Vicky Clark

Hello, everyone and welcome to the Pat Accounting Podcast with me, your host, Vicky Clark.

Vicky Clark

I'm going to help you get to grips with your finances, save you lots of money and take the stress out of doing your tax return.

Vicky Clark

So let's get going.

Vicky Clark

Right.

Vicky Clark

Hello everyone.

Vicky Clark

Welcome to this week's Moose Talk.

Vicky Clark

I don't know why we start calling Wind Down Friday.

Vicky Clark

Then we started doing it on a Wednesday and now doing it on a Wednesday lunchtime.

Vicky Clark

So it's not really a wine down because no one's drinking wine.

Vicky Clark

So we should just call that Chat Chat Wednesday or something.

Vicky Clark

We need to come up with a.

Lucy

New name and lady Wag Wednesday.

Vicky Clark

Yes, Chin Wag Wednesday because I don't know why we call it Wine Down Wednesday because we're not drinking wine.

Vicky Clark

But there we go.

Vicky Clark

Every now and again, if you're new to the group, we do have special guests on and just I like to get people on that have new services and things to offer the pet business world.

Vicky Clark

It's not finance related in any way, shape or form, but we like to get people on so we can showcase these things to help members of the group and obviously if you listen on the podcast, to help you guys as well.

Vicky Clark

So without further ado, welcome Lucy to hello to Tinwag Wednesdays.

Vicky Clark

Hi.

Vicky Clark

Good, thank you.

Vicky Clark

Lucy is the founder of Wolf Links and Lucy is going to talk you guys through what Wolf Links is.

Vicky Clark

If you've never heard of it.

Vicky Clark

Never heard of Wolf Links, don't know what it does.

Vicky Clark

We're going to go through that with you all today and how it's going to help your pet business and give you some hints and tips along the way.

Vicky Clark

And yes, we'll, we'll get straight in.

Vicky Clark

So I would do it with a solar Black.

Vicky Clark

What's your name?

Vicky Clark

You come from what you do, People don't know who you are.

Lucy

So I'm Lucy, little old Lucy and I have a pet business directory website which is called Wolf Links and it is aimed at assisting dog businesses to be seen online and also for dog owners to find somewhere suitable, safe and trusted for their dog.

Lucy

That's what it is in a nutshell at the moment.

Lucy

So that's how we've started out.

Lucy

We've got big plans.

Lucy

It does, but essentially in a nutshell, that's what we do.

Vicky Clark

I've just put the website on the bottom in case anyone wants to have a little butchers whilst we're talking.

Vicky Clark

So you mentioned for like a trusted site for dog owners.

Vicky Clark

So if I wanted to find a dog groomer for example, for Franklin, I get go to wolf links, type it like put dog groomer and then my postcode and then list of dog groomers in that area would pop up.

Lucy

Yeah, that's right.

Lucy

So obviously we're smaller, perfectly formed at the moment.

Lucy

It may be if you go on there at the moment, you might put your location in and nothing comes up in your radius.

Lucy

That's just simply because we're new.

Lucy

But in a sense, essentially, yes, that's how the website works.

Lucy

So you would go onto the website, you would use the drop down list to find a service that you want.

Lucy

We cover everything and any kind of dog friendly place or any dog service.

Lucy

We don't list breeders for ethical reasons.

Lucy

But it's not that I'm against ethical breeding at all, it's just that I knew that I wouldn't be able to police it.

Lucy

It's hard enough to police it as it is and you know we have, we have policies around that but with breeding it's just, it'll be so easy for a puppy farmer to list on there and I would never know and I just wouldn't, I just thought it.

Lucy

And there is actually another business that is doing something that's based just around that who I've spoken to in the past who are doing like a really good job of trying to find that.

Lucy

So I was just like, no, for what it's worth, I don't want to take money off a backyard breather.

Lucy

I don't want it.

Lucy

So we just don't do breeders what everyone else we do.

Lucy

So you're.

Lucy

So just go back to, you'll go back to the list and then you can put your location in.

Lucy

It'll just use, it's got a location thing so you can just literally say where you are and then it'll bring up within the radius.

Lucy

So if you want a groomer for example, you probably wouldn't want to go that far.

Lucy

You probably travel a bit further for a physio.

Lucy

If you were, you know, if you were wanting to go on holiday, you were looking for somewhere to eat, you'd put a different location in.

Lucy

But yeah, the functionality, that's how it's quite works.

Vicky Clark

It covers like dog trainers, dog borders, pet sitters, everybody.

Vicky Clark

Just not the breeding side which makes sense because like you say it's hard to, it's hard to police like what they're doing.

Vicky Clark

It's hard.

