] Eric Goranson: check it out. Yeah. We even talk about, uh, Justin Bieber on that for a minute.
[00:21:36] Caroline Blazovsky: Oh, remember Justin poor Justin. He's got facial paralysis. It's not good. He's had a gold tour. I'm not happy.
[00:21:45] Eric Goranson: Was it from being in the blue hot dog too much. That's the question. the
[00:21:48] Caroline Blazovsky: blue, don't give it away. We talk about the blue hot dog. surprised. Surprised that what is a blue hot
