Speaker B

Okay, I am going to be super honest with you.

Speaker B

The book that I am talking about today is not a sexy book.

Speaker B

It is not groundbreaking.

Speaker B

It wasn't even necessarily entertaining.

Speaker B

But it might just be the most important book that you read this year, and here is why.

Speaker B

So, I feel like I have a pretty good intuition when it comes to picking books that are perfect for the season that I'm in.

Speaker B

I feel like so many times I will read a book and I'm like, man, this is exactly what I needed.

Speaker B

I just have a good picker when.

Speaker A

It comes to a really good book.

Speaker B

Specifically a good personal development book.

Speaker B

But I heard about the Slight Edge probably a year ago from a good friend, and she knows my reading style.

Speaker B

And she said, blakely, I think that you really need to read this book.

Speaker B

You would really enjoy it.

Speaker B

And I was like, you know, tell me what it's about.

Speaker B

She's like, it's about everyday habits and, you know, your tiny actions compound.

Speaker B

And in my mind, I was like, okay, like, I think I got that part down.

Speaker B

And so I didn't read it at the time.

Speaker B

And then back in January, I was listening to a speaker, and she was talking about how the book the Slight Edge changed her life.

Speaker B

And once again, for some reason, I was just like, y'all, I'm pretty sure I've got that under control.

Speaker B

Like, I don't think I need to read another book about habits.

Speaker B

And last week, I was talking to a friend and I was, you know, we were talking about, you know, just the season that we're in and kind of different struggles that we're going through.

Speaker B

And I was telling her, I said, you know, I am really trying to not self sabotage in this season because I am doing the same thing every single day, and it's so boring and it's so repetitive, and I am not necessarily seeing results yet.

Speaker B

Like, I'm kind of, like, suspended in midair in between where I was and where I'm going.

Speaker B

And, like, I know that these habits are going to get me where I need to go, but it's just the mindset of, like, basically being okay with being bored and she was like, blakely, you need to read the Slight Edge.

Speaker B

I'm like, that is like the third time this book has come up.

Speaker B

So I downloaded it and I finished it in three days.

Speaker B

It was so good.

Speaker B

And so that's what we're going to talk about today is the Slight Edge and some of the principles from the book.

Speaker B

Because, like I said, it was boring and it was repetitive, but for me, it was exactly what I needed to hear in the season.

Speaker B

And it might be exactly what you need to hear.

Speaker B

And I feel like this book was great because it could land in multiple different seasons of your life.

Speaker B

So if you were just starting something big and you need a mindset that's going to carry you through, this book is perfect for that.

Speaker B

Or if you are someone who has already seen success, but you are hitting a new edge, like there is a new mountain to climb in front of you, this book is going to be perfect for that as well.

Speaker B

When I was reading this book, I was thinking about, you know, if you study Kobe Bryant, they talked about how he used to show up for practice an hour before everyone else, and he would work on the fundamentals, so he would work on dribbling and free throws and other things that they do in basketball.

Speaker B

I did play basketball for three years, but I kept that bench nice and warm.

Speaker B

So outside of free throws and dribbling, I'm not even really 100% sure what all else goes in basketball.

Speaker B

But I bet Cody Bryant knew, and that is what he did when he showed up an hour early for practice.

Speaker B

And that was just such a good reminder that, like, one of the best basketball players in the world, he focused on the basics more so than anyone else.

Speaker B

And, like, him focusing on the basics made him the best.

Speaker B

And I think sometimes we get caught up in this.

Speaker B

Wow, I need to do the big thing.

Speaker B

I need to do the exciting thing.

Speaker B

I need to do, like, the thing that is a headline.

Speaker B

But really true success comes from little, tiny, consistent habits every single day.

Speaker B

And so as I was reading this book, I was like, man, this book is so, so good.

Speaker B

Because it's not a tactic.

Speaker B

It is a mindset shift and a way of living, a way of showing up daily that is not necessarily exciting, but it does produce results.

Speaker B

And I.

Speaker B

I loved this book because a lot of my reading right now and, you know, the podcasts I listen to and just the conversations that I have in general are about quantum leaps.

Speaker B

Like, quantum leaps are the big thing right now.

Speaker B

And, you know, 10x is.

Speaker B

Is a big deal.

Speaker B

And I talk about it a lot because I do think that you can quantum leap, and I do think that 10x literally is easier than 2x.

