Speaker:

- [Manolo] ¡Salud!

- [Drew] ¡Salud!

Speaker:

(salsa music plays)

(continued greetings)

Speaker:

(salsa continues)

(indistinct chatter)

Speaker:

(laughter)

Speaker:

- [Drew] Sit in that chair.

Speaker:

- Oh, I get one?

Speaker:

This is the best part of the job.

Speaker:

- [Manolo] I know.

Speaker:

- [Drew] (inhales) So, okay.

Speaker:

First start with the award.

You won an award recently.

Speaker:

- [Manolo] A couple.

- [Drew] Talk about it.

Speaker:

- [Manolo] Sure.

- What, what'd you win?

Speaker:

- [Manolo] The Cigar Trophy Award.

Speaker:

And this one actually

wins 21 for the Top 25

Speaker:

in Cigar Journal.

Speaker:

- [Drew] Beautiful.

- [Manolo] Last year.

Speaker:

- [Drew] So one of them was for

Speaker:

cigars that are produced outside of

Speaker:

the Dominican and Nicaragua, correct?

Speaker:

- [Manolo] Yeah. This

one is D.R. and Mexico.

Speaker:

The other winner it's all Mexican puro

Speaker:

and we produce in Nicaragua and Mexico.

Speaker:

- [Drew] This is so fun.

Speaker:

Do you love your job?

Speaker:

- I love my job.

(interviewer laughs)

Speaker:

- [Drew] You get to serve friends tequila

Speaker:

and delicious cigars.

Speaker:

- [Manolo] I know.

Speaker:

- [Drew] That's so good.

Speaker:

Now tell me what I'm smoking.

Speaker:

- [Manolo] You're smoking La Coronela.

Speaker:

La Coronela is made with an

amazing Habano Ecuador wrapper.

Speaker:

- [Drew] This is, is so beautiful.

Speaker:

- [Manolo] The binder,

it's Brazilian Arapiraca.

Speaker:

And the filler, it's Mexico

Speaker:

with Dominican Republic tobaccos.

Speaker:

- [Drew] Outstanding.

- [Manolo] And the format,

Speaker:

it's 58x5.5.

Speaker:

- [Drew] I first met your team-

Speaker:

- [Manolo] Yeah.

- [Drew] Two years ago?

Speaker:

Was two years the launch, or three?

Speaker:

- [Manolo] The launch it was in 2021.

Speaker:

- [Drew] Ok, so three.

- [Manolo] Our first PCA

Speaker:

with just one cigar.

Speaker:

- [Drew] So this is the beginning of

Speaker:

your fourth year?

Speaker:

- [Manolo] Yeah.

- [Drew] How's it been?

Speaker:

- [Manolo] So far, so well.

Speaker:

- [Drew] Oh, this is lovely.

Speaker:

- [Manolo] (interviewer laughs) Thank you.

Speaker:

- [Drew] Hmm. How do

you describe the cigar?

Speaker:

- [Manolo] Well, from, in my opinion,

Speaker:

it's complex,

(interviewer hums)

Speaker:

but elegant with the Dominican tobaccos

Speaker:

and deep flavors and deep

aromas from the Negro San Andrés

Speaker:

inside in the filler.

Speaker:

So you can get sweetness,

Speaker:

stable hints of hay,

Speaker:

dark cacao in the last part of the mouth.

Speaker:

So it's very interesting

cigar. It's very transitional.

Speaker:

- Oh, it is interesting.

- And It's a lot of flavors.

Speaker:

- Yeah. It's very rich.

- It's the aroma.

Speaker:

It's beautiful.

- [Drew] Mh hmm

Speaker:

- [Manolo] Actually for this cigar.

Speaker:

I prefer the aroma for the, for the taste.

Speaker:

But it's beautiful.

Speaker:

- [Drew] Well, and it's,

there's a subtle floral-

Speaker:

Right? Is that right? Yeah.

It's really beautiful.

Speaker:

So how's the process of starting

Speaker:

a new cigar company?

Speaker:

- [Manolo] Wow. It's hard. It's hard.

Speaker:

For us, we work at, compared to one year

Speaker:

in the table between Jamie

[Baer], Serge [Bolling] and I

Speaker:

to talk about, about the cigars,

Speaker:

about the name, about

the colors, about the,

Speaker:

the proper logo type and the inspiration.

Speaker:

Because all the time I

talk about the, we need

Speaker:

to share Mexico, because

Mexico has an amazing tobacco,

Speaker:

not just for wrappers.

Speaker:

I know we have an amazing wrapper,

Speaker:

fabulous wrappers for Negro San Andrés,

Speaker:

but we produce an amazing

tobacco for the fillers.

Speaker:

So we need to share that.

Speaker:

And I'm from Jalisco-the

land of tequila and Mariachi,

Speaker:

so I need to share the both.

Speaker:

So we don't produce tequila,

Speaker:

but I looking the best

companion for our cigars.

Speaker:

And well, sometimes I make,

Speaker:

in the beginning the cigar and

Speaker:

after we find the name and the other

Speaker:

and other things and the storytelling.

Speaker:

But another time I

inspired the one element.

