Speaker BWelcome to the elevated edit podcast.
Speaker BI'm your host, Blakely Ramsey.
Speaker BAnd I'm sure there's going to be a lot of tension today, and so I wanted to talk about something that we can control, that we are 100% in control of, and that is our energy and our thoughts.
Speaker BAnd for me, I used to be someone who thought that people who talked about, oh, well, you need to, you know, practice putting out good energy.
Speaker BYou need to practice working on your mindset, working on your thoughts.
Speaker BI was like, okay, that's great.
Speaker BLike, I'm glad that you can sit around and meditate and have positive thoughts and do all these things and visualize, but, like, I'm over here actually working.
Speaker BAnd what I have realized over the last couple of years is that that mindset was actually holding me back.
Speaker BAnd now that I am working on putting out better energy and working on my thoughts and working on my subconscious mind, it actually allows me to work smarter and not harder, which has transformed my life.
Speaker BMy work now comes from a place of joy.
Speaker BAnd, yes, I still want to work hard.
Speaker BI still want to be challenged, but I no longer feel like I'm bashing my head against a wall trying to just get stuff done every day.
Speaker BAnd so it has.
Speaker BIt's been a massive shift for me.
Speaker BSo I want to read a stat really quick before we dive too far into this conversation.
Speaker BSo, it is estimated that the average person has around 60,000 to 70,000 thoughts every day.
Speaker BOkay.
Speaker BOf those thoughts, approximately 80% are thought to be negative, and about 95% are repetitive, meaning they are the same thoughts we had the day before.
Speaker BSo really think about that for a second.
Speaker B80% of our thoughts are negative, and 95% are repetitive.
Speaker BSo the vast majority of our thoughts every single day are negative thoughts that we have every single day.
Speaker BAnd when I started researching this and diving into it, I was like, wow, I I want to just see if that is true for me.
Speaker BAnd obviously, you can't, especially if you've got any kind of ADHD or anything like that.
Speaker BYou cannot count how many thoughts you have in a day.
Speaker BI can't even count how many thoughts I have in a minute because there's way too many.
Speaker BAll the tabs are open all the time.
Speaker BUm, but I would just kind of try to be aware of my thoughts, and I realized that I always went to the negative.
Speaker BLike, I would wake up in the morning and be like, ugh, I've got to do this and this and this today, and I have to talk to that person, and, ugh, I still have to do that and that and that and, oh, great, another bill.
Speaker BAnd, oh, gosh, it's cold outside, and I forgot to let my car.
Speaker BOh, my gosh, I gotta get gas.
Speaker BYou know, it's just like, literally, like, when I would, like, kind of step back and pay attention, I was like, oh, my goodness.
Speaker BI literally have negative thoughts all day long.
Speaker BI would have a couple positive thoughts here and there, but something actively had to happen for me to have a positive thought.
Speaker BLike, I had to see a puppy or I had to, you know, get a new client or whatever.
Speaker BIt was like I was waiting for the world to give me the happy thought.
Speaker BAnd so, look, I am not perfect by this by any means at this point, but I have been really working on trying to have positive thoughts and have good thoughts, and I don't like the word good for me, I'm going to just say positive because I feel like good is so subjective and it has been such a game changer for me.
Speaker BI mentioned this in an episode a while back, but for me, when I am thinking positive thoughts and I am looking for positive things, I find them.
Speaker BAnd the reverse is also true.
Speaker BWhen I'm thinking negative thoughts, I'm subconsciously looking for negative things.
Speaker BAnd so I find them.
Speaker BAnd I'm finding now that I can be in the exact same situation as a situation I would have been a year ago, and my perspective on it looks completely different.
Speaker BAnd the result ends up being completely different because I show up as a different person.
Speaker BBecause I show up expecting good things to happen.
Speaker BI show up expecting people to be happy to see me.
Speaker BI show up expecting to leave with a new prospect or a new idea or a new thought.
Speaker BAnd when I expect for those things to happen, they do, versus in the past, I would be like, oh, my gosh, I'm probably going to be late, and I'd be late, or I'm going to snag my dress, and I'd snag my dress, or I'd be like, I'm going to get there and see somebody that I don't like.