Vicky Clark

Anyway, yeah, Ellen's put any room for bunny and guinea pig groomers on there.

Vicky Clark

It's.

Vicky Clark

You've got to put it in.

Lucy

It's difficult, actually.

Lucy

You know what, no one's actually ever asked me that before.

Lucy

I think it's probably because we're quite small.

Lucy

We've.

Lucy

We've only got about 200, 200 or so lessons on at the moment.

Lucy

And we did.

Lucy

It was.

Lucy

It is really aimed towards dogs, I must say.

Lucy

But we do have.

Lucy

We do have people on there that might have.

Lucy

That do like pet sitting.

Lucy

So if they do pet sitting, it might.

Lucy

They might do guinea pig setting or rabbit sitting or whatever as well as.

Lucy

But you'd be surprised.

Vicky Clark

There is a lot of people that do like, you know, like the cat cream and rabbit.

Vicky Clark

Could you not have like just a little section for them?

Lucy

It's definitely not off the cards.

Lucy

It's.

Lucy

I'm.

Lucy

The website's built.

Lucy

Sorry, I just.

Lucy

Yeah, no, absolutely.

Lucy

And I think as we grow, as I, as I say we are small, perfectly formed.

Lucy

I am actually learning myself at the moment to build on the website.

Lucy

If it's within my capability, which I'm getting there, you know, I'm learning, then I don't see.

Lucy

I couldn't have like a little pets corner, something like that.

Vicky Clark

It is quite a popular thing.

Vicky Clark

We've come across quite a few people that do like guinea pig and rabbits and other small gales and she boards rabbits and guinea pigs as well.

Vicky Clark

So they're fine.

Vicky Clark

I do.

Vicky Clark

I had a couple of guinea pigs when I was little.

Vicky Clark

I prefer guinea pigs over hamsters.

Lucy

Oh, my God.

Lucy

It's not the little, the little tiny tail thing that freaks me out, but guinea pigs.

Lucy

Robust, aren't they?

Lucy

I have few guinea pigs called Tinsel and Angel.

Lucy

Sorry, I didn't.

Lucy

I'm not doing a very good job of not talking over you.

Vicky Clark

I had Rosie and Toby with mine, but I rescued them.

Vicky Clark

I had about five hamsters and they all bit me.

Vicky Clark

So.

Vicky Clark

With hamsters and they've got like massive teeth as well, so.

Vicky Clark

But yes, Helen, read for Thought for Lucy.

Lucy

I will absolutely not forget that you've said that.

Lucy

Thank you.

Vicky Clark

Fabulous again.

Vicky Clark

You know, the good thing about doing these things is some people might come up with ideas that you've never thought often.

Vicky Clark

Good work.

Vicky Clark

So any.

Vicky Clark

Anything people want to put in is absolutely fine.

Vicky Clark

We'll take it on board.

Lucy

Yeah.

Vicky Clark

So when you said at the moment that's what it does, what is your, I guess, overall plan for Wolflings?

Vicky Clark

What would you want it to be sort of like in two years time?

Lucy

Okay, so I think I'll answer that by telling you how we started.

Lucy

So we.

Lucy

I.

Lucy

I'm a dog owner.

Lucy

I'm not a cat professional.

Lucy

Never claim to be one, will never be one.

Lucy

I'm not a trainer, I'm not a walker.

Lucy

I'm not.

Lucy

I am a dog owner.

Lucy

I've got.

Lucy

Well, so I did have five.

Lucy

I lost one two weeks ago.

Vicky Clark

Oh sure.

Lucy

Which was horrendous.

Lucy

But it.

Lucy

That actually really cemented to me that we really, really need good care for our dogs.

Lucy

It really, really drove it home, actually.

Lucy

But yeah, so anyway, got loads of dogs and when lockdown happened, we saw loads and loads of people on Facebook looking for dog services because obviously everyone got a dog.

Lucy

We had this huge boom and everybody's on Facebook trying to find somewhere.

Lucy

And I, because, because I'm a business person, I was like, I wonder why people are on Facebook doing this.

Lucy

I wonder why they're not using the web.

Lucy

So I had a look around on the web, places like basically typing it in.

Lucy

And I know that it.

Lucy

Google's got better since then.

Lucy

Listing, listing local businesses.

Lucy

But at the time there wasn't really a central place that I could see instantly where you would go to find this sort of information.

Lucy

Now there are, there are places that do it.

Lucy

I just didn't feel that there was anywhere that was doing it the way that I thought it could be done.

Vicky Clark

Really.

Lucy

Well, having said that, I had never built a website before or any civil like that.

Lucy

Yeah.

Lucy

So I really just message.

Lucy

It's actually my sister that came up with the idea and she said, what about a dog directory?

