Today is Thursday, March 13, 2025.
Speaker AAnd this is worth the binge, the show where Aubrey and Jeff talk about the shows worth binging.
Speaker AWell, we did it again.
Speaker BOops.
Speaker BI did it again.
Speaker ASure.
Speaker AYeah, that.
Speaker AYeah, fell.
Speaker AFell a little behind, unfortunately, due to working a lot, which, you know, has some pluses, or at least one plus.
Speaker AGetting a pretty good check.
Speaker AAnd then I became the answer to life, the universe and everything.
Speaker BYeah.
Speaker BYou had a big old birthday.
Speaker AYeah.
Speaker AThe answer is 42.
Speaker AI don't feel it most days other than my joints, but my joints feel way older than 42, and they have for a long time.
Speaker ASorry, baby.
Speaker AYeah.
Speaker APeople are like, wait till you're my age.
Speaker AAnd I'm like, my knees have been your age since, you know, my early 20s.
Speaker ASo what's new with you?
Speaker BAbout to start spring break where you.
Speaker AGet paid for not working?
Speaker BYeah.
Speaker BYeah, that'd be awesome.
Speaker AThat sounds good.
Speaker AYeah, that's always.
Speaker AAlways a good time.
Speaker ASo I guess we're gonna go ahead and Talk about episode 7.
Speaker BSeason 2.
Speaker BEpisode 7 is titled Chicka Bardo, or.
Speaker AAt least something very similar to that.
Speaker BYeah.
Speaker BAn old romance intersects with a deadly present threat.
Speaker BDun, dun, dun.
Speaker AIt's pretty heavy description.
Speaker BSo this episode we're going to talk about a little different.
Speaker BNot really in chronological order, because there's a lot of back and forth present and.
Speaker BOr what might be present, and we don't know the order.
Speaker AYeah.
Speaker AI mean, almost the whole episode was a flashback.
Speaker BYeah.
Speaker AAlmost like a bottle episode, basically.
Speaker ABut not.
Speaker ANot quite.
Speaker ABut it kind of had that vibe, that feel.
Speaker BYeah.
Speaker BWe get to see Jim and Mark have their little Meet Cute, as they call it.
Speaker AAlthough the way he was kind of flirting with her, initially, I thought he was just playing, like, who are you?
Speaker AYou know, like, I thought he.
Speaker AI thought at first that he already knew her and he would just, you know.
Speaker ABut no, that was how they met.
Speaker AJust giving blood to Lumen.
Speaker AForeshadowing, I guess.
Speaker BYeah.
Speaker BGaines University was the campus they were on because I guess they both worked there.
Speaker AOr Gans maybe.
Speaker AI don't know.
Speaker AI don't know.
Speaker ARight.
Speaker AYou're probably saying it right and I'm probably wrong.
Speaker AThis whole episode was directed by someone else on the severance staff.
Speaker AIt was Jessica Gagne.
Speaker ARight.
Speaker BI don't remember her last name, but the first name sounds right.
Speaker AAnd.
Speaker AFirst time she'd ever directed anything.
Speaker BYeah.
Speaker BIsn't she like the.
Speaker BShe's like a visual person.
Speaker AYes.
Speaker AWhich, I mean, you can see how that bled into her directorial debut.
Speaker ADebut.
Speaker AI Don't know why I said it quite like that, but, you know, you could definitely see she.
Speaker AShe had an eye for really impactful visual shots.
Speaker AI mean, it's.
Speaker AI don't know that I could pick a definitive shot of the episode personally, but it was.
Speaker AI mean, it was enthralling.
Speaker AI mean, all the way through.
Speaker BYeah.
Speaker BI feel like there was one you liked the best because you.
Speaker BYou talked about it at the time.
Speaker AWe'll get to it.
Speaker BOkay, we'll get to it.
Speaker BSo then we see a bit of a montage of Jim and Mark, their time together.
Speaker BIt was really cool shot, kind of like a home movie that you're watching.
Speaker BSo I thought that was super cool.
Speaker AAnd it didn't feel like any other episode of the show.
Speaker AThe lighting was so different.
Speaker BYeah.
Speaker AYou know, and I kind of get the feeling.
Speaker AI don't know if this was the intent, but, you know, we're seeing most of the show through Mark's eyes, and it felt like, hey, this is an entirely different mindset and part of his life where he is seeing things differently.