Speaker BAnd I'd get there and I'd see somebody that I didn't like and I would be stuck talking to them for an hour.
Speaker BAnd so it has been like such a monumental shift.
Speaker BIt's been a lot of work, but it's been worth it to kind of just practice shifting my mindset.
Speaker BAnd I try to now, like, before I get out of the car, before I go in somewhere, I will be like, okay, what kind of energy am I bringing into this environment?
Speaker BLike, am I stressed and worried and anxious?
Speaker BBecause if I walk in a room, stress, worried and anxious, then I'm going to attract stress, worried and anxious.
Speaker BSo the most anxious person in the room is going to, like, zip to me and they're going to cling to me and they're going to throw all their negativity and energy on me.
Speaker BWe're going to throw my negativity and energy on them, and then we're just going to stay there in that conversation versus if I take a beat before I get out of the car, put on some good music, and I go, okay, this situation is going to be positive and encouraging, and I'm going to get out of the car and only the best things are going to happen to me.
Speaker BI'm going to be given the best offers, I'm going to meet the best people.
Speaker BAnd it's not magic.
Speaker BIt's like, I definitely don't think or believe anything like that.
Speaker BNo offense, if you do.
Speaker BI don't personally think that.
Speaker BI just think that I end up showing up as a better person.
Speaker BI walked in the room with better energy, and so people look at me and the people with good energy are instantly attracted to me.
Speaker BSo they come over and they want to have a conversation.
Speaker BWe get to talking and, oh, my goodness, we have either a mutual connection or a mutual goal, and I can help them and they can help me.
Speaker BAnd then I leave the situation with a new friend and an exciting new idea and, you know, a new network, and the whole situation changes based on how I walked into the room and as a full circle.
Speaker BThat is what we can control.
Speaker BSo I have really tried to work on the my thoughts and work on just being aware of my thoughts.
Speaker BI'm not necessarily always going to change them in the moment.
Speaker BI mean, sometimes I get really worked up over the dumbest things and I will not be able to get off of it.
Speaker BBut I'm at least trying to be aware now of the fact that I do that.
Speaker BAnd I try to not sit in it too long because I definitely don't want to encourage and I also don't want to do this myself.
Speaker BI don't want to pretend like negative things don't happen and I don't want to have negative emotions.
Speaker BBut instead of sitting in that negative emotion, I now try to figure out, okay, what can I do about it?
Speaker BLike, what kind of person can I be to either resolve this problem or change this problem?
Speaker BOr what kind of fresh perspective can I bring to this situation?
Speaker BOr what kind of good energy can I bring?
Speaker BOr whatever it is?
Speaker BI try to shift the thought that I'm having, the negative thought that I'm having on its head and look at it from a different way.
Speaker BAnd you know what?
Speaker BIf you shift it and it's still a crappy situation, then it's still a crappy situation and you just let yourself feel that emotion.
Speaker BBut for me, I'm trying to not dwell in the negativity because I did for so long, and I just got more and more negativity back.
Speaker BAnd I touched base on the subconscious mind for a little bit, but I want to give a little stat.
Speaker BAnd I'm not going to go too far into this because people way smarter than me should be explaining this to you, but 95% of our daily thoughts and actions are controlled by our subconscious programming.
Speaker BSo it is controlled by things that we are not even aware of.
Speaker BLike, we're not even aware that we're having a lot of these thoughts.
Speaker BWe are just running essentially on autopilot.
Speaker BAnd I think that's why it's so important and it's so impactful for us to just kind of have, like, I call them my energy audits.
Speaker BAnd once again, like, I try to slow down a little bit.
Speaker BIt doesn't have to be a full, like, oh, I meditate for 30 minutes every day.
Speaker BAin't nobody got time for that.
Speaker BI'm sure somebody does have time for that.
Speaker BI could have time for that if I made it a priority.
Speaker BBut for me, it's usually, like I said, two or three minutes in the car, or maybe before I get out of bed, I wake up with negative thoughts.
