Speaker AThis is your host, Neal Reyes, and.
Speaker CI want to welcome you to the Executive Perspective. For years, I struggled to answer the question, what do you do for a living? Why? Because most people who ask only expect to hear one thing. I'm an executive with a deep level of understanding of business, operations, leadership, and technology. I'm also the president and founder of a worldwide ministry and CEO. CEO of an executive coaching and consulting firm. My number one passion is people, and I receive significant gratitude in life from sowing into others and encouraging them as they grow to achieve their fullest potential. If you're a high performance individual like me, or you're simply ready to take your business, leadership or inner potential to the next level, then strap in because I'm locked in and all in. This is the Executive perspective.
Speaker AHey, what's up, champions? This is your host, Neal Reyes, and I want to welcome you back to the Executive Perspective. Today we're talking about something that I think is extremely important and impacts large amounts of people. Today I want to talk with you about what I refer to as as the hamster wheel of indecision. I'm going to say that again. Our topic that we're talking about today is the hamster wheel of indecision. You know, this podcast, the executive perspective, focuses on three main areas. I say this in every episode we do. We focus on leadership, business strategy, and personal development. Oh, we have a guest in the studio today. We have little Livy. Livy's one of my dogs, and she loves spending time in the studio. So if you see her or she barks, please excuse her. But that being said, this podcast focuses on three main areas. Like I said, leadership, business strategy, and personal development. And when I think about all three of those areas, in fact, when I think about really every area of life, and especially in leadership and especially in business, one of the things that I see impacts people in tremendous ways and is indecision. In other words, people have a hard time being decisive. People have a hard time making commitments, but people have a hard time with indecision. In other words, they're stuck or they're locked between two places. It's between where they've been and where they're trying to get to. But they can't move forward. And the reason why they can't move forward is because they're locked behind walls of indecision. Now, there's different reasons for that, but a lot of times it shows up in their personal life. It'll bleed over into their leadership, and it shows up in their everyday business, whether if they're the business owner or whether if they're someone who's just working within an organization, and this impacts them tremendously. The other thing about indecision is if you're a person who doesn't struggle with indecision, but you're part of a team that depends on other people to help you get your job done or to help contribute to the cause, you can still be impacted by the indecision of others. Think about this for a second. How many times have you had a project or something that you were working on, maybe an initiative or a project that was handed down, but it feels like you run into problem after problem, you're missing milestone after milestone, or you just can't seem to get the needle moving Man, I'm going to tell you that indecision is oftentimes the roadblock to those situations. Either people are afraid to commit, they're scared to commit, or they just don't know how to commit, or they're just simply blocked with indecision. And there's some different reasons why. And so today we're going to do a quick dip in and out. Like I said, we're going to dip in and out of this today quickly. But I'm going to give you some quick things that you can help to focus on. So that way as I can help you get in your needle moving again. You know, we say all the time on this podcast on the executive perspective, we have one direction we move, and that is forward and upward. And so today I want to help give you that nudge that you need. If you've been stuck in place and if you've been struggling with indecision, you're going to recognize this. As I begin to mention some of these things, the first thing I want to talk with you about is that indecision is energy without direction. I'm going to say that again because that's strong right there. Indecision is energy without direction. Man, that is strong right there. Just like a hamster wheel. You can run hard but stay in the same spot. You know, if you've ever looked at a little hamster and you look in their cage and they have their little hamster wheel, you know, those little things are so cute when they're in there and they're booking it and they're fun to watch. But if you want to see someone on a hamster wheel, you don't got to go to a pet shop or you don't have to buy your own hamster and put in his little cage with the hamster wheel. All you got to do is walk into the office. Man, I hate to say that, but that is plaguing businesses and leaders all across the world. And it doesn't just plague them inside the walls of the office. It plagues them in their own personal lives as well. They're stuck between indecision of do they. Do they buy that new thing or do they invest in that new way, or do they go to that on that vacation or do they do this or do they do that? You know, sometimes when it comes to indecision and people live in struggle on a more narrow way, meaning they struggle living with indecision about what to eat. Holy smokes. Think about that. How many times have you known somebody maybe you Are that somebody where when lunchtime comes up or dinner time comes up, they know they're hungry. Their body's telling them they're hungry, but they just can't seem to decide what they want. Or oftentimes people will look to the person next to them, whether it's their spouse or whether it's