Church plants on Crete needs sturdy leadership.
Speaker:Paul gives Titus a blueprint for good works that adorn the gospel sound
Speaker:teaching that transforms daily life.
Speaker:This is Seek Go Create.

Speaker:order in context, while walking through the entire New Testament, the
Speaker:way it was written, so you can hear it the way the first churches did.
Speaker:Make sure if you haven't done it already, I keep encouraging you
Speaker:to go to K two M Foundation slash.

Speaker:Stop.
Speaker:Titus short letter with a big assignment.
Speaker:I like to say it packs quite the punch here.
Speaker:Some key facts.
Speaker:The author is Paul.
Speaker:The date is AD 65, the year 65 in the first century.
Speaker:The audience, while it's specifically written to Titus,
Speaker:who has been establishing churches on the island of Crete.
Speaker:But similar to one Timothy, this letter is meant to be heard by the churches.
Speaker:So Paul is giving Titus public authority sort of writing to the
Speaker:church through Titus the setting 35 years post or after the resurrection.
Speaker:Paul seems to be moving quickly in some of the things he's writing now.
Speaker:James and Peter, we know.
Speaker:Have already been martyred, and I'm sure that that word has traveled throughout the
Speaker:empire, so these people are aware of it.
Speaker:There's a sense of urgency.
Speaker:Let's look at who Titus is.
Speaker:Titus is Paul's troubleshooter is the word we like to use.
Speaker:My true child in a common faith.
Speaker:He's a Greek convert.
Speaker:He was never.
Speaker:Circumcised.
Speaker:Paul and Titus have known each other for at least 16 years.
Speaker:We know they were together at the Jerusalem Council in 80 49, which was 16
Speaker:years prior to this letter being written.
Speaker:Paul refused to circumcised him.
Speaker:Even under pressure, Titus became a test case for Gentile Freedom in Christ.
Speaker:When the Corinthian church was fracturing, Paul sent Titus twice.
Speaker:He was the first to deliver a painful letter.
Speaker:Then to organize the collection for Jerusalem, Paul trusted him
Speaker:with the hardest assignments.
Speaker:Now, Titus has Crete young churches, no structure, a culture
Speaker:that's notorious for dishonesty and false teachers are moving in.
Speaker:This is exactly the kind of mess that Tus seems to know how to handle.
Speaker:The historical context, in Rome, Nero's on the throne, and let's just
Speaker:say he's persecuting Christians.
Speaker:Okay?
Speaker:We've discussed that in previous, in previous episodes.
Speaker:We know that Nero is wreaking havoc in Jerusalem.
Speaker:The temple is still intact.
Speaker:Tensions are at a breaking point.
Speaker:However, we're only five years that we now know.
Speaker:Before the destruction occurs, the church, the leadership crisis is undeniable.
Speaker:James has been killed.
Speaker:Peter has been martyred Paul senses and knows that he's next.
Speaker:He's establishing leaders everywhere, and these last few letters of Paul seem to be.
Speaker:Getting leadership lessons in writing.
Speaker:Let's talk about the island of Crete.
Speaker:It's a large island on the Mediterranean trade routes.
Speaker:Jews from Crete, were at Pentecost.
Speaker:We know that from Acts two 11.
Speaker:The gospel may have arrived early.
Speaker:In other words, people may have left Pentecost and taken the
Speaker:gospel back to the island of Crete.
Speaker:We don't know that exactly, but we can speculate.
Speaker:But the culture there is notorious.
Speaker:Paul quotes a Cretin poet.
Speaker:And this is his quote from chapter one verse 12.
Speaker:Cretins are always liars, evil beasts, lazy gluttons.
Speaker:That is strong words, but Paul's not insulting.
Speaker:He's acknowledging the challenge.
Speaker:Why?
Speaker:Paul gives Titus a blueprint.
Speaker:Appoint elders teach sound doctrine.
Speaker:Build communities that can stand, own their own.
Speaker:What you'll encounter in Titus.
Speaker:It's practical and beautiful, good works that adorn the gospel.
Speaker:You'll hear about appointing elders in every town above reproach,
Speaker:able to teach self-controlled.
Speaker:You'll hear a rebuke of false teachers who upset.
Speaker:Whole families teaching for shameful gain.
Speaker:Teach what?
Speaker:Accords with sound doctrine.
Speaker:Older men, older women, younger women, younger men, bond servants.
Speaker:We we'll hear about all of those groups.
Speaker:Adorn.
Speaker:The doctrine, interesting term, so that in everything they make, the teaching
Speaker:about God our savior attractive, the grace of God has appeared bringing salvation.
Speaker:Training us to renounce ungodliness and waiting for the
Speaker:Blessed hope saved by Mercy.
Speaker:Zealous for good works, not by works of righteousness we
Speaker:have done, but by his mercy.
Speaker:I love this term, the blessed hope waiting.
Speaker:For the appearing of the glory of our great God and Savior Jesus Christ.
Speaker:In chapter two, verse 13, this isn't a distant expectation.
Speaker:Remember this was written in 65.
Speaker:The end of the age is.
Speaker:Close.
Speaker:The coming is soon.
Speaker:Good works flow from the resurrection power.
Speaker:The spirit poured out through Jesus.
Speaker:Regenerating and renewing Chapter three verse five and six, one loaded sentence
Speaker:captures everything Grace appeared.
Speaker:Grace trains grace.
Speaker:Weights.
Speaker:You're gonna read Titus Nice short book.
Speaker:Some of you're gonna be excited in one sitting.
Speaker:And again, don't read this one lightly.
Speaker:Paul puts a bunch of stuff in this letter to Titus in our next episode.
Speaker:Woo.
Speaker:I'm so excited.
Speaker:We will get to John the last gospel.
Speaker:It's gonna answer some.
Speaker:Deep theological questions.
Speaker:Basically, who is Jesus believe and have life in His name?
Speaker:Make sure you're continuing to follow along with what we're doing
Speaker:at K two M Foundation slash NT 90.
Speaker:Now let's set the stage for reading this letter from Paul to Titus.
Speaker:The fishing village smells of salt and olive oil.
Speaker:You're sitting in a house near the harbor, one of a dozen believers gathered
Speaker:after sunset, the day's work is done.
Speaker:Oil lamps flicker against whitewashed walls.
Speaker:Someone enters with a letter from Paul for Titus Titus Breaks the seal.
Speaker:He reads aloud, appoint elders in every town.
Speaker:As I directed you, the room shifts.
Speaker:This is an advice.
Speaker:It's a blueprint.
Speaker:You think of the other islands, the other towns.
Speaker:Paul is doing this everywhere, establishing leaders before
Speaker:it's too late, James is dead.
Speaker:Peter is dead.
Speaker:Paul knows he's next.
Speaker:For the grace of God has appeared bringing salvation for all people.
Speaker:Outside the Mediterranean stretches dark toward Rome,
Speaker:toward fire, toward martyrdom.
Speaker:But here in this room, grace is training a people to wait for the blessed hope,
Speaker:and that hope seems so close now.
Speaker:Now let's read
