Hello, everyone and welcome to the Pat Accounting Podcast with me, your host, Vicky Clark.
Vicky ClarkI'm going to help you get to grips with your finances, save you lots of money and take the stress out of doing your tax return.
Vicky ClarkSo let's get going.
Vicky ClarkRight.
Vicky ClarkHello everyone.
Vicky ClarkWelcome to this week's Moose Talk.
Vicky ClarkI don't know why we start calling Wind Down Friday.
Vicky ClarkThen we started doing it on a Wednesday and now doing it on a Wednesday lunchtime.
Vicky ClarkSo it's not really a wine down because no one's drinking wine.
Vicky ClarkSo we should just call that Chat Chat Wednesday or something.
Vicky ClarkWe need to come up with a.
LucyNew name and lady Wag Wednesday.
Vicky ClarkYes, Chin Wag Wednesday because I don't know why we call it Wine Down Wednesday because we're not drinking wine.
Vicky ClarkBut there we go.
Vicky ClarkEvery now and again, if you're new to the group, we do have special guests on and just I like to get people on that have new services and things to offer the pet business world.
Vicky ClarkIt's not finance related in any way, shape or form, but we like to get people on so we can showcase these things to help members of the group and obviously if you listen on the podcast, to help you guys as well.
Vicky ClarkSo without further ado, welcome Lucy to hello to Tinwag Wednesdays.
Vicky ClarkHi.
Vicky ClarkGood, thank you.
Vicky ClarkLucy is the founder of Wolf Links and Lucy is going to talk you guys through what Wolf Links is.
Vicky ClarkIf you've never heard of it.
Vicky ClarkNever heard of Wolf Links, don't know what it does.
Vicky ClarkWe're going to go through that with you all today and how it's going to help your pet business and give you some hints and tips along the way.
Vicky ClarkAnd yes, we'll, we'll get straight in.
Vicky ClarkSo I would do it with a solar Black.
Vicky ClarkWhat's your name?
Vicky ClarkYou come from what you do, People don't know who you are.
LucySo I'm Lucy, little old Lucy and I have a pet business directory website which is called Wolf Links and it is aimed at assisting dog businesses to be seen online and also for dog owners to find somewhere suitable, safe and trusted for their dog.
LucyThat's what it is in a nutshell at the moment.
LucySo that's how we've started out.
LucyWe've got big plans.
LucyIt does, but essentially in a nutshell, that's what we do.
Vicky ClarkI've just put the website on the bottom in case anyone wants to have a little butchers whilst we're talking.
Vicky ClarkSo you mentioned for like a trusted site for dog owners.
Vicky ClarkSo if I wanted to find a dog groomer for example, for Franklin, I get go to wolf links, type it like put dog groomer and then my postcode and then list of dog groomers in that area would pop up.
LucyYeah, that's right.
LucySo obviously we're smaller, perfectly formed at the moment.
LucyIt may be if you go on there at the moment, you might put your location in and nothing comes up in your radius.
LucyThat's just simply because we're new.
LucyBut in a sense, essentially, yes, that's how the website works.
LucySo you would go onto the website, you would use the drop down list to find a service that you want.
LucyWe cover everything and any kind of dog friendly place or any dog service.
LucyWe don't list breeders for ethical reasons.
LucyBut it's not that I'm against ethical breeding at all, it's just that I knew that I wouldn't be able to police it.
LucyIt's hard enough to police it as it is and you know we have, we have policies around that but with breeding it's just, it'll be so easy for a puppy farmer to list on there and I would never know and I just wouldn't, I just thought it.
LucyAnd there is actually another business that is doing something that's based just around that who I've spoken to in the past who are doing like a really good job of trying to find that.
LucySo I was just like, no, for what it's worth, I don't want to take money off a backyard breather.
LucyI don't want it.
LucySo we just don't do breeders what everyone else we do.
LucySo you're.
LucySo just go back to, you'll go back to the list and then you can put your location in.
LucyIt'll just use, it's got a location thing so you can just literally say where you are and then it'll bring up within the radius.
LucySo if you want a groomer for example, you probably wouldn't want to go that far.
LucyYou probably travel a bit further for a physio.
LucyIf you were, you know, if you were wanting to go on holiday, you were looking for somewhere to eat, you'd put a different location in.
LucyBut yeah, the functionality, that's how it's quite works.
Vicky ClarkIt covers like dog trainers, dog borders, pet sitters, everybody.
Vicky ClarkJust not the breeding side which makes sense because like you say it's hard to, it's hard to police like what they're doing.
Vicky ClarkIt's hard.
