Speaker:

Hello, good people. Welcome to daily bible

Speaker:

refresh with doctor Brad Miller. This is the daily

Speaker:

bible study that we take from the

Speaker:

revised common lectionary. We're in year c,

Speaker:

the epiphany season. We offer you a bible study, a daily bible

Speaker:

study every single day that is understandable, relatable,

Speaker:

and applicable. We make it

Speaker:

understandable by the fact that we read the New Testament

Speaker:

lesson only, and we read it from the message translation of the

Speaker:

bible. Relatable in as much as we offer a couple

Speaker:

of points to ponder about the scripture

Speaker:

and applicable as we give you an action step to take. We have a

Speaker:

prayer, and we do so in under 10 minutes.

Speaker:

Our reading for the day is from Romans

12 00:01:01

9 through 21.

12 00:01:06

Reading for the message. Love from the center of

12 00:01:09

who you are. Don't fake it. Run for dear

12 00:01:13

life from evil. Hold on for dear

12 00:01:17

life to good.

12 00:01:22

Be good friends who love deeply.

12 00:01:25

Practice playing 2nd fiddle. Don't

12 00:01:29

burn out. Keep yourselves fueled and

12 00:01:32

aflame. Be alert servants of the master,

12 00:01:37

cheerfully expectant. Don't quit in hard

12 00:01:40

times, pray all the harder. Help needy

12 00:01:44

Christians. Be inventive in hospitality.

12 00:01:49

Bless your enemies. No cursing under your breath.

12 00:01:54

Laugh with your happy friends when they're happy. Share tears

12 00:01:58

when they're down. Get along with each other. Don't be stuck up.

12 00:02:02

Make friends with nobodies. Don't be the

12 00:02:05

great somebody. Don't hit back.

12 00:02:09

Discover beauty in everyone. If you've got it

12 00:02:13

in you, get along with everybody. Don't insist

12 00:02:17

on getting even. That's not for you to do. I'll do the judging,

12 00:02:21

says God. I'll take care of it. Our scriptures tell us

12 00:02:25

that if you see your enemy hungry, go buy that person

12 00:02:28

lunch. Or if he's thirsty, get him a drink.

12 00:02:32

Your generosity will surprise him with goodness. Don't let

12 00:02:36

evil get the best of you. Get the best of evil

12 00:02:41

by doing good. What?

12 00:02:44

What a fantastic passage of scripture about how to live your

12 00:02:48

life with revolution with with radical love, which is

12 00:02:52

revolutionary, practicing the revolutionary

12 00:02:55

practice of radical love, which is transformative

12 00:02:59

love in the community setting, and it's about community care, caring for

12 00:03:03

one another. Here's a few points to ponder. One

12 00:03:07

has to do with authentic solidarity. It says,

12 00:03:11

love from the center of who you are, don't fake it.

12 00:03:15

And this really speaks to important of being a

12 00:03:19

genuine ally and being in solidarity

12 00:03:23

with others. Progressive Christianity recognizes

12 00:03:26

that performative activism and superficial

12 00:03:30

inclusion aren't enough. Real transformation

12 00:03:33

requires authentic engagement

12 00:03:37

with works where we are seeking justice,

12 00:03:41

even when it's uncomfortable or costly.

12 00:03:46

Another point is sustainable activism.

12 00:03:51

There's a warn warning here about burnout

12 00:03:54

and also a word of encouragement to it

12 00:03:58

says here to keep yourself fueled and aflame.

12 00:04:02

Did you get that? And that's just crucial for all of us,

12 00:04:06

especially if we're seeking justice. It can be taxing on

12 00:04:09

us. And this isn't just about self care, but it's also about

12 00:04:13

community care, caring for one another. And that way we

12 00:04:17

can have mutual sustainability that can

12 00:04:20

endure long term struggles while

12 00:04:24

supporting one another, especially

12 00:04:28

those who are marginalized. One more point

12 00:04:32

to ponder, and that has to do with subversive hospitality.

12 00:04:36

It says here, make friends with nobodies. Don't be the great somebody. I love

12 00:04:40

that turn of a phrase. It really challenges hierarchies

12 00:04:44

and privilege, doesn't it? And so the radical hospitality

12 00:04:48

is not just about being nice, it's about being

12 00:04:51

deliberately disruptive as systems of status quo of power, which

12 00:04:55

are destructive. So it's about practicing

12 00:04:58

friendship across social barriers. And when we challenge

12 00:05:02

structures that create those barriers, that is what we're called to

12 00:05:06

do. Here's your action step for the day.

12 00:05:10

It has to do with creating a community care map. That

12 00:05:14

is draw out or kind of make a graph or a chart

12 00:05:19

about the community care connections in

12 00:05:22

your life, in your community, or things that you care about.

12 00:05:27

And note where there is maybe points of

12 00:05:31

privilege or power that exist, maybe you're even a part of

12 00:05:34

it, and exemplify 3 ways

12 00:05:38

that you can practice what we might call

12 00:05:41

subversive hospitality. That is by sharing, by

12 00:05:45

being extravagant givers, sharing

12 00:05:49

resources, making space and room for others,

12 00:05:53

or maybe amplifying marginalized voices

12 00:05:56

and implement something, do something, take an action.

12 00:06:00

And you might want to focus on things that are sustainable, not just

12 00:06:04

kind of one hit wonders, but things that can have a lasting long term

12 00:06:07

change rather than just kind of a one term flash in the

12 00:06:11

pan type of thing. We're gonna pray in just a moment,

12 00:06:15

but I did want you to know about our resource that we offer to you

12 00:06:18

called the ABC 123

12 00:06:22

bible study guide. It's just really a gift that we give you. You'll find it

12 00:06:25

there at voice of god daily dot com, our website. That's where we

12 00:06:29

12 00:06:33

12 00:06:37

we can find what you need there. And you have a

12 00:06:40

simple Bible study method. It is really as easy as a,

12 00:06:44

b, c, 1, 2, 3. Let's pray.

12 00:06:50

Oh God, oh God of a revolutionary love,

12 00:06:54

help us to move beyond performative care to authentic

12 00:06:59

solidarity with those who struggle. Teach us the rhythm of

12 00:07:02

sustainable activism where rest

12 00:07:06

is as sacred as action and community care powers our work

12 00:07:10

for justice. Give us courage to cross the boundaries that separate us

12 00:07:14

from our neighbors, wisdom to recognize our own privilege,

12 00:07:18

and help us to be a part of dismantling oppressive systems.

12 00:07:23

May our hospitality be truly subversive and

12 00:07:26

our love genuinely transformative

12 00:07:31

and our commitment to justice unwavering.

12 00:07:35

Ground us in a hope when work seems endless,

12 00:07:39

and help us get connected in community when we feel alone.

12 00:07:43
