Melissa Deally:

Welcome back to another episode of health hack. And for the next few weeks, I'm going to be focusing on the topic of energy because I know a lot of people are struggling with their energy levels, waking up feeling exhausted, having energy slumps in the middle of the afternoon, just generally feeling like they're dragging their ass as they go through their day. And so I wanted to provide a lot of short, simple tips that you can factor into making some small changes in your life that can easily boost your energy. So today, I want to share one with you that you may not ever have thought about. And that is the fact that digestion actually uses energy. And therefore, every time you put food in your mouth, I want you to think about what are you putting in your mouth? And is it worth it for the energy that is being used to break it down? So roughly 30% of your energy goes towards breaking down your food. If you're eating nutrient dense meals that are satiating, and that will have you last from one mealtime to the next mealtime, that's great. But if you're eating foods that are giving you quick energy kicks, however, don't last so that you have to then have something else that gives you another quick energy kick. Are you really gaining more energy for each of those quick kicks that you get? And in the long run, you're probably not because your body's actually using so much energy to break down that food, and then you need something else. So just think about that. Every time you put food in your mouth. Your body is using energy. So make good choices in terms of what you're putting in your mouth to ensure that you're satiated at the end of that meal with enough energy to last until your next meal slot