Vicky ClarkAnyway, yeah, Ellen's put any room for bunny and guinea pig groomers on there.
Vicky ClarkIt's.
Vicky ClarkYou've got to put it in.
LucyIt's difficult, actually.
LucyYou know what, no one's actually ever asked me that before.
LucyI think it's probably because we're quite small.
LucyWe've.
LucyWe've only got about 200, 200 or so lessons on at the moment.
LucyAnd we did.
LucyIt was.
LucyIt is really aimed towards dogs, I must say.
LucyBut we do have.
LucyWe do have people on there that might have.
LucyThat do like pet sitting.
LucySo if they do pet sitting, it might.
LucyThey might do guinea pig setting or rabbit sitting or whatever as well as.
LucyBut you'd be surprised.
Vicky ClarkThere is a lot of people that do like, you know, like the cat cream and rabbit.
Vicky ClarkCould you not have like just a little section for them?
LucyIt's definitely not off the cards.
LucyIt's.
LucyI'm.
LucyThe website's built.
LucySorry, I just.
LucyYeah, no, absolutely.
LucyAnd I think as we grow, as I, as I say we are small, perfectly formed.
LucyI am actually learning myself at the moment to build on the website.
LucyIf it's within my capability, which I'm getting there, you know, I'm learning, then I don't see.
LucyI couldn't have like a little pets corner, something like that.
Vicky ClarkIt is quite a popular thing.
Vicky ClarkWe've come across quite a few people that do like guinea pig and rabbits and other small gales and she boards rabbits and guinea pigs as well.
Vicky ClarkSo they're fine.
Vicky ClarkI do.
Vicky ClarkI had a couple of guinea pigs when I was little.
Vicky ClarkI prefer guinea pigs over hamsters.
LucyOh, my God.
LucyIt's not the little, the little tiny tail thing that freaks me out, but guinea pigs.
LucyRobust, aren't they?
LucyI have few guinea pigs called Tinsel and Angel.
LucySorry, I didn't.
LucyI'm not doing a very good job of not talking over you.
Vicky ClarkI had Rosie and Toby with mine, but I rescued them.
Vicky ClarkI had about five hamsters and they all bit me.
Vicky ClarkSo.
Vicky ClarkWith hamsters and they've got like massive teeth as well, so.
Vicky ClarkBut yes, Helen, read for Thought for Lucy.
LucyI will absolutely not forget that you've said that.
LucyThank you.
Vicky ClarkFabulous again.
Vicky ClarkYou know, the good thing about doing these things is some people might come up with ideas that you've never thought often.
Vicky ClarkGood work.
Vicky ClarkSo any.
Vicky ClarkAnything people want to put in is absolutely fine.
Vicky ClarkWe'll take it on board.
LucyYeah.
Vicky ClarkSo when you said at the moment that's what it does, what is your, I guess, overall plan for Wolflings?
Vicky ClarkWhat would you want it to be sort of like in two years time?
LucyOkay, so I think I'll answer that by telling you how we started.
LucySo we.
LucyI.
LucyI'm a dog owner.
LucyI'm not a cat professional.
LucyNever claim to be one, will never be one.
LucyI'm not a trainer, I'm not a walker.
LucyI'm not.
LucyI am a dog owner.
LucyI've got.
LucyWell, so I did have five.
LucyI lost one two weeks ago.
Vicky ClarkOh sure.
LucyWhich was horrendous.
LucyBut it.
LucyThat actually really cemented to me that we really, really need good care for our dogs.
LucyIt really, really drove it home, actually.
LucyBut yeah, so anyway, got loads of dogs and when lockdown happened, we saw loads and loads of people on Facebook looking for dog services because obviously everyone got a dog.
LucyWe had this huge boom and everybody's on Facebook trying to find somewhere.
LucyAnd I, because, because I'm a business person, I was like, I wonder why people are on Facebook doing this.
LucyI wonder why they're not using the web.
LucySo I had a look around on the web, places like basically typing it in.
LucyAnd I know that it.
LucyGoogle's got better since then.
LucyListing, listing local businesses.
LucyBut at the time there wasn't really a central place that I could see instantly where you would go to find this sort of information.
LucyNow there are, there are places that do it.
LucyI just didn't feel that there was anywhere that was doing it the way that I thought it could be done.
Vicky ClarkReally.
LucyWell, having said that, I had never built a website before or any civil like that.
LucyYeah.
LucySo I really just message.
LucyIt's actually my sister that came up with the idea and she said, what about a dog directory?
LucyAnd I actually used to have a directory that I had.