Lucy

And I actually used to have a directory that I had.

Lucy

I built it during lockdown for my local community because I love business, I love local businesses and I just didn't want the community to fall apart when all these businesses closing down during lockdown.

Lucy

So I built a community one.

Lucy

But what happened was I've got adhd.

Lucy

I registered the domain in an old email address.

Lucy

I didn't follow it up.

Lucy

The domain was lost because it missed the reminders and it basically went on to auction.

Lucy

Somebody bought the domain and I lost the whole website.

Lucy

Expensive mistake.

Lucy

But it did sort of like pave the way to do this.

Lucy

So yeah, as I say, I looked around, I didn't really see anywhere that was.

Lucy

That was really doing it.

Lucy

So that sort of got me on this sort of mission to really to find.

Lucy

To create somewhere a one central unified place for dog owners that promoted good dog businesses and where good dog businesses could find clients.

Lucy

So the way I see Wolf links going is we're going to be feeding it a lot more content going to be creating a lot more content.

Lucy

There's going to be a lot more blogging going on.

Lucy

We're going to do a lot more of the videos that we've been doing, which are featuring businesses.

Lucy

Yeah, I'd like to eventually separate out, to have a business hub that's separate, that won't have resources, such as companies like yourself, Vas, any sort of business service for dog professionals that they'd be able to plug into there.

Lucy

Things like templates of business plans, assistance with getting your license in, that sort of thing as well.

Lucy

So basically our original tagline was everything dog.

Lucy

And I think, I think really that's what we're going to go back to.

Lucy

We're going to make it the place for dogs and dog business owners.

Vicky Clark

It makes sense to have one for the businesses and the owners.

Vicky Clark

And you're telling me when I was looking for a dog sitter for Frank and Mabel and Fifi, I just went onto Facebook and did exactly what you just said and was trying to find, like people on there, look at their ratings and stuff.

Vicky Clark

We Googled it and we couldn't, we couldn't.

Vicky Clark

It was just like a list of things and you just think, well, like, where do you start?

Vicky Clark

Even if you looked on Facebook, you'd probably find, you know, a million and one.

Vicky Clark

And you think, well, how do I know?

Lucy

Do you pick?

Vicky Clark

Exactly.

Vicky Clark

So having something specifically central, like, obviously at the time, I don't.

Vicky Clark

This was like a couple years ago, so it didn't exist.

Vicky Clark

But having something central that everyone knows about, then you could go on and say, well, actually, I'll go on here, prime a pet sitter.

Vicky Clark

We know they're checked and it just gives you that a bit more peace of mind as a dog owner then 100%.

Vicky Clark

It's a brilliant idea and I think a few people have tried it in the past, but not really, not really like done it properly, I wouldn't have thought and not pushed it enough.

Vicky Clark

Yeah, it's all right getting, like you said earlier, getting all the dog businesses on there, but you need to drive like members of the public, like me to find it.

Vicky Clark

Because all the pet businesses might know about it, but not necessarily the public that need to use it to find those pet businesses.

Lucy

Yeah.

Lucy

And it's with every directory, it's chicken and egg situation.

Lucy

So you've either got to create a site where there's loads of resources on and then people will go and use it, or you've got to create a site which people are using that businesses then want to go on to so on.

Lucy

Yeah.

Lucy

And I make no bones about the fact that I have made a series of mistakes leading up to this so far.

Lucy

But I, as I mentioned to you before, I've got myself a mentor now who is really helping me.

Lucy

I, you know, I don't take too much of his time.

Lucy

I hope I see him like once a fucking hour and a half every few weeks and he's really helping me to stay, to create a strategy to make sure that both of these needs are met on both sides.

Lucy

It's a huge undertaking, but I love it.

Vicky Clark

It's not something that's going to happen overnight, but.

Vicky Clark

No, no, it going to make mistakes.

Vicky Clark

Like when I started the pet account, I made loads of mistakes to start off with, you know, and it sometimes is trial and error and it does take a long time to get any business off the ground.

Vicky Clark

You know, people say, oh, I don't haven't earned much this year and it's like, oh, I haven't got many clients this year.

Vicky Clark

And it's like, it takes time.

Vicky Clark

Yeah.

Vicky Clark

And I think if this is done properly, like you are doing, I can't see why, you know, in a year's time that people aren't just going, oh, you know, I'm going to go on there and look for it and not think to go on Facebook or Google.

Lucy

Yeah.

Vicky Clark

Helen's asked a very good question, which we're going to get to, but as she's answered it, I'm going to pop it up so you can give her the good news.

Lucy

Can you see, Ellen, I'm about to become your new best friend.

Lucy

It's completely free.