Speaker BYeah.
Speaker AHe has that rosier tinted view on life right now.
Speaker BYeah.
Speaker BIt was really cool to see.
Speaker BAdam Scott played that so well.
Speaker AThe Internet went crazy about apparently how hot he was.
Speaker AHe's always had a good beard, but apparently the beard in this one, which did look great, was fake.
Speaker BYeah, I heard that.
Speaker BThat was insane.
Speaker BIt did look really real.
Speaker AYeah.
Speaker AHe said it was pretty uncomfortable, but, I mean, if I could have a sweet beard, I might go through with it, you know?
Speaker BYeah.
Speaker BDevin and Ricken come over to Jim and Mark's house, and we get to see this little interaction of them together, which was so cool, their little dynamic.
Speaker BAnd Mark seems a lot more happy to be around Rickon, which seemed a little weird.
Speaker AYeah.
Speaker BBecause normally he's like, this dude's crazy.
Speaker BI need to get out.
Speaker AYeah.
Speaker AHe had that buffer and he had that happiness already there that he could deal with Rick.
Speaker AAnd I don't think he ever, like, hated Rickon before, but definitely, yeah, it wasn't his biggest fan.
Speaker BYeah.
Speaker BAnd Gemma kind of lets Devin know that she's not drinking because she's pregnant, which Mark didn't really.
Speaker BMaybe it was just kind of sadness.
Speaker BBut he had mentioned before they tried to, but they.
Speaker AHe did.
Speaker BI don't think he ever said they were, actually.
Speaker BThen we have a really cool transition up close on Jim's face, and it transitioned to her in the bathroom where she is miscarriaging.
Speaker BSo that was a pretty tough scene to watch.
Speaker AYeah, really sad.
Speaker AThey.
Speaker AAnd that was the one, right, that they shot backwards.
Speaker BYeah.
Speaker BSo, yeah, she gets in the shower and Mark comes in, and then all of a sudden, you see the water droplets on her face going up instead of down.
Speaker AYeah.
Speaker AI had a.
Speaker ALike, rewind it a little bit to check that because I thought that was the case.
Speaker ABut, you know, we.
Speaker AThat was definitely how they shot it.
Speaker AAnd so it wasn't like some visual effect that they pulled that off with.
Speaker AWith that scene transition, just literally acted in reverse and then showed it the opposite way.
Speaker BBut then it transitions from the rain going up on Mark and.
Speaker BAnd he's an MDR talking to Ms.
Speaker BCasey from season one, which was crazy to see.
Speaker AAnd I kind of feel like Mark was making connections in his brain that was kind of him doing that, tying memories together.
Speaker AKind of like when Irving realized who Helena Heli was through the dream.
Speaker ATo me, that's what it felt like was happening.
Speaker BYeah.
Speaker BWe get to see Mark and Gemma go to a fertility clinic.
Speaker AYeah.
Speaker AWe see that dang doctor.
Speaker BWe see that dang doctor kind of pass them, and he looks at them weird.
Speaker BI don't know if it was meant to be like, I know who you two are, and you're here now, or.
Speaker BOr what, but.
Speaker AYeah, I mean.
Speaker BAnd we see the Lumen symbol on the paperwork.
Speaker AYeah.
Speaker AI mean, they are everywhere.
Speaker BBlood drives, fertility clinics everywhere.
Speaker AYeah.
Speaker BWe see Mark and Gemma taking a fertility shot or him helping her with it.
Speaker ATurn around and bend over.
Speaker BYeah.
Speaker BAnd then we see Gemma looking at some Shakai Bardo cards, which we saw in season one with Dylan.
Speaker BYou took those from.
Speaker AHe thieved it.
Speaker AYeah.
Speaker AHid it under a toilet.
Speaker BYeah.
Speaker BI don't.
Speaker BThat's so weird.
Speaker BLike, I don't understand the connection there or.
Speaker BOr why OND had those, but.
Speaker BAnd then we see Mark is working and Gemma is leaving, and she says, I love you.
Speaker BAnd she has to say it again because Mark's too into his work to.
Speaker BTo realize she said it and say it back.
Speaker AYeah.
Speaker AThis is just a Google search, but that Chakai Bardo says the.