LucyI built it during lockdown for my local community because I love business, I love local businesses and I just didn't want the community to fall apart when all these businesses closing down during lockdown.
LucySo I built a community one.
LucyBut what happened was I've got adhd.
LucyI registered the domain in an old email address.
LucyI didn't follow it up.
LucyThe domain was lost because it missed the reminders and it basically went on to auction.
LucySomebody bought the domain and I lost the whole website.
LucyExpensive mistake.
LucyBut it did sort of like pave the way to do this.
LucySo yeah, as I say, I looked around, I didn't really see anywhere that was.
LucyThat was really doing it.
LucySo that sort of got me on this sort of mission to really to find.
LucyTo create somewhere a one central unified place for dog owners that promoted good dog businesses and where good dog businesses could find clients.
LucySo the way I see Wolf links going is we're going to be feeding it a lot more content going to be creating a lot more content.
LucyThere's going to be a lot more blogging going on.
LucyWe're going to do a lot more of the videos that we've been doing, which are featuring businesses.
LucyYeah, I'd like to eventually separate out, to have a business hub that's separate, that won't have resources, such as companies like yourself, Vas, any sort of business service for dog professionals that they'd be able to plug into there.
LucyThings like templates of business plans, assistance with getting your license in, that sort of thing as well.
LucySo basically our original tagline was everything dog.
LucyAnd I think, I think really that's what we're going to go back to.
LucyWe're going to make it the place for dogs and dog business owners.
Vicky ClarkIt makes sense to have one for the businesses and the owners.
Vicky ClarkAnd you're telling me when I was looking for a dog sitter for Frank and Mabel and Fifi, I just went onto Facebook and did exactly what you just said and was trying to find, like people on there, look at their ratings and stuff.
Vicky ClarkWe Googled it and we couldn't, we couldn't.
Vicky ClarkIt was just like a list of things and you just think, well, like, where do you start?
Vicky ClarkEven if you looked on Facebook, you'd probably find, you know, a million and one.
Vicky ClarkAnd you think, well, how do I know?
LucyDo you pick?
Vicky ClarkExactly.
Vicky ClarkSo having something specifically central, like, obviously at the time, I don't.
Vicky ClarkThis was like a couple years ago, so it didn't exist.
Vicky ClarkBut having something central that everyone knows about, then you could go on and say, well, actually, I'll go on here, prime a pet sitter.
Vicky ClarkWe know they're checked and it just gives you that a bit more peace of mind as a dog owner then 100%.
Vicky ClarkIt's a brilliant idea and I think a few people have tried it in the past, but not really, not really like done it properly, I wouldn't have thought and not pushed it enough.
Vicky ClarkYeah, it's all right getting, like you said earlier, getting all the dog businesses on there, but you need to drive like members of the public, like me to find it.
Vicky ClarkBecause all the pet businesses might know about it, but not necessarily the public that need to use it to find those pet businesses.
LucyYeah.
LucyAnd it's with every directory, it's chicken and egg situation.
LucySo you've either got to create a site where there's loads of resources on and then people will go and use it, or you've got to create a site which people are using that businesses then want to go on to so on.
LucyYeah.
LucyAnd I make no bones about the fact that I have made a series of mistakes leading up to this so far.
LucyBut I, as I mentioned to you before, I've got myself a mentor now who is really helping me.
LucyI, you know, I don't take too much of his time.
LucyI hope I see him like once a fucking hour and a half every few weeks and he's really helping me to stay, to create a strategy to make sure that both of these needs are met on both sides.
LucyIt's a huge undertaking, but I love it.
Vicky ClarkIt's not something that's going to happen overnight, but.
Vicky ClarkNo, no, it going to make mistakes.
Vicky ClarkLike when I started the pet account, I made loads of mistakes to start off with, you know, and it sometimes is trial and error and it does take a long time to get any business off the ground.
Vicky ClarkYou know, people say, oh, I don't haven't earned much this year and it's like, oh, I haven't got many clients this year.
Vicky ClarkAnd it's like, it takes time.
Vicky ClarkYeah.
Vicky ClarkAnd I think if this is done properly, like you are doing, I can't see why, you know, in a year's time that people aren't just going, oh, you know, I'm going to go on there and look for it and not think to go on Facebook or Google.
LucyYeah.
Vicky ClarkHelen's asked a very good question, which we're going to get to, but as she's answered it, I'm going to pop it up so you can give her the good news.
LucyCan you see, Ellen, I'm about to become your new best friend.
LucyIt's completely free.
LucyIt's completely free.