Lucy

It's completely free.

Lucy

Full disclosure, it will not be free forever.

Lucy

When do I envision bringing the subscription in?

Lucy

I really don't know.

Lucy

I'll be really honest.

Lucy

I think, given that we've really got to build the traffic on this site for the foreseeable future, there will be no charge for the directory and that's because, as I said to you, we have got to create a really useful resource for dog owners to come onto.

Lucy

So I want everybody who runs an ethical professional dog business to join for free.

Lucy

Because you don't have to put your card details in, you don't have to.

Lucy

There's absolutely no barrier to entry other than you need to.

Lucy

I will do checks on you, on your business, checks on your social website if you've got one.

Lucy

You do have to upload your insurance and also you can upload your certifications and things like that, but it is free for the time Being it's completely.

Vicky Clark

Free, which is really good.

Vicky Clark

You touched on something I was going to ask you.

Vicky Clark

When people want to join like dog groomers or dog trainers, whatever, what do you check?

Vicky Clark

What do they have to do?

Lucy

So all we ask you for is that you have a valid insurance if you are a.

Lucy

Anything other than a pet border, daycare or kennels.

Lucy

If you want any of those things, you also need a license.

Lucy

You also upload that.

Lucy

And if you are a trainer or behaviorist or include any of those services within your business, we ask that you don't use any aversive or balanced methods.

Lucy

And again that's purely because it.

Lucy

We just, we just cannot be.

Lucy

I just, I would just die if I was promoting anybody who was using any sort of pain.

Lucy

Pain inflicting methods on my dog.

Lucy

So that is set in stone.

Lucy

You have to be an ethical business by our standards.

Lucy

Now are there holes in this?

Lucy

Yes, there absolutely are.

Lucy

I am not going to sit here and say that we have an absolutely watertight business where that is concerned.

Lucy

However, I have put as many steps as I can in place, as many measures I can in place to make sure that we only take on ethical dog businesses.

Lucy

I've taken advice from a clinical animal behaviorist, Rachel Rogers and I've also who helped me write the ethics code and I've also.

Lucy

We have Rachel Bean on board who you probably, probably know of.

Lucy

She's a legend and she's a vet nurse as well of 30 odd years.

Lucy

So she helps advise me on these matters as well.

Lucy

And basically the checks that I carry out is I will take especially for behaviorists and trainers.

Lucy

I will go through your website if you've got one, Facebook, Instagram, most people who are plus you'll know about it.

Lucy

And then I also send them an email to say can you confirm in writing that you don't use any balance methods?

Lucy

So really that's as much as I can do.

Lucy

Any more than that.

Vicky Clark

What can you do?

Lucy

No.

Lucy

And that's another reason for Wolf Links wanting really to become everything dog is because we have no regulation in this industry at all.

Vicky Clark

Yeah.

Lucy

How, how do we find place, how do we find people that we can trust?

Lucy

Well, they can do whatever they want really.

Lucy

So we've got a.

Lucy

We really want to create a community of ethical, caring, kind, professional.

Vicky Clark

Yeah.

Vicky Clark

Businesses.

Vicky Clark

And the thing is you could, you can do a dig on people like you say on social media and go back so far that you, you'd be able to tell if there was a bad egg in it.

Vicky Clark

Yeah.

Vicky Clark

Point Obviously, like you said, never.

Vicky Clark

Nothing's going to be 100.

Vicky Clark

Yeah.

Vicky Clark

You can only do so many checks when things aren't licensed, like dog groomers.

Vicky Clark

You don't want to be like, oh, well, we'll only accept you if you've, you know, you qualify.

Vicky Clark

Because then that hinders the ones that have got more experience over the qualification.

Lucy

Yeah.

Vicky Clark

Like.

Vicky Clark

But then if they don't bring out a license, how.

Vicky Clark

It's just impossible to monitor.

Vicky Clark

You've just got to hope that.

Vicky Clark

Yeah.

Lucy

And it's, and it's difficult.

Lucy

It's difficult.

Lucy

And as a dog owner, it's difficult for you to navigate.

Lucy

Especially if you knew a new dog owner.

Lucy

You don't know anything about the industry.

Lucy

You know, you don't, you might not know what a balanced trainer is or, or whatever.

Lucy

You might not.

Lucy

I mean, I, I did go to uni, I probably shouldn't have gone because it, I don't really know where I went.

Lucy

But I wouldn't value somebody more facing the fact that they've got a degree if they've not got a degree.

Lucy

Like, I, I, to me, experience is really important.

Lucy

I know that there are other, there are other directories that do say that you have to have qualifications and stuff like that and they also say they have to be in business more than a year.

Lucy

And I'm like, well, how do people start?