Speaker AThis Bardo begins when the outer and inner signs of death appear and continues through the dissolution of or transmutation the elements until the external and internal breath ends, leading to the experience of the clear light of death.
Speaker ASo, like, kind of sounds like maybe a reintegration.
Speaker AThe outer and any dying.
Speaker AAlthough to me, that read like both dying, just dying, but maybe it's like they're dying and then becoming something.
Speaker ASomething else.
Speaker AYeah.
Speaker BBut then the police show up and we, you know, know what happens after that.
Speaker AYeah, and that probably is my shot.
Speaker AI mean, the.
Speaker AThe backup that he does is he sees the police.
Speaker ANo words were ever said.
Speaker AYeah, but the indication would have been clear even if we hadn't known from the first season that something tragic had happened, or at least they're indicating that it did.
Speaker AI mean, we still, at this point aren't that sure that it even happened at the.
Speaker AYou know.
Speaker AYeah, but that was the.
Speaker AIn the implication.
Speaker ABut when he backed away and the darkness fell over his face and it was almost like.
Speaker ALike him.
Speaker AHis life, his.
Speaker AHis brain, his mood, slipping into that because he just lost that part of himself.
Speaker AAnd, you know, that's where we see the more muted tone of the rest of the series where he is sad, you know, he's depressed with good reason.
Speaker AHis wife is gone.
Speaker BYeah, I loved how you explained that.
Speaker BIt was good.
Speaker BSo the second part of the episode that we wanted to talk about was we get to see Gemma on the testing floor.
Speaker BIt is not Ms.
Speaker BCasey.
Speaker BWe see Gemma.
Speaker BExciting.
Speaker AAsking about Mark a couple of times.
Speaker AYeah.
Speaker BAsking about Mark.
Speaker BShe's getting vitals from a nurse who.
Speaker BDoing all these random tests.
Speaker BWe don't know what they're testing for.
Speaker ABut we just know it's testing for.
Speaker BAnd she tells Jim and she's going to be visiting six rooms that day, whatever that means.
Speaker AProbably not.
Speaker ANot good things.
Speaker AI mean, that's.
Speaker AThat we can feel pretty confident in.
Speaker BBut, like, the way Gemma asks, it's like, this is what she does every day.
Speaker AAnd I'm sure it's a terrible existence.
Speaker BTerrible.
Speaker BWe see Gemma put on a red dress and a wig and she's escorted to the first room of the day.
Speaker BWhen she walks in, we hear the ding of the severance chip activating.
Speaker BAnd I thought it was Ms.
Speaker BCasey at first, but then I was like, I don't think that's Ms.
Speaker BCasey.
Speaker BBut she's like, asking for a break from this doctor that we've seen from episode five, I think, who went and got the tools from O and D and he's like, it's been six weeks.
Speaker BYou had a break.
Speaker AYeah.
Speaker BLike, what the heck is happening?
Speaker AYeah, I mean.
Speaker AAnd I think he was probably telling the truth there.
Speaker ALike, that version of her had not been there for six actual weeks.
Speaker AOr.
Speaker AI mean, I don't know, because Milkshake talks about how long it been since Mark and, you know, so who knows?
Speaker ABut I don't think it was immediate.
Speaker AAnd she has no way to tell, you know, because that's an innie.
Speaker AAnd as we find out as she goes in these different rooms that she has multiple innies.
Speaker BYeah.
Speaker BI didn't even realize you could do that until now.
Speaker AI mean, it's.
Speaker AI mean, it's reasonable to.
Speaker ATo think that that's possible, but it is.
Speaker AYou know, it opens up a lot more possibilities, you know, with someone like Bert or Irving may have had other versions of their innies.
Speaker BWow.
Speaker BYeah.
Speaker ASo.
Speaker BAnd then she comes out with a toothache, but she didn't know what.
Speaker BShe doesn't know what happened in that room.
Speaker AYeah.
Speaker BShe's crazy.
Speaker AI bet I know what time it is.
Speaker AI bet it's 2:30.
Speaker BSo as she's walking by all these rooms, we see all the names on the doors and they happen to be files that the team has refined.
Speaker BSo I wonder what about these rooms that they're refining?
Speaker BWhat do you think?
Speaker AI don't know that I have a good, like, idea for that.
Speaker ABut I know each one I saw just made me feel more sad.