LucyFull disclosure, it will not be free forever.
LucyWhen do I envision bringing the subscription in?
LucyI really don't know.
LucyI'll be really honest.
LucyI think, given that we've really got to build the traffic on this site for the foreseeable future, there will be no charge for the directory and that's because, as I said to you, we have got to create a really useful resource for dog owners to come onto.
LucySo I want everybody who runs an ethical professional dog business to join for free.
LucyBecause you don't have to put your card details in, you don't have to.
LucyThere's absolutely no barrier to entry other than you need to.
LucyI will do checks on you, on your business, checks on your social website if you've got one.
LucyYou do have to upload your insurance and also you can upload your certifications and things like that, but it is free for the time Being it's completely.
Vicky ClarkFree, which is really good.
Vicky ClarkYou touched on something I was going to ask you.
Vicky ClarkWhen people want to join like dog groomers or dog trainers, whatever, what do you check?
Vicky ClarkWhat do they have to do?
LucySo all we ask you for is that you have a valid insurance if you are a.
LucyAnything other than a pet border, daycare or kennels.
LucyIf you want any of those things, you also need a license.
LucyYou also upload that.
LucyAnd if you are a trainer or behaviorist or include any of those services within your business, we ask that you don't use any aversive or balanced methods.
LucyAnd again that's purely because it.
LucyWe just, we just cannot be.
LucyI just, I would just die if I was promoting anybody who was using any sort of pain.
LucyPain inflicting methods on my dog.
LucySo that is set in stone.
LucyYou have to be an ethical business by our standards.
LucyNow are there holes in this?
LucyYes, there absolutely are.
LucyI am not going to sit here and say that we have an absolutely watertight business where that is concerned.
LucyHowever, I have put as many steps as I can in place, as many measures I can in place to make sure that we only take on ethical dog businesses.
LucyI've taken advice from a clinical animal behaviorist, Rachel Rogers and I've also who helped me write the ethics code and I've also.
LucyWe have Rachel Bean on board who you probably, probably know of.
LucyShe's a legend and she's a vet nurse as well of 30 odd years.
LucySo she helps advise me on these matters as well.
LucyAnd basically the checks that I carry out is I will take especially for behaviorists and trainers.
LucyI will go through your website if you've got one, Facebook, Instagram, most people who are plus you'll know about it.
LucyAnd then I also send them an email to say can you confirm in writing that you don't use any balance methods?
LucySo really that's as much as I can do.
LucyAny more than that.
Vicky ClarkWhat can you do?
LucyNo.
LucyAnd that's another reason for Wolf Links wanting really to become everything dog is because we have no regulation in this industry at all.
Vicky ClarkYeah.
LucyHow, how do we find place, how do we find people that we can trust?
LucyWell, they can do whatever they want really.
LucySo we've got a.
LucyWe really want to create a community of ethical, caring, kind, professional.
Vicky ClarkYeah.
Vicky ClarkBusinesses.
Vicky ClarkAnd the thing is you could, you can do a dig on people like you say on social media and go back so far that you, you'd be able to tell if there was a bad egg in it.
Vicky ClarkYeah.
Vicky ClarkPoint Obviously, like you said, never.
Vicky ClarkNothing's going to be 100.
Vicky ClarkYeah.
Vicky ClarkYou can only do so many checks when things aren't licensed, like dog groomers.
Vicky ClarkYou don't want to be like, oh, well, we'll only accept you if you've, you know, you qualify.
Vicky ClarkBecause then that hinders the ones that have got more experience over the qualification.
LucyYeah.
Vicky ClarkLike.
Vicky ClarkBut then if they don't bring out a license, how.
Vicky ClarkIt's just impossible to monitor.
Vicky ClarkYou've just got to hope that.
Vicky ClarkYeah.
LucyAnd it's, and it's difficult.
LucyIt's difficult.
LucyAnd as a dog owner, it's difficult for you to navigate.
LucyEspecially if you knew a new dog owner.
LucyYou don't know anything about the industry.
LucyYou know, you don't, you might not know what a balanced trainer is or, or whatever.
LucyYou might not.
LucyI mean, I, I did go to uni, I probably shouldn't have gone because it, I don't really know where I went.
LucyBut I wouldn't value somebody more facing the fact that they've got a degree if they've not got a degree.
LucyLike, I, I, to me, experience is really important.
LucyI know that there are other, there are other directories that do say that you have to have qualifications and stuff like that and they also say they have to be in business more than a year.
LucyAnd I'm like, well, how do people start?
LucyHow do we help people get off the ground?
LucyHow do we help.
