Here is your host, Randy Black.

Speaker 2 00:00:58

Today we begin our study of the 37 documented miracles of Jesus.

Speaker 2 00:01:04

Our first comes from John chapter 2, verses 1 through 11.

Speaker 2 00:01:08

The turning of water into wine at the wedding in Cana.

Speaker 2 00:01:13

This miracle is not only a demonstration of Jesus' divine power, but also holds important lessons for us.

Speaker 2 00:01:22

Let's open up with prayer.

Speaker 2 00:01:24

Dear Heavenly Father, thank you for the opportunity to join together and learn from your word.

Speaker 2 00:01:30

Please open our hearts and minds as we study the miracle of Jesus turning water into wine.

Speaker 2 00:01:35

so that we can understand its significance for the time and our own lives today.

Speaker 3 00:01:45

John chapter 2, verses 1 through 11.

Speaker 3 00:01:48

And the third day there was a marriage in Cana of Galilee, and the mother of Jesus was there.

Speaker 3 00:01:54

And both Jesus was called, and his disciples to the marriage.

Speaker 3 00:01:58

And when they wanted wine, the mother of Jesus saith unto him, They have no wine.

Speaker 3 00:02:04

Jesus saith unto her, Woman, what have I to do with thee?

Speaker 3 00:02:08

Mine hour is not yet come.

Speaker 3 00:02:10

His mother saith unto the servants, Whatsoever he saith unto you, do it.

Speaker 3 00:02:16

And there were set there six waterpots of stone, after the manner of the purifying of the Jews, containing two or three firkins apiece

Speaker 3 00:02:26

Jesus saith unto them, Fill the waterpots with water.

Speaker 3 00:02:29

And they filled them up to the brim.

Speaker 3 00:02:32

And he saith unto them, Draw out now and bear unto the governor of the feast.

Speaker 3 00:02:36

And they bear it

Speaker 3 00:02:37

When the ruler of the feast had tasted the water that was made wine, and knew not whence it was, but the servants which drew the water knew

Speaker 3 00:02:46

The governor of the feast called the bridegroom, and saith unto him, Every man at the beginning doth set forth good wine.

Speaker 3 00:02:55

And when men have well drunk, then that which is worse, but thou hast kept the good wine until now

Speaker 3 00:03:03

This beginning of miracles did Jesus in Cana of Galilee, and manifested forth his glory, and his disciples believed on him.

Speaker 2 00:03:14

Imagine a vibrant feast and celebration of a wedding in the town of Cana.

Speaker 2 00:03:20

In Jesus' time, weddings were major social events.

Speaker 2 00:03:25

They often lasted for several days.

Speaker 2 00:03:28

Running out of wine at such a celebration like this would have been considered a major, huge, serious social faux pas.

Speaker 2 00:03:38

It would bring embarrassment to the hosts, and it would dampen the joy of the occasion.

Speaker 2 00:03:43

It's in this context that Jesus performs his first public documented miracle.

Speaker 2 00:03:51

When Mary, Jesus' mother, informs him of the wine shortage, Jesus initially responds in verse 4 with what seems like hesitation

Speaker 2 00:04:01

He says, Woman, what have I to do with thee?

Speaker 2 00:04:05

Mine hour is not yet come.

Speaker 2 00:04:08

Despite this

Speaker 2 00:04:10

Mary instructs the servants to follow any directions Jesus gives them.

Speaker 2 00:04:15

She demonstrated her faith in his ability to help

Speaker 2 00:04:19

Jesus then moved by compassion and a desire to preserve the joy of the celebration decides to intervene

Speaker 2 00:04:27

This shows us that Jesus cares deeply about our needs, even those that seem minor or trivial.

Speaker 2 00:04:38

Jesus instructs the servants to fill six very large stone jars with water.

Speaker 2 00:04:44

These jars are typically used in the ceremonial washing by the Jews, and they hold a significant amount of liquid.

Speaker 2 00:04:52

And after filling them to the brim, Jesus tells the servants to draw some out and take it to the governor of the feast.

Speaker 2 00:05:01

To everyone's amazement, the water has now been transformed into high-quality wine.

Speaker 2 00:05:09

The governor of the feast, unaware of the source of this wine, praises the bridegroom for saving the best wine for last.

Speaker 2 00:05:20

This miracle is not just about providing wine for a party.

Speaker 2 00:05:25

It's Jesus' first public sign, revealing his glory and leading his disciples to believe in him.

Speaker 2 00:05:33

It symbolizes the transformative power of Jesus' presence, and it foreshadows the abundant life he offers freely.

Speaker 2 00:05:44

Just as the water was transformed into its finest wine, Jesus transforms our ordinary lives into something extraordinary whenever we invite him in.

Speaker 2 00:05:58

There are three significant lessons for today that we can take from this miracle and from this scripture.

Speaker 2 00:06:05

The first deals with our faith.

Speaker 2 00:06:07

The story encourages us to have faith in Jesus' ability to intervene in our lives no matter the situation, just as Mary trusted Jesus.

Speaker 2 00:06:18

we too should place our trust in him.

Speaker 2 00:06:22

The second deals with our obedience.

Speaker 2 00:06:25

The servants at the wedding demonstrated obedience by following Jesus' instructions without question

Speaker 2 00:06:31

Their actions remind us of the importance of obeying Jesus, even when we don't fully understand his plans.

Speaker 2 00:06:40

And the third deals with abundance.

Speaker 2 00:06:43

Jesus didn't just provide wine.

Speaker 2 00:06:46

He provided the best wine in abundance.

Speaker 2 00:06:50

This speaks to the nature of his blessings.

Speaker 2 00:06:53

He gives generously and beyond what we expect.

Speaker 2 00:06:59

As you go about your day, think about areas in your life where you need Jesus' intervention.

Speaker 2 00:07:07

Are there situations that seem impossible or somewhat overwhelming?

Speaker 2 00:07:13

Remember that Jesus is capable of transforming any circumstance in front of you.

Speaker 2 00:07:21

Place your faith in him.

Speaker 2 00:07:23

Be obedient to his guidance, and trust that he will bring abundance and joy into your life.

Speaker 2 00:07:32

Just as Jesus turned the water into wine, he can transform our lives in miraculous ways when we invite him in.

Speaker 2 00:07:41

May we go forth throughout our day and throughout our life with faith and obedience, trusting in His power to bring abundance and joy into our lives.

Speaker 2 00:07:54

Let us now close out our lesson with a prayer.

Speaker 2 00:07:58

Heavenly Father, thank you for the lessons we've learned today from the miracle at the wedding in Cana.

Speaker 2 00:08:05

Help us to trust in your power, to obey your commands, and to experience the abundance of life that comes from following you.

Speaker 2 00:08:15

In Jesus' name we pray.

Speaker 2 00:08:17

Amen.