Speaker B

But I also think those books and those concepts in that mindset can be very debilitating for people who don't understand the slight edge.

Speaker B

Like, I feel like, fundamentally, just based on how I was raised and, you know, growing up in the restaurant industry and, you know, having to work since I was 12, like, I've just always kind of had the slight edge.

Speaker B

But I don't know if this is natural for everyone.

Speaker B

And so I feel like this book is a great thing.

Speaker B

If you were like, okay, but how do you actually make him quantum leave?

Speaker B

Like, how do you actually 10x the slight edge is how you do it.

Speaker B

Like, it's those little tiny things consistently done every single day that lead to the massive results.

Speaker B

So as I was listening to this book, I was like, oh, my gosh, I've got to do a podcast episode on this.

Speaker B

And there was a million ways that I could have taken this because this book was so good, even though it was so simple, it was so impactful.

Speaker B

But I pulled three principles that you can apply right now.

Speaker B

So we'll go through these.

Speaker B

Principle number one, small things matter more than big moments.

Speaker B

I needed to hear that.

Speaker B

And the funny thing is, he says it so many times in the book, but that was something that I needed to hear so much right now.

Speaker B

And you might be experiencing the same thing where you're doing small things and you're like, man, is this working?

Speaker B

Like, am I doing the right thing?

Speaker B

Because you might see someone on social media and they are doing what looks like the same thing that you're doing, but they're seeing this massive result.

Speaker B

And, you know, maybe they're doing this big launch, or they're launching a massive product, or they lost a ton of weight, or they moved to a fun new town or they started a new job, or like, whatever it is.

Speaker B

Like, we see these people do these big, big things.

Speaker B

And if you're anything like me, that will trigger a little panic for me because I'm like, man, I'm not doing enough.

Speaker B

Like, maybe I need to do more.

Speaker B

Maybe I need to, to do that and move on to the next thing.

Speaker B

But the true success comes from doing the small things every single day.

Speaker B

And when you do see people on social media that do have those big moments, their big moments were built by those teeny, tiny, consistent, everyday, every single day actions.

Speaker B

And a lot of times on social media.

Speaker B

And I do this too.

Speaker B

I don't always show the messy side.

Speaker B

And I certainly wish I was better at doing that.

Speaker B

But I don't think to pull out my phone unless, you know, everything's sunshine and rainbows.

Speaker B

I'm certainly not pulling out my phone when I'm crying on the floor in my office because I can't figure out how to edit the freaking footer on my website.

Speaker B

You know, you're not saying that.

Speaker B

You're just saying, like, oh, I'm so happy.

Speaker B

I'm so great.

Speaker B

Everything's wonderful.

Speaker B

And so I think, especially in this digital age, it is so important to remember that the small things matter more than the big moments.

Speaker B

So if you're only comparing yourself or your journey or your business or whatever it is to someone else's, you know, three Instagram stories a day, those Instagram stories probably took them all of, what, like, two or three minutes to post.

Speaker B

And so you're not seeing the other essentially 24 hours of their day.

Speaker B

And, you know, the work they're putting in and the connections that they're making and the coaching they're getting done and just all the little tiny things that really do add up.

Speaker B

And I think, especially in this, like, microwave world, where we want everything so instantly, it is so hard to sit in those small things and be patient.

Speaker B

That is something I definitely struggle with.

Speaker B

So if you struggle with that, we're on the same page where I am just like, okay, I did the thing, now I want the result.

Speaker B

And that's why I loved this book, because it was just such a good reminder that the small things really do add up.

Speaker B

If you want the big success, you likely have to be more patient than you think you're going to be.

Speaker B

And so, like I said, I just.

Speaker B

I loved that principle from the book.

Speaker B

Okay, principle number two.

Speaker B

Everything compounds good and bad, and we all know this.

Speaker B

But just having that reminder is like, whoa, okay, you're right.

Speaker B

And he talks about how, you know, you're not going to gain weight if you eat, you know, one donut, like, nothing's going to happen.

Speaker B

Likely nothing's going to happen if you eat a donut every day for a week, but if you eat a donut every single day for a year, like, you're probably going to gain weight.

Speaker B

And maybe a donut wasn't a good example because I feel like I eat the equivalent of a donut of some sort of sweet every single day.

Speaker B

But he said, you know, if, like, your negative habits aren't going to negatively impact you right away.