LucyWell, meaning people get off the ground.
LucyIf we're saying you've got to have all these qualifications and you've got to have year in business before you can join us.
LucyNo, I don't, I'm, I'm here to enable businesses not to, you know, it's not for me to decide how good you are, it's for me to decide if you're going to be trusted or not.
Vicky ClarkYeah.
Vicky ClarkAnd it's a good way for people to get advertised, especially if they knew to.
Vicky ClarkEspecially now, obviously, at the minute it's free.
Vicky ClarkLike, what have you got to lose?
Vicky ClarkYou know, at some point roof links is going to grow and grow and grow, you know, ride.
Vicky ClarkNot getting there now and see what happens.
Vicky ClarkI think, yeah, I was at a lucky position when I got frank.
Vicky ClarkI wouldn't have known what to do with regards to like finding a groomer.
Vicky ClarkIt was only because obviously I was the pet can at the time that I knew loads of groomers.
Vicky ClarkSo you live next to me, I'm going to go to you.
Vicky ClarkBut I not had that knowledge whilst I was looking.
Vicky ClarkI wouldn't have had a bloody clue what is classed as a good groomer or a bad groomer?
Vicky ClarkLike, I wouldn't, I wouldn't know.
LucySo, yeah, and I'm not, I'm not arrogant or anything.
LucyI like, I know there's no substitute for word of mouth.
LucyBy all means, like, still utilize that as part of your business.
LucyWhat I'm trying to do is help you to be seen online.
Vicky ClarkYeah.
LucyAnd it's really, really hard.
LucyAnd dog business owners in general, they're not earning mega money.
LucyWe're not.
LucyThey're not people who are sitting on, you know, thousands of pounds worth of profit that they can invest in SEO and websites and things like that.
LucySo we.
LucyOur platform, although it's free at the moment, when, if, if, when we introduce a subscription, it's going to be a manageable monthly contribution rather than something that's going to disable your business or other platforms that I know will take 30% of the booking fee.
LucyJust, we just.
LucyI'm not here to do that.
LucyI'm here to enable.
Vicky ClarkAs I say, Louisa, it would be good to be able to use your platform to advocate for industry regulation in the future.
Vicky ClarkYes.
LucyLove this, Louise.
LucyThanks.
Vicky ClarkIt's a good point, though.
LucyYeah.
Vicky ClarkI love that there's so many, like, dog groomers, dog walkers, dog trainers popping up here, there and everywhere who've just decided one day they could be a dog groomer and charge £10 for a cockapoo.
Vicky ClarkAnd you just think, like, there's got to be somewhere where you can differentiate.
Vicky ClarkBut then is it down to me as the dog owner, to do my due diligence to find the best dog groomer Rob to sally down the road, who charges a tenner to do me cockapoo.
Vicky ClarkSo you can argue that really it's customer as well as the person that's just popping up, doing it for fun and not at it, or has any experience of just deciding to call myself dog groomer tomorrow?
Vicky ClarkBut then truly, does the blame lie solely on them or the person that's going to them because it's a tenor?
LucyYeah, well, I think there is an element of privilege here, isn't there?
LucyBecause.
LucyAnd, and also perspective, because it might be that somebody is trying really hard to break into the dog industry.
LucyAnd I'm thinking, right, well, actually, I've got a little place at home.
LucyI can afford to start out doing the tenor ago, because I'm learning.
LucyAnd I think if you set your stall out and you're really honest about it, and that's.
LucyThat's one thing And I know a bone of contention, excuse the bone.
LucyA bone of contention for a lot of dog owners is the dog business owners is people coming in, undercutting them.
LucySo I think again, what I would like to see wolf links do is on the business side of things is assist people who are starting out.
LucyAnd although I think the dog industry can be quite a cutthroat place and obviously people have very strong opinions on things, I have personally found so far so many people that are willing to help me and I'd really like to create a culture where we're inviting people, good people into this industry rather than frightening them away.
Vicky ClarkYeah, well, that's why I did this group is purely to help people on the tax side of things and the finance side of things.
Vicky ClarkBecause I knew it was an industry that didn't like doing it.
Vicky ClarkEveryone you talk about, because.
Vicky ClarkOh, God, no.
LucyYeah.
Vicky ClarkAnd well, you know, how can I reach a lot of people and not have to like spend all day, every day doing it?
Vicky ClarkBecause obviously we've got a job to do.
Vicky ClarkSo this group for me was a perfect platform to help people.
Vicky ClarkMaybe not can't afford an accountant or it's just starting out and needs the odd help.