Speaker BAnd that's one place I've really been trying to work on.
Speaker BIt's like waking up and just automatically, before I'm even fully awake, automatically running through my to do list for the day and all the things that I just don't freaking want to do.
Speaker BSo I try to stop myself and be like, okay, hold up.
Speaker BBefore I think about the negative stuff.
Speaker BI'm very thankful for my husband.
Speaker BI'm very thankful for our cats.
Speaker BI'm thankful for my friends.
Speaker BI'm thankful for my job.
Speaker BI'm thankful for my family.
Speaker BI'm thankful for our house.
Speaker BAnd then by the time I get to the end of my list, I'm like, wait, what was my problem again?
Speaker BBecause when you start thinking about all the good things you have and all the positive things you have, it just kind of erases all of the other usually negative, small things.
Speaker BBecause I don't know about you, but I will start thinking about a problem.
Speaker BAnd it does not matter how small or minute the hard word to say out loud.
Speaker BI type it all the time, but I don't know if I've ever said it out loud.
Speaker BAll of those problems, I will literally be so laser focused on them, I won't be able to see things happening around me like good things happening around me.
Speaker BI won't pay attention to them because I'll be so laser focused on those little tiny thing that I probably can't even control.
Speaker BAnd that leads to my next point, is focus on what you can control.
Speaker BSo that is another thing that has been huge for me in the last year.
Speaker BI think that's probably been one of my biggest, like, keys to growth is focusing on what, on what I can control and ignoring the rest.
Speaker BAnd what I have found to is that when I focus on what I can control, so when a problem or an issue comes to my awareness, I go, okay, is this something that I have any control over, no matter how big or how small?
Speaker BIf the answer is blakely, you don't have any control over this situation, then I'm not going to worry about it.
Speaker BAnd look, this is another one of those things that it's not easy when you first start working on this, but when you start analyzing things from that perspective, it allows you to not worry about, literally things that are not in your control.
Speaker BSo in situations like that, I go, okay, which part of this can I control?
Speaker BAnd I just take those little sections and I focus on that.
Speaker BAnd for me, I feel like it doesn't eliminate the problems.
Speaker BThe problems are still there, but it helps me shift my perspective to one that makes me feel like I am empowered and one that makes me feel like I actually do have a little control because I'm doing everything that I can.
Speaker BI'm doing the best that I can do in the given situation.
Speaker BAnd look, that's not always easy, especially with the environment that we're currently in, with the election and a lot of things that could come from the election.
Speaker BThere are a lot of scary thoughts.
Speaker BThere are a lot of things that we do need to be aware of and we do need to advocate for and we do need to be concerned with.
Speaker BBut I have tried to not just sit in the worry because once again, when I sit in the worry, I am thinking just millions of negative thoughts and then I start subconsciously looking for negative things to happen and negative things happen versus when I go, okay, this is really scary for me.
Speaker BI personally don't have control over the result of this.
Speaker BSo I'm going to focus on what I can.
Speaker BI'm going to make sure that I am taking good care of myself.
Speaker BI'm going to make sure that I stay off of social media because I don't want to be influenced by everyone else's opinions and their lack of self awareness.
Speaker BI am not going to watch the news.
Speaker BI am going to control what I can.
Speaker BI'm going to be an advocate for my values, but I am not going to dwell in the negativity because there's nothing that I can do about it.
Speaker BAnd for me, that is not coming from a place of like, well, I'm just going to sit around and be passive in life.
Speaker BNo, I'm definitely going to stand up for what I believe in and I'm going to advocate for things.
Speaker BAnd y'all know I'm a huge advocate for change.
Speaker BI'm always going to advocate for change, especially if it's something that affects me personally.
Speaker BThat's just me being completely blunt and a little selfish.
Speaker BBut if it's something that affects me, I'm definitely going to advocate for it.
Speaker BBut I'm going to give 100% to what I can control and then I'm not going to worry about the rest of it because life is too freaking short and I don't want to sit around and be worried about stuff that may or may not happen.
Speaker BAnd that is, I know it's so much easier said than done, especially when everything feels so loud and everything feels so aggressive, but that has helped me so much.