Lucy

How do we help people get off the ground?

Lucy

How do we help.

Lucy

Well, meaning people get off the ground.

Lucy

If we're saying you've got to have all these qualifications and you've got to have year in business before you can join us.

Lucy

No, I don't, I'm, I'm here to enable businesses not to, you know, it's not for me to decide how good you are, it's for me to decide if you're going to be trusted or not.

Vicky Clark

Yeah.

Vicky Clark

And it's a good way for people to get advertised, especially if they knew to.

Vicky Clark

Especially now, obviously, at the minute it's free.

Vicky Clark

Like, what have you got to lose?

Vicky Clark

You know, at some point roof links is going to grow and grow and grow, you know, ride.

Vicky Clark

Not getting there now and see what happens.

Vicky Clark

I think, yeah, I was at a lucky position when I got frank.

Vicky Clark

I wouldn't have known what to do with regards to like finding a groomer.

Vicky Clark

It was only because obviously I was the pet can at the time that I knew loads of groomers.

Vicky Clark

So you live next to me, I'm going to go to you.

Vicky Clark

But I not had that knowledge whilst I was looking.

Vicky Clark

I wouldn't have had a bloody clue what is classed as a good groomer or a bad groomer?

Vicky Clark

Like, I wouldn't, I wouldn't know.

Lucy

So, yeah, and I'm not, I'm not arrogant or anything.

Lucy

I like, I know there's no substitute for word of mouth.

Lucy

By all means, like, still utilize that as part of your business.

Lucy

What I'm trying to do is help you to be seen online.

Vicky Clark

Yeah.

Lucy

And it's really, really hard.

Lucy

And dog business owners in general, they're not earning mega money.

Lucy

We're not.

Lucy

They're not people who are sitting on, you know, thousands of pounds worth of profit that they can invest in SEO and websites and things like that.

Lucy

So we.

Lucy

Our platform, although it's free at the moment, when, if, if, when we introduce a subscription, it's going to be a manageable monthly contribution rather than something that's going to disable your business or other platforms that I know will take 30% of the booking fee.

Lucy

Just, we just.

Lucy

I'm not here to do that.

Lucy

I'm here to enable.

Vicky Clark

As I say, Louisa, it would be good to be able to use your platform to advocate for industry regulation in the future.

Vicky Clark

Yes.

Lucy

Love this, Louise.

Lucy

Thanks.

Vicky Clark

It's a good point, though.

Lucy

Yeah.

Vicky Clark

I love that there's so many, like, dog groomers, dog walkers, dog trainers popping up here, there and everywhere who've just decided one day they could be a dog groomer and charge £10 for a cockapoo.

Vicky Clark

And you just think, like, there's got to be somewhere where you can differentiate.

Vicky Clark

But then is it down to me as the dog owner, to do my due diligence to find the best dog groomer Rob to sally down the road, who charges a tenner to do me cockapoo.

Vicky Clark

So you can argue that really it's customer as well as the person that's just popping up, doing it for fun and not at it, or has any experience of just deciding to call myself dog groomer tomorrow?

Vicky Clark

But then truly, does the blame lie solely on them or the person that's going to them because it's a tenor?

Lucy

Yeah, well, I think there is an element of privilege here, isn't there?

Lucy

Because.

Lucy

And, and also perspective, because it might be that somebody is trying really hard to break into the dog industry.

Lucy

And I'm thinking, right, well, actually, I've got a little place at home.

Lucy

I can afford to start out doing the tenor ago, because I'm learning.

Lucy

And I think if you set your stall out and you're really honest about it, and that's.

Lucy

That's one thing And I know a bone of contention, excuse the bone.

Lucy

A bone of contention for a lot of dog owners is the dog business owners is people coming in, undercutting them.

Lucy

So I think again, what I would like to see wolf links do is on the business side of things is assist people who are starting out.

Lucy

And although I think the dog industry can be quite a cutthroat place and obviously people have very strong opinions on things, I have personally found so far so many people that are willing to help me and I'd really like to create a culture where we're inviting people, good people into this industry rather than frightening them away.

Vicky Clark

Yeah, well, that's why I did this group is purely to help people on the tax side of things and the finance side of things.

Vicky Clark

Because I knew it was an industry that didn't like doing it.

Vicky Clark

Everyone you talk about, because.

Vicky Clark

Oh, God, no.

Lucy

Yeah.

Vicky Clark

And well, you know, how can I reach a lot of people and not have to like spend all day, every day doing it?

Vicky Clark

Because obviously we've got a job to do.

Vicky Clark

So this group for me was a perfect platform to help people.

Vicky Clark

Maybe not can't afford an accountant or it's just starting out and needs the odd help.