Speaker ALike the people in MDR are going through it.
Speaker ABut Gemma is, I mean, the lab rat of the worst kind.
Speaker BAnd I almost feel like she's the only one down there that.
Speaker AI feel like that might be true.
Speaker ABut I don't think she's been the only one ever down there.
Speaker BYeah.
Speaker BAs Gemma's walking back from her room, we notice these rooms.
Speaker BBut she also looks oddly at one, and it is titled Cold Harbor.
Speaker BAnd she later talks to the Dr.
Speaker BMaurer and says, I noticed a new room I've never been in before.
Speaker BAnd he talks about when she goes in there, the world you will see the world and the world will see you.
Speaker AYeah.
Speaker AA very interesting quote.
Speaker BYeah.
Speaker AThat we don't have a lot of knowledge as to what that means, but it definitely sounds big.
Speaker AI mean, we've already heard, you know, the Lumen guys talk about it's going to be change.
Speaker AWorld changing once Mark gets done with that file.
Speaker BYeah.
Speaker ASo they're planning on something large.
Speaker BYeah.
Speaker BThat's crazy.
Speaker BWe get to see Gemma in another room.
Speaker BShe's writing Christmas cards.
Speaker AYeah.
Speaker AThank you notes.
Speaker BThank you notes.
Speaker AChristmas gifts.
Speaker AYeah.
Speaker BAnd Dr.
Speaker BMauer sitting on the couch with a Christmas sweater on.
Speaker AYeah.
Speaker ALike he's supposed to be playing her husband or something.
Speaker BYeah.
Speaker AAnd that dude, I mean, I.
Speaker AI don't even want to speculate as to what he's been up to.
Speaker BYeah.
Speaker BDid you notice that she was.
Speaker BHer writing was very like, scribbly.
Speaker BIt was not good.
Speaker BShe was definitely riding with her non dominant hand.
Speaker AYeah.
Speaker AThat could be true.
Speaker AThat could be a reason.
Speaker AIt could be that.
Speaker AThat any is newer.
Speaker ASo maybe it doesn't have that skill.
Speaker AAlthough it seems like a lot of motor skills do transfer over.
Speaker AOr another thing is she was writing a bunch of those and her.
Speaker AHer hand was just tired.
Speaker BYeah.
Speaker BBut I think at the doctor's office, I remember her writing with her other hand, so.
Speaker AWell, I don't remember that.
Speaker ASo I will have to take your word for it.
Speaker AAnd you can call into the voice, you know, the voicemail and tell us we were wrong.
Speaker AIf we were.
Speaker BLater on, Dr.
Speaker BMaurer visits Jim and Gemma's room.
Speaker BAnd Gemma says she wants to go home and see Mark, but he tells her that Mark is remarried and has a daughter now.
Speaker ASo he does lie.
Speaker AJust like Milchick.
Speaker AI mean, so it probably wasn't six weeks.
Speaker AI mean, he was probably just lying to you.
Speaker BYeah, it's.
Speaker AAlthough this lie honestly felt like it had reason behind it because he clearly has a thing for her.
Speaker BYeah.
Speaker AAnd like he was trying to dissuade her from waiting on Mark.
Speaker AI guess.
Speaker BLike Mark's moved on.
Speaker BYou can too.
Speaker AI mean, so yeah, I don't know.
Speaker AThis lie at least felt like he had a reason to do it, even though it was a slimy, creepy reason.
Speaker BBut after that statement, Gemma has had enough.
Speaker BShe's.
Speaker BShe's done with this.
Speaker BShe hits Dr.
Speaker BMaurer with a chair.
Speaker AYeah.
Speaker AAnd take WWE style.
Speaker BAnd grabs his key card that is also black.
Speaker BAnd takes off.
Speaker AYep.
Speaker AAnd then has a video game level.
Speaker ATrying to escape, like go through these.
Speaker AThese little passageways and lighting up as she walks past them.
Speaker AIt really felt like she was sneaking in a video game.
Speaker BYeah.
Speaker BThe lights were now on the floor instead of on the ceiling.
Speaker BLike they were for Mark and Helly, which was interesting.
Speaker BAnd she gets to the elevator, goes up and she switches into Ms.
Speaker BCasey.
Speaker AYes.
Speaker ATerrible, terrible, terrible.