Vicky ClarkSo it's been saying.
Vicky ClarkAnd I think if everyone did, it would be much nicer.
LucyYeah, it's very similar to what I do because we assist with marketing.
LucyAt most people who go into dog businesses do it for the love of dogs and they want to either groom, walk, massage, Reiki, physio, like whatever they want to do with the dogs, that's what they want to do all day.
LucyAnd I think lots of people sort of go into a little bit blind not realizing they have to run our business as well.
LucyLike that is probably only going to be about what, 60 to 70 of what you actually end up doing is a big part of it, which includes running your business.
LucyAnd the finances and the marketing are essential.
LucyEssential.
Vicky ClarkYeah.
Vicky ClarkBut the finance is always at the bottom of the pile.
LucyOh, I think marketing might even be low than that.
Vicky ClarkI feel like I could, I could.
Vicky ClarkYeah, it gotta be at the bottom.
Vicky ClarkIt's gotta be.
LucyYou could fight it out if you want.
Vicky ClarkI think my dad.
Vicky ClarkBut then it's one of those way for me, it's frustrating because it, you know, it's like the finance side is so, so important.
Vicky ClarkLike you're not gonna have a business without looking at your finances.
Vicky ClarkYeah.
Vicky ClarkIt's always the things left to last.
Vicky ClarkYou know, I always say this on other ones.
Vicky ClarkYou know, mainly you're obsessed with Looking at the bank accounts not because it's like shitloads of money in the ex prison but to understand that whenever we get any money in it's straight in the pots.
Vicky ClarkIt's all managed every day.
Vicky ClarkAnd sometimes I can say someone like what's in your bank account?
Vicky ClarkWhat's in your business bank account?
Vicky ClarkI don't know.
Vicky ClarkHow much money did you earn today?
Vicky ClarkI don't know.
Vicky ClarkHow much money did you earn last week?
Vicky ClarkI don't know.
Vicky ClarkAnd it's you're like, you've got to understand it, like you've got to look at it.
Vicky ClarkI think sometimes it's just one of those scary things that you know when you get like a bill or you know something's coming out your bank so you just don't look at your bank and hope the best.
LucyQuite manage your business finance the same way.
LucyDo you manage it?
LucyNo.
Vicky ClarkLike he's not at the end of the month.
Vicky ClarkDare I go and look at my bank account?
Vicky ClarkIs it going to be the plus or the minus as well?
Vicky ClarkI'll just wait until next week.
Vicky ClarkBut you can't do that.
Vicky ClarkThe business side and same the marketing.
Vicky ClarkLike some people say I've run out of clients.
Vicky ClarkI have not had any new clients for like a couple of weeks.
Vicky ClarkWell when did you last advertise?
Vicky ClarkOh like six months ago because I didn't need to at that point.
Vicky ClarkWell there's the issue like you've got to continually market.
Vicky ClarkYou can't stop because then after dry period what did you have to start that marketing advertising up again?
LucyYeah, I think lockdown was a, you know, a great lesson to us all in that sense that you know, you could be in your purple patch and then bang.
LucyI mean I hope it would never be any kind of pandemic again but that came from complete left field.
LucyWe don't know what the next thing is around the corner and I think if you're not working on your business you are going to be the first to fall when something, you know, something does happen.
Vicky ClarkTrump has just been elected so you know, who knows what's going.
LucyYeah, that's not that I'm not going.
Vicky ClarkTo get into any political debate on.
LucyHere but it's important because these things do have an effect on us.
LucyI mean by no means you would need to go into the ins and outs of of Donald Trump but it's just an example of what you need to, you need to have an all seeing eye on these things or like your thing, one of the pulse necessarily get involved in it but and same applies with marketing as well.
LucyBut it is something that people shy away from because they hear words like algorithms and they think, oh, I don't.
Vicky ClarkKnow what that means.
Vicky ClarkI haven't got a scooby doo about SEOs and all that sort of.
Vicky ClarkI just don't, I just don't get it.
Vicky ClarkI don't get involved.
Vicky ClarkThat's like Lee's bag.
Vicky ClarkI just like, like I have no clue.
Vicky ClarkWhen I first started I paid someone money to do the website.
Vicky ClarkI paid someone to do the copywriting, who's amazing but she's gone back to something else.
Vicky ClarkSo I was gutted.
Vicky ClarkBut I had someone do the website, someone do the copyright, do all the SEO stuff and I just thought, yes, it was expensive.
Vicky ClarkI think the website at the time cost me like 1500 quid and the copyright was probably the same and I thought, yeah, three grand just when I'm starting out.
