Speaker BHere's today's reading reading from Mark 10:17 22 from the Message to Enter God's Kingdom as he went out into the street, a man came running up, greeted him with great reverence and asked, good teacher, what must I do to get eternal life?
Speaker BJesus said, why are you calling me good?
Speaker BNo one is good, only God.
Speaker BYou know the commandments, don't murder, don't commit adultery, don't steal, don't lie, don't cheat, honor your father and mother.
Speaker BAnd he said, teacher, I have from my youth kept them all.
Speaker BJesus looked him hard in the eye and loved him.
Speaker BAnd he said, there's one thing left.
Speaker BGo sell whatever you own and give it to the poor.
Speaker BAll your wealth will then be heavenly wealth and come and follow me.
Speaker BThe man's face clouded over.
Speaker BThis was the last thing he expected to hear, and he walked up with a heavy heart.
Speaker BHe was holding on tight to a lot of things and not about to let go.
Speaker BThe courage to let go is the theme of this passage of Scripture.
Speaker BAnd we have this really fascinating encounter between Jesus and this woman wealthy man, this wealthy seeker who and it really challenges all of our understanding of the relationship of wealth and worth and what it truly means to follow a spiritual path.
Speaker BLet's look at some points to ponder.
Speaker BThe first is about going beyond traditional success metrics.
Speaker BThis passage beautifully illustrates how conventional markers of success wealth rule, following social status can sometimes become barriers to deeper spiritual growth.
Speaker BThe wealthy man had done everything right by society standards, yet Jesus saw something missing in our modern context.
Speaker BThis invites us to examine how our own attachments to success, security or status might be limiting our capacity for transformative love and justice.
Speaker BAnother point to ponder is about love preceding challenge.
Speaker BNotice that before Jesus challenges the man, the text specifically mentions that Jesus looked at him and loved him, a crucial detail.
Speaker BA radical challenge comes from a place of love, not judgment.
Speaker BAs progressive Christians, this reminds us that working for social change and economic justice should always be grounded in deep compassion, even when challenging privileged positions or systematic inequalities.
Speaker BAnother point to ponder is the revolutionary nature of Enough Jesus invitation to sell what you own and give it to the poor isn't about inducing guilt or promoting asceticism.
Speaker BRather, it's a radical vision of a community where everyone has enough.
Speaker BThis speaks directly to our contemporary struggles with wealth inequality over consumption and the environmental crisis.
Speaker BWhat might it look like to create systems and societies built on sufficiency rather than excess?
Speaker BHere is an action step that you can take.
Speaker BChoose an area where excess is in your life.
Speaker BIt might be material possessions, it might be your time spent on social media, or might be emotional attachments and certain outcomes.
Speaker BIt may be money or some other tangible sign of wealth and practice intentional letting go of some of that excess and redirect those resources, money, time, energy, volunteerism towards something that serves a common good.
Speaker BAnd then kind of pay attention to the emotions and insights that rise up in you in this process.
Speaker BWe're gonna have a closing prayer here in just a minute.
Speaker BDid want you to know that we have a resource just for you.
Speaker BIt's called the ABC1, 23 Bible Study Method.

Speaker BLet's pray.
Speaker BOh God, you are a loving source of wisdom.
Speaker BWe recognize how deeply we cling to our security blankets whether they're made of money or status or certainty.
Speaker BHelp us see where attachments might be holding us back from a fuller participation in your work of love and justice.
Speaker BGrant us the courage to let go, the wisdom to know what truly matters, and the trust to follow where love leads.
Speaker BMay our letting go create space for others to have enough in hope and openness.
Speaker BWe pray.
Speaker BAmen.