Vicky Clark

So it's been saying.

Vicky Clark

And I think if everyone did, it would be much nicer.

Lucy

Yeah, it's very similar to what I do because we assist with marketing.

Lucy

At most people who go into dog businesses do it for the love of dogs and they want to either groom, walk, massage, Reiki, physio, like whatever they want to do with the dogs, that's what they want to do all day.

Lucy

And I think lots of people sort of go into a little bit blind not realizing they have to run our business as well.

Lucy

Like that is probably only going to be about what, 60 to 70 of what you actually end up doing is a big part of it, which includes running your business.

Lucy

And the finances and the marketing are essential.

Lucy

Essential.

Vicky Clark

Yeah.

Vicky Clark

But the finance is always at the bottom of the pile.

Lucy

Oh, I think marketing might even be low than that.

Vicky Clark

I feel like I could, I could.

Vicky Clark

Yeah, it gotta be at the bottom.

Vicky Clark

It's gotta be.

Lucy

You could fight it out if you want.

Vicky Clark

I think my dad.

Vicky Clark

But then it's one of those way for me, it's frustrating because it, you know, it's like the finance side is so, so important.

Vicky Clark

Like you're not gonna have a business without looking at your finances.

Vicky Clark

Yeah.

Vicky Clark

It's always the things left to last.

Vicky Clark

You know, I always say this on other ones.

Vicky Clark

You know, mainly you're obsessed with Looking at the bank accounts not because it's like shitloads of money in the ex prison but to understand that whenever we get any money in it's straight in the pots.

Vicky Clark

It's all managed every day.

Vicky Clark

And sometimes I can say someone like what's in your bank account?

Vicky Clark

What's in your business bank account?

Vicky Clark

I don't know.

Vicky Clark

How much money did you earn today?

Vicky Clark

I don't know.

Vicky Clark

How much money did you earn last week?

Vicky Clark

I don't know.

Vicky Clark

And it's you're like, you've got to understand it, like you've got to look at it.

Vicky Clark

I think sometimes it's just one of those scary things that you know when you get like a bill or you know something's coming out your bank so you just don't look at your bank and hope the best.

Lucy

Quite manage your business finance the same way.

Lucy

Do you manage it?

Lucy

No.

Vicky Clark

Like he's not at the end of the month.

Vicky Clark

Dare I go and look at my bank account?

Vicky Clark

Is it going to be the plus or the minus as well?

Vicky Clark

I'll just wait until next week.

Vicky Clark

But you can't do that.

Vicky Clark

The business side and same the marketing.

Vicky Clark

Like some people say I've run out of clients.

Vicky Clark

I have not had any new clients for like a couple of weeks.

Vicky Clark

Well when did you last advertise?

Vicky Clark

Oh like six months ago because I didn't need to at that point.

Vicky Clark

Well there's the issue like you've got to continually market.

Vicky Clark

You can't stop because then after dry period what did you have to start that marketing advertising up again?

Lucy

Yeah, I think lockdown was a, you know, a great lesson to us all in that sense that you know, you could be in your purple patch and then bang.

Lucy

I mean I hope it would never be any kind of pandemic again but that came from complete left field.

Lucy

We don't know what the next thing is around the corner and I think if you're not working on your business you are going to be the first to fall when something, you know, something does happen.

Vicky Clark

Trump has just been elected so you know, who knows what's going.

Lucy

Yeah, that's not that I'm not going.

Vicky Clark

To get into any political debate on.

Lucy

Here but it's important because these things do have an effect on us.

Lucy

I mean by no means you would need to go into the ins and outs of of Donald Trump but it's just an example of what you need to, you need to have an all seeing eye on these things or like your thing, one of the pulse necessarily get involved in it but and same applies with marketing as well.

Lucy

But it is something that people shy away from because they hear words like algorithms and they think, oh, I don't.

Vicky Clark

Know what that means.

Vicky Clark

I haven't got a scooby doo about SEOs and all that sort of.

Vicky Clark

I just don't, I just don't get it.

Vicky Clark

I don't get involved.

Vicky Clark

That's like Lee's bag.

Vicky Clark

I just like, like I have no clue.

Vicky Clark

When I first started I paid someone money to do the website.

Vicky Clark

I paid someone to do the copywriting, who's amazing but she's gone back to something else.

Vicky Clark

So I was gutted.

Vicky Clark

But I had someone do the website, someone do the copyright, do all the SEO stuff and I just thought, yes, it was expensive.

Vicky Clark

I think the website at the time cost me like 1500 quid and the copyright was probably the same and I thought, yeah, three grand just when I'm starting out.

Vicky Clark

But then I've got so much traffic free the website that it paid for itself anyway.