Vicky ClarkBut then I've got so much traffic free the website that it paid for itself anyway.
Vicky ClarkYeah.
LucySo again, I mean you're.
LucyThe differences with your business though is.
Vicky ClarkThat you or there was.
LucyYeah, yeah.
LucyAnd your business is a dog.
LucyBusiness is somebody who, your typical new dog business owner is somebody who has not got experience any of this.
LucyThey don't have necessarily have the cash to do anything like that either.
LucyAnd they are a one man band, you know, like the chimney sweep on Mary Poppins.
LucyWhen it comes along when there's like, that's what they have.
Vicky ClarkMine started off little on me and my computer had no clue what I was doing.
LucyI was kind of fund to pay someone to do that.
LucyI think a lot of my job is starting out don't have that.
Vicky ClarkThat is true.
Vicky ClarkI was working in the police at the same time so I did have that as like a cushion.
Vicky ClarkBut then a lot of people do still have their normal jobs and then do the walk.
Vicky ClarkAnother board, another grooming on the side.
LucyYeah.
LucyAnd I've got.
LucySo that's why I love doing this because I just love people that do that.
LucyThat's what I'm doing.
LucyYeah.
LucyAnd I think, I think this, what, what we're trying to do is make sure that people have help in that area and give them a leg up.
LucyBecause what wolf links, what I'm not really talked about on the wolf link side, like.
LucyYeah, it's all good.
LucyYou, you know, the dog owner goes in, types in, finds you.
LucyWhen your profile comes up, it's like a mini website.
LucySo we've tailored the profile so that you have like once when somebody Clicks on your box on Sally's Dog Grooming and clicks on it and it comes up.
LucyYou've got a banner, you've got your logo, license number if you require it, number of years in business, you've got a bio, there's a gallery, you can put all your accreditations on there, your locations on there, you can take reviews on that, you can take DMs on there, you can.
LucyIt's got all the links to your socials and your website if you've got one.
LucySo if you don't have a website, which a lot of dog businesses don't because they operate through Facebook and Instagram.
LucyIf you haven't got a website, this will act like a website for you.
LucyIf you do have a website, it acts as a backlink.
Vicky ClarkYeah.
LucyWhich is really valuable.
LucyAnyone who knows the tiniest little bit about websites knows that if you've got a link somewhere else to your website, it's good for your website SEO.
LucySo that's, you know, we just really want to help people get that leg.
Vicky ClarkUp initially looked and the whole page is so easy to read and everything's there for the person to go and say, right, yeah, that's checked.
Vicky ClarkYeah, we can look at that, look at pictures, get the information, all you see, all the license numbers and whatever.
Vicky ClarkSo it's like a little mini Facebook page.
Vicky ClarkYeah, a mini website.
Vicky ClarkSo it's a millie website then, you know, join Wolf Links, you get it for free and there you go, mini grabs, done it yourself.
Vicky ClarkHas all the information on there that people need and then it's the step.
LucyAnd with the plans that we've got in place, the benefit of having a website and Wolf Links is that if we become a household name so my, my vision for Woof Links will be like, and I hate TripAdvisor by the way because I'm from the hospitality industry.
LucyBut when it used to be that when.
LucyWell some people, right, Auto Trader, like if you sell any car the first thing you would do is go auto Trader.
LucySo my aim for Wolf Links is to be I need something for my dog.
LucyAh, Woof Links.
LucyLike, like no brainer Wolf Links.
LucySo if you are on our site and you don't have a website, then somebody, you're very, very specific target audience is going to find you and that is so difficult to achieve on your own on Google as a one man band dog business owner that's not like, you know, really savvy with your marketing.
LucyWe, you're, we're basically narrowing that big, big, big funnel of People down to find your ideal customer and then they just find you.
LucyYeah, and they can just directly just go, yeah, send that person a message or.
LucyYeah, go on their Facebook or.
LucyYeah, you can.
LucyYou can literally press a button and it will call them straight away as well.
Vicky ClarkThat's good.
Vicky ClarkLouise has put.
Vicky ClarkDo you have a link for your website?
Vicky ClarkCan people not see this?
Vicky ClarkIt should be there.
LucyI can see it.
LucyWolflinks.co.uk I'm gonna have a check now.
Vicky ClarkCause I'm like, is it not working?
Vicky ClarkI thought people could see it.
Vicky ClarkI can see it.
Vicky ClarkYeah.
Vicky ClarkBut you're on the same thing as me, though.
LucyOh.
Vicky ClarkOh, no.
Vicky ClarkOh, I know, Yeah, I know it is there.
