Mr. Funky Teacher (Nicholas Kleve)

This is Mr. Funky Teacher with BeAFunkyTeacher.com. I’m coming to you with another Be a Funky Teacher podcast. Welcome back, everyone. Today’s episode is One Caring Adult: The Power of Truly Seeing Every Child. Before we get into it, I want to share three things I’m thankful for. First, I’m thankful for colorful leaves and the beauty of changing seasons. Those bright colors remind me that change can be beautiful and that each season brings a new rhythm and perspective, much like the different stages of teaching and life. Second, I’m thankful for my children’s hard work and growth. Watching them learn, struggle, and grow reminds me how important encouragement and patience are when working with young people. Parenting gives me daily perspective that carries directly into my classroom. Third, I’m thankful for having things to look forward to. Family events, upcoming football games, and time with my wife bring hope and excitement, even on tough days. Those moments refill my tank and remind me what matters most. Today’s focus is One Caring Adult: The Power of Truly Seeing Every Child. Every child needs one adult who truly sees them. Kids do not need perfect adults. They need present ones. For some students, school may be the only safe space they have, and a teacher who consistently shows up, listens, and believes in them can rewrite a child’s story. Josh Shipp reminds us that every child is one caring adult away from a success story. That belief guides my work as an educator. Some students may have many caring adults in their lives, and that is a gift. But for others, a teacher may be the one consistent person who believes in them. Seeing students means looking beyond behavior. Kids often act out what they do not yet have words to express. When we respond with curiosity instead of judgment, we communicate safety. Accountability still matters, but how we speak and how we listen matters just as much. When students know they are seen, they show up differently. Confidence grows. Effort increases. They begin to believe in themselves. You may never know the full impact you have, but students will remember how you made them feel. You do not have to fix every problem. You simply need to show up and see the person in front of you. Presence changes lives. And today, you might be the one caring adult who makes all the difference. Remember to inspire greatness in young people. And don’t forget to be a funky teacher. Bye now.