Speaker B

And same with your positive habits.

Speaker B

They're not going to positively impact you right away, but a year later, three years later, 10 years later, you're going to see those results.

Speaker B

And so your habits can either compound in your favor or they can compound against you.

Speaker B

And like I said, this is something we all inherently know.

Speaker B

But just having that reminder, at least for me, was like, okay, good habits compound.

Speaker B

Time is going to pass anyway.

Speaker B

I want it to pass in my favor.

Speaker B

And like, oh, it's just such a good reminder.

Speaker B

And then principle number three is success is built on invisible discipline.

Speaker B

The slight edge is about doing the easy to do and the easy not to do.

Speaker B

And he talks about that in the book over and over and over again, is how a lot of the habits that will compound in our favor, they're extremely easy to do, but they're also extremely easy not to do.

Speaker B

He said, you know, it's extremely easy to work out for 30 minutes a day, but it's also extremely easy to not work out 30 minutes a day.

Speaker B

Or it's easy to read 10 pages of a book, but it's also easy not to read 10 pages of a book.

Speaker B

And man, that is so true.

Speaker B

Like, there will be days where and I feel like this is happening less and less for me simply because I'm rewiring my brain to, like, no, this is how I show up.

Speaker B

But there are days where I'm like, you know what?

Speaker B

I don't feel like reading today.

Speaker B

Like, what does it even matter?

Speaker B

I like, I have like 300 pages left in this book, so what does it matter If I read 10 pages today, but if I continuously have that mindset, then the book's never going to get read.

Speaker B

Versus if I'm like, you know what, I'm someone who reads 10 pages of a book every single day, and I just do it whether I feel like it or not.

Speaker B

You know, the book is read pretty quickly.

Speaker B

And so I just love that reminder that success is built on invisible discipline.

Speaker B

Because once again, back to, you know, social media.

Speaker B

And we are now inside our friends lives and inside of the lives of the people that we look up to.

Speaker B

Like, we are seeing what we think is the big picture, but often it is not.

Speaker B

I know, at least for me, I don't show my work on social media the way that I should.

Speaker B

Like, yeah, you might get a glimpse here and there, but you don't see the hours.

Speaker B

And so I try to remind myself of that when I'm looking at other people that are, like, so massively successful.

Speaker B

I'm like, blakely, you haven't Seen the hours.

Speaker B

Because it takes so much work in the background to.

Speaker B

To be successful.

Speaker B

And especially if you are starting from scratch or you have, like, a really big dream that maybe doesn't match your.

Speaker B

The area that you live in, the friend group that you've been in, or the age group that you are.

Speaker B

Like, if you've got a dream that's kind of like, outside of the regular box, you really do have to do so much invisible work.

Speaker B

And, like, you have to be so disciplined when nobody is watching you.

Speaker B

And that's what he was saying.

Speaker B

You know, a lot of the things that make us successful are done behind closed doors, and nobody is going to know if we don't do them.

Speaker B

But we are.

Speaker B

And once again, it's something that I knew, and I get it, but it's just such a good reminder because there will be times where I'm like, nobody knows.

Speaker B

I'm reading and learning how to code, and, you know, I'm reading all these books about all this different stuff, and I'm getting coached and I'm, you know, journaling, and I'm all doing all the things, all the things.

Speaker B

And it starts to feel really like I'm wasting my time.

Speaker B

Like, why am I not doing something that is more productive?

Speaker B

But that is that invisible discipline that really does add up.

Speaker B

And I'm not gonna lie and say that it's easy because it is a struggle show up and be disciplined every single day.

Speaker B

But it's just.

Speaker B

It's a promise I've made to myself at this point.

Speaker B

And that's what he talks about on the slight edge is like, that is just the mindset that you have to adopt is you have to be able to see into the future enough.

Speaker B

I feel like that's so raven right now, but you have to be able to see into the future enough to, you know, really visualize.

Speaker B

Like, okay, what is this going to look like if I keep showing up every single day?

Speaker B

Even when it gets boring, even when it's redundant, even when I think nothing is happening, like, even when I think nothing is happening.

Speaker B

And he talks about so many different examples of, you know, different times where people were just kept trying and trying and trying and it felt like nothing was happening and they wanted to give up.

Speaker B

And then, like, right when they wanted to give up was when they had the big breakthrough.