Vicky Clark

Yeah.

Lucy

So again, I mean you're.

Lucy

The differences with your business though is.

Vicky Clark

That you or there was.

Lucy

Yeah, yeah.

Lucy

And your business is a dog.

Lucy

Business is somebody who, your typical new dog business owner is somebody who has not got experience any of this.

Lucy

They don't have necessarily have the cash to do anything like that either.

Lucy

And they are a one man band, you know, like the chimney sweep on Mary Poppins.

Lucy

When it comes along when there's like, that's what they have.

Vicky Clark

Mine started off little on me and my computer had no clue what I was doing.

Lucy

I was kind of fund to pay someone to do that.

Lucy

I think a lot of my job is starting out don't have that.

Vicky Clark

That is true.

Vicky Clark

I was working in the police at the same time so I did have that as like a cushion.

Vicky Clark

But then a lot of people do still have their normal jobs and then do the walk.

Vicky Clark

Another board, another grooming on the side.

Lucy

Yeah.

Lucy

And I've got.

Lucy

So that's why I love doing this because I just love people that do that.

Lucy

That's what I'm doing.

Lucy

Yeah.

Lucy

And I think, I think this, what, what we're trying to do is make sure that people have help in that area and give them a leg up.

Lucy

Because what wolf links, what I'm not really talked about on the wolf link side, like.

Lucy

Yeah, it's all good.

Lucy

You, you know, the dog owner goes in, types in, finds you.

Lucy

When your profile comes up, it's like a mini website.

Lucy

So we've tailored the profile so that you have like once when somebody Clicks on your box on Sally's Dog Grooming and clicks on it and it comes up.

Lucy

You've got a banner, you've got your logo, license number if you require it, number of years in business, you've got a bio, there's a gallery, you can put all your accreditations on there, your locations on there, you can take reviews on that, you can take DMs on there, you can.

Lucy

It's got all the links to your socials and your website if you've got one.

Lucy

So if you don't have a website, which a lot of dog businesses don't because they operate through Facebook and Instagram.

Lucy

If you haven't got a website, this will act like a website for you.

Lucy

If you do have a website, it acts as a backlink.

Vicky Clark

Yeah.

Lucy

Which is really valuable.

Lucy

Anyone who knows the tiniest little bit about websites knows that if you've got a link somewhere else to your website, it's good for your website SEO.

Lucy

So that's, you know, we just really want to help people get that leg.

Vicky Clark

Up initially looked and the whole page is so easy to read and everything's there for the person to go and say, right, yeah, that's checked.

Vicky Clark

Yeah, we can look at that, look at pictures, get the information, all you see, all the license numbers and whatever.

Vicky Clark

So it's like a little mini Facebook page.

Vicky Clark

Yeah, a mini website.

Vicky Clark

So it's a millie website then, you know, join Wolf Links, you get it for free and there you go, mini grabs, done it yourself.

Vicky Clark

Has all the information on there that people need and then it's the step.

Lucy

And with the plans that we've got in place, the benefit of having a website and Wolf Links is that if we become a household name so my, my vision for Woof Links will be like, and I hate TripAdvisor by the way because I'm from the hospitality industry.

Lucy

But when it used to be that when.

Lucy

Well some people, right, Auto Trader, like if you sell any car the first thing you would do is go auto Trader.

Lucy

So my aim for Wolf Links is to be I need something for my dog.

Lucy

Ah, Woof Links.

Lucy

Like, like no brainer Wolf Links.

Lucy

So if you are on our site and you don't have a website, then somebody, you're very, very specific target audience is going to find you and that is so difficult to achieve on your own on Google as a one man band dog business owner that's not like, you know, really savvy with your marketing.

Lucy

We, you're, we're basically narrowing that big, big, big funnel of People down to find your ideal customer and then they just find you.

Lucy

Yeah, and they can just directly just go, yeah, send that person a message or.

Lucy

Yeah, go on their Facebook or.

Lucy

Yeah, you can.

Lucy

You can literally press a button and it will call them straight away as well.

Vicky Clark

That's good.

Vicky Clark

Louise has put.

Vicky Clark

Do you have a link for your website?

Vicky Clark

Can people not see this?

Vicky Clark

It should be there.

Lucy

I can see it.

Lucy

Wolflinks.co.uk I'm gonna have a check now.

Vicky Clark

Cause I'm like, is it not working?

Vicky Clark

I thought people could see it.

Vicky Clark

I can see it.

Vicky Clark

Yeah.

Vicky Clark

But you're on the same thing as me, though.

Lucy

Oh.

Vicky Clark

Oh, no.

Vicky Clark

Oh, I know, Yeah, I know it is there.

