Ransomware payments fell 35 percent in 2024. I was a little surprised by the stat published in Cybersecurity Dive this week. The decline was attributed to several factors, including international law enforcement actions, which disrupted operations for several ransomware gangs, government sanctions against cryptocurrency laundering services, and, and this is the one I'm most hopeful about, The article calls out improved cyber resilience for victims.

I hope that's you. I'm definitely hearing more of those resilience stories from CXOs as I crisscross the country. For those of you putting your shoulder against that business continuity and disaster recovery effort. Keep pushing. Sophos has completed an 859 million acquisition of SecureWorks. The company plans to continue operating both brands in the near term.

The acquisition is just one deal in a flurry of M& A cybersecurity deals I expect to see in 2025. And finally, today, I feel like I can't let a day go by without being asked about DeepSeek. Several vendor partners are reporting seeing a surge in employees attempting to use the DeepSeek AI tool, not just in their companies, but in healthcare organizations.

I did a two minute drill on some of my concerns about the tool last week. Not the least of which is DeepSeek's Terms of Service, which clearly state that all the queries and all the data submitted to the service is stored on servers in China. All that to say, if you've not yet had a conversation with your leadership team and staff about DeepSeek, it's time.