Speaker AAnd she goes through that hallway.
Speaker ANot honestly sure while she's there, why she's there.
Speaker AAnd runs into Melchick, who's a little out of breath.
Speaker BYeah.
Speaker ABecause somehow he got warned.
Speaker AMaybe it's just because that elevator.
Speaker AI don't know.
Speaker ABut one way or another, he.
Speaker AHe knew he had to stop her.
Speaker BYeah.
Speaker AAnd when he did, it was disappointing because, dude, we were starting to feel a little bit bad for you.
Speaker AA little bit.
Speaker ALike maybe you're not a straight up bad dude.
Speaker AYou know, you're dealing with this trauma yourself.
Speaker AAnd then you just push her back.
Speaker AAlthough we don't know what time that is.
Speaker AIt could have Been before his review and before they gave him the black caricature pictures of.
Speaker AOf the Cure family member or the, you know, the Lumen people.
Speaker BYou think that.
Speaker BBut I.
Speaker BI think it was after.
Speaker BJust because Ms.
Speaker BDr.
Speaker BMauer had that Christmas sweater on in the.
Speaker BThe Twin Room.
Speaker BCalled the Twin Room.
Speaker AYeah, that's true.
Speaker AThat's true.
Speaker BAnd they were talking about how Cold harbor was at 96 or something.
Speaker AYeah.
Speaker AThe people who are watching MDR, who look like mdr, who may or may not have been the shadow people.
Speaker BYeah.
Speaker AOut in the real world where they didn't, you know, they nail almost every single aspect of that show, but the one they didn't like.
Speaker AThey didn't ask about the shadow versions of themselves or try to speak to them at all.
Speaker AI know I said it before, but, like, you know, if I see a dude who looks just like me, dress like me, and just might be, but not really the real thing walks like me.
Speaker AOh, I was going for Slim Shady.
Speaker BOh.
Speaker AAnyway, you know, I'm at least going to ask.
Speaker AHey, you know, like, what are you.
Speaker AWhat are you doing here?
Speaker AHow much you know something about that other person?
Speaker AAnd they said nothing, but, like, they're refining the data that MDR is refining.
Speaker AOr they're just watching them.
Speaker AWhy couldn't they just use cameras they need.
Speaker AI mean, they have to be there for some reason.
Speaker BYeah, I don't.
Speaker BI have no idea.
Speaker ABut they haven't spoke at all.
Speaker AYou know, like those refiners.
Speaker AAnd in this episode, when we look back at them a little bit later, you're right, because of the timing, because Irving is gone.
Speaker AAnd then the shadow Irving is also gone after that.
Speaker ASo it's clearly related directly to the refiner.
Speaker AI don't know.
Speaker AYou know, they don't speak.
Speaker AThey're just.
Speaker AI mean, they're just odd.
Speaker BLike, what is their point?
Speaker AI mean, I know just what you're.
Speaker BSaying, but Milchick ends up telling Ms.
Speaker BCasey that her.
Speaker BHer Audi came for some reason, but she took the wrong elevator and she did.
Speaker ABut it wasn't a rowdy.
Speaker AI mean, I guess it was.
Speaker AYeah, it's weird.
Speaker BAnd sends her back down.
Speaker AAnd she's like, but what?
Speaker AAnd he's like, off you go.
Speaker BOff you go.
Speaker ABye.
Speaker BBye.
Speaker AMilkshake, Milkshake.
Speaker BCome on now, dude.
Speaker BBut he's already had so many strikes against him.
Speaker BI think he's just like, I need to play it by the book.
Speaker BYou know, he's already been super creepy in the mirror and.
Speaker AYeah.
Speaker BSo grow, grow, grow.
Speaker BHe's Trying to grow himself, I guess.
Speaker BAnd poor Gemma, just, when she wakes up, is just defeated, Crying all on the ground.
Speaker BShe just.
Speaker AYeah.
Speaker AAnd the nurse takes her back and seems like she at least cares for her to some degree, but.
Speaker AAnd obviously not fully, because she's letting her deal with all of this.
Speaker BYeah.
Speaker BOkay, so while this episode is happening, we see Mark on the couch.
Speaker BHe's still out of it from when he fainted last episode.
Speaker BLooked like he had a seizure, whatever.
Speaker BBut he's on the couch.