Speaker:

And for, from that I develop

Speaker:

and I design the cigar and

the blend to tell a story.

Speaker:

So we, we share Mexico between the,

Speaker:

the names, between the storytelling,

Speaker:

between the flavors and the aromas.

Speaker:

- [Drew] And it's the home of,

Speaker:

from the same home as

Mariachi and tequila.

Speaker:

Sharing Mexico. That's

really a wonderful theme

Speaker:

behind your, your craft.

Speaker:

And it is delicious.

Speaker:

- [Manolo] Great. (laughs)

- It is delicious.

Speaker:

What's in this box?

Speaker:

You brought so many wonderful

Speaker:

things for show and tell today.

Speaker:

- [Manolo] Yes. Well right

now we have three lines

Speaker:

of the, our premium shelf.

Speaker:

It's Revolutionary Edition, Mexican puros,

Speaker:

Calvary Edition blends

Nicaragua and Mexico.

Speaker:

And Soldadera Edition

blends Dominican Republican

Speaker:

and Mexico. It's our premium line.

Speaker:

We, I use special tobaccos

Speaker:

with a few years in age before be rolled.

Speaker:

For example, the Negro

San Andrés has five years

Speaker:

age before be rolled.

Speaker:

The Arapiraca has six

years before we rolled.

Speaker:

And after the rolling

process, I put in resting

Speaker:

for six to eight months each cigar.

Speaker:

So it's very, how do you say,

Speaker:

the very specific work in, in that cigars.

Speaker:

And right now in this

show we present Mexigars.

Speaker:

We made a special blend

between Mexico and cigars.

Speaker:

And I made Mexigars.

Speaker:

And my inspiration for

that cigar is a proper

Speaker:

traditional cuisine in Mexico.

Speaker:

You know, when you come

to a home for Mexicans,

Speaker:

you can feel the aromas for the kitchen.

Speaker:

So my inspiration is the proper

flavors for the Mexican food

Speaker:

from the chili, chocolate, spices, nuts,

Speaker:

and a lot of different elements.

Speaker:

But you need to recognize that element.

Speaker:

So it's made with just

all the Mexican tobaccos,

Speaker:

but different, I play

with different seeds.

Speaker:

For example, Habano grown in Mexico,

Speaker:

Negros San Andrés of course, and Sumatra

Speaker:

and another kind of tobaccos.

Speaker:

And I made that cigars very affordable,

Speaker:

very, it's like our entrance line.

Speaker:

- [Drew] Okay.

- [Manolo] Yeah.

Speaker:

It's more cheap than the premium line.

Speaker:

But it's very great flavor.

Speaker:

A lot of aromas, a lot of sensations.

Speaker:

So it's very interesting.

Speaker:

- [Drew] So how, is it

going well as far as

Speaker:

getting people to try the cigars?

Speaker:

Because my expectation

is it's very similar

Speaker:

to Boveda's challenge.

Speaker:

Once we get Boveda into a person's hands

Speaker:

and they experience it, they get it.

Speaker:

Same thing with these cigars.

Speaker:

I, I am less than three quarters

of an inch into this cigar.

Speaker:

And it is lovely. I mean it's

really a beautiful stick.

Speaker:

- [Manolo] Thank you.

- [Drew] Tastes great.

Speaker:

So how do you get people to try it?

Speaker:

Have you been doing a lot of events?

Speaker:

Have you been showing

up at a lot of stores

Speaker:

and spending time with people and,

Speaker:

and getting them to

actually smoke the cigar?

Speaker:

- [Manolo] Actually, yes.

Speaker:

I, I love to share Mexico

Speaker:

with all the cigar aficionados,

all the professionals,

Speaker:

with everybody.

Speaker:

Because we need to try to take

Speaker:

three principled columns

in the Casa 1910 brand.

Speaker:

The, the first is Mexico inspiration.

Speaker:

Mexican Revolution. For example,

Speaker:

Soldadera, actually La Coronela,

Speaker:

she was the first female colonel,

Speaker:

legally in Mexico after the revolution.

Speaker:

But she fights in the,

in the Zapata's army.

Speaker:

So every cigar from us,

it's a small tribute

Speaker:

for different elements.

Speaker:

And the other line, it's Cavalry Edition,

Speaker:

it's a tribute for horses from

Speaker:

Pancho Villa and Emiliano Zapata

Speaker:

and Revolutionary Edition,

it's a tribute for each

Speaker:

important battle in

the Mexican Revolution.

Speaker:

So when I talk this

story, the story involves

Speaker:

around the, the people

to, close the people to

Speaker:

to the brand.

Speaker:

And the another column

is good looking cigars,

Speaker:

good looking packaging.

Speaker:

And of course the best way

Speaker:

to keep the packaging

ready is with Boveda.

Speaker:

So we put an amazing box, amazing colors

Speaker:

our box every time, keeps

the proper humidity.

Speaker:

- [Drew] Hold that up for the camera.

Speaker:

- Yeah.

- Show 'em the top.

Speaker:

Close the lid and show 'em the, the top

Speaker:

so they know what they're looking for.

Speaker:

It really is a beautifully

merchandised package.