Speaker B

And so, gosh, it was just such a good book.

Speaker B

It really, like I said, it was not anything that was new information.

Speaker B

It was not anything that necessarily blew my mind.

Speaker B

Like, it wasn't one of Those books where I just felt like my brain was rearranged, but it was such a good reminder that those tiny little consistent actions every single day or what add up to real success.

Speaker B

So he, at the end of the book, he gave a ton of good homework examples.

Speaker B

I'm going to give you one and one that I thought was really pivotal.

Speaker B

But choose one area of your life where you feel stuck.

Speaker B

So that can be in your, you know, personal life, in your business, whatever it is, and you can get really micro with it.

Speaker B

You, if you want, you can say, you know, my relationship with one of my specific children or, you know, my branding and content or whatever it is.

Speaker B

Like, maybe you want to, you know, get better at funnels or SEO or whatever it is, and then ask yourself, what's the one degree habit I can do daily that would change this over time?

Speaker B

And then commit to doing it for 30 days even if it feels pointless at first.

Speaker B

And this, like I said, this homework sounds so easy.

Speaker B

Like, okay, choose one area of your life where you feel stuck.

Speaker B

Ask what's the 1 degree habit I can do daily?

Speaker B

And then commit to doing it for 30 days.

Speaker B

It's like, okay, really, like, that's so simple.

Speaker B

But that goes back to what he said.

Speaker B

The things that are so easy to do, the things that are so simple to do are just as easy not to do.

Speaker B

And man, that just, I needed that reminder.

Speaker B

I needed that to just play over and over and over again in my head to where when I get to a point where I need to, you know, act on something or make a decision or whatever it is, and I go, man, you know, I just don't feel like doing this.

Speaker B

And it's not even going to be a big deal if I don't do it.

Speaker B

I need to remember that, that like, the things that are easy to do are also easy not to do and just keep trucking.

Speaker B

And I want, for this whole episode, I did not want for this to be like this motivational high.

Speaker B

You can do anything.

Speaker B

All you have to do is, you know, show up and, and things are going to happen for you.

Speaker B

Like this episode.

Speaker B

I hope to convey the mindset that I left the book with is that this is your call to go low and go slow and to get obsessed with what no one else sees and trust that it's working.

Speaker B

And trust me, I know that that is so difficult.

Speaker B

I am in this season right here with you.

Speaker B

But going low and going slow will lead to those big quantum leaps, will lead to that big 10x.

Speaker B

I do still think that you need to have a 10x vision and you need to have that, like, quantum goal that you are going towards.

Speaker B

But it's also such a good reminder that, okay, in order to get to the 10x, I have to do the tiny, consistent things daily.

Speaker B

There's not going to be this one big thing that I do and it's going to change my life.

Speaker B

It's going to be those tiny, consistent, every single day boring habits.

Speaker B

And we're just going to set in our boredom.

Speaker B

And trust me, I'm over here, like, fidgeting, especially with some of the things that I'm working on because they are very like, sit down in front of a computer, get in your deep work mode, turn your phone off, no music.

Speaker B

Like, it is, like, very intense and it's very boring.

Speaker B

But I just keep telling myself, like, I do have a 10x vision and I do want to get to that.

Speaker B

And it's going to be those little tiny things showing up daily.

Speaker B

Discipline that are going to get me there.

Speaker B

So you don't need more strategy.

Speaker B

You just need to stop abandoning the strategy that already worked for you.

Speaker B

So I hope that this episode was super valuable to you.

Speaker B

I didn't mean to just give you basically a book report, but y'all know I get really excited about good books and I want to share it with my girl.

Speaker B

So I wanted to make sure that you, you heard this message.

Speaker B

Because if you are anything like me or if you are in a season that I am in, maybe you needed to hear that reminder that those little daily habits that you're doing every single day, they're going to pay off.

Speaker B

We are going to, you know, come up to the mountain and we're going to climb it and we are going to, you know, be in a whole new realm of our life because we kept showing up consistently daily for ourselves.

Speaker B

Okay.

Speaker B

If you have some kind of breakthrough with your daily habits in the next 30 days, the next 60 days, and the next 90 days, I would love it if you would message me on Instagram and tell me all about it at the Blakely Ramsey.

Speaker B

And with that, I hope you have a wonderful rest of your day and I will see you in the next episode.