Vicky ClarkLouise is there.
Vicky ClarkWolflinks.co.uk Lucy will also put some stuff in the group as well.
Vicky ClarkAny links and things that anyone's going to need if you want to go and do it.
Vicky ClarkBut yes, please get on there, get yourself registered and let's grow the site and make it.
Vicky ClarkThing is, we can make what we want it to be, but we need people on there.
Vicky ClarkSo share it with your dog business pals.
Vicky ClarkGuinea pig business pals.
LucyGive me a minute to learn how to create a new web page.
Vicky ClarkWe've got.
Vicky ClarkOh, Helen's just registered but not sure how to put me business on.
Vicky ClarkIs there like a help section on there?
Vicky ClarkPeople get stuck.
LucyJust email me.
Vicky ClarkYeah, just email Lucy.
Vicky ClarkI'll put all our details, I say, on the group and tag everything in there so everyone's got the details.
Vicky ClarkBut get yourself on there.
Vicky ClarkIt's going to be worth doing.
Vicky ClarkIt's free.
Vicky ClarkAnd I say it's a little mini website and your target audience is going to be going to that page.
Vicky ClarkYou know, someone who doesn't have a dog ain't going to be visiting that page.
Vicky ClarkSo, yeah, do you know what I mean?
Vicky ClarkLike, when we go to Crufts, you know, it's hard for us at Crufts because there's none people there that just like dogs or have a dog.
Vicky ClarkSo there's a mixture of businesses and just people going, what you doing?
Vicky ClarkLook at the title.
LucyI always liken it to.
LucyAnd being in the.
LucyLet's say you're working in the Manchester United shop and a busload of City supporters came up like, yeah, oh, yeah, there's a hundred people outside, but they ain't going to come in.
Vicky ClarkNo, no.
LucyAnd that's.
LucyThat's what.
LucyThat's what I think people, a lot of people worry about with their social media and their following, they think, oh, I've only got like 25 followers or whatever and it's like, yeah, but if they all buy from you, then woohoo.
Vicky Clark25 who want your services better than 5,000 who don't.
LucyYeah, exactly.
Vicky ClarkLouise is going to share it for you on a pet professional support group.
LucyOh, thank you Louise.
Vicky ClarkThere we go.
Vicky ClarkWe'll share, share, like get everyone on there, let it grow and see what we can turn it into and then maybe in a year's time.
LucyThe cool thing about having a directory is the more people that are on it, the better it actually is.
Vicky ClarkYeah.
LucySo it might seem like it's more competitive but actually the, if you, if you're one of early adopters, firstly the way the website works is the more hits you get and the more reviews you get, the higher you go.
LucySo if you're getting, if you're getting people to put reviews on your Facebook and your Google, just copy and paste over to offlets as well.
LucyIt's going to boost your ranking.
LucySo if someone does come on, let's say in a year's time and someone types in Dogrimmer in Newcastle and there's 10 that come up, if you, if you've been there a longer time and you've got the reviews, you're going to come to the top.
Vicky ClarkRight.
Vicky ClarkSo it works in the same premises like yeah, Google.
Vicky ClarkYeah, yeah, Fab.
Vicky ClarkFabulous.
Vicky ClarkWell, I've got a lot of questions, a bit of food for thought on the categories of animals, so go.
Vicky ClarkYat agrees, Cat agrees.
Vicky ClarkA lot of pond.
Vicky ClarkNo.
Vicky ClarkAnd yeah, like I said before, we'll get Lucy to put all our info on the group and on the page and so you can, you can access it at any time but get yourselves on there, share it around and let's get it built.
Vicky ClarkIt'll be interesting to know how many you had registered before we did this live and then a week after and see if it's a big difference.
Vicky ClarkWe'll tell you what we're going to do is, yeah, keep an eye on it.
Vicky ClarkWe'll get Lucy back and see how it's gone.
Vicky ClarkBut please share it if you've got any questions.
Vicky ClarkI said Lucy's details will be on the group and you can contact us directly.
Vicky ClarkShe's also on Instagram if you fan and you can go on Insta and yeah, ask away and help her out.
Vicky ClarkThank you very much for coming.
Vicky ClarkI know it's been a bit taken, its time to get you on but yes, next week I'll be back with Lee doing some sort of topic on some sort of financing stuff.
Vicky ClarkYes, we do.
Vicky ClarkWe never, we just pick the topics on the day.
Vicky ClarkBut yes, we do have a new package coming out for self assessments which we briefly discussed last week for making Tax Digital that's coming into play in 2026.