Speaker:

- [Manolo] Yes.

Speaker:

And another important column from us

Speaker:

is the quality of the Mexican tobacco.

Speaker:

- [Drew] Oh, and you have the, the seal,

Speaker:

the Boveda package with Boveda seal.

Speaker:

Thank you very much.

- [Manolo] Yes

Speaker:

- [Drew] For - open that up again.

Speaker:

So I can imagine a

beautiful setting would be,

Speaker:

we have fiesta, food,

Speaker:

plenty of aromas from the food,

Speaker:

experience, the tequila,

relax, enjoy the conversation,

Speaker:

enjoy the food, cap it

off with a beautiful cigar

Speaker:

and share the flavors of Mexico.

Speaker:

- [Manolo] Yes. Actually we

made a very special event

Speaker:

in Cinco de Mayo, of course.

Speaker:

And I, I'm going in

Cinco de Mayo this day,

Speaker:

this year to Miami actually, to Florida

Speaker:

to make a huge event with Cinco de Mayo,

Speaker:

with Reserva de la Familia,

it's our partnership tequila,

Speaker:

and all cigars and Mariachi.

Speaker:

So I made a special pairing

between, in the beginning

Speaker:

with the Reposado and the

last part with extra añejo

Speaker:

to make a proper transition

Speaker:

between the complexity of the cigar.

Speaker:

We change the, the

complexity in the tequilas

Speaker:

with the Mariachi music

and the, and the talk.

Speaker:

It's amazing stuff.

Speaker:

And another thing we do is

the Casa 1910 Experience.

Speaker:

Every year we share invitations

Speaker:

with the principal

customers in U.S. and Europe

Speaker:

to go to Mexico for

different series, cities.

Speaker:

For example, the first

Casa 1910 Experience,

Speaker:

it was in the Mexico City

in a beautiful hacienda.

Speaker:

Whole entire weekend with a

lot of different experience.

Speaker:

Friday, a beautiful

dinner, cocktail dinner.

Speaker:

Saturday, all the very special places,

Speaker:

we visit the very special

places in, in that town.

Speaker:

And we made a beautiful meal,

Speaker:

dinner with cocktails,

Mariachi, folklórico ballet,

Speaker:

and a lot of Mexican food and

a lot of Mexican cocktails

Speaker:

and different kind of spirits.

Speaker:

And we release the new, the new products.

Speaker:

And Sunday, it's more free

for, for the attendees so

Speaker:

they can go to check a lot of places.

Speaker:

And we take a very special brunch

Speaker:

with Mexican style

Speaker:

and it is an amazing,

an amazing experience.

Speaker:

And the 2023 we made in Tequila, Jalisco.

Speaker:

So we showed the agave fields,

Speaker:

the process of the tequila

from Reserva de la Familia.

Speaker:

We made a very special

pairings, Mariachi band.

Speaker:

A lot of, a lot of margaritas of course.

Speaker:

So it's an amazing

experience to share Mexico

Speaker:

with our customers.

Speaker:

- [Drew] Well, and it's beautiful.

Speaker:

You're giving a historical perspective.

Speaker:

You're giving people

a chance to understand

Speaker:

the history of Mexico.

Speaker:

You're dealing with the art of the food,

Speaker:

the art of the tequila,

the art of the tobacco.

Speaker:

It's really, it's hard to

have this conversation without

Speaker:

your mouth watering.

(Manolo laughs)

Speaker:

You know, it's, it, it's,

I think I'm gonna have to,

Speaker:

we're gonna have to go

to get tacos tonight.

Speaker:

It's gonna happen. I really

appreciate you letting us be

Speaker:

a part of your story.

Speaker:

- [Manolo] No, thank you

so much for your support,

Speaker:

definitely.

Speaker:

When we check the, the

pack and everything,

Speaker:

every time we say guys,

to my other co-founders,

Speaker:

Jamie and Serge, and he

say, guys, we need Bovedas.

Speaker:

We need Bovedas. Because it's

the best way to keep very in,

Speaker:

in the great point of consumption.

Speaker:

The cigars from the factory

to the final consumer.

Speaker:

In the beginning, we use Bovedas

Speaker:

and we keep to use Bovedas every time.

Speaker:

So

- [Drew] It's beautiful

Speaker:

- [Manolo] It's an amazing,

actually in my proper humidors

Speaker:

I use Bovedas so- (chuckles)

Speaker:

- [Drew] That's awesome.

Speaker:

We appreciate it. Thanks so much.

Speaker:

Congratulations on your awards.

Speaker:

Congratulations on the spirit

of hospitality that you bring

Speaker:

to presenting your, it was great fun

Speaker:

to get our group together

and have a salute.

Speaker:

- Yeah, amazing.

- Before we start,

Speaker:

and just really appreciate

your graciousness in,

Speaker:

in joining us and sitting with us.

Speaker:

- [Manolo] No, thank you

so much for having us.

Speaker:

- Thank you very much.

- Thank you.

Speaker:

(salsa music plays)

- [Drew] Casa 1910.

Speaker:

A cigar that's very worthy

Speaker:

of sharing the experience of Mexico.

Speaker:

(salsa outro plays)