Vicky Clark

Louise is there.

Vicky Clark

Wolflinks.co.uk Lucy will also put some stuff in the group as well.

Vicky Clark

Any links and things that anyone's going to need if you want to go and do it.

Vicky Clark

But yes, please get on there, get yourself registered and let's grow the site and make it.

Vicky Clark

Thing is, we can make what we want it to be, but we need people on there.

Vicky Clark

So share it with your dog business pals.

Vicky Clark

Guinea pig business pals.

Lucy

Give me a minute to learn how to create a new web page.

Vicky Clark

We've got.

Vicky Clark

Oh, Helen's just registered but not sure how to put me business on.

Vicky Clark

Is there like a help section on there?

Vicky Clark

People get stuck.

Lucy

Just email me.

Vicky Clark

Yeah, just email Lucy.

Vicky Clark

I'll put all our details, I say, on the group and tag everything in there so everyone's got the details.

Vicky Clark

But get yourself on there.

Vicky Clark

It's going to be worth doing.

Vicky Clark

It's free.

Vicky Clark

And I say it's a little mini website and your target audience is going to be going to that page.

Vicky Clark

You know, someone who doesn't have a dog ain't going to be visiting that page.

Vicky Clark

So, yeah, do you know what I mean?

Vicky Clark

Like, when we go to Crufts, you know, it's hard for us at Crufts because there's none people there that just like dogs or have a dog.

Vicky Clark

So there's a mixture of businesses and just people going, what you doing?

Vicky Clark

Look at the title.

Lucy

I always liken it to.

Lucy

And being in the.

Lucy

Let's say you're working in the Manchester United shop and a busload of City supporters came up like, yeah, oh, yeah, there's a hundred people outside, but they ain't going to come in.

Vicky Clark

No, no.

Lucy

And that's.

Lucy

That's what.

Lucy

That's what I think people, a lot of people worry about with their social media and their following, they think, oh, I've only got like 25 followers or whatever and it's like, yeah, but if they all buy from you, then woohoo.

Vicky Clark

25 who want your services better than 5,000 who don't.

Lucy

Yeah, exactly.

Vicky Clark

Louise is going to share it for you on a pet professional support group.

Lucy

Oh, thank you Louise.

Vicky Clark

There we go.

Vicky Clark

We'll share, share, like get everyone on there, let it grow and see what we can turn it into and then maybe in a year's time.

Lucy

The cool thing about having a directory is the more people that are on it, the better it actually is.

Vicky Clark

Yeah.

Lucy

So it might seem like it's more competitive but actually the, if you, if you're one of early adopters, firstly the way the website works is the more hits you get and the more reviews you get, the higher you go.

Lucy

So if you're getting, if you're getting people to put reviews on your Facebook and your Google, just copy and paste over to offlets as well.

Lucy

It's going to boost your ranking.

Lucy

So if someone does come on, let's say in a year's time and someone types in Dogrimmer in Newcastle and there's 10 that come up, if you, if you've been there a longer time and you've got the reviews, you're going to come to the top.

Vicky Clark

Right.

Vicky Clark

So it works in the same premises like yeah, Google.

Vicky Clark

Yeah, yeah, Fab.

Vicky Clark

Fabulous.

Vicky Clark

Well, I've got a lot of questions, a bit of food for thought on the categories of animals, so go.

Vicky Clark

Yat agrees, Cat agrees.

Vicky Clark

A lot of pond.

Vicky Clark

No.

Vicky Clark

And yeah, like I said before, we'll get Lucy to put all our info on the group and on the page and so you can, you can access it at any time but get yourselves on there, share it around and let's get it built.

Vicky Clark

It'll be interesting to know how many you had registered before we did this live and then a week after and see if it's a big difference.

Vicky Clark

We'll tell you what we're going to do is, yeah, keep an eye on it.

Vicky Clark

We'll get Lucy back and see how it's gone.

Vicky Clark

But please share it if you've got any questions.

Vicky Clark

I said Lucy's details will be on the group and you can contact us directly.

Vicky Clark

She's also on Instagram if you fan and you can go on Insta and yeah, ask away and help her out.

Vicky Clark

Thank you very much for coming.

Vicky Clark

I know it's been a bit taken, its time to get you on but yes, next week I'll be back with Lee doing some sort of topic on some sort of financing stuff.

Vicky Clark

Yes, we do.

Vicky Clark

We never, we just pick the topics on the day.

Vicky Clark

But yes, we do have a new package coming out for self assessments which we briefly discussed last week for making Tax Digital that's coming into play in 2026.

Vicky Clark

So keep your eyes peeled for that because that's going to come out very soon.

Vicky Clark

Other than that, thank you guys for joining us.