their co worker or their friend, and they'll ask them, what do I want to eat today? Now, there are people who are laughing as I say that, because, you know, that's you. And this is not a ding on you, but I'm helping to move you forward. Because like I said on this podcast, we have one direction we move. And which direction is that, class? That's exactly right. We move forward and upward. So when you walk into the office or you see someone struggling with indecision, it's just like being on that hamster wheel. And the thing about the hamster wheel is that no matter how much energy you put into that thing, no matter how hard you run, you can run and give everything you have to where you don't have any more to give to where you're just wiped out and wore out, and you'll find that you stay in the same place. Indecision keeps you busy, but it doesn't build anything. I'm going to say that again. Indecision keeps you busy, but it doesn't build anything. You know, oftentimes on this podcast, I talk about the difference between being busy and being productive. You know, being busy, that's when you're busy, busy, busy, and you got a lot of stuff you're doing. But it's possible to be very busy, accomplish nothing. I'd rather be productive. Productivity and being productive will always trump being busy. Productivity always trumps being busy. Now, here's your first leadership truth bomb. Your first leadership truth bomb is the hustle doesn't matter if it's happening in circles. Whoo. That's a powerful one right there. The hustle doesn't matter if it's happening in circles. In other words, no matter how much you hustle, no matter how much you strive, no matter how much energy you invest and put in that thing, whether it's conscious energy or unconscious energy. Oh, man, I should do a podcast, maybe just on that. The difference between conscious energy and unconscious energy, what does that mean? Well, conscious energy is when you're purposely focusing, applying energy towards something to accomplish or do it or move the needle. Unconscious energy is when it's just requiring the energy of you without you even meaning to. And that's what the hamster wheel does. It exacts a tax from you, it exacts a price from you in the form of energy, but the reward is nothing because all you do is spend energy to stay in the same place. Man, that's a fire comment right there. The next thing I want to talk with you about is the illusion of progress is the trap. I'm going to say that again. The illusion of progress is the trap. You feel productive because you're doing things like thinking, planning, and even evaluating, but nothing's being decided. Man, that's powerful. I'm going to say that again. You can feel productive because you're doing things like thinking, planning, or even evaluating, but nothing's being decided. Meaning that you can be on that hamster wheel just doing those things that you're going through the motion, you're going through the repetition, and it feels like you're accomplishing a lot, and it looks like you're accomplishing a lot. And to others, you may even look like a high performer, but really, you're doing nothing. You're accomplishing nothing. That's why I often say in leadership and business, and I say this in this podcast all the time, you have to have ways of being able to measure progress. Anything that's worth doing a business should also be measurable. Why is that? Because you need to see if it's moving the needle. If it's not moving the needle, then you're not doing anything. You're just staying on the hamster wheel. You've got to learn how to move the needle. That's why this is so important. You know, it's so important in business to know what your true north is. Now, what I mean by. By your true north, what is the vision you have for the business? What are the goals you've listed that are going to help you get there? And then everything you do, every task, every project, every initiative that you do, should be measured against the simple fact is this action, this project, this initiative, whatever it is, these tasks, are they moving the needle towards our goal of accomplishing them so we can accomplish our vision, or is this simply a good thing out of place? In other words, there are things you can do in business that seem like good things, but if they're not accomplishing your goals or helping you to accomplish your goals or move toward your vision, then they're just noise. And sometimes you have to cut those things out. That or you have to recognize how those things impact the bigger picture. And if you're constantly finding yourself against those things, Then something is out of alignment. Either your vision's off, your goals are off, or your practices are off. You know, we just did a podcast where we talked about that. The most successful people in this world, the most successful businesses that learn how to scale, they learn how to build processes around systems, not around people. These are the same types of things. You have to be able to measure whatever it is you're willing to do. You know, I have a podcast on my ministry side because a lot of, you know, I have a ministry site. I do as well. And there's a saying that I use over there, and I have a video about it, that anything that's worth praying for should also be worth waiting for. That's a fire title right there. I'm going to say it again. Anything that's worth praying for should also be worth waiting for. Well, every time I think about that, this is like two sides of a coin. If you flip a coin on one side's heads and on the other side's tails, well, on one side you have what I just said. Anything that's worth praying for should be worth waiting for. But on the other side of that coin is the business analogy. Anything worth doing should be worth measuring. Anything worth doing should be worth measuring. Why? Because that's how you know you're making