Speaker BAnd I know I talked about this in episode four on the, on social media and its impact on us, but I really want to press again that we have got to be careful of what we consume.
Speaker BSo be it.
Speaker BMedia, music, social media, the people that we're around in person, they all impact our energy and our mindset.
Speaker BNow with the work that I've been doing, I can, like, if somebody walks up to me and they are a negative, like, inherently in a negative mindset thinking negative thoughts, like, I'm just like, instantly, like, I've got to get away from this person.
Speaker BI don't tell them that I do it with love, I do it with respect.
Speaker BBut like, I'm not going to let you drag me down.
Speaker BAnd used to, I would, because I am an empath.
Speaker BEmpath.
Speaker BAn empath.
Speaker BI would want to sit with that person in their misery and I would want to take some of that misery away from them, which I do like that trait in myself.
Speaker BBut what I'm learning now is that doesn't help either one of us because then we're both in a negative situation.
Speaker BWe're both in a negative mindset.
Speaker BAnd so I have gotten to where I will just walk away.
Speaker BI will unfriend on Facebook.
Speaker BI will unfollow.
Speaker BLike, I just don't want to be around negative energy.
Speaker BAnd once again, that is not meant to be.
Speaker BI don't want people to be passive.
Speaker BBut get back to your family, get back to the things you can control.
Speaker BGet back to your life.
Speaker BWe can only do so much.
Speaker BAnd for me, sitting around and complaining about things on social media is just not a good use of our time.
Speaker BLike, if you're going to get on social media, share a Bible verse, share a positive quote, share something fun, share something exciting.
Speaker BYes, still advocate for what you want.
Speaker BBut I try to remember that when I'm on social media and I see something that I don't agree with.
Speaker BAnd these last couple of months, there have been a lot of things I didn't agree with, but I either unfollow them or I just keep scrolling.
Speaker BBecause when has arguing with someone on Facebook ever changed their mind?
Speaker BIt's not going to.
Speaker BDon't get caught up in that.
Speaker BI used to do that.
Speaker BI would get caught up in a negative cycle.
Speaker BI would comment, and then I'd be going back and forth with this random person that I didn't even know their name, I just knew their Instagram handle, arguing back and forth with literally somebody I don't even know.
Speaker BLike, how was that productive for anything?
Speaker BHow did that change anything?
Speaker BAnd I look, I am judging myself in this situation and I am giving advice from things that I have certainly done wrong.
Speaker BBut it's so much, life is so much easier when we just let the negative energy go.
Speaker BLet the negative people do their thing.
Speaker BI'm not saying be complacent.
Speaker BI'm not saying be naive.
Speaker BI'm not saying be uneducated and unaware.
Speaker BBut control what you can control.
Speaker BControl and be a light and life will get a little bit better and you'll make the people around you around you, you'll make their life a little bit better.
Speaker BAnd that's what it's all about.
Speaker BSo, okay, I hope I stay on task.
Speaker BI did not look, I only looked at my script for two of those quotes and I just rambled on the rest.
Speaker BSo I hope that I gave you all some kind of information that you can go out into the world and I use to feel better, make somebody else feel better, maybe encourage you to have a couple more positive thoughts, a couple less negative thoughts.
Speaker BAnd just remember that no matter what happens in any situation, we can only control what we can control.
Speaker BWe can choose to choose our perspective.
Speaker BWe can choose to love others even when we don't agree with them.
Speaker BAnd we can choose to be there for our family.
Speaker BAnd remember that at the end of the day, they're the only thing that matters.
Speaker BOkay, I'm done sounding like a hallmark card for the day.
Speaker BThank you so much for joining me in this episode.
Speaker BAnd I really do hope that you'll have a good rest of the day, a good rest of the week, and that this next couple of weeks is not too rough on all of us and that we can hopefully maybe, I don't know, find middle ground.
Speaker BI think I might be dreaming on that one.
Speaker BI might be wanting a little bit too much, but I think maybe it's possible.
Speaker BI don't know.
Speaker BWe'll see.