Speaker BAnd Devon and Rappi are arguing over what to do with Mark.
Speaker BDevin wants to call Kovalvig.
Speaker BAnd Ragabi is like, if you're going to do that, I'm out of here.
Speaker BLike, I'm not.
Speaker BI'm not dealing with her.
Speaker AYeah.
Speaker AAnd she kind of argued with Devin, but, like, didn't really put up much of a fight.
Speaker AJust, like, later, like, I'm real invested in this, but now I'm not.
Speaker AOkay, bye.
Speaker AYou called her.
Speaker BOkay, bye.
Speaker AOkay.
Speaker ALike, you couldn't put a little more behind why you didn't want to stay to give Devin the reason not to call her.
Speaker ABut Rigabe is like a walking plot device, so she's not really needed for other exposition.
Speaker AThat's what, you know, Cobell's probably going to provide once they.
Speaker ASeems like they'd contact her.
Speaker BAnd then, you know, Mark wakes up and Devin asked him, where you been?
Speaker BWhere you been?
Speaker AAnd the face acting on that dude right there, like.
Speaker AAnd you can see, like, realizations happening.
Speaker BYeah.
Speaker AAnd it felt like that was his Dagobah moment.
Speaker ALike, dude, Dagobah.
Speaker AHe went off into the woods to train with Yoda, you know, and now he can use the Force.
Speaker ALike, you know, he's integrated.
Speaker AThis is a man who has some power now.
Speaker AHe didn't have all the power, but he's got some power.
Speaker BIf you don't watch Star Wars.
Speaker BThat was a Star wars reference.
Speaker AI think the Yoda part gave that away to anyone who would be listening.
Speaker ABut sure, yeah.
Speaker BI had some observations this episode.
Speaker BAnd if you turn on the subtitles when Rickon and Devin and Mark and Jim are having dinner or lunch or whatever, says, did you know you can purify urine into drinkable water?
Speaker AYeah, yeah, yeah.
Speaker BHe's.
Speaker BHe's still a little nuts, but not as nuts as we've seen him, you know, thus far.
Speaker BGemma is listening to.
Speaker BBefore she hits Dr.
Speaker BMaurer over the head, she's listening to I'll be seeing you.
Speaker BJust like when Mark was taping up her photo in season one.
Speaker BWhich I thought was cool.
Speaker BMaybe a little song that they both enjoyed.
Speaker BBut this time, I think it has to do with Dr.
Speaker BMaurer.
Speaker BLike, she's gonna be seeing him again, which is kind of sad.
Speaker AIt is, yeah.
Speaker AIt's.
Speaker AIt's real sad.
Speaker BAnd then Mr.
Speaker BDrummond, when he was talking to Dr.
Speaker BMaurer in the twin room, as I guess it's.
Speaker BWe're going to call it now.
Speaker ASure.
Speaker BHe says he's stuck at 96%.
Speaker BThis nosebleed set us back.
Speaker BAnd so that kind of gave me a hint into, like, the timeline there.
Speaker BBecause he talks about the nosebleed he had.
Speaker AYeah, yeah, you're right.
Speaker AYou're right.
Speaker ANow, Dylan was not in this episode.
Speaker BHe was not and so said.
Speaker ABut so I think for your first observation there, that probably should be the.
Speaker AThe quote of the episode.
Speaker AUnless you have another option.
Speaker BWait for which one?
Speaker AAbout.
Speaker AAbout purifying.
Speaker BOh, yeah.
Speaker BThat should probably definitely be it.
Speaker BRickon wins the cake this time.
Speaker AHe does.
Speaker BSo that has been worth the binge.
Speaker BOur severance series for episode seven.
Speaker BIf you'd like to call in and give us your thoughts or questions, you can call 417.
Speaker BNo, you can.
Speaker A415.
Speaker APodline.
Speaker B4150 podline.
Speaker BI would.
Speaker BAlmost there.
Speaker AYou were almost there.
Speaker BAnd we.
Speaker BWe'd love to hear from you.
Speaker ATell us your theories, tell us if we were.
Speaker AIf we were wrong on any of that.
Speaker AI probably was.
Speaker ASo, yeah, let me know, because otherwise I'm just going to keep being wrong, and then that's not good.
Speaker ASo.
Speaker BAll right, we'll see you later.
Speaker ABye.