progress. And if you've got something that you either don't know how to measure or you just don't want to measure, most likely that thing's not helping you move your needle. It's just keeping you busy on the hamster. Well, whoa, man. I'm dropping some bombs today, but I'm telling you, these things matter. And I believe I can sense in my spirit, I already know they're resonating with you because these things matter. They're significant. Now, like I said, the illusion of progress is the trap. You feel productive because, like I said, you're thinking, you're planning, you're evaluating, but nothing's happening because you're just staying on the hamster wheel, moving over and over again. In leadership, clarity doesn't come from overthinking. It comes from deciding and adjusting. I'm going to say that again because it's really important to understand this. In leadership, clarity doesn't come from overthinking about something. It doesn't come from overthinking, comes from deciding, making a decision, and then making adjustments. In other words, clarity comes when you make the quality choice. Do something. You decide to do something, but as you do, you measure it along the way. And as you're measuring it, you're making adjustments. Sometimes those are micro adjustments, meaning they're very small in nature. Other times they're significant adjustments. You know, if what your goal was is, let's say your business was a boat and you're out in the middle of the ocean, and let's say you set your heading, and let's say, for example, that you know you're leaving Florida and you want to make it to the Bahamas. And that may not seem like a far trip, but you still want to make it to the Bahamas. If you're off by even one degree on your heading, you're not going to end up in the Bahamas. You're going to pass, you're going to overshoot the destination you were headed, and you're going to end up in a vastly different location. Why? Because even one degree of measurement, one degree of change, can be the difference of you reaching your target or your destination or being somewhere completely off balance. If you don't believe that one degree can make a significant difference, look at the concept of boiling water. At 211 degrees, water is just hot. But at 212 degrees, water boils. That's the difference that one simple degree can make. 211, you got hot water, but 212 degrees, you've got boiling water. Micro adjustments matter. So when you're doing this thing, understand, clarity comes from deciding and then making adjustments. Don't just think, the clarity comes from deciding. You will get clarity from that, but you also have to be committed to measuring it and making the adjustments. Now, here's your next leadership truth bomb. Real progress leaves tracks. Indecision just leaves you tired. Whoo. That's a fire statement right there. Let's see if we can go into that a little bit. Real progress leaves tracks. Indecision just leaves you tired. What do I mean by that? Well, consider it like you're going down a pathway and you leave tracks in the dirt or in the mud or in the earth. Tracks. Tracks help you understand the direction you were headed. So when you want to repeat that same progress, you can go back and measure it by following the tracks you made before. And if you find somewhere in the middle of the journey you veered off course, all you got to do is back trace until you see where the tracks veered left or veered right when they were supposed to be going straight. And that's how you know, this is where I need to make my micro adjustments, or this is where I need to make my adjustments. That's just a very simple analogy. You can apply a lot of different ways. And even as I'm saying that, you may have even saw a different picture in your mind. But these things matter. The next thing I want to take you to is that fear. I'm going to say it again. Fear is usually at the core of indecision. It's fear. Fear is usually at the core, the epicenter. It's at the very core or foundation of indecision. But what kinds of fear? Well, this isn't an exhaustive list, but these are some kinds. The types of fears that are usually at the core of indecision might pop up, as in the fear of choosing wrong. What happens if you make the wrong decision? You know, the only thing worse than making a wrong decision is never making a decision at all and staying stuck in the same place. What if you'd made the right decision? Or what if you do make it wrong? That's why you decide. You get clarity by deciding, and then you measure it. And as you're measuring, if you see you're off course right away, that's what the benefit of purpose of measuring is, so you can hurry up and make your adjustments. You don't just go all the way until you bump into the island. If you're that boat and you make the 1 degree change and you just go and go and go. If you're leaving Florida and you're going to the Bahamas, and I guess it depends what kind of boat you're in, but let's say that that boat trip is supposed to take you, like, six to eight hours, and maybe it's longer than that, maybe it's shorter, but let's say six to eight hours. Well, if you're hitting hours 72 and you haven't hit there yet, you probably should be looking at making some adjustments rather than just keep going until you run out of gas or fuel or just keep going until you bump into some other place. You have to make adjustments. You have to be able to measure this thing so you can make adjustments. Another kind of fear is the fear of what will people think, man? The fear of the judgment of others. That's something that's huge. That, unfortunately, is debilitating for many people and anchors them in place. Another type of fear is the fear of what the decision will require of you. Whoo. That's a strong one right there. Especially for people who already have a lot on their plate. You know, if you already have a lot on your plate and you're feeling overwhelmed, it could be that you don't need more work to do. It could be that you just need better processes in place, built around systems and not around people. Or another direct way of saying it is you need to start building processes around systems instead of building processes around you. In other words, you are the people in that equation. That's a fire thing right there. And if you do that, all of a sudden you free up time or you become much more productive. But the fear of what the decision will require of you, oftentimes people are so concerned about the what if. What if it requires me to work an extra 20 hours, or what if I have to work this or do this or do that. And because of the unknown of the what if, they never plunge into the decision. That's why we decide after we decide. The clarity comes with the decision. We then measure frequently and we make micro adjustments as we need to or adjustments as we need to. Now here's another leadership truth bomb for you today. Indecision is just fear dressed up like wisdom. Oh, man, that's good right there. Indecision is just fear dressed up like wisdom, man. Sometimes people think that they're being so wise by waiting or delaying on making the decision. Now, I'm a firm believer in going before the Lord and praying and making sure you have a sure word from God. But I know people who will sit and pray and then wait forever and never step out and do anything. And I know others who are like, well, I'm going to pray, but just real quick, haphazardly, because I'm just going to turn around and just do it. And if I mess it up bad, I'm just going to expect for God to come and find me. And I'm not saying either of those are good. But here's what I will tell you. What I tell all my people is, did you pray about it and do you have a peace about it? If you pray and you don't have a peace, that's not the direction you're supposed to be going. If all you have is turmoil and confusion inside of you, that's God's way of telling you that's not the direction he has for you. But sometimes it just takes the little tweak of saying, lord, show me what I don't know about the situation that I need to know. Lord, before I make this decision and commit to this thing, please show me what I need to know that I don't already know. Please show me what I don't know about this decision that I need to know before committing to it. And as you do that and you get quiet. And I mean, you got to do work sometimes it's putting in work just to get quiet before him so you can hear for just a little bit. And as you do that and you get that clarity, you make your decision and you step out and do that thing. But as you do, you then measure it frequently and you make adjustments as needed. That's powerful right there. The next thing I have for you is. And then we're going to get ready to close. But the next thing I have for you is progress requires decision. I'm going to say that again. Progress requires decision. In fact, I think I could even say that stronger to say, progress will always require decision of some kind. Progress will always require decision of some kind. You can't lead without making decisions, even if they're just small ones, man. I'm going to say that again. You cannot lead without making the decisions, even just small ones. There is always some type of decision to make, and not all the decisions are always big. A lot of times it's just a lot of little decisions that add up to something big later on. Because, like, it's just like the little. Taking the measurements and making the micro adjustments. A lot of micro adjustments may not seem real big, but over time, micro adjustments can make a very big difference. You know, I gave you the example earlier, being on the boat and being off by one degree and missing your target wildly. I also gave you the difference of how one degree matters when it comes between the difference between hot water and the boiling point of water. Start small, act quickly, and adjust often. That's your mantra right there. If you want a mantra for your true north and how to point north, I'm giving you something right now that you can put. This is something you could paint on your wall of your conference room and use it as your guiding post. Your trim true north for you and your team for every meeting you go into, start small, act quickly, and adjust often. Man, that's powerful right there. That is huge. I might just make a podcast just on that. That is so significant. The next thing I have for you, and this is my final truth bomb for you today, or my leadership truth bomb for today. And then I'm going to give you some closing thoughts. Is that clarity lives on the other side of commitment. Whoo. That's good right there. Clarity lives on the other side of commitment. And then my closing thoughts for you today are, if you feel stuck, check your feet. If you feel stuck, check your feet. You might not be on the wrong path. You just Might be standing still. Whoo. That's good right there. You need to learn how to step off of the hamster wheel. And how do you do that? You decide, you move and you lead. I'm going to say that again. If you feel stuck, check your feet. You might not be on the wrong path. Sometimes people think they're on the wrong path because they don't see any movement. But you might not be on the wrong path. You might just. Your feet might just be standing still. Step off that hamster wheel. And the way you do it, the way you step off the hamster wheel of indecision, you decide you move and you lead. And if you can do those three things, I believe you're getting ready to connect with and encounter some of your best success you've ever had. No matter what area of your life you apply this to, I believe you're getting ready to have some of the most success you've ever had. Guys, before I let you go today, I want to do a couple things.